◆ Reading Club 1 Space Heroes
In the history of space exploration, hundreds of astronauts have made the journey into space. Men and women from all over the world have studied, trained and worked hard in order to go into space. It is a job that calls for a special blend of skill, talent and bravery, as well as great physical and mental strength. There are many risks and dangers, but the work is extremely important, and the knowledge that we can gain from exploring space is invaluable.
General Understanding
Read the text and answer the following questions.
1
Why did the US president make a speech about the Challenger disaster
Because seven American astronauts died when the Challenger exploded and he felt their families’ loss.
2
What were the purposes of the Shenzhou V mission
Carrying the first Chinese astronaut into space, for scientific gathering of information and to express the wishes of Chinese people to explore and use space peacefully.
Critical Thinking
3
Why does working in space call for a special blend of skill, talent and bravery as well as physical and mental strength Explain in your own words and include evidence.
Space missions require extremely hard physical training, advanced scientific skills and very high educational qualifications. They also require fearlessness because there are many dangers and risks. So, an astronaut needs to be many things: in top physical condition, a scientist and above all, a hero.
◆ Reading Club 2 Anne Frank and Her Diary
Since 1947, The Diary of Anne Frank has been one of the most powerful accounts of the experience of the Holocaust and has helped to give a human face to the suffering it involved. Although it was written by a young girl in terrible situation, it conveys a message of courage and hope.
General Understanding

Who was Anne Frank What happened to her family during the World War II
1
Anne Frank was Jewish girl from Germany who died during the Second War. She is famous for writing a diary while hiding away from the Nazis. Her family had to move to the Netherlands. They spent two years living in a small and crowed annexe. Everyone had to be quite and she was always afraid of being caught.
2
Why did Anne keep a diary and write in it almost every day
To keep busy, to remain positive and optimistic, to keep a record of her ideas/experience, to escape from the situation she was in, etc.
Critical Thinking
3
Why is her diary one of the most important diaries ever written
Her diary showed courage and hope in times of extreme hardship, and inspired young people everywhere. Also, it gives a very clear image of what it was like to be a Jew during the Second World War and what extreme situations they had to go through in order to survive.

Grammar
This is the student for whom I bought a book.
This is the ship by which I went to Shanghai.
They live in a house, of which the windows are made of glass.
Is this the car for which you paid a high price
In the dark street, there wasn't a single person to whom she could turn for help.
(pay…for sth.)
(turn to sb. for help)
He brought the result with which the boss was satisfied.
Do you still remember the day on which we met for the first time
I can't remember the age at which he won the prize.
(be satisfied with)
(on the day)
(at the age)
This is the pilot with whom my brother has worked for ten years.
This is the pilot by whom my son was saved.
The old man has two sons, both of whom are doctors.
This is the book for which you asked.
Is this the book (which/ that) she is looking for
This is the book (which/ that) you asked for.
常见的这类短语有at the foot of, at the back of, in front of, on the top of等。
They stayed in a big hotel, in front of which was a garden.
Her sons, both of whom work abroad, ring her up every week.
Join the pairs of sentences using relative pronouns.
11
1. We climbed to the top of the mountain. We had a beautiful view from there.
2. David is my friend. I often play tennis with him.
3. He has 20 books. Only two of them are interesting.
4. This is quite an interesting job. I really want to apply for it.
We climbed to the top of the mountain, from which we had a beautiful view.
David is my friend with whom I often play tennis.
He has 20 books of which only two of them are interesting.
This is quite an interesting job for which I really want to apply.

Start with a smile to make your audience feel welcome. Audience depend on facial expressions to add to meaning.
A speech that is monotone, without variation in tone and melody, will bore an audience. Decide which words and passages need extra attention and increase the tone to emphasise these points. If something sound exaggerated or false, your audience can turn against you.
Speak so that the audience can hear you. To draw the audience’s attention to certain parts of a speech, try varying the volume.
Begin in a neutral position, with hands at your sides. This is an open gesture, welcoming the audience. Use gestures sparingly, as they can detract from the speech. A hand gesture can emphasise a point.
Needs to be addressed to the audience, at their level. The information has been researched and is supported. Made use of repeated phrases for emphasis.
