Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals.
Many kinds of birds are very successful in fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. Not making nests, they get into other birds' nests secretly to lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can be dishonest and sneaky(偷偷摸摸的).When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As is mentioned above, animals behave dishonestly for survival. Is it OK to lie for us humans?

Audrey Hepburn (奥黛丽.赫本)won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her first major American movie, Roman Holiday, which was released in 1953. But she is remembered as much for her aid work as for her acting.
Born in Belgium in 1929, Audrey's father was British and her mother was Dutch.
Audrey was sent to live at a British school for part of her childhood. During World War
II, she lived and studied in the Netherlands. Her mother thought it would be safe from German attacks. Audrey studied dance as a teenager and when she returned to London after the war. But she realized she wasn't going to be a ballerina(芭蕾舞女演员).So she began taking acting parts in stage shows. Later she began to get small parts in movies.
But it was Audrey Hepburn's move to America that brought her true fame. In 1951 she played the character "Gigi" in the Broadway play of the same name to great critical praise. Two years later, Roman Holiday made her a star at the age of 24.
Audrey made more than 25 movies. Among her most popular roles was Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961. Three years later, she played Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
She was married twice. In 1989, the UN Children's Fund named Audrey a goodwill ambassador. She travelled all over the world in support of UNICEF(联合国儿童基金会) projects. She often gave 15 interviews a day to gain money and support for UNICEF projects.
Audrey Hepburn often said her loyalty to UNICEF was the result of her experiences as a child during World War U. She said she knew what it was like to be starving and to be saved by international aid. She was a goodwill ambassador until her death in 1993 from colon(结肠) cancer.
29. In Paragraph 1, the underlined part "her aid work" refers to ______ .

In England three foreign gentlemen studied the information on the post sign at a bus stop. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They prepared to get on. Suddenly people rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted rude words about the foreigners. The bus conductor came to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts, You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own.
A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. Also in India, you might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and consider that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India shaking one's head means expressing agreement. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to express "yes"—a nod means "no".
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting, talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence (冒犯).It is considered too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand avoid touching the head of an adult.
Attitudes to women vary a lot around the world. In Japan, for example, men usually plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home.
Knowing about customs and attitudes is useful when you are traveling, but you also need to know the language used to express different degrees of formality (礼节).
33. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed because ______ .
A. they thought they were not respected
B. they didn't know the English language
C. the bus conductor told them to jump the queue
D. they didn't know the custom of lining up for a bus
34. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?
A. In Europe, using the left hand is considered less respected.
B. In Japan, it's considered impolite to touch the head of an adult.
C. In Thailand, you'd better cross your legs when sitting or talking.
D. In India, the left hand is not used as a sign of respect to others.
35. We can infer from the passage that ______ .
A. in Japan, men are still the centre of the family
B. attitudes to women vary a lot around the world
C. in Asian countries, women are equal to men in every field
D. learning a language well is a necessity before going abroad

How to develop courage by overcoming daily fears
Sometimes when thinking of courage, we think it only applies to rare and uncommon situations. Yet our ordinary lives can also be full of courage, even if we are not facing the end of a gun, a wild animal or a dangerous criminal. Courage doesn't just mean doing heroic acts. 36 In fact, where there is fear on a daily basis, there are opportunities for you to show your courage. Here are some suggestions to develop courage by overcoming daily fears. Recognizing your fears.
By realizing that you're fearful, you are more likely to get to the bottom of what your fear is. 37 You might come to understand that you're afraid of failing or taking chances. You may be fearful simply because you don't have confidence in yourself. The key is not to dwell on your fear, but rather to understand what it is what you're worried about.
Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen.
If you hesitate to take action, ask yourself this: what's the worst that can happen? Then prepare to accept it. Then go on to improve on the worst. Is failure the worst thing that can happen? No, absolutely not. 38 Doing nothing is actually the worst thing that can happen. When you take no action, you are assured of getting nowhere.
Take action.
Courage comes from taking action. 39 You need to act to overcome your fear. Your action may put you into discomfort, but you have to just do it. And your action can prevent you from being stuck.
40
To build up your confidence, you need to do the same thing over and over again. Soon you will discover that less courage is needed because you have already gained mastery. You are able to move decisively forward.
A. Share your fears with others.
B. Practice, practice and practice.
C. So you are already in a comfort zone.
D. You cannot think courage comes just in one day.
E. Each undesired result is just one more step towards your goal.
F. Finding out what is truly holding you back,
G. You needn't wait for an emergency to occur to develop courage.

Talk on the phone while you're driving? Fix your makeup? Check your e-mail? A survey released on Monday shows 81 percent of Americans do more than drive when they're behind the wheel.
More than 8 of 10 people surveyed said they adjust the radio or music when they drive, while 73 percent talk on the phone, 68 percent eat, 19 percent send text messages and 5 percent check their e-mails.
The problem with that is driving requires focus and multi-tasking while driving puts you and your fellow drivers at risk. Drivers in the survey also admitted changing seats with passengers, watching a movie, nursing a baby while driving.
Younger drivers multi-task the most. "The consequences for young drivers are severe, with car accidents being the number one cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 27. The bottom line is if it can be done in the kitchen, bathroom, office or bedroom, it should not be done in the car," said Bill Windsor, associate vice president of Safety at Nationwide.
