Some places are to be appreciated in winter. Read on to discover these winter resorts around the world that are enough to wake you up.
Gullfoss Waterfall, Iceland
The Gullfoss Waterfall has two impressive layers, reaching up to 36 feet and 69 feet, and it's quite dramatic to see the golden light reflected off its steep water at sunset. If you want to catch a sight of the polar lights on your trip, you can also see it from September to mid-April in Iceland.
Tromso, Norway
Tromso is a charming fishing village and energetic university town. Located on the Norwegian Sea off the norther coast of Norway, Tromso is particularly suitable for winter holidays as it is a popular gateway to the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by picturesque glaciers (冰川), the winter landscape of this region is unforgettable. You can also take part in many guided tours designed around the local Sami culture and maritime history.
Banff National Park, Canada
As Canada's first national park, Banff National Park offers excellent views of the snow-covered Canadian Rockies. Located about two hours' drive from Calgary, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cross-country skiing opportunities.
Crater Lake National Park, United States
Crater Lake National Park is especially notable during the winter when the volcano lake is covered in snow. Crater Lake was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption some 7, 700 years ago and is now a must-see for travelers seeking natural experiences, such as camping and cross-country skiing.

To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is to read a wide variety of English books Yet one may be at a loss to choose the right books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It's not the vocabulary that troubled me. but rather the way Austen makes sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too hard for me at that time. My enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel A Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward (简洁的)style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you'd better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.
However, if you limit yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell's work. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are necessary.
Never follow others' suggestions and opinions blindly, however famous or influential(有很大影响的)the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine by ourselves. As a saying goes, “One man's meat is another man's poison”. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
24. What made the first English novel that the author read hard to understand
A. Complicated conversations. B. Sentences and Austen's thinking style.
C. The old-fashioned vocabulary. D. Not knowing the social background.
25. Which word can best describe the author's first English novel reading experience
A. Enjoyable. B. Unique. C. Terrible. D. Inspirational.
26. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph
A. Don't be affected by others' ideas easily. B. Read books that are instructive.
C. Choose books that challenge us most. D. Compare books before buying.
27. What is the author's purpose of writing the passage
A. Give comments on literature works
B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.
C. Encourage people to read more English books.
D. Recommend first class books to English learners.

The World's oldest pen pals have both turned 100 after 84 years of transatlantic (跨大洋)letters.
Geoff Banks from Honiton, Devon, UK and Celesta Byrne, from the US, started to write to each other when they were just 16 in 1938. They met as part of an educational project to put British and American students in contact and 84 years later they still keep contacting.
Geoff once was a retired engineer. He said, “I can't quite remember how we could get in touch, but I was talking to Celesta recently. And I think it was something to do with an American school's plan. The plan matched us up with Americans for a pen pal relationship. and somehow I ended up with this letter from an American girl, and we just kept contacting ever since. There were a couple of years when we tried very hard to keep in touch because of the war. Now of course she is poorly sighted, so I contact mainly by email to one of her daughters who lives nearby. Email is much easier for me these days too. because I can't write very well anymore. In the email, we just talk about our daily lives and our own families. She's always been there to write to. even if it was just birthday cards and Christmas cards.”
Though they have chatted for over 80 years, the pair has only ever met twice—their first meeting in 2002 while Geoff visited New York, and then two years later. Nowadays, Geoff is a great grandfather. He lives a happy life. He has three sons who settles across the world and many more grandchildren. “I have this new thing called Zoom. 28. What may bring Geoff and Celesta to be pen pals
A. An American school's plan. B. Geoff's visit to New York.
C. The world war. D. Communication technology.
29. Why did Geoff use email to write letters later
A. Because he relied on Zoom to chat. B. Because he suffered from eye disease.
C. Because he was unable to write well. D. Because writing is too boring for him.
30. What can we infer from the passage
A. Pen pals are true friends. B. True friendship survives time and space.
C. Letters were not allowed during the war. D. Technology builds friendship.
31. What does the passage manily talk about
A. A Zoom: a new technology to chat. B. A great way to keep in touch.
C. Importance of being pen pals. D. Oldest pen pals in the world.

In a world-record effort to help save a valuable sea creature, Australian scientists have released hundreds of baby seahorses into the wild. The tiny seahorses are endangered, and the scientists hope the new seahorses will help their numbers grow.
Seahorses get their name because they look a bit like horses. They aren't great swimmers, even though they're fish. They often use their tails to hold onto something in the water. They mostly live in warm, shallow waters around the world. They are often found in coral reefs, in beds of seagrass, and areas where rivers empty into the sea. Seahorses form an important part of the ocean's food chain. They eat tiny sea creatures and are eaten by bigger sea animals.
Many kinds of seahorses are often threatened by the human actions. Sometimes they're caught and sold as pets. They are also caught by accident when people are trying to catch other fish.
To begin the project, scientists collected three pregnant seahorses in January. Those seahorses were brought back to the aquarium(水族馆) in Sydney. After the babies were born, the scientists kept them there for five months, feeding the baby seahorses shrimps (小虾)to help them grow strong. Scientist Mitchell Brennan says, “They don't have a stomach. so they have to eat constantly.”
About a month before the young seahorses were released, the scientists created eight underwater “hotels” for them. The hotels look like cages, providing a safe place for the seahorses to develop. Putting the hotels into the sea early allowed the cages to be covered with small sea life that can help provide food for the seahorses.
This is the fifth time the scientists have released seahorses into the area, and this time was a record. Around 380 seahorses were released. The researchers put tiny tags (标记)under the skin of many of the seahorses to help track them in the future.
32. What does the undrelined word “released” mean in Paragraph 1
A. Published. B. Apologised. C. Destroyed. D. Freed.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Dangers the seahorses face. B. Living conditions the seahorses need.
C. Areas the seahorses live in. D. The types of the seahorses.
34. Why are the eight “hotels” put into the sea early
A. To differ the project from the former ones. B. To avoid danger the scientists may face
C. To provide food for the seahorses. D. To help track the seahorses in the future.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. A New Study on Endangered Animals
B. A Record Number of Baby Seahorses Were Released
C. Underwater “Hotels” for Baby Shrimps
D. New Methods of Finding Endangered Seahorses

My wife and I went to the Animal Emergency Hospital on a Good Friday last year. We ended up there with Jack, a beautiful dog. Any pet that is there on a Good Friday is in bad trouble as most vets(兽医诊所)are closed.
Jack was seriously ill and they helped him. Before we left we said we were not rich but we wanted to do an act of kindness and gave 1, 500 for someone they thought really needed the help.
Within 18 hours the money ended up helping a single mother whose dog had been bitten (咬)by a snake. She had at least one child with serious illness, so the decision had to be made to help the child with the treatment the mother had booked, or to help the dog. We were able to help the dog so she could support her family. The hospital gave her my phone number and I received a heartfelt message from a stranger saying thank you. The vets also said it restored their faith in humanity and good people, which was nice.
Sadly I lost my best friend Jack almost 2 months ago. He was such a beautiful dog that I feel honored to share my life with him.
A few days later, I went again in the morning to the Animal Emergency Hospital and gave $1, 500 something intended for my beautiful dog Jack. And we are still not rich, but acts of kindness are important. The fact is that emergency vets are not cheap for ordinary pet owners. I hope the money can help someone who finds themselves in a terrible situation tomorrow and it helps their family stay together. I talked with some pet owners there and they said that sometimes they really couldn't afford treatment for their pets. I realized that I should do more then.

To arouse our appreciation for natural beauty, our school organized an outing to the botanical garden last Friday, which left us with an unforgettable memory.
We took a bus and arrived at the botanical garden around 8 o'clock. Many trees were in full blossom. The flowers were gently swaying in the breeze. Some of us took out their cameras to capture this breathtaking scenery. Some were under the sea of blossom to relax, some taking a walk to explore the beauty. What an amazing experience!
During this activity, we realized that there are so much joy and beauty in our life.
第二节(满分25分)
参考范文:
I invited my close friends to my house for a party about pet treatment. At the party, I asked some dog owners to share photos of their dogs' lives and tell interesting stories about their interaction with pets. I also invited professionals to talk about some common rescue methods to avoid aggravating our pet's illness. Everyone benefited saying that they learned a lot about pet therapy from the meeting excitedly. But others cited family difficulties and lack of extra funds to treat their pets.
I decided to start a rescue group for sick pets. On the one hand, I posted online to recruit people who had experience in animal treatment to join our rescue team, and on the other hand, I conducted publicity in different kinds of communities to find pets which need rescue help. More and more families in need received timely help, who gave our team great recognition. Helping others made us happy and made our life more meaningful.
