Professor Bilveer Singh marks hundreds of papers each year. In every group, he says, there are always a few that are less than original. Nowadays, the suspect source is usually the Internet. “I’ve caught students quoting paragraph after paragraph,” says Singh. “But they are getting smarter.” Hence the rise of “A and A” or “alteration and amendment”: cutting a sentence here, pasting a phrase there, all the while using the on-screen terms to replace complicated words with age-appropriate ones.
For all its benefits, the rise of technology in the classroom has made it far easier for students to cheat—and get away with it. In the pre-wired days, plagiarism meant carefully copying paragraphs out of the books; today, kids can simply find the text, copy and paste—a much simpler and neater process. The practice is becoming popular around the globe. According to a survey by the Josephson Institute for Ethics, 74% of US high school students cheated in 2002. (“And those are just the ones admitting it,” says the Institute’s Terry Harrison.)
Fortunately, the same technology that makes it so easy for students to cheat is aiding teachers in catching them. The most popular anti-plagiarism service compares a student’s term paper with everything on the Internet, as well as to its own database of papers. (Of course, as many teachers know, Google, another well-known search engine company, works pretty well, too.) It has users in 51 countries; in Britain, nearly all 700 public universities have signed up for the service.
Educators are trying to upgrade their in-class measures as well. Experts say teachers should make it more difficult for students to “cut and paste” by changing the assignment every year and requiring more analysis than description. And teachers shouldn’t assume that kids even know what plagiarism is, as many just aren’t taught how to source or reference properly. But even when they know better, kids might do the same under the heavy academic pressure and time limits they face. Critics blame parents and educators for emphasizing results over academic honesty.
4. The “A and A” phenomenon mentioned in paragraph 1 summarizes __________.
A. the progress of the digital age B. the new features of cheating in schools
C. the rise of computer technology D. the application of the Internet
5. The underlined expression “the pre-wired days” in paragraph 2 refers to the time before__________.
A. electricity was used B. the wire was invented
C. the computer was widely used D. the radio and television came into being
6. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A. The rise of computer technology makes it easier for students to cheat.
B. Teachers are trying to find new measures to combat cheating in schools.
C. Computer technology can be used to detect cheating by students.
D. Teachers are praised for their emphasis on students’ academic results.
7. The last two paragraphs are mainly concerned with__________.
A. some measures to fight against plagiarism B. the importance of academic honesty
C. some well-known search engine companies D. experts’ suggestions on anti-plagiarism
B 5. C 6. D 7. A
根据第一段“Professor Bilveer Singh marks hundreds of papers each year.
根据第二段“For all its benefits, the rise of technology in the classroom has made it far easier for students to cheat—and get away with it. In the pre-wired days, plagiarism meant carefully copying paragraphs out of the books; today, kids can simply find the text, copy and paste—a much simpler and neater process. (尽管技术在课堂上的兴起带来了种种好处,但它让学生更容易作弊并逍遥法外。在有线电视时代,抄袭意味着仔细地从书中抄袭段落;如今,孩子们可以简单地找到文本、复制和粘贴,这是一个更简单、更整洁的过程。)”可知,pre-wired days是指在现代新的互联网技术出现之前的时候。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Critics blame parents and educators for emphasizing results over academic honesty. (批评者指责家长和教育工作者强调成绩而非学术诚信。)”可知,家长和教育工作者强调成绩会受到批评,并非表扬,所以D项表达错误。故选D。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Fortunately, the same technology that makes it so easy for students to cheat is aiding teachers in catching them. (幸运的是,让学生如此容易作弊的技术也帮助老师抓住了他们。最受欢迎的反剽窃服务将学生的学期论文与互联网上的所有内容以及自己的论文数据库进行比较。(当然,正如许多老师所知,谷歌,另一家知名的搜索引擎公司,也运行得很好。)它的用户遍布51个国家;在英国,几乎所有700所公立大学都报名参加了这项服务。)”和最后一段“Educators are trying to upgrade their in-class measures as well. Experts say teachers should make it more difficult for students to “cut and paste” by changing the assignment every year and requiring more analysis than description. And teachers shouldn't assume that kids even know what plagiarism is, as many just aren’t taught how to source or reference properly. But even when they know better, kids might do the same under the heavy academic pressure and time limits they face. Critics blame parents and educators for emphasizing results over academic honesty. 故选A。

When I was trying to find a place where to spend my December holidays, I met by chance some cheap flights to Iceland. After checking just a few winter pictures of Iceland, I realized that the country, known as the land of fire and ice, during the cold months of the year could offer me experiences I had never had before.
For sure you can’t miss the chance to go to Iceland in winter if your traveling wish list includes at least one of the crazy experiences Iceland can offer. Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean is a paradise ( 乐 园 ) for all those who want to see the northern lights, experience cold weather conditions and put themselves in geothermal ( 地 热 的 ) baths while the snow is falling on their head.
The best way to move around Iceland is with a rental car. Distances are huge and public transport in winter is not really common out of the major towns. As we wanted to be even more convenient we decided to rent a small camper ( 野 营 车 ). Sleeping and cooking in a camper saved us a lot of driving, money and gave us the chance to be always in the right place at the right time.
There were also no locals and in many cases no tourist facilities (设备). For us, as we slept in a camper, it was easier. But for tourists traveling by normal cars it is necessary to check the opening times of hotels and restaurants as many of them run just from June to September.
It is amazing to experience how the weather is changing in Iceland. However, Icelanders prefer to stay inside their houses. They have even no time to complain about the weather in December. All they care about is Christmas. They love to decorate their houses, sing Christmas songs and eat typical Christmas food.
8. Why is Iceland famous as the land of fire and ice
A. Because tourists would like to play with fire on the ice.
B. Because it is too dry to easily cause fire to happen.
C. Because it is hot inside a house and cold outside.
D. Because there exist hot springs and freezing ice.
9. What did the author think of the rented camper
A. It was not only practical but also economical.
B. It was convenient but cost them more money.
C. It provided the best chance to see the new country.
D. It was much faster than other public transport.
10. What does the last paragraph imply
A. The Icelanders prefer to live with their family.
B. The joy of Christmas drives the freezing weather away.
C. December is the coldest month of the year.
D. The Icelanders are always positive and stay outside.
11. What does this passage most probably come from
A. A textbook B. A scientific report
C. A travel magazine D. A news report
D 9. A 10. B 11. C

根据第一段第一句“When I was trying to find a place where to spend my December holidays, I met by chance some cheap flights to Iceland.”(当我试图找到一个地方度过我的12月假期,我偶然遇到一些便宜的去冰岛的航班。)和第二句“After checking just a few winter pictures of Iceland, I realized that the country, known as the land of fire and ice, during the cold months of the year could offer me experiences I had never had before.”(看了几张冰岛冬季的照片后,我意识到,这个被称为 “火与冰之国”的国家,在一年中最寒冷的几个月里,可以给我带来以前从未有过的体验。)
D
In the past few decades, there has been a sharp increase in the number of people studying abroad. Although studying abroad can bring great benefits, I still take the view that the disadvantages for young people are greater.
To begin with, many students who study abroad face great economic pressure. That means studying abroad is just not possible for everyone. We should not ignore the fact that there are still many families who live from hand to mouth. Tuition fees and living expenses are much more expensive than at home and could end up costing most families an arm and a leg. Studying in China is much more convenient and can help save much money.
Another important factor which should be taken into consideration is the great pressure that comes with studying abroad. Students must learn how to live in an unfamiliar environment with limited language skills. Some may struggle and suffer from culture shock when learning how to behave in new surroundings. Being too young to live independently, other students are not mature enough to handle the challenges by themselves and may become depressed. Some students might even encounter problems with personal safety mainly in America where racism prevails(盛行). In addition, different approaches to teaching and learning may come as a shock to many students.
A final point to consider is that while studying abroad does have potential benefits, young people who study in China also have a great future to look forward to. As China has boomed, the educational environment has improved obviously, with many great universities now available. They have great facilities and outstanding professors, helping to educate young people who will contribute to the economy and further strengthen our country. Most importantly, it has been widely recognized that China has become the safest country in the world to resist COVID-2019.
To sum up, one cannot deny the fact that studying abroad has its unavoidable disadvantages, so when you think about studying abroad, you should consider these many real factors.
12. What’s the author’s attitude towards studying abroad on the whole
A. He or She doesn’t care. B. He or She is for it.
C. He or She is against it. D. We can’t judge his or her attitude.
13. What does the underlined phrase probably mean according to paragraph 2 (原创)
A. Live a happy life. B. Live a sad life.
C. Live a poor life. D. Live a busy life.
14. Which sentence of the following is not true according to paragraph 3
A. All students will suffer from culture shock when they are in new surroundings.
B. Some students may become depressed when they’re too young to handle challenges.
C. There exists racism in America
D. Foreign approaches to teaching and learning may come as a shock to many students.
15. What is the main idea of the last but one paragraph
A. Studying in China is also a good choice now.
B. Studying in China is the impossible choice.
C. China should have many great universities.
D. Students should contribute to economy.
C 13. C 14. A 15. A

根据下文“Tuition fees and living expenses are much more expensive than at home and could end up costing most families an arm and a leg.(学费和生活费比在国内要贵得多,最终可能会使大多数家庭损失惨重)”可知,在国外念书的花销有时会给一些家庭带来惨重的损失。
根据第三段的“Some may struggle and suffer from culture shock when learning how to behave in new surroundings.(有些人在学习如何在新环境中表现时可能会遇到文化冲击。)” 而A项:All students will suffer from culture shock when they are in new surroundings.
故选A。
根据倒数第二段的主要内容,尤其第一句“A final point to consider is that while studying abroad does have potential benefits, young people who study in China also have a great future to look forward to.(最后一点要考虑的是,虽然出国留学确实有潜在的好处,但在中国学习的年轻人也有很好的未来 )”和最后一句“Most importantly, it has been widely recognized that China has become the safest country in the world to resist COVID-2019.(最重要的是,人们普遍认识到,中国已成为世界上抵抗2019年新冠病毒最安全的国家)”可知,本段主要陈述目前在国内念书是一个不错的选择。故选A。

Three more words to go. n-i-c-e-l-y. q-u-i-c-k-l-y. h-o-n-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled “honesty”, not “honestly”! She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
“I’ll correct and grade these test papers at the break”, said Lisa. Alice hurried into the classroom. She sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then Lisa walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat.
“Congratulations, Alice! You did it!” she announced. The whole class burst into applause! Lisa presented Alice with her prize. Alice grinned(咧嘴笑) as she read the label on the box: To Alice Carter, for her perfect first -quarter score in spelling.
“Is everything OK ” Mom asked as Alice burst through the front door after school. “Everything is perfect!” Alice shouted, showing Mom her spelling test paper and prize. Mom hugged her. “Put the test on the fridge so Dad can see it when he get home. And Casper, too. ” Alice scooped (抱起) up her cat. “Casper, can you spell nicely, quickly and honestly ” Alice’s heart missed a beat suddenly. “Honestly ” H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
“Alice, what’s the matter ” said Mom. “I don’t feel so good,” Alice said, putting Casper down and stuffing the test paper into her backpack. “Probably too much excitement.” Mom rubbed her back. “How about some tea ” Alice swallowed, “How did you know A “t” is exactly what I needed.

A. electricity was used B. the wire was invented

A. The rise of computer technology makes it easier for students to cheat.
B Teachers are trying to find new measures to combat cheating in schools.

D Because there exist hot springs and freezing ice.
9. What did the author think of the rented camper
A. It was not only practical but also economical.
B. It was convenient but cost them more money.
C It provided the best chance to see the new country.

An Honest Mistake
Alice double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she’d win her class’s First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool stuff. Plus, Lisa had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
