Tips on setting effective goals
Setting goals is important in many ways. The following tips may help us set effective goals.
Set goals that can be achieved. You should set goals based on your abilities and skills.
Break big goals down into small ones. When you do so, they will seem easier to reach, which will give you the encouragement to achieve your long-term goal.
Write your goals on paper. It is a good idea to put your goals where you can see them, such as on your bedroom wall. This will remind you of what you are working for and keep you focused.
写作 第二节
Before his mom asked him the reason, Holden had already left. Once back to school, he walked into the court and said to Flex regretfully, “I’m so sorry, Mr Flex. It was my mistake. ” Then he said he could clean the floor on his own. The old man wasn’t angry and he just comforted Holden, “It’s OK. Let’s do it together. ” Using the cleaning tools, the two worked hard to clean the floor. Soon they managed to make the floor as clean as before. Holden was filled with excitement.
Then Holden told Flex, “Let me help you cut the grass in return for your help!” Mr Flex refused. However, Holden kept saying that he needed to make up for his mistake. Then they worked together again. Although it was tiring, Holden carefully helped cut the grass. Finally, they completed the work before sunset. When they parted, Flex praised Holden for his honesty and hard work. Holden happily returned home and told his mom what had happened. His mom hugged him, telling him it was right to be responsible for his mistake.

As an engineer, I have designed electronic control systems for more than 30 years, and I had expected to do so until I retired(退休). My wife, Krisztina Valter, is a scientist. One year, she went to a scientific activity with me. Most knowledge of biology went over my head, but one speaker attracted my attention. Jochen Zeil, a professor who studies animal behaviour, presented a model of how insects could work out a way to go to a target despite having small brains.
At lunchtime, my wife introduced us. Zeil and I had a very enjoyable discussion about his idea and biology. When we parted, I joked that if he wanted another PhD student, he could count me in. About a month later he e-mailed me:“Haven't heard from you. Have you enrolled(登记入学)yet "And that's how, at the age of 53, I became a part-time doctoral student in biology.
My background in biology had been out of date for many years, so I needed to learn the basics fast. It was not easy, but I got a lot of help from other laboratory members and my wife. The more I learnt, the more I realized how little I knew. Every paper caused the need to read more. It was tiring, and at times disappointing, but brought a lot of fun. You read, think, and suddenly things fall into place.
Now, at the age of 61, this period is nearly at an end. New knowledge enriches(充实) you, regardless of how old you are. My advice is that if you have the opportunity to enter a new field, take it.

B. To show the importance of getting a degree.
C. To encourage us to develop a love for science.
D. To remind us sometimes we need to stop to reflect.

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot(智能聊天程序)from OpenAI, an AI technology company in San Francisco. It can produce any kind of writing as required. Many schools are afraid that ChatGPT could result in dishonesty and harm learning. So the tool, called AI Text Classifier from the same maker, is invented. Its task is to decide whether the writing was produced by students or by AI programs.
OpenAI warns that its new tool—like others already in use—is not perfect. The method for detecting(发现)AI-written writing “will be wrong sometimes, ”said Jan Leike of OpenAI. “Because of that, ”he added, “it shouldn't be only depended upon when making decisions. ”
Teenagers and college students were among the millions of people who began experimenting with ChatGPT after it was put into use on November 30. The tool is a free service on OpenAI's website. Many people have found ways to use it creatively and harmlessly. Still, some teachers are worried that it could be used to cheat.
So far public schools in some cities, such as New York City and Los Angeles, began to block(阻止)its use in classrooms and on school computers. Public schools in Seattle blocked ChatGPT on all school computers but then opened it to teachers. One spokesman Tim Robinson said teachers wanted to use ChatGPT as a teaching tool. "We can't afford to ignore it, ”Robinson said. Students could also use the service as a “personal teacher” or to help create ideas when doing homework, Robinson said.
OpenAI talked about its new tool on a blog recently. But the company added that the tool could help to find some mistakes in writing as well as catch cheating. The longer a piece of writing is, the better the tool is at deciding whether an AI system or a human wrote something.
28. Who are more likely to use AI Text Classifier
A. Parents. B. Students. C. Teachers. D. Writers
29. What does Leike think of AI Text Classificr
A. It needs to be tested. B. It may make mistakes.
C. It is a perfect AI tool. D. It is really disappointing
30. Why are some teachers worried about ChatGPT
A. It costs the users a lot of money.
B. It often makes wrong decisions.
C. They can't use it as a teaching tool.
D. Students will take advantage of it to cheat.
31. What can we learn from the example of ChatGPT
A. Every coin has two sides. B. A good beginning is half done.
C. A bit is better than nothing. D. Rome was not built in one day.
D
Some pickles(榨菜)can sometimes make a meal taste better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed:"digital pickles". In fact, they are the attractive videos people watch while eating.
The topic received more than 16 million clicks online and about 100, 000 people joined in the discussion. Instead of being with friends and family during a meal, many young people in China are kept company by TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food tastes better with the “digital pickles”.
Can this habit affect your diet According to a research paper, you may eat more unconsciously(无意识地). The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating habits on four different days. Those included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and doing nothing else. After analyzing(分析)their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction(使人分心的事物)resulted in taking in more calories by about 15 percent.
To explore the reason, the team also invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to sounds about another person eating and the other listened to those that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals. When eating with the "digital pickles", our attention can be attracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
This works not only for eating meals but other demanding tasks as well. A research project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which require lots of attention cheat many into overeating. The team invited 120 volunteers to do different tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study suggests that if you're eating or drinking while your attention is attracted by a highly engaging task, you're less likely to tell how full you feel, "one author explained.
32. What do "digital pickles" refer to in paragraph 1
A. A new type of vegetable.
B. Popular electronic products online.
C. Videos people watch while eating.
D. Digital games suitable for families.
33. Which of the following is caused by "digital pickles"
A. Young people become more social.
B. Diners watching videos forget to eat.
C. People's cooking skills are improved.
D. Food may turn out to be more attractive.

A. The group focusing on a magazine.
B. The group listening to others eating.
C. The group eating without a distraction.
D. The group imagining attractive activities.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Enjoying meals with a video. B. Figuring out how full you are.

“Come on, Holden! Let's go! Let's go!”Andrew said anxiously. They picked up the cans and ran away. Holden thought it was lucky that no one discovered what he had done. An hour later, he passed by the basketball court alone and saw the school's old cleaner Flex was cleaning the paint up. And he heard the principal(校长)talking with the cleaner.
“We have a meeting here tomorrow. This needs to be cleaned up immediately!”the principal told the poor old man, who was hanging his head and trying hard to clean up the mess. However, the paint was oil-based, and a large area of the floor was covered with paint; cleaning it was clearly a very difficult task.
But Flex replied he'd make sure it was ready for the next day and kept cleaning, with sweat (汗)flowing down his face. Before he left, the principal reminded Flex, “By the way, please don't forget to cut the grass around the basketball court today. ”
Holden felt terrible while watching the old man trying to make up for his mistake. But he decided to turn a blind eye to it. However, on his way home, the picture of the old man struggling to deal with his mess kept coming to his mind. It made Holden so regretful.
When he returned home, Holden decided that he needed to be responsible for his own mistake. He quickly put down his schoolbag and told his mother that he needed to go back to school
