Welcome to Science on Sundays
Science on Sundays is a programme of free monthly science talks which always brings the latest discoveries in plant science, as well as research related to the plant collection at the Botanic Garden, to the visitors in a 30-minute short period of time. The programme in April is about tulips(郁金香).
Introduction
Time: 2:30 pm on Sundays
Title: In Search of Wild Tulips
Objects: adults and children aged 12+
Speaker: Brett Wilson at University of Cambridge
Background Information
The planted tulips are a common sight in spring gardens around the world, but have you ever considered where wild tulips grow The wild ancestors of our much-loved gardening varieties can mostly be found in the mountains and valleys of Central Asia, far from the Netherlands, where most tulips are grown and bred. At the Botanic Garden, we have a National Tulip Collection where we grow many wild species including plenty of species from Central Asia. Over the last four years, Brett Wilson has been using something learned from books and combining with fieldwork to understand the diversity of tulips, with a view of identifying which species are most at risk of extinction.
Come and listen to Brett speak about the research and the adventures that have occurred in our search to find and protect wild tulips in this remote corner of the world. These will be live face-to-face talks taking place in the Botanic Garden Classroom for those visitors with interest.

Born in 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya, Wangari Maathai spent her childhood in the Kenyan countryside and her young adult life in the United States. She studied biology at Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas, then got a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After returning to Kenya and pursuing her PhD9 (攻读博士学位) at the University of Nairobi, Wangari became the first woman in East Africa to receive a doctor’s degree.
In the 1970s, Wangari was an active member of the National Council of Women of Kenya. Women came to the council in part to search for solutions to the environmental problems—deforestation(滥伐森林) and desertification (荒漠化) had caused many of the resources women relied on for food and clean water to decrease.
With her knowledge of biology and her passion for helping others, Wangari decided to take action. Wangari had two goals in mind: to help restore environmental resources and give women the ability to support their families in a self-sufficient, sustainable way. To achieve her goals, she came up with a practical but effective idea: to plant trees. The trees would reduce the effects of deforestation, in addition to providing food and firewood for local families. Wangari’s plan inspired the formation of the Green Belt Movement in 1977, an organisation devoted to environmental protection and poverty reduction in Kenya.
As the Green Belt Movement grew, Wangari began to focus on several different but interconnected causes: environmental protection and human rights. In the late 1980s, she called on her community to oppose the construction of a skyscraper (摩天大楼) in Uhuru Park, Nairobi’s central public space. In 1999 she led a protest against the privatisation(私有化) of Karura Forest in Nairobi, during which Green Belt Movement members were beaten by private guards. Despite facing ongoing opposition and even danger, Wangari’s belief in her work was never shaken.
Wangari served on the boards of countless environmental organisations, and spoke to members of the United Nations. Due to her tireless work, Wangari received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
24. What do we know about Wangari Maathai
A. She had a hard childhood in Kenya. B. She received an excellent education.

25. What led to the foundation of the Green Belt Movement
A. Wangar’s family’s support. B. Wangari’s achievements in biology.
C. Wangari’s tree-planting idea. D. Wangari’s desire to fight world poverty.
26. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Wangari’s efforts to promote her causes. B. Wangari’s ways to fight for human rights.
C. Wangar’s strategies to earn a fame. D. Wangari’s plans to handle growing opposition.
27. Which of the following best describes Wangari Maathai
A. Honest and hard-working. B. Patient and unselfish.
C. Considerate and generous. D. Determined and inspiring.

Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.
Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame(瘸) throughout his life.
But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no ability to act. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.
In February 1934, in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run-this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world’s fastest mile.
A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one’s self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration (鼓舞人心的人或事) for many, and his story, an obvious evidence to how one can regain his courage even when all difficulties are piled.
28. The first paragraph is intended to ________.
A.function as a brief introduction B.make preparations for statement
C.describe an unforgettable event D.introduce the topic
29. What was the doctor’s opinion about Glenn
A.Glenn was able to walk with his own great effort.
B.Great determination could make a difference to Glenn.
C.There was a slim chance that Glenn could survive.
D.Glenn could live a normal life with the upper half of his body.
30. What do we know about Glenn
A.Glenn took recovery exercise in hospital. B.Glenn inspired people with his moving story.
C.Glenn won the first place in Marathon. D.Glenn organized a track team in college.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Strengthen determination B.Stand up after failure
C.Go after dreams D.Failure is the mother of the success
D
While Ellard Hunting and fellow researchers were out studying the weather at a field station in England, they noticed something unexpected on their instruments. Though there was no storm approaching, the scientists’ electric field monitors recorded a curious increase in atmospheric electric charge(电荷).
Nearby, honeybees that lived in on-site hives were swarming (蜂拥) as they attempted to find a new home. When the team took a closer look at their data, they discovered that the swarming honeybees had created an atmospheric electric charge. The researchers shared more details about their findings in the journal I-science.
“This is the first report of biology as a source of space charge.” says Hunting, a biophysicist at the University of Bristol in England. Scientists had known that individual bees carry a small charge while flying through the air, caused by the friction of their body parts against the air and each other. It’s similar to how rubbing a balloon on a piece of fabric creates static electricity. Scientists believe a bee’s charge helps pollen (花粉) stick to it and signals to other bees which flowers have already been visited. But until now, researchers had never recorded such a high voltage (电压) among swarming honeybees.
As far as electricity generation goes, a bee swarm’s charge isn’t so impressive: It would take about 50 billion bees to power an LED light. But compared to the charges produced by common weather events, the bees’ charge density was six times greater than an electrified (带电的) dust storm and eight times greater than a thunderstorm cloud.
Using the honeybee data, the researchers created a model to predict the potential atmospheric electric charge of other insects, including locusts (蝗虫), moths and butterflies. “Locusts swarm in biblical numbers.” says Liam O’Reilly, a co-author and biologist at the University of Bristol. Clouds of these insects can span up to 1,200 square kilometres and contain roughly 30 million locusts per square kilometer. The researchers predict locusts would have a much bigger influence on the atmosphere compared to honeybees.
Scientists hope to continue exploring how biology influences physics and are curious to know if something similar is happening with other wildlife, such as birds and bats.
32. What were the researchers doing when something unexpected on their instruments happened
A. Studying weather events. B. Testing their instruments.
C. Recording insects’ behavior. D. Looking for honeybees’ new home.
33. What’s a bee’s charge used for
A. Signaling to other bees. B. Helping the bee fly fast.
C. Finding pollen more easily. D. Avoiding losing their way.
34. What does the underlined word “biblical” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Limited. B. Full. C. Large. D. Slight.
35. What will the scientists continue to study next
A. The wide application of biology. B. Measures to protect birds and bats.
C. The influences of dust storms on wildlife. D. Whether other wildlife can produce electric charge.

From high up in his skinny apartment building, Peter could see the canal(运河) stretching(延伸) in all directions. Every Saturday, Peter watched for Grandpa riding toward the building on his bicycle. But today, Peter knew that his grandfather wouldn’t come. Peter would not hear the ring-ring of Grandpa’s bicycle bell. And there would be no Saturday afternoon picnic in the park. Last week, Grandpa had a knee operation. Now he needed a walking stick to provide assistance―and Peter didn’t know if Grandpa would ever ride his bike again. Sighing with worry, Peter was lost in thought. Would he ever again hear the ring-ring as Grandpa approached
That’s when Peter had an idea. He grabbed his birthday money―l0 euros―from the top dresser drawer. Then he hurried to tell Mum his plan. A few minutes later, Peter ran down the stairs of his building and burst into the afternoon sunshine. His bike was waiting for him. Peter wore his helmet and pedaled down the bumpy(颠簸的) road. Ring-ring sang his bicycle bell to alert (提示)walkers that he was coming. He pedaled past the hardware(五金) store in the corner. He pedaled past the window washer who whistled as he worked. And he pedaled two more blocks before arriving at the market. He loved the market’s sights and smells.
Peter’s euros clinked(叮当响) in his pocket as he walked through the market, examining each table. He stopped at a fruit stand, chose two shiny apples and paid two euros. Then he stopped at the cheese table and asked for half a pound of cheese, handing the waiter three euros. Peter placed the items in his bicycle basket and pedaled back toward home. Imagining his Grandpa walking toward him joyfully accompanied by the ring-ring sound, Peter whistled a merry tune(吹着欢快的口哨).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.开头已给出。
Paragraph 1:
Wearing a bright smile, he stopped halfway in front of the hardware store.
Paragraph 2:
But instead of heading for home, Peter pedaled (骑自行车)in a different direction.

第二节: One possible version:
Wearing a bright smile, he stopped halfway in front of the hardware store. He parked his bike, ran inside happily and took out his last five euros from his pocket carefully. It was just enough to buy what he needed. “Sir, I want a bell for my Grandpa's stick.” said Peter with his eyes shining and his face lightening up. “Here you are, Peter.” The owner of the shop gave him a delicate bell decorated with beautiful patterns. The moment he received the bell, he placed the new bag to his basket and travelled back on his bike.
But instead of heading for home, Peter pedaled in a different direction. Having pedaled for ten minutes, Peter arrived at a familiar building. He parked his bike, gathered his bag, and knocked on the door. A man with a walking stick opened it. On seeing Peter, Grandpa screamed, “Why are you here You know I can't bike to our picnic.” “I brought the picnic here,” said Peter. “And also, a gift.” Grandpa took the bag that Peter offered and opened it. Astonished at what he saw, Grandpa smiled with delight. Hugging his dear Peter, Grandpa couldn't help sobbing due to his grandson's act of kindness.

Text 10
W: Get ready to say goodbye to today’s warm, sunny weather. Just when millions of people are getting ready for the Christmas holiday, three storms are expected to make problems for holiday travelers. None of the storms will be strong, but the cold air will make traveling difficult. The first storm will arrive on this weekend. It will bring rain to the northeast, but warm air in New York City might cause some fog and low clouds. It will be hard for drivers to see the road clearly. Later in the week, snow will come to the northwest states, with three inches falling in Saint Paul, Minnesota. And a few days later, just when the New Year’s celebrations are scheduled, Boston will be covered with free zing rain. The ice will cause problems for anyone trying to travel on foot, with one inch of ice expected on city roads. New Year’s will be cold in Chicago, too, with a strong wind blowing water from the river onto anyone hoping to celebrate by the water.
