The temperature was rising to 90 degrees on Tuesday in the hills of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area, when Lexie Daniel and her friends saw a heroic act of kindness to save a dog’s life.
Lexie and her fellow hikers met a man whose dog was seriously overheated. Even though they donated (捐赠) their water, they were afraid it wouldn’t be enough to save the pup, after seeing how much the dog was already struggling.
“The owner brought along a huge jug, but no water seemed to be helping,” Lexie told GNN.
Too tired to carry the dog himself, the loving owner called the park rangers as soon as possible. Supervisory Park Ranger Kris Salapek soon found them on the trail (追踪). Kris then lifted the huge dog onto his shoulders and carried him down the mountain. “It was a long distance-a couple miles down a difficult rocky path,” says Lexie.
When they reached the stream, Kris laid him in the water as he knelt beside him and poured water on him. The ranger then picked him back up over his shoulders and walked all the way back down to the street for about an hour.
Lexie’s cousin Tori Matyola said, “The owner hiked down ahead of the ranger so that once he got down the mountain he had the car ready to take him straight to the vet. The dog was looking a little better by the time he got to the car and picking up his head.”
When she got home, Lexie, a pediatric (小儿科的) nurse from Hackettstown, New Jersey, posted the good deed on Facebook and it went viral with 35,000 people sharing the post and showing admiration for the ranger.
“This is a HERO,” Lexie wrote. “We are so lucky to have rangers like this who put animals before themselves. This ranger deserves recognition and a standing ovation (列队鼓掌) for his bravery, selflessness, and strength.”
4. What were Lexie and her fellow hikers worried about

As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and French, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000-7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars (学者) from a number of organizations—UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have for many years been documenting (记录) dying languages and the cultures they reflect. Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Centre Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following that tradition. His recently published a book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, which grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not satisfied to simply record these voices before they disappear without record. At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials, including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes, which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection. Now, through the two organizations that he has founded, the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project, Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, for the world available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

The International Space Station was a small three-room “apartment” when the first crew (工作人员) moved in. Twenty years later, the complex has a lookout tower, three toilets, six sleeping places and 12 rooms.
The first crew-American Bill Shepherd and Russian Sergei Krikalev and Yun Gidzenko-took off from Kazakhstan on October 31st, 2000. Two days later, they swung open the space station doors, clasping their hands in unity.
Shepherd, who served as the station commander (指挥官), compared it to living on a ship at sea. The three spent most of their time operating the equipment. Conditions were primitive, compared with now. Installations (安装) and repairs took hours at the new space station, compared with minutes on the ground. “Each day seemed to have its own set of challenges,” Shepherd recalled.
The space station has transformed into a complex that’s almost as long as a football field with 13 kilometers of electrical wiring, an acre of solar panels and three high-tech labs.
The space station marked two decades of a steady stream of people living there. While men still lead the pack, more crews include women. Two U. S. women have served as the space stations top manders typically are American or Russian, but have also come from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan. While African-Americans have made short visits to the space station, the first Black resident is expected to arrive.
“Many tasks like human Mars trips can benefit from the past two decades of international experience and cooperation,” Shepherd said. “If you look at the space station program today, it’s a scheme for how to do it. All those questions about how this should be organized and what it’s going to look like are already behind us.”
12. What can we learn about the International Space Station
A. It began as a Russian effort. B. It is under constant construction.
C. It was set up on October 31st, 2000. D. It can accommodate 12 people in all.
13. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “primitive” in Paragraph 3
A. Complex. B. Steady. C. Special. D. Rough.
14. What is the key message of the last but one paragraph
A. The leadership in the space station. B. The background of crew members.
C. The challenges faced by astronauts. D. The teamwork between space visitors.
15. What does Shepherd intend to tell us in the last paragraph
A. The space exploration has a long way to go.
B. The space station needs to be further improved.
C. The space station program has got big achievements.
D. The space station is the result of international cooperation.
