Live with roommates Have friends and family around you Chances are that if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.
I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.
Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.
Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn’t need. Since I had my own toiletries(洗漱用品), I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.
As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged.
So here is my advice: Lead by action.

Osa is an athletic yet stubborn 62-pound German shepherd. The six-year-old dog has mastered the art of sniffing(嗅,闻) out cancer and is key to a research project that has the potential to change oncology(肿瘤学).
Osa is part of an ambitious effort launched five years ago at the University of Pennsylvania that aims to develop one of the most powerful scent-detection(气味探测) machines in the world: the canine nose. She is able to distinguish between blood samples (样本) taken from cancer patients and healthy people simply by sniffing them.
In fact, Osa is one of five cancer-detection dogs trained by Annemarie DeAngelo and her workmates at the university’s Penn Vet Working Dog Centre. The most important goal is to develop an “electronic sniffer” that can have similar cancer-sniffing superpowers of Osa and her pals. Osa arrived at the Penn Vet Working Dog Centre from a breeder at two months of age. Ever since, she has taken training. The process is demanding, challenging and repeated until the dog has mastered the most basic task of all. Finally, she has succeeded in sniffing out cancer. To change Osa’s outstanding abilities into an electronic nose, researchers use a similar way to train the machine.
An electronic nose prototype(原型,模型) has been built, and it’s successful in sniffing out cancer 90 to 95 percent of the time. That team has also correctly detected different types of cancer, and is building a cancer-detecting device for the National Institutes of Health. One aim is to be able to distinguish between early-stage and late-stage cancer. “It would be amazing to identify people at an early stage and really have an effect on saving lives,” says a researcher. “The dogs have been able to detect that. With that ability, a blood test could be sent to a central lab, or ideally performed in a doctor’s office, making some hidden cancers a thing of the past. We expect that the cancer-sniffer device will be completed soon.
8.What can we learn about Osa from the first two paragraphs
A. She uses nose to detect the presence of cancer.
B. She can change the course of the oncology.
C. She was too stubborn to join the research.
D. She used to be an athletic German shepherd.
9.Which of the following best describes the training according to Paragraph 3
A. Purposeful. B. Boring. C. Strict. D. Endless.
10.What can we infer from the researcher’s words
A. Distinguishing cancers is important in early experiments.
B. Blood tests will be more difficult in the future.
C. There will be more dogs tested for detecting cancer.
D. The hidden cancers may be detected by an electronic nose soon.
11.What is the text mainly about
A. The result of a study on dogs’ life. B. The role of dogs in detecting cancers.
C. The importance of having a blood test. D. The ways to distinguish cancers.
Growing up as kids we are told to share our toys and not to be selfish. We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But when does it all become too much With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a carpet as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media
“Oversharing” has become associated with social media, but it isn't exclusive to this platform. Imagine you head to a party and meet x k w someone. Within five minutes they have revealed private details about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage advisor Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to connect with someone. But how does this translate to social media
Dr. Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学),says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy we express when things go wrong. It seems that searching for sympathy by oversharing is generally considered as negative rather than the cry for help it could really be.
However, Dr. Hand's research also seems to suggest that the more we post on a platform, the more socially attractive we become-provided that the posts that we bang out are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD said that we should avoid complaining and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense-if your date is going “that well", would you really have time to share a photo with text
So, how can you know if you are oversharing Well, why not ask your friends in real life. They would probably be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much.
12.What does the underlined word “exclusive" in paragraph 2 mean
A. Unique. B. Similar. C. Relevant. D. Fundamental.
13.Why do some people prefer oversharing at parties
A. To draw others' attention.
B. To satisfy others' curiosity.
C. To remove negative feelings.
D. To develop good relationships.
14.Which of the following may Dr. Hand agree with
A. Sharing more details online can attract more sympathy.
B. Oversharing negative experiences is equal to crying for help.
C. Sharing negative posts can't help one become socially attractive.
D. Oversharing isn’t likely to happen online when thing go wrong.
15.According to the text, what should be avoided for online sharing
A. Reflecting on past bad manners.
B. Showing a great many expensive goods.
C. Writing a recipe for a balanced breakfast.
D. Recording unforgettable moments with friends.
二、七选五
16.We all have projects that need to be finished. ①_______
Believe it or not, the location in which you plan your project plays an important role. That’s why I urge you to sit down and make this plan in a location where you can focus. ②_______If you for some reason cannot, there are other locations available such as the library, your work office and so on.
Do you know well about the actual purpose of the project It’s not uncommon that people forget to outline the exact purpose of the project in explicit terms.
③_______If the purpose isn’t well explained, it could lead to some confusions in the future as well as loss of time and money. Make sure you get it right in the beginning!
④_______ You may choose one of the two ways to start your project plan, either building everything from the bottom up or starting from the top and going down. The former case is usually the more difficult way to start; it would require you to know all the details of the project before you start the plan. The latter is usually the better way to start. ⑤_______ Once you’ve done this, you can look at each individual entry and try to specify the details concerning it.
A. Where do you start
B. Now let’s talk about how to carry out your project plan.
C. It will help you start with a general overview of the project.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹)that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realised she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a box of chocolates out of a drawer and gave him one.
The mother said, ”This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!“

Now with some chocolates in his hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared.

Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand. ”This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase. “She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possession. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, and had to duck his head even lower.
