When Antonio Gwynn Jr. saw the rubbish from a parade (巡游) in his hometown of Buffalo New York, he picked up a broom, bought some trash bags and started cleaning the streets by himself.
Gwynn is an 18-year-old high school senior. He started at 2 a.m. on Monday and didn’t stop cleaning for the next 10 hours. He told CNN that he “knew people needed to use that street to get to work in the morning.”
When word spread of how Gwynn single-handedly took action, his community responded. Matt Block saw Gwynn’s story on the news and decided to give him his 2004 red Mustang convertible (敞篷汽车). Block, 27, said the car is one he wanted since he was a child, but these days he is only using it occasionally. He saw Gwynn ask for some car buying advice on Facebook, and Matt decided to offer up his sports car.
It turns out that gift has more meaning than Block ever imagined. Gwynn’s mother, who passed away last year, also drove a red Mustang. When he realized the coincidence, Gwynn says that he was so shocked he “didn’t have any words.”
After high school, Gwynn had planned to go to trade school while saving up to go to college. Upon hearing Gwynn’s story, Medaille College in Buffalo offered him a full scholarship where he plans to study business starting this fall. One of his many goals is to open a cleaning business.
This is the first time Gwynn received this type of recognition for his good deeds, but this is not the first time he stepped up to help others. He is a member of Kappa Phi where he enjoys doing community service, and he helps out at churches.

Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends — 532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms (平台).
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger, “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual words, we will have little time for our real-world friendships.” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.
13. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To summarize the text. B. To tell about true friends.
C. To bring up a discussion. D. To encourage online friendship.
14. What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in Paragraph 3
A. In person. B. In advance. C. In any case. D. In full measure.
15. What is Katie’s attitude towards online communication
A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Confused. D. Unconcerned.
16. What view does Rosen hold
A. It’s wise to turn to friends online.
B. It’s easier to develop friendships in reality.
C. Social media help people stay closely connected.
D. Teenagers need focus on real-world friendships.
D
“There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its launch (投放市场) in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded (下载) the app, which gamified education and attracted many language learners.
The growth of technology for educational use has changed the way in which people learn and receive education. This is particularly true for languages, an area in which the explosion of mobile apps and interactive software has provided choices to a range of people who were previously unable to receive foreign language education.
Von Ahn says that when he founded DuoLingo he decided to find a way for people to learn a language for free. Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.
One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.
Von Ahn says an unexpected result of DuoLingo being an app is that it’s attracting an unlikely type of user. DuoLingo was designed (设计) to be like a game, and what the company has found is that many users aren’t even necessarily diehard language fans, they’re just looking for an educational way to kill some time.
“They’re still procrastinating from something else, but at least it’s somewhat useful.” says Von Ahn, “The truth of the matter is that learning a language takes months or years. We have to find a way to keep them interested and that’s where the gamification came in.”
17. What can we say about DuoLingo after its launch
A. It is used by entire US schools. B. It costs 30 dollars to download.
C. It changes the use of languages. D. It makes education more enjoyable.
18. Why does the author mention Von Ahn in paragraph 3
A. To show his poverty in childhood.
B. To explain why he founded the app.
C. To prove he was interested in the app.
D. To find out how he designed the app.
19. What change does DuoLingo bring to language learners
A. They can master a language faster. B. They become language fans totally.
C. They can learn in a low-cost way. D. They can now use it to kill some time.
20. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Reasons for Learning a Language
B. How to Learn a Language Online
C. The Development of a Language App
D. Mastering a Language with DuoLingo

This is the first time Gwynn received this type of recognition for his good deeds, but this is not the first time he stepped up to help others. He is a member of Kappa Phi where he enjoys doing community service, and he helps out at churches.
Gwynn is thankful for the community response, saying, “I appreciate everything everyone is doing for me.”
9. Why did Gwynn clean the street
A. He dropped a lot of rubbish there. B. He liked to help people.

A It’s wise to turn to friends online.
B. It’s easier to develop friendships in reality.
C. Social media help people stay closely connected.
D. Teenagers need focus on real-world friendships.
【答案】13. C 14. A 15. B 16.

Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.
【答案】17. D 18. B 19. C 20. D

【19题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.(科技带来的一大变化是语言学习者的变化。长期以来,语言一直与富人联系在一起,但现在,来自较不富裕背景的人正在找到负担得起的学习方式。)”可知,来自较不富裕背景的人正在找到负担得起的学习方式,DuoLingo 恰恰提供了这种方式。由此可推知,学习者可以以低成本的方式学习。故选C。
【20题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一句话““There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app.(免费语言学习应用程序的创始人路易斯·冯·安表示:“通过DuoLingo积极学习一门语言的人比整个美国公立学校系统都多。”)”可知,本文主要讲述了路易斯·冯·安创造了DuoLingo 来帮助人么学习英语。因此,“用DuoLingo 掌握一门语言”适合作本文的标题。故选D。
