When physicist Stephen Hawking died in 2018 at the age of 76, the world mourned (哀悼), after the loss, there remains the enormous legacy of the scientist and the man to consider.
Despite being a famous expert in cosmology and black holes, there is still much to discover about Hawking. In Stephen Hawking: A memoir of friendship and physics, theoretical physicist Leonard Mlodinow offers a close glimpse inside the famous scientist’s life, ranging from his early days at university and diagnosis at age 21 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to his later status as an international celebrity.
After co-authoring two books with Hawking, Mlodinow isn’t short of stories, particularly from time spent working together on their book The Grand Design. Hawking lived a colourful life often filled with hardship, and the possibility of death was never far away. Far from letting this be a setback, it is what Hawking credit s for his achievements. “It helped me focus,” he tells Mlodinow after dinner one night.
Even so, Mlodinow admits that initially he couldn’t help but feel sorry for Hawking, living with a condition that required round-the-clock care and eventually left him unable to speak or voluntarily move anything but his eyes, brows and mouth. However, writes Mlodinow, “overtime all that pity would disappear like one of Stephen’s black holes”, adding that it “occurred to me that Stephen had proved himself to be an iron man in a fragile man’s facade (外表)”. That view becomes one that readers will also tend to adopt as Mlodinow looks back.
Achievement came in many forms for Hawking, who refused to be restricted in thought or deed. As Mlodinow writes: “Often we limit our chances at success by limiting the goals toward which we strive. Stephen never did that. We can get used to anything, and we can accomplish, if not anything, then at least much more than we give ourselves credit for. To grow close to Stephen was to understand this.”
24.What can we learn about Mlodinow
A.He was one of Hawking’s friends. B.He worked for Hawking for many years.
C.He wrote two books about Hawking’s life. D.He was the strongest competitor for Hawking.
25.How did Mlodinow feel about Hawking’s living condition at first
A.Admiring. B.Sympathetic. C.Envious. D.Puzzled.
26.What can we infer about Hawking from the last paragraph
A.He kept pushing his limits. B.He had extraordinary talent.
C.He was good at educating others. D.He was a man with definite goals.
27.What is the purpose of this text
A.To praise a relationship. B.To introduce a book.
C.To honor a breakthrough. D.To promote a physics theory.

Human rubbish can be a cockatoo’s treasure. In Sydney, the birds have learned how to open dustbins and throw rubbish around in the streets as they hunt for leftovers. People are now fighting back.
When cockatoos learn how to open dustbin lids, people change their behavior, using things like bricks to weigh down lids (盖子), to protect their trash from being thrown about. That’s usually a low-level protection and then the cockatoos figure out how to defeat that. That’s when people strengthen their efforts, and the cycle continues.
Tricks such as attempting to scare the parrots off with rubber snakes don’t work very well. Nor does blocking access with heavy objects such as bricks; cockatoos use force to push them off. Hanging weights from the front of the lid or placing items such as sneakers and sticks through a bin’s back handles work better. Researchers didn’t see any birds get inside bins with these higher levels of protection.
The findings suggest an arms race, but the missing piece is how the birds will respond as people try new ways of blocking bins. Some survey responses suggest that the parrots are learning.
Cockatoos may stay away from strategies that take too long to beat. Bricks, for instance, are easy to quickly push off a bin; breaking sticks placed through the bin’s back handle could take more time. Perhaps if enough people in a neighborhood adopt a highly effective method, Clark, a behavioral ecologist says, the cockatoos may not find it worth it to stop by.
28.Why are bricks used in the battle against cockatoos
A.To increase the weight of the lids. B.To hit the birds when necessary.
C.To reduce the size of the rubbish. D.To keep the dustbin balanced.
29.Which seems the best way to win the battle presently
A.Using rubber snakes to frighten the parrots. B.Blocking access with objects like bricks.
C.Hanging weights from the back of the lid. D.Placing sticks through a bin’s back handles.
30.What can we learn about cockatoos from the text
A.They are in danger of extinction. B.They are the strongest parrots.
C.They are clever and adaptable. D.They are good at finding treasure.
31.What does Clark’s statement in the last paragraph suggest
A.People are defeated by cockatoos in the battle. B.People should work together to win the battle.
C.People and cockatoos should live in harmony. D.People had better adopt all the cockatoos.

From cottages surrounded by impressive gardens to days spent exploring sandy beaches and deep woods filled with wildlife, in My Family and Other Animals, English writer Gerald Durrell provided a vivid account of his family’s time on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s.
Come for the arresting descriptions of Corfu landscapes and stay for Durrell’s laugh-out-loud tales of his unusual family. This book, Durrell wrote humorously in the introduction, “was intended to be a nostalgic (怀旧的) account of natural history, but in the first few pages, I made the mistake of introducing my family.”
Durrell, later known for his zoo keeping and the preservation of wildlife, was just a child during his family’s five-year stay in Corfu. He is 10-year-old Gerry in the book—curious, passionate about animals and a detailed storyteller of his strange family: his imaginative elder brother Larry with his literary ambitions, loves truck sister Margo, sport y brother Leslie and his ever-calm, loving mother.
Durrell’s attention to detail is what makes the book so winning, with every sight, sound and smell of the island brought to life. One minute you’ll be laughing as Larry’s clever literary friends walk down to the daffodil-yellow cottage, the next you’ll be catching your breath as Durrell describes swimming at night in the Ionian Sea: “Lying on my back in the silky water, staring at the sky, only moving my hands and feet slightly, I was looking at the Milky Way stretching like a silk scarf across the sky and wondering how many stars it contained.”
My Family and Other Animals is quite difficult to classify, being one part travel, one part autobiography, one part natural history, and one part comedy, with a thread of descriptive language running throughout that sometimes raises it nearly to poetry.
As a real delight to read, it’s the perfect literary escapism for any adult or older teenager who is currently walking down a tough road in life.
32.Which word best describes Durrell’s life in Corfu
A.Diverse. B.Busy. C.Risky. D.Tough.
33.What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 2
A.I just introduced my family by mistake. B.I shouldn’t have introduced my family.
C.I gave false information about my family. D.I couldn’t help introducing my family.
34.What are paragraph 4 and 5 mainly about
A.Durrell’s rich imagination. B.Some interesting plots of the book.
C.The book’s writing feature. D.Some vivid descriptions of the island.
35.What is the purpose of this text
A.To share an experience. B.To introduce a writing style.
C.To recommend a book. D.To describe an unusual place.

As Alina sat quietly in the patient room, her five-year-old son, Tony, was lying on her chest. He was suffering from a serious disease and they were staying in the hospital for several days.
Alina’s mind was working overtime. She was worrying about money. She worked as a manager for a retail chain, and it was the busiest time of the year. Alina had already taken almost all her vacation time and knew she would not be paid for the days she was now taking off. Worse still, she had only a couple of hundred dollars in the bank.
But Alina’s main concern washers on. She didn’t know how she would be able to manage, working full-time and looking after him. She was depressed and felt the tears well up and spillover.
And that’s when Lorna arrived. She had been Alina’s assistant. Quickly blinking back the tears, Alina welcomed her in. Lorna came to offer some support and brought a card signed by the office staff. Alina was touched, for she didn’t expect they were thinking of her during a completely crazy workweek. Full of grate fullness, she took the card and discovered there was more. Inside the card was a note, which said, “Dear Alina, we want to help. Each person who has signed this card has donated one vacation day into your account. We know you need to spend some time with your son and we don’t want you to worry about having to take time off without pay.”
So moved by their kindness, Alina was speechless and got quite choked up, tears held back earlier now rolling down her cheeks.
After Lorna left, Alina calmed down. She looked at her son, lost in thought. “Tomorrow is Christmas Day. What shall I do ” Because of several days of bad sleep, drowsily Alina fell asleep.
