Have you ever enjoyed afternoon tea
How do you like it
More than just a nice warm drink
There’s more to teatime than just a nice warm drink. Different cultures combine tea with different foods or snacks, turning teatime into a social occasion.
◆ Reading Club 1 Teatime
1
Read the text. Answer the questions.
1) Why did the Duchess of Bedford invite friends to come for tea
in the afternoon
2) What does yum cha mean
General Understanding
People often got very hungry during the long break between two meals. She invited friends to tea so they could have an afternoon meal.
Yum cha is translated as “drink tea”, and it means to go to a restaurant to eat dim sum.
2
Search online to find more similarities and differences between English and Southern Chinese tea cultures. Make a list and discuss.
Critical Thinking

Differences: Yum cha is an older tradition than Afternoon tea; the time of day when Yum cha and Afternoon Tea usually enjoyed is different; the types of food served are different.
Similarity: Both involve tea.

Critical Thinking
1) In the last paragraph, what does the writer mean by “I think it
isn’t about where you live-it’s about how you live.”
2) How does she come to such a conclusion
1&2 How you live is more important than where you live, because she has lived both in the city and country.
3) Do you agree with this conclusion Why or why not

一般式 to do to be done
完成式 to have done to have been done
进行式 to be doing
完成进行式 to have been doing
Eg: It took us two hours to finish the job.
Eg: He managed to escape from the fire.
Eg: I don't know what to do next/how to do it next.
Eg: I find it necessary to learn a foreign language.
Eg: He warned me to be careful.
可以用动词不定式作宾补的动词有:ask, tell, order, want, get, would like, like, advise, invite, allow, help, wish, warn, expect, would prefer, encourage.

The book is believed to be useful.(被动语态)
③ There +不定式
Eg: We didn't expect there to be so many people there.
④ 在动词feel(一感), hear, listen to(二听), have, let, make(三让), notice, see, watch, observe, look at(五看)(即:吾看三室两厅一感觉)等后面的补足语中,不定式不带to,但变为被动语态后,必须带to。
Eg: They saw the boy fall off the tree.
Eg: I often help him (to) clean the room.
I helped him (to)find his things.
Eg: I have a lot of work to do.(动宾关系)
He is looking for a room to live in.(动状关系)
He is the first person to think of the idea.(主谓关系)
He has got a chance to go abroad.(同位关系)
Eg: Do you have anything else to say
