Joe Horan, a physical education teacher, has started the program Building Men to create a positive vision of manhood not just for himself, but also for the boys he teaches. Looking back, Mr. Horan says his program developed from a low point in his life. In 2004 as he went through a hard time, he felt society’s definition of manhood was leading him down the wrong path. His life, he says, lacked substance and depth. “A desire became planted in my heart, that is, to find healing from the unhealthy messages I believed about manhood,” he says. Then, his sister recommended a book, Season of Life by Jeffrey Marx, which digs into the discovery of what being a man is all about. Joe took all the clues and started to put life lessons into his class.
Despite limited resources and funding, Building Men began at one middle school in the district in 2006. It grew on a shoestring budget, expanding school by school, year by year. Today, 33 teachers, like Mr. Colabufo, work across 18 schools. Mr Colabufo has known Mr. Horan for several years, noting many people are aware of the program’s success. “Joe’s a legend in this district,’’ Mr Colabufo says.
The program appeals to boys at first because of a basketball component, but its secret is how it dives into off-the-court issues through discussions on character. Building Men helps participants gain insight, work to restore self-worth, and learn to calm emotions. SIR is a central component of lessons, standing for significance, integrity, and relationships.
At a recent breakfast fundraiser, Shateek Nelson, a senior at Nottingham High School, shared his experience, having participated in Building Men since middle school. He said he learned to see the bigger picture, rather than living in the moment. He also came to realize his actions affect others, and now he factors that into his decisions.
4. What motivated Joe Horan to start the program Building Men
A. An instructional book. B. His personal experience.
C. His sister’s suggestion. D. The society’s expectation.
5. What does the underlined word “shoestring” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Flexible. B. Proper. C. Tight. D. Balanced.
6. What did Shateek Nelson learn from participating in BuildingMen
A. One should dream big and then start small.
B. One should live each day as if it were the last day.
C. It is good to gain real-life experience at middle school.
D. It is essential to think more of others in decision-making.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. SIR: Core Component of Physical Education
B. Healthy Life: Involving Substance and Depth
C. Building Men: Teaching Boys About Manhood
D. Manhood: Teenagers’ Power of Handling Issues

Researcher Ruijia Hu said wildlife habitat in crowded places like south went Ohio is becoming increasingly fragmented (分散) as forests give way to new construction. Eventually, this could make trouble to an animal with specific habitat needs like Ohio’s pileated (红冠) woodpecker.
Pileated woodpeckers have the nickname carpenter birds for their never-ending natural woodworking. They peck out holes in trees for their nests every year, creating lots of valuable homes for animals like fox squirrels and owls. “They make new nests every year. They won’t reuse old ones,” Hu said. “Other animals depend on them.”
Pileated woodpeckers are private birds that are more often heard than seen. Studying them can be especially difficult. So Hu turned to citizen science for help. To identify where woodpeckers have been seen she used eight years of sightings collected by birders and logged into the website eBird, a free online tool and app that anyone can use to record their observations and locations. She overlaid these sightings with remote sensing data and found that corridors along rivers and creeks with abundant mature trees and deadwood helped the birds adjust to their increasingly fragmented urban landscape.
“With fragmented forests, many habitats that were once suitable for wildlife are broken up,” Hu sa id. “Wildlife is unable to find habitat big enough to meet their survival needs. And even if there are suitable habitats, the distance between them can be too great. Wildlife corridors link up these habitat patches. Since wildlife can travel and migrate from one patch to another, the probability of finding food and shelter is higher.”
“There are so many species in urban areas that we don’t pay attention to, especially when they’re not considered vulnerable,” Hu said. “With development chipping away at more forest in this crowded county, the tipping point (临界点) could come quickly and unexpectedly. You can’t fix it overnight. It’s not just about planting more trees. The birds need mature forest, so it could take 30 to 50 years to replace their habitat. At least we can protect these riverside forest corridors and see that existing trees reach maturity.”
8. What can we infer from the second paragraph
A. The magpie’s nest is occupied by the dove.
B. Birds abandon the old for the new easily.
C. Friendship really exists among animals.
D. One’s trash is another treasure.
9. What is the main idea of the third paragraph
A. The effect of Hu’s study on birds.
B. The process of Hu’s research.
C. The difficulty Hu had in his study.
D. The application of technology.
10. What role do wildlife corridors play for birds
A. Helping them survive in the fragmented landscape.
B. Making them adjust to deadwood quickly.
C. Providing them with enough food for survival.
D. Ensuring them a stable and safe habitat.
11. What does Hu imply in the last paragraph
A. One tree doesn’t make a forest.
B. Be wise after the event.
C. Prepare for a rainy day.
D. Take things as they come.
D
Healthy human skin is covered with bacteria (细菌) that are quick to settle in an open wound. To prevent these organisms from spreading through the body, which can permanently injure or kill a person, the infected wound may need to be cleaned and treated with antibiotics. Medical professionals typically identify infections by unwrapping and observing a wound or by swabbing (用拭子擦拭) it and conducting a laboratory test. But removing a wound dressing can slow down the healing process. Plus, observations are subjective, while swab tests take time and require that a patient be physically present.
To address these issues, some research teams are developing devices that sit under bandages and continuously monitor indirect signs of infection, such as changes in wound temperature or acidity. And scientists at the National University of Singapore have now created an even more direct infection sensor.
This sensor can detect an enzyme (酶) called DNase. The enzyme acts as a reliable infection indicator because disease-causing bacteria produce it in large amounts inside wounds, whereas bacteria on healthy skin do not—so testing for the substance reduces the chance of a false positive result. Furthermore, DNase builds up before other infection signs appear. The new alert system, nicknamed the“wireless infection detection on wounds” (WINDOW) sensor, was detailed in Science Advances.
WINDOWs enzyme-sensing parts rely on a material called DNAgel. There searchers developed a particular kind of DNAgel that remains stable in watery environments, such as the human body, but begins to break down in the presence of DNase. They connected this gel (凝胶) to a chip that senses when the gel responds by sending a signal to a smartphone.
Thus far, the team has exposed the DNAgel to wound swabs from 18 people’s wounds to see how much the material degraded in the presence of the bacteria. There searchers also used the device on six living lab mice whose wounds were exposed to the same bacterial species, and it successfully detected infections.
12. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The harm of common wounds.
B. The treatment of infected wounds.
C. The intervention on wound healing.
D. The dilemma of infection observation.
13. How does the WINDOW sensor detect infections
A. By comparing wound acidity.
B. By detecting the DNase enzyme.
C. By measuring the bacteria amount.
D. By observing changes in wound color.
14. What can we expect of the WINDOW sensor in the future
A. It will cut down the length of infection-treating.
B. It could reduce the cost of infection observation.
C. It can monitor wounds continuously and remotely.
D. It might help conduct laboratory tests on wounds.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Innovations in Wound Infection Detection
B. Removing the Dangers of Open Wounds
C. Recognizing the Role of DNase in Healing
D. Challenges in Wound Care and Treatment

It was a beautiful sunny morning in early summer, when the world seemed full of sunlight and new green leaves. I was in a good mood as my parents had just given me $300 for my daily expenses during the week that they would be away in Mexico to visit my mother’s sick grandfather. I was extremely overjoyed, thinking hard about the things I could do with the money. If I survived on bread and butter the whole week, I would have an unexpected windfall of $ 200 to buy the latest Kobe Bryant basketball shoes! What a terrific idea!
As usual, the physical education class was thrilling. I felt most at case on the basketball court. After playing several fierce games, I could hardly catch my breath as I headed back towards the classroom, sweaty and exhausted. When I entered, I found my classmates gathered around Steven’s desk as he searched through his books and some other personal items anxiously. Steven had always been popular. Not only was he intelligent and well-mannered, but he also came from a well-off family. And he shared everything he had with us.
Right away, I learned Steven had lost the money he would donate to a children’s welfare institute that afternoon. Then I informed Miss Jones, the class teacher. She rushed over immediately and organized a search around the classroom. We stood by our desks and emptied the contents of our schoolbags onto the desk for inspection.
It was my turn. As Miss Jones took out the $ 300 from my wallet, the class fell into a shock. I didn’t know the amount lost was exactly $ 300 until then. I kept proving my innocence, but in vain. Miss Jones confiscated (没收) the $ 300 and decided I was getting kicked out of the school. I stayed home alone the whole week, living only on bread. I felt wronged, angry, and loss of self-esteem.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Finally, my parents returned home and talked with me.

To identify where woodpeckers have been seen, she used eight years of sightings collected by birders and logged into the website eBird, a free online tool and app that anyone can use to record their observations and locations.
D 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据第二段中“They peck out holes in trees for their nests every year, creating lots of valuable homes for animals like fox squirrels and owls. “They make new nests every year. They won’t reuse old ones,” Hu said. “Other animals depend on them.” (它们每年都在树上啄洞筑巢,为狐狸、松鼠和猫头鹰等动物创造了许多宝贵的家园。“它们每年都筑巢。他们不会重复使用旧的。”“其他动物依赖它们。”)”可知,红冠啄木鸟每年都在树上啄洞筑巢,但它们不会重复使用旧的,可以被其他动物利用,所以可推出D项“One’s trash is another treasure. (一个人的垃圾是另一个人财富)”。故选D项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Pileated woodpeckers are private birds that are more often heard than seen. Studying them can be especially difficult. So Hu turned to citizen science for help.
根据倒数第二段中“Wildlife is unable to find habitat big enough to meet their survival needs. And even if there are suitable habitats, the distance between them can be too great. Wildlife corridors link up these habitat patches. Since wildlife can travel and migrate from one patch to another, the probability of finding food and shelter is higher. (野生动物无法找到足够大的栖息地来满足它们的生存需求。即使有合适的栖息地,它们之间的距离也可能太大。野生动物走廊连接着这些栖息地。由于野生动物可以从一个地方迁徙到另一个地方,所以找到食物和住所的可能性更高)”可知,野生动物走廊帮助动物在支离破碎的环境中生存。故选A项。
根据最后一段““There are so many species in urban areas that we don’t pay attention to, especially when they’re not considered vulnerable,” Hu said. “With development chipping away at more forest in this crowded county, the tipping point could come quickly and unexpectedly. You can’t fix it overnight. It’s not just about planting more trees. The birds need mature forest, so it could take 30 to 50 years to replace their habitat. At least we can protect these riverside forest corridors and see that existing trees reach maturity.”

To address these issues some research teams are developing devices that sit under bandages and continuously monitor indirect signs of infection, such as changes in wound temperature or acidity.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Finally, my parents returned home and talked with me.

Miss Jones had just accepted my parents’ advice when Steven came.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, my parents returned home and talked with me. They patiently listened to my side of the story, their understanding and support helping to boost my hurt feelings and self-esteem. I told the whole story of what happened, including the expensive misunderstanding, and the relief of sharing my tough experience was clear in the room. It was during this emotional conversation that I heard about Steven’s admission, which would change the situation.
Miss Jones had just accepted my parents’ advice when Steven came. He genuinely looked sorry, with a hint of regret in his eyes. To everyone’s relief, he confessed that he had found the lost money in his backpack. The immense relief and joy I felt were hard to put into words, showing how misunderstandings and hasty judgments can lead to serious problems. Steven’s sincere apology and our collective understanding brought us closer as classmates, restoring the warmth of our friendship.
