With the population of Mandarin, fewer and fewer people can speak dialects. According to the criteria (标准)for judging endangered(濒危) languages, nearly half of the 120 languages existing in China are in decline(减少), more than 20 of which are endangered. In November 2005, Li Yuming, director of the Department of language and text information management(教育部语言文字管理司司长) , pointed out in an interview with Language Weekly《语言周报》, “the disappearance(消失) of a language means the loss(损失) of a culture.”
In the world, there is a universal language(世界通用语)---Esperanto. What is Esperanto(世界语) It is an artificial(人造) language created on the basis of the Indo-European language family(以印欧语系为基础). It aims(旨在) to remove(消除) language barriers(障碍) in international communication and enable all people of the world to live together in harmony(和谐相处) as brothers and sisters. It has twenty-eight letters, written in the Latin alphabet(拉丁字母). There are Esperanto speakers in more than 150 countries and regions throughout the world.
In China, there is also a common language---Mandarin. This week, China has launched(发起) the 23rd National Mandarin Promotion Week(全国推普周)——the population rate(普及率)has reached 80%.
