At six o’clock sharp the curtain rises. Two hundred audience members, including the mayor of Reno, Nevada, look to the stage. Dozens of costumed actors break out into the drama—The Lion King. This is not a typical production. The cast is made up of homeless children living at the Volunteers of America family shelter in Reno. Children have been given a chance to live their dreams onstage, thanks to volunteer acting coach Nasya Mancini.
“I see so much of myself in these kids,” says Nasya. “I tell them their current circumstance doesn’t have to be their future. If they are determined they can do anything they want.” She was born prematurely, weighing 1.25 pounds, which was given little chance of survival. But Nasya kept fighting. She had open-heart operation at two weeks old. Doctors predicted she’d be in the hospital for five months. She came home in nine weeks. Her very name (pronounced “Nah-SY-ah”) means “magic” in Hebrew.
Nasya quickly proved a big talent for acting. At six she was spotted by an acting coach. Nasya once told her friends, “I’m going to be an actor. One day I’m going to be a star.” Some higher graders said, “You You’re a small fry. You’re not even pretty.” Later, one popular girl said, “I can play better than you. And if you’re not better than me, then how can you be an actor Give. It. Up.”
Later, she entered the Volunteers of America shelter center. She learned there were more than 300 people living there and many children were even mistreated and lost their confidence. Nasya was stunned. “I was so blessed that I didn’t realize how blessed I was!” she says. “I’m healthy, have wonderful parents, a great home. I couldn’t believe how many homeless children there were right in my own backyard.”
Long after Nasya won the title of Miss Northern Counties Outstanding Teen, she has stayed committed to the kids at the Volunteers of America shelter. At each class she reminds the kids, “Believe in yourself. The world is your stage.”

When it comes to cancer, red meat is often thought to be the bad guy. But new research from the University of Chicago has shown that a nutrient found in red meat may support our body’s ability to fight off cancer cells.
The nutrient in question is called TVA, which is a long-chain fatty acid (酸) that our bodies cannot make by themselves. “TVA in humans is mainly from foods, including beef and lamb,” said study author Jing Chen, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. In the new study, Chen’s team collected 255 bioactive substances from nutrients into a database and tested whether any of the substances could affect the immune (免疫的) system’s ability to fight cancer cells. Specifically, the team focused on their ability to activate a class of white blood cells called CD8+ T cells, also known as killer T cells, finding and destroying infected cells and, in this case, cancers.
After evaluating the top six substances in both human and mouse cells, the team found that TVA produced the best results. “TVA strengthens CD8+ T cell function and thus promotes T cell-based immune system response to battle cancerous growth,” Chen said. The team found that mice with a diet enriched with TVA saw significantly reduced cancerous growth. “Focusing on bioactivity of nutrients rather than individual food might be more important, and taking supplements (保健品) with enriched bioactive nutrients is likely more efficient than consuming foods containing these nutrients,” Chen said.
Chen thinks there may be other nutrients that can do the same. “There is early data showing that other fatty acids from plants signal through a similar receptor as TVA, so we believe there is a high possibility that nutrients from plants can do the same thing,” he said.
28. What might be the general opinion about red meat
A. It helps fight cancer. B. It brings health risks.
C. It is rich in fatty acids. D. It contains no nutrients.
29. How does TVA support the immune system
A. By producing nutrients. B. By killing infected cells.
C. By collecting substances. D. By activating killer T cells.
30. What does Chen most probably suggest readers do
A. Go vegetarian. B. Eat less red meat.
C. Prevent cancer actively. D. Take a TVA-enriched diet.

A. Science. B. Education. C. Sports. D. Entertainment.

根据前文“Firstly, you need to change your attitude to the way of the world.(首先,你需要改变你对世界的态度)”以及后文“Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you. Many people try to live by high standards, and as a result, are often disappointed and become angry. The answer is to be a bit more flexible and relax your control of life.(此外,你需要接受并不是每个人都有和你一样的标准。许多人试图以高标准生活,结果往往是失望和生气。答案是要灵活一点,放松对生活的控制)”可知,本段主要讲述了不要用太高的标准生活,不论是对他人还是自己,所以G项“Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoiding getting angry(意识到人无完人是避免生气的好开始)”符合本段主题。故选G项。
【34题详解】
根据前文“Secondly, don’t regard anger as a bad emotion. There are occasions when anger can be directed in such a way as to achieve great things. Martin Luther King was angry about the lack of civil rights in the USA. Gandhi was angry about British rule in India.(其次,不要把愤怒看作是一种不好的情绪。在某些情况下,愤怒可以被引导成一件伟大的事情。马丁·路德·金对美国缺乏公民权利感到愤怒。甘地对英国在印度的统治感到愤怒)”以及后文“They both used that anger to motivate themselves to fight against what they saw as injustice.(他们都用这种愤怒来激励自己与他们所认为的不公正作斗争)”可知,本段主要讲述了愤怒并不是一种不好的情绪在某些情况下,愤怒可以被引导成一件伟大的事情,所以C项“Anger of this type can be used to fuel action(这种类型的愤怒可以用来推动行动)”符合本段主题,承接上文,并引出下文。故选C项。
【35题详解】
根据前文“Thirdly, reacting angrily is a hard habit to break. But it is a habit, and habits can be broken. The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with a situation that usually angers. Anger is a negative reaction, but in this type of situation, there is no good in reacting by forming positive thoughts.(第三,愤怒是一个很难改掉习惯。但这是一种习惯,习惯是可以打破的。诀窍是在面对通常令人愤怒的情况时避免做出反应。愤怒是一种消极的反应,但在这种情况下,形成积极的想法是没有好处的)”可知,本段主要讲述了在面对通常令人愤怒的情况时避免做出反应,所以B项“You need to learn not to respond at all(你要学会完全不回应)”符合本段主题,承接上文。故选B项。
【36题详解】
根据后文“That control will come once you identify what is at the root of your anger. Make changes to your lifestyle and attitudes and you will find that you will turn angry much less often, if at all.(一旦你确定了你愤怒的根源,这种控制就会到来。改变一下你的生活方式和态度,你就会发现你生气的次数少多了)”可知,本段是对前文的总结,所以F项“In conclusion, you must recognize anger is something you can control(总之,你必须认识到愤怒是你可以控制的)”符合本段主题。故选F项。

I believe everyone has a particular childhood birthday that stands out more than any other. For me, it was the year my father’s factory closed down, casting a shadow of uncertainty over our family. I was only a child. Looking back, I cannot recall the exact year, but the events of that birthday will live forever in my heart.
Dad, who had devoted years to the factory, never let on to me that we were having financial difficulties. I knew only that Dad usually worked long hours but was now home more than I had ever remembered. Mom, a homemaker, sought work in the local clothing factories, but jobs were rare. Time after time, she was told no openings were available. With Dad’s poor unemployment check as our only income, my parents carried the weight of our situation. They made every effort to hide the difficult reality from me.
As a carefree child, my mind was filled with excitement and eagerness for my upcoming birthday. What would my birthday gift be What surprise was waiting for me These questions crowded my mind, and I had no idea that my parents were worried about having no extra money to buy me a gift.
One day, when Mom was cleaning the house, she found some of my old clothes. Her eyes shone as she carefully examined each piece. “I know what to do!” she cried, her voice filled with excitement.
The days leading up to my birthday seemed to be no different from usual. But every night after I went to bed, Dad and Mom would be busy at the sewing (缝纫) machine for a long time. Dad designed, and Mom cut and sewed. They poured all their love and creativity into what they were doing, working hard to transform those old clothes into something special.
My birthday finally arrived. After a simple meal together, the moment came to open my parents’ gift. As I unwrapped it, my heart sank. Inside was a dress that looked very familiar, and I realized with a pang of sadness that it was a hand-made present using some of my old clothes. Disappointment washed over me, for I had no idea about the financial difficulty our family was facing. Overwhelmed with emotions, I swiftly closed the door to my room and let my tears flow freely. In the midst of my sorrow, I noticed a card nestled in the gift box, as if waiting to be discovered.

Nasya once told her friends “I’m going to be an actor.

31. In which section of a newspaper may this passage appear
A. Science. B. Education. C. Sports. D. Entertainment.
