It was February 20, 2008. Down the escalator (自动扶梯) at the airport in Atlanta, I looked back to ensure my wheeled suitcase was secure on its own moving step. Only then did I notice the man traveling behind it, who wore a square-patterned cotton shirt. The design was strikingly beautiful. “Did you purchase your shirt in Africa ” I asked. “Yes,” he replied. “I am from Ethiopia.”
We both got off the escalator and waited to board the train to the hall for our respective flights. I have traveled to Africa but never to Ethiopia. Yet, the name of the country jogged my memory. I thought of two phrases from my general fund of information: Addis Ababa and Haile Selassie. By this time, we had boarded the train and continued our conversation.
“Isn’t Addis Ababa the capital of your country ” I inquired. “That’s right. If you like to travel, now would be a good time to visit. We are celebrating our bicentennial (二百周年),” he added with pride. I remembered the bicentennial in the United States in 1976, so I could relate to his feelings. “We are also celebrating the beginning of the second millennium (千禧年),” he added. This statement perplexed me. I remembered the festivities in 2000. Hadn’t those been for the millennium
“Is Ethiopia in the northwest of Africa ” I asked hesitantly. “No, in the middle of Africa near the east coast.” he explained gently. I would have liked to have learned more about his country. However, we had to part. He was taking a flight west; I was flying east. It was a brief encounter: a few facts and new information. It has inspired me to brush up my knowledge of different countries on earth. Once I learn where each African country is again, I plan to continue with the map of central Asia and get my “stans” straight: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The ability to use the left hand is referred to as left-handedness. Left-handedness is actually more common in the male population than in females. There is an amount of untrue information about them.
It is difficult for left-handed children to learn writing of the alphabet, without personal guidance. Not true at all. Take the left-handed kids for example. Everyone else is more bothered about his left-handedness than he himself is. The left-handed child adapts to writing, drawing and all other activities that require him to hold a writing tool as early as the right-handed. In fact, many left-handed people display neater handwriting than their right-handed partners.
Left-handed people have a lesser chance of surviving a hand-to-hand fight. This is anything but true. History has witnessed the advantage left-handedness had during hand-to-hand fights and even within the boxing ring. In fact, a common sight is that the left-handed fighter is able to attack their opponents by surprise on the open, unprotected right side.
Left-handed people are many a time at the disadvantage of using tools designed for the right-handed. Well, this is true, but today, there is a whole range of tools and equipment being designed for left-handed people. Many right-handed tools too are available, such that they can be changed to suit the needs of the left-handed craftsman (工匠). Even the computer mouse has been changed in use and the touch pad provides a left-handed professional equal opportunity.
Research shows that left-handed people are in fact high achievers. This is because their brains are structured to widen their abilities. A number of mathematical, artistic and sporting masters were and are left-handed. However, most left-handed people over the world, might have, at some stage in their life, been on the receiving end of an uncomplimentary (贬损的) remark or comment regarding their choice of hand. I am sure this list and discussion above would be reasonable enough to be proud of being left-handed.
8.In comparison with right-handed children, what can we learn about left-handed ones
A. Left-handed children find it hard to learn writing.
B. Left-handed children are tired of the left-handedness.
C. Left-handed children are used to writing tools too late.
D. Plenty of left-handed children can write more beautifully.
9.What advantage do left-handed people have in hand-to-hand fights
A. They could start a surprise attack with their left hands.
B. They could attack their partners’ left sides surprisingly.
C. They have a better chance to beat their partners in history.
D. They are good at fighting especially within the boxing ring.
10.What is the computer mouse mentioned to show us
A. Left-handed people are in fact high achievers.
B. Left-handed people have many disadvantages.
C. Many tools are designed for the left-handed people.
D. Many left-handed people receive bad remarks daily.
11.What does the text mainly talk about
A. History of left-handed people. B. Advantages of left-handed people.
C. False facts about left-handed people. D. Discussion about left-handed people.
When your alarm clock rings and you drag yourself out of bed, you probably wonder: Why on earth does school have to start so early
Fortunately, there is a new law to back you up — or better still, science.
A law in California, passed on Oct 13, requires that public middle schools begin classes no earlier than 8:00 am and that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 am. The law will go into effect by November 1, 2022.
Starting school at 8:00 or 8:30 in the morning may not sound like too big of a change, but it could mean one more hour of sleep for students who used to start school at 7:30 or even earlier.
“The effect of that one hour is something they will be feeling as 40-year-old adults,” Sumit Bhargava, a sleep expert at Stanford University, told The New York Times. He said that not having enough sleep can affect students’ mental health and increase the risk of being overweight and diabetes (糖尿病).
In the short run, students’ school performances should improve almost immediately. Kyla Wahlstrom, a researcher at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education, found that students who have enough sleep are alert in class and get much more satisfying grades.
Some might say that asking students to go to bed earlier could have been a much easier solution than changing the school timetable across an entire state. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty (青春期), which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11:00 pm. So when school starts at 8:00 or earlier, they can hardly get the ideal 8.5 - 9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime.
This is why when the new law came out, its author, Anthony Portantino, said, “Generations of children will come to appreciate this historic day and our governor for taking action.”
12.Which of the following is TRUE about the law
A. The law has not been put into practice yet.
B. The law will be passed by November 1, 2022.
C. The law is made by a university in California.
D. The law requires schools to start later than 8:30 am.
13.What can we learn from Bhargava’s words
A. The new law is of lasting benefit to students.
B. Lack of sleep affects adults more than children.
C. The amount of sleep people need changes with age.
D. Enough sleep makes sure that students are mentally healthy.
14.What does the underlined word “alert” in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A. Friendly. B. Honest. C. Calm. D. Sharp.
15.What’s the text mainly about
A. Lack of sleep could lead to health problems.

C. A law to start the school day later takes effect.

32.答案:are given ;an ; to ;believing ; necessarily ;to determine ;that/who ;yours ;but/yet ; differences
故填are given。
故填an。
故填to。
It is +adj. 故填to determine。
故填who/that。
People's appearance may change"和下句"their character usually stays the same"之间存在转折关系,所以用转折连词。故填but/yet。

Dear Jim,
I’m happy to receive your letter and I know you are coming to China.
Of the two trips to the Yangtze River and Mount Tai, both are highly recommended. Personally, I prefer the tour along the Yangtze River, the longest river and one of the mother rivers of Chinese civilization. You can learn a lot about the history of China and Chinese people. Moreover, the scenery along the river is amazing, with many well-known sightseeing spots such as the Three Gorges Dam. That’s why I think the trip along the Yangtze River will be a better choice.
Hope you’ll have a good time in China.
Yours
Li Hua
