Over the last century, engineers all over the world have spared no effort to achieve the unachievable in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The 164.8-kilometre-long bridge built in 2011 in China operates as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxing that previously took 4.5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box-girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles per day.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world’s longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-long bridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”.

I will never forget the day when I won the bicycle race for the third time. It was special for me because I set a new record. But what made it more special was that I had to go through a tough time getting ready for the day.
About three months before the final race something unfortunate happened when I fell off during practice and broke my left leg. All I could do was to wait for the injuries to heal (治愈). The worry was that the doctors suggested bed rest for at least two months. A close friend of mine who had just recovered from his leg injury warned me that even if I were able to stand on my feet, I wouldn’t be able to ride a bicycle for a few more weeks. It was safe for me to give up because my leg was likely to be injured again during practice or the race.
It was very difficult for me to just stop like this. My father felt bad too. He tried to keep my spirits up during my bed rest. My parents gave me nutritious (有营养的) food to keep me strong. They showed me lots of videos of cycling events to improve (提升) my riding skills. Thus, they were preparing me for the day when I returned to the track. The most important thing they taught me was that while there could be a chance of missing the race, never giving up in such a situation was an example of good sportsmanship.
Two months passed quickly. The doctors were amazed at my complete recovery and supported my participation (参赛). Gradually, I was walking comfortably and exercising too. I practised as much as I could.
Finally, the big day came. I was a little bit nervous but once I was on the race track, the fear had gone. The race began. I tried my best and finally I won the race. The whole stadium (体育场) was clapping for me. This became my most special day.

To most people especially the Americans, the Canadians speak the same language as them. This makes them believe that Canadian English is simply American English. However, there are several reasons why it can be said that the Canadians have their own variant (变体) of the English language. What makes Canadian English so special
Canadian English is a variant of both variants. Because of the fact that their next-door neighbors speak American English, no doubt they were largely influenced by it. However, it is to be noted that the Canadians were strongly against colonization (殖民化) when the Americans tried to force them to join. This showed just how much loyalty (忠诚) they have for the Queen of England. The English spoken by the British and that spoken by the Americans are worlds apart and Canadian English took the best of both worlds to create its own language style.
What’s more, nothing beats the uniqueness (独特性) of the Canadian accent (口音). This accent can go back to the history of the first Canadians. The first people to arrive in Canada were the Irish who were under the rule of Great Britain. However, soon after, a large number of people who came from neighboring America also started to arrive. Many accents mixed into something between the British and the American accent. It created certain mannerisms (习惯) which cannot be found in either British or American English.
When you are in Canada, you cannot help but notice mannerisms used by most Canadians. The word “eh” is one word which has fully come to be connected with the Canadians. You would most likely hear a Canadian speak to you and end his sentence with “eh”.
8.What do most people think of Canadian English
A. It is somewhere in between American and British English.
B. It is less popular than American English.
C. It is no different from American English.
D. It is the same as British English.
9.What did the Americans try to do in history
A. To require the Canadians to change their mannerisms.
B. To ask Canada to take a stand against colonization.
C. To force the Canadians to learn American English.
D. To make Canada part of America’s land.
10.What can be learned about the first Canadians
A. They were from Ireland. B. They hated Americans a lot.
C. They spoke American English. D. They came to Canada through America.
11.How do the Canadians use the word “eh”?
A. To finish a sentence. B. To start a new sentence.
C. To show good manners. D. To express a strong feeling.
Wondering whether it’s worth going for a little jog A new study shows that any amount of running lowers the risk of premature (过早的) death.
In an analysis (分析) of 14 previous studies — from the US, the UK, China and Denmark — the group of researchers from Australia, Thailand and Finland said that increased running participation “would probably lead to improvements in population health.”
The studies they used included 232, 149 participants over time periods ranging from 5.5 to 35 years. Overall, people who ran any distance were connected with a 27% lower risk of death from all causes than those who did not, one of the studies shows. Running was also connected with a 30% and 23% lower risk of death from heart-related disease and cancer, respectively (分别地).
Lead researcher eljko Pedi i , a professor at Victoria University in Melbourne, told CNN: “Our findings may motivate physically inactive people to take up running and those who already run to keep on doing it.” He added that doctors “may be encouraged by our findings to let more people realize that running is a part of ‘lifestyle medicine.’”
In their paper, which will be printed in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the researchers say health professionals are sometimes looking out for the possible danger of encouraging people to run “because vigorous exertion (剧烈运动) has been connected with sudden death.”
Pedi i and his team disagree with this by noting that “the benefit of running is more important than the risk.” However, they do say advice should be given on a case-by-case basis, as running might not be proper for everyone. And although running has a clear health benefit, Pedi i points out that higher “doses ( 剂量)” of running may not necessarily reduce the risk of premature death further.
12.What does the research mainly focus on
A. The influence of running on health. B. The possible risks of running.
C. The proper way to run. D. The best time to run.
13.What does the underlined word “motivate” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Teach. B. Force. C. Inspire. D. Require.
14.What might be health professionals’ attitude to the research findings
A. Totally uninterested. B. Strongly supportive.
C. A bit disappointed. D. A little worried.
15.What is Pedi i ’s advice to people choosing running as a form of exercise
A. Running regularly. B. Taking professional advice.
C. Warming up before running. D. Considering one’s personal condition.

He had to do part-time work to pay his debts. He never imagined what his life would become. Everything felt hopeless. He continued with his life, earning barely enough money to feed his kids.
Today was a bit different. He went to the nearest gas station. He had an extra $2 with which he could buy himself a cheap hot dog. It was a little treat he would give himself. Though it made him feel a bit guilty, he still wanted to do it. As he walked toward the gas station, he saw a man panicking, saying something to a woman in the car. Not knowing why they were so upset, he continued walking until the man called out to him.
“Sir! Sir!” the man shouted and ran toward him. “Yes Is everything OK ” he asked, confused. “Sorry, sir, my wife is in labor (临产), but we’re out of gas. I had no money on me. Could you help me anyway ” the man asked. His desperate eyes pulled at Sean’s heartstrings. “Well, sir. ②考查副词。句意:如果你可以选择让时光倒流,你会做些什么不同的事情来让你的生活变得更好?修饰动词do需要用副词differently。故填differently。
③考查形容词。句意:还是你已经过上了你想要的美好生活?空格处需要形容词作定语修饰名词life。故填wonderful。
④考查代词。句意:他们认为自己拥有世界上所有的时间,却忽视了自己的梦想。修饰名词dreams应该用形容词性物主代词,they的形容词性物主代词是their。故填their。
故填is。
空格后的the choice是名词,应该用介词短语because of,后接the choice作宾语。故填of。

故填that/which。
结合句型it is time to do sth.,意为:是该干某事的时候了。故填it。

Dear Peter,
Thanks for your email. I’m happy to give you my suggestions for joining your school basketball team.
I think you should join the team as you are good at playing basketball. Joining a team can help you make new friends, let you exercise without feeling like you’re exercising, and give you a lot more pride in your school. What’s more, it’s nice to have a break from studying after a long school day.

The following morning, Sean received a video call from Matthew. “I really appreciate your generosity,” thanked Matthew, casting Sean a warm look. “Don’t mention it,” replied Sean, beaming shyly. After knowing Sean’s distressed situation, Matthew suggested, “I’m desperate for a partner now and I was wondering whether I have the honor to have you here.” With a mixed feeling of thrill and gratitude surging through Sean, he nodded eagerly, his eyes sparkling with joy.
Paragraph 2:
Through Sean’s introduction, Matthew learned Sean had been a senior regional manager. As an experienced manager, Sean listed his previous achievements. Fairly impressed by Sean’s achievements, Matthew decided to offer Sean a position on the spot. Several years passed by, with the hard work and persistence of Sean, his family got rid of poverty and moved into his dream residence. Odds might not be in our favor.
