Best apps to learn how to play guitar
TrueFire
TrueFire is a video lesson platform with a lot of big-name teachers. Courses range from the introduction of whole types to deep-dives into specific theory concepts. For most courses, there’re multiple camera angles offering close-ups of the left and right hands. Because of this presenting style, however, things can get crowded on the mobile app—it’s definitely a platform that works better on a desktop.
Courses can be purchased individually, but this’ll be expensive if you’re planning on buying more than a couple. Grabbing an All Access subscription will instead give you unlimited streams of TrueFire’s entire list.
Price: Either per-course, or $ 29/month or $249/year
The Gibson App
Gibson’s new smartphone app is aimed at guitarists of all levels. Essentially, this is a system that responds to you as you play along to lessons and exercises, making the experience feel like an interactive lesson. What we especially like about the app is how players get a free one-on-one video guidance with a professional Gibson guitar tech.
Price: $ 14.99 a month or $ 89.99 a year
Yousician
Yousician is designed for both beginners and intermediate players. Suitable for guitar, bass and even ukulele, the app offers step-by-step video tutorials, plus the ability to provide instant feedback on your performance. The app is free to download but it does require a subscription for unlimited and uninterrupted playtime across all platforms.
Price: Free(subscription service offered starting at $19.99 per month)
BandLab
BandLab is the perfect DAW(Digital Audio Workstation) for cooperation. You can upload tracks to the cloud-based workstation to further your music with over 100 guitar and bass presets. Not in the mood to write Then discover and stream millions of tracks made by emerging and established artists to stimulate your creativity. It’s also totally free, with no paywalls or subscriptions.

Jim Savage was setting out for a day’s fishing off the Florida coast when he heard the cries of a baby dolphin in trouble. The three-month-old had got her tail caught in the ropes of an abandoned crab trap. Jim knew that if he left her, the dolphin would have little chance of survival. He cut her free and got in contact with the authorities. She was taken to Clear water Marine Aquarium, but her injuries were so severe that she lost her tail.
The aquarium staff named the baby dolphin Winter and she gradually learned how to swim again. Unfortunately, because of the way she was moving in the water without her tail, she was in danger of developing a problem with her spine (脊椎). Kevin Carroll and Dan Strzempka, who ran a company making artificial limbs, heard about the problem and had a brilliant idea. Kevin and Dan told the staff at the aquarium that they would make an artificial (人造的) tail for Winter!
There were a lot of challenges that Kevin and Dan had to deal with along the way, like trying to fit an artificial tail on a playful young dolphin that doesn’t want to stay still! It took over fifty prototypes (模型) and a year and a half before Winter finally got her new 30-inch tail. After seeing her swim with it for the first time, Kevin said that the months of hard work had been truly worth it.
Making the tail was only half the story, though. For Winter to be able to swim properly, the artificial tail needed to be held in place without damaging her skin. Specialists came up with a soft material that firmly holds the skin and doesn’t hurt. Designed especially for Winter, this material was so successful that “WintersGel” is now being used to make artificial limbs more comfortable for people with false arms and legs all around the world.
In 2011 the tale (故事) was made into a film, “Dolphin Tale”, starring Winter herself. It’s about a dolphin that would have died, but survived because a few people cared.
4. What do we know about Jim
A He worked at an aquarium. B. He freed a dolphin from a trap.
C. He injured a dolphin accidentally. D. He kept a baby dolphin for three months.
5. What did Kevin and Dan decide to do according to paragraph 2
A. Teach Winter to swim. B. Set up a branch company.
C. Help straighten Winter’s spine. D. Make a man-made tail for Winter.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Kevin and Dan’s work in paragraph 3
A. Dangerous. B. Imaginative. C. Interesting. D. Difficult.
7. What could be the best title for the text
A. A tale of a tail. B. A lesson from a dolphin.
C. An important survival skill. D. A chance encounter with a dolphin.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. A

ChatGPT a new chatbot model developed by US-based AI research laboratory OpenAI, has quickly become a hit globally due to its advanced conversational capabilities,
It can write emails, computer codes, even academic papers and poems, and has passed a number of tests within seconds. Academicians worldwide are discussing whether AI should be used in education. Some universities have banned it. The New York City’s Department of Education, for example, banned the chatbot from its public school devices and networks, with some people warning that it could encourage more students to cheat, especially in exams.
Many more welcome this app, claiming that, like most technological advances and groundbreaking innovations in history, ChatGPT is a powerful tool for the development of higher education.
Embracing AI as early as possible is advisable. Higher education institutions should make preparations for including AI in their syllabus (教学大纲). They can start by offering related courses, because by understanding how it works, they can make better use of it. Besides, students with good knowledge of AI are more competitive when it comes to getting a good job, as an increasing number of jobs are being done by computer programmes-some in cooperation with humans, AI-powered education technologies can be adopted to make the learning experience more suitable for each student based on his or her strengths and weaknesses. As for professors, AI can free them from doing some dull tasks so they can concentrate on teaching and interacting with students.
Since we cannot avoid ChatGPT and other AI-powered applications from entering the field of higher education, we should make collective efforts to ensure they have a positive impact on society and the future of education Despite AI helping make learning much more interesting and enjoyable, humans need to work very hard to win the race with technology.

Natural Disasters Require Special Building Design
Natural disasters happen everywhere in the world. Many cause property damage and loss of life. But researchers say the severity (严重性) of their effects can be reduced if people take steps to prepare.
A new exhibit teaches what governments and individuals can do to lessen the effects. Chrysanthe Broikos organized the exhibit at the National Building Museum. She says large buildings and other structures can survive strong earthquakes if they are built with some level of flexibility. In other words, they need to be able to bend and move as the earth shakes.
“We need to let buildings move and we can actually understand where they might fail, and then go in and design buildings with that in mind.”
One building design is called a “special moment frame”. It enables movement at points where large load-bearing supports join each other. Rubber-based foundation blocks let buildings move, while huge shock absorbers (缓冲器) help to limit the shaking.
The museum exhibit has a model of a wind wall. The model shows how some roofs or tops of buildings are more likely to be destroyed than others because of the strong winds of hurricanes. Chrysanthe Broikos says tests show that a reasonable angled roof is best able to withstand wind storms. In areas with powerful winds, researchers have strongly urged the creation of at least one “safe room”. This is a place where building occupants can spend the most dangerous part of the storm.
Another concern is how to deal with storms and flooding. Some coastal communities in the U.S. have made artificial reefs from oysters (牡蛎) shells instead of rocks. The builders use shells collected from restaurants to create the barriers. Chrysanthe Broikos also suggests setting aside land along the coast for parks instead of housing. She says this is more natural and keeps valuable property away from danger.
As for forest fires, researchers now suggest clearing an area about 60 meters wide around a single-family house.
“What that means is trying to keep that area free of material that easily burns.”
12. What does Chrysanthe Broikos think about the buildings that can survive strong earthquakes
A. They should be fixed enough. B. Their height needs to be reasonable.
C. Their location is the most important. D. They are mobile and bendable.
13. What does the underlined word “that” in the third paragraph refer
A. Lessening the effects. B. Where they might fail.
C. Designing buildings. D. Special moment frame.
14. Which of the following belongs to the measures to deal with storms and flooding
A. Don’t build houses along the coast.
B. Set aside land for parking cars.
C. Make artificial reefs from rocks.
D. Raise oysters in large number.
15. What is the passage mainly about
A. Different types of natural disasters.
B. Preparations for natural disasters.
C. Reactions to natural disasters.
D. Effects of natural disasters.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. B

【答案】范文
My favourite scientist is Marie Curie who was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize.
Together with Pierre, she made several important scientific discoveries: she discovered radium and polonium, and she developed the theory of radioactivity. They were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. After her husband’s death in 1906, she continued their work and discovered that radium could be used to treat illnesses. I think that is her greatest contribution to science. In 1911, Marie received her second Nobel Prize-this time in Chemistry. To this day, no one else has received two Nobel Prizes in different sciences. Marie Curie also did a lot for other people. She helped injured soldiers during the First World War. She also founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and in Warsaw, which are still major centres of medical research today.
The reason I admire Marie Curie is that she showed the world that women can make important contributions to science. I hope that one day I can become a scientist like her.

Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”
“No” said Dad. “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the caraway!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside.
“Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.

【答案】
After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. They believed that they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground. “Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum. “OK, Mum. If that’s what you think is best,” Mary replied uncertainly. So they went upstairs and waited. Downstairs, water started flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water.
Finally, the rain stopped. But Mary and her family couldn’t leave while the house was still flooded. They listened to the radio and learnt that rescue workers in boats were coming to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. They waited for a boat to arrive at their house. Their home had been badly damaged, but they were all happy to be alive. About half an hour later, the boat arrived and took Mary and her parents to a safe place.

ChatGPT, a new chatbot model developed by US-based AI research laboratory OpenAI, has quickly become a hit globally due to its advanced conversational capabilities,
It can write emails, computer codes, even academic papers and poems, and has passed a number of tests within seconds.
8. Why do some higher education institutions forbid ChatGPT
A. ChatGPT can write emails and computer codes quickly.
B. Some professors might not perform their duties properly.
C. Students would have conversations with each other via it.
D. Students might seek help from it in completing the exams.

Caught in a flood
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do
