The day a freshman moves into Harvard Yard is always said to be an enjoyable one and this was certainly true of my first day at the university: As my parents and I drove into the Yard, I looked at the wonderful scene and thought to myself “No freshman should be so lucky”!
I’m sharing a flat with four other girls. We are all completely different in terms of background, beliefs, and interests —we reflect the diversity (多样性) that Harvard is so proud of During this first week, it’s a comfort to have four girls I can call friends and that can help me deal with the new situation which is quite difficult at times.
Deciding what classes to take is the first step. At Harvard, the only necessary class for freshmen is a writing class —I’m actually able to take any classes I desire this year and the range of classes is amazing! How do I decide Thankfully, Harvard allows freshmen to try classes during the “Shopping Week”. Classes meet at their regular times, and we’re able to attend as many (or as few) as we want. If I finally decide to take a course, I’ll be held responsible for any work done during the “Shopping Week” . On the other hand, if I find a class doesn’t suit me or the professor is boring, I can decide not to take it!
All of these first-week experiences will make great life-time memories but the greatest treasure Harvard has offered me thus far has been the other students I’ve met. Every time I see someone either singing a moving song al an A Capella Concert, giving an amazing violin performance at a talent show, or saying something extremely inspiring in one of my classes, I’m blown away! Knowing and interacting with so many gifted people is what has made my first week at Harvard a truly priceless experience. One week down, four more years to go —I can’t wait!
1. Why does the author feel it a comfort to have the four roommates
A. They share the same flat with the author.
B. They have much in common with the author.
C. They help the author adapt to the new life at Harvard.
D. They reflect the diversity that Harvard is proud of.
2. What are freshmen expected to do through the “Shopping Week”
A. Go shopping every day. B. Determine what courses to take.
C. Attend a writing class. D. Meet classmates on a regular basis.
3. According to the author, what is the best part about being a Harvard student in the first week
A. Taking part in a talent show.
B. Staying with talented schoolmates.
C. Performing a moving song.
D. Enjoying the activities Harvard offers.
4. What is the best title for the text
A. My first week at Harvard B. A truly challenging experience
C. Choosing courses for the future D. Tips on being a freshman at University
【答案】1. C 2. B 3. B 4. A

Chicken soup. An apple. Hot Ica. When you’re sick, everyone from grandma to the next-door neighbor has a helpful suggestion for food that will put you on the road to recovery. What should we make of this wisdom — do some foods really help us feel better, or even actually get better And if so, why do we hardly feel hungry during illness when we might think nutrition is needed most
Yale University immunobiologist Ruslan Medzhitov believes our bodies are working not for making us feel better, but for being alive — and they might not always treat an illness as their greatest risk. Before take-away service was an option, getting food while sick meant putting a weakened body at risk. And finding food also meant losing more energy. Though life has changed, scientists assume these evolutionary holdovers (进化遗存) may still play a role.
That’s a challenge, because your body needs a healthy balanced diet when sick. It requires a specific range of nutrition — protein, fat, vitamins, and more — although Medzhitov says those preferences are a moving target. “The way it changes during illness depends on the type of illness, and that’s the part we don’t know well.” he says. Still by adding protein, fat, a fruit or vegetable, you can maintain a good balance of nutrition. That may be where the original idea of chicken soup came.
There’s no one definite answer as to what to eat during illness. Medzhitov believes that just listening to your body and its preferences is likely the best option. What you desire is more often than not what your body wants. When sick, your desire for one type of food and dislike for another don’t come by accident. Millions of years of evolutionary selection have taught your body to recognize them. “If your body needs vitamin C, you will have desire for something that contains it, even though sometimes we don’t know what that desire is for.”
9. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2
A. To give an example. B. To show a discovery.
C. To make a suggestion. D. To offer an explanation.
10. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. Nutritional needs change with illness.
B. People know little about types of illness.
C. Maintaining a balanced diet is a challenge.
D. Chicken soup offers well-rounded nutrition.
11. What does Medzhitov suggest during illness
A. Taking in vitamin C. B. Eating what appeals to you.
C. Drinking chicken soup. D. Minding the body’s change.
12. In which section of a website may this text appear
A. Nature. B. Culture. C. Education. D. Science.
【答案】9. D 10. A 11. B 12. D

分析前后文语境可知,第一段末尾内容“And if so, why do we hardly feel hungry during illness when we might think nutrition is needed most (如果是这样的话,为什么在我们可能认为最需要营养的时候的生病期间几乎不会感到饥饿呢?)”提出了疑问,而第二段的首句“Yale University immunobiologist Ruslan Medzhitov believes our bodies are working not for making us feel better, but for being alive — and they might not always treat an illness as their greatest risk.(耶鲁大学免疫生物学家Ruslan Medzhitov认为,我们的身体不是为了让我们感觉更好,而是为了活着——它们可能并不总是把疾病视为最大的风险)”紧接着讲到身体的机能是为了活着,而不是感知,且某种疾病可能并不被身体视为最大的风险,并继续进行了阐述。由此可知,第二段内容解释了第一段的疑问“生病时为什么不饿”。由此推知,第二段目的在于解释疑问。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段内容“It requires a specific range of nutrition — protein, fat, vitamins, and more — although Medzhitov says those preferences are a moving target. ‘The way it changes during illness depends on the type of illness, and that’s the part we don’t know well.’ he says.(它需要一系列特定的营养——蛋白质、脂肪、维生素等——尽管Medzhitov说这些偏好是一个不断变化的目标。他说:“它在患病期间的变化取决于疾病的类型,这是我们不太清楚的部分。”)”可知,身体在生病时所需要的营养或食物是变化的,依据于疾病的类型。由此可推知,营养需求随疾病而变化。故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段内容“Medzhitov believes that just listening to your body and its preferences is likely the best option. What you desire is more often than not what your body wants.(Medzhitov认为,倾听你的身体和它的偏好可能是最好的选择。你渴望的往往是你身体想要的)”可知,他认为,对于生病时需要吃什么的选择由身体来决定,即生病时需要的食物应是真正吸引你的那个,你身体想要的那个。故选B项。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段内容“What should we make of this wisdom — do some foods really help us feel better, or even actually get better (我们应该如何理解这种智慧——某些食物真的能让我们感觉更好,甚至真的变得更好吗?)”以及末尾段总结“There’s no one definite answer as to what to eat during illness.(关于生病期间吃什么,没有一个明确的答案)”可知,文章主要以“生病期间是否需要某些食物和生病期间吃什么”为话题进行了论述。由此推知,这样话题的文章应该是刊登在“科学”主页中。故选D项。

Sarah was never a morning person. The alarm ringing at 6: 30 a. m. was her daily terrible sound. But one thing made the horrible early hours acceptable —the comforting pleasant smell of fresh coffee moving through the air. Her favorite coffee shop was just a few minutes from her apartment, and it became her morning call.
One sunny morning, after turning off the alarm clock, Sarah rushed to get dressed. She was going to have an important presentation at work, and she needed the caffeine (咖啡因) more than ever. She grabbed her keys, rushed out of the door, and made her way to the familiar coffee shop.
As she joined the line of cars in front of the coffee shop, Sarah couldn’t help but feel the familiar rush of expectation. The smell of roasted coffee beans and the thought of that first drink was her little daily enjoyment.
The line moved slowly forward, and soon, Sarah found herself near the window. She reached for her wallet to pay, but before she could hand over her bank card, the waiter smiled and said,” Your coffee has been covered by the car ahead of you.”
Sarah was confused. ”Really “she asked, both surprised and thankful.
The waiter nodded. ”Yes, the woman in the car ahead wanted to pay it forward today. Enjoy your coffee!“
With a warm smile. Sarah took the free coffee. The unexpected act of kindness put a smile on her face, making her presentation feel a little less frightening. Before she drove away. Sarah, in her outside back mirror, saw a car approaching from behind.
