No one can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting(预报).
For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. That many people feel their joints(关节) hurt is a sign of wet weather. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably approach.
Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

Australia’s koalas ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )could die out within 30 years unless immediate action is taken to stop the losing in population, according to researchers. They say development, climate change and bushfires have all combined to reduce the number of wild koalas sharply.
The Australian Koal ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a Foundation said a recent survey showed the population could have dropped by more than half in the past six years. The number of koalas was once estimated to be more than 100,000, but now is as few as 43,000.
The foundation colle ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cted field data from 1,800 sites and 80,000 trees to calculate the numbers. In one area in northern Queensland estimated to have 20,000 koalas a decade ago, a team of eight people could not find a single animal in four days of searching.
The foundation said besides problems caused by cutting down forests, hotter and drier conditions because of global warming had reduced the nutritional value of their main food, eucalyptus (桉树) leaves, leading to poor nutrition for them. Koalas, which live in the forests in Australia’s east and south, are very picky about what types of the leaves they eat.
Foundation chief Debor ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ah Tabart said: “The koalas are missing everywhere we look. It’s really no tree, no me. If you keep cutting down trees you don’t have any koalas.”
She is hoping the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )new figures will persuade the government’s Threatened Species Steering Committee (TSSC) to list the koala as threatened. But committee chairman Bob Beeton said a decision was not likely recently and the koala’s status as one of the country’s favourite animals would not be a factor. “There’s a number of species which are attractive and people have special feelings towards them. We don’t consider that,” Mr Beeton said.
29. The writer give ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s the example of the area in northern Queensland in Paragraph 3 to show that _____.

B. the number of koalas is dropping quickly
C. koalas usually live in wild mountainous areas
D. the environment is being polluted seriously
30. Global warming i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s an important cause of koalas’ reduction because _____.
A. koalas can hardly stand the hot weather
B. koalas cannot get enough water to drink
C. the leaves koalas eat are losing nutritional value
D. the leaves koalas eat cannot grow in hot weather
31. According to Bob Beeton, _____.
A. koalas are his favourite animals
B. a decision will be made to protect koalas
C. koalas needn’t be protected at all
D. they needn’t pay special attention to koalas

On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors’ lane (赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.

It is reported that although our genes and environment play an important role, how happy we are largely depends on our choices and activities. The following are just several areas that tend to make a big difference to people’s happiness.
Take a positive attitude
Positive emotions―like joy, gratitude, satisfaction, inspiration and pride― don’t just feel good when we experience them. 36 So although we need to be realistic about life’s ups and downs, it helps to focus on the good aspects of any situation―the glass half full rather than the glass half empty.
Accept who you ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) are and what you are
37 Learning to accept ourselves and being kinder to ourselves when things go wrong will increase our enjoyment of life. It also helps us accept others as they are. Ask a trusted friend or colleague to tell you what they think your real strengths are. 38
39
Caring about others is fundamental to our happiness. Helping other people is not only good for them; it’s good for us too. It makes us happier and can help to improve our health. Giving also creates stronger connections between people and helps to build a happier society.
Take part in something bigger
People who have meaning and purpose in their lives are happier. They also experience less stress, anxiety and depression. 40 It might come from doing a job that makes a difference, or spiritual beliefs, or our family. The answers may be different for each of us but they all involve being connected to something bigger than ourselves.
Our broader social networks bring a sense of belonging.
Nobody is perfect.
Give them a call or offer your support.
Try to make more use of these.
They also help us per ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )form better, and improve our physical health.
But where do we find meaning and purpose
Do things for others.
