Tommy Rhomberg was a twelve-year-old young boy in Iowa. Last summer, his home state was destroyed by Great Derecho. He soon came up with a creative idea to raise money for his community by making and selling baseball bats out of wood brought down by the storm.
The idea for the bats originally began as Tommy prepared a birthday gift for his friend. Then many others expressed interest in owning Great Derecho bats of their own. At first, Tommy didn’t take it seriously, but since so many people in the area needed help after the storm, he determined to make a difference to them.
The first bat took Tommy 10 hours to carve and sand (用砂纸打磨) out of a tree branch that had fallen in his yard. With blisters (水泡) on his hands, Tommy had to refuse his brother’s request for making another bat. But as he began receiving more orders, he streamlined the process with a machine with the help of his grandfather. Tommy promised $20 from each order would go to the local disaster relief fund to rebuild the community.
When asked why he started the “bat business”, Tommy replied, “We got kind of lucky with the storm. We didn’t have much damage, but just driving around town there were people with houses destroyed, and I just wanted to raise money so we could help them rebuild. I feel like it’s really helping people.”
Tommy has made more than 100 bats, raising more than $2,500 to help out his community, and orders have come in from as far as Arizona and Connecticut. Tommy is not taking additional orders at the moment, but it’s possible that he’ll make more bats in the future, according to his website.

EQ means people’s ability to understand their own feelings and the feelings of others
It is the ability to perceive, interpret, demonstrate, control, evaluate, and use emotions to communicate with and relate to others effectively and constructively. This ability to express and control emotions is essential, but so is the ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Some experts suggest that emotional intelligence is more important than IQ for success in life.
It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life. They are also less likely to be troubled by internal problems. On the other hand, there is little doubt that people with low EQs often have problems getting on with other people and dealing with difficult situations; hence they have a harder time adjusting in life and in their careers.
People generally believe that a person’s IQ is determined by birth. However, most social scientists agree that EQ has a lot to do with education. Some are trying to study the possibility of improving a person’s EQ, especially in terms of “people kills”, such as understanding and communication.
Professor Mayer, recognised by many as a leading expert in the study of changes to people’s EQs, recently announced the results of a study on senior secondary school students. When students were introduced to those who had disabilities, they found that, afterwards, the non-disabled students were more willing to help people with pared to students who had not been involved in the study, they also showed a better understanding of the disabled students’ feelings. There was also an obvious change in the disabled students’ attitudes. They became more positive about life and more willing to try new things.
Altogether, the results of studies show that EQ is as important, if not more important than IQ. To get ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life requires getting on well with other people and being able to understand and react to situations in the best way possible. A high EQ is necessary for this — the higher the better. And the fact that it might be possible to raise EQs means that schools need to make sure that their students are receiving an education they really need, not solely based on IQ but on developing the entire character.
24. What is mainly talked about in the first two paragraphs
A. What is EQ B. What is IQ
C. the relationship between EQ and IQ D. the difference between EQ and IQ
25. According to the passage, which is the characteristics of people with high EQ
A. try new things B. brave in dangers
C. believe everybody around D. give chance to others
26. Which one of the following is not Professor Mayer’s opinion on EQ
A. can be improved B. is related to education
C. is determined by birth D. can help people get a good job
27. What methods the writer uses to support his arguments ________.
(1) giving examples
(2) using data
(3) citing ideas from expert or authors
(4) referring to common knowledge
A. (1)(2)(3) B. (1)(2)(4) C. (2)(3)(4) D. (1)(3)(4)

These days many people choose to live or work in other countries, which has been made possible because of the convenience of air travel and modern communications. I believe that this has more benefits than drawbacks.
_____28_____If a person moves away, it is true that air travel and devices such as Skype mean that communication and contact can be maintained. However, it is likely that a person will only be able to return one or two times a year during holidays, and speaking on skype or via email is not the same as face-to-face contact.
Despite this there are significant advantages it can bring to people’s lives. Firstly, it means that people have the opportunity to see other parts of the world and the way people live. For example, people from the West often go to work in Asia or the Middle East and visa-versa. _____29_____
In addition to this, on a wider level it may also benefit other countries. _____30_____To illustrate, nurses and doctors often move to work in hospitals in other countries when there is a shortage, so this is very valuable to the place they move to.
I would therefore argue that although there are disadvantages of the current trend to live and work abroad, they are outweighed by the advantages. It can enrich people’s lives and lives of the people in the countries that they move to.
A. If someone moves abroad for work, it is usually because their skill is required there.
B. The disadvantage of this development is the distance that is put between family members.
C. This enriches people’s lives as they get to learn about things different from their own country.
D. This helps people get to live the same life in the country they work.

A Rubbish Collector's Work Is Never Done
Brian Kane was a rubbish collector in Denver, Colorado. Eight hours a day, five days a week, fifty weeks a year, he rode on the back of a garbage truck. At each stop, he would jog to the back of buildings, then drag heavy rubbish cans to the truck. Brian never complained.
Brian saw these hardships as opportunities to become strong and fit. His job was a training ground for his lifelong dream: to climb Mount Qomolangma. On his thirtieth birthday, Brian took a leave from his job and flew to Nepal to begin the long, difficult journey up Mount Qomolangma.
Brian first climbed to a base camp. He planned to bring three oxygen containers with him to the top. At 29, 028 feet, it would be hard to survive without extra oxygen. Over the next two months, Brian climbed to 26, 000 feet, to Camp Four—the last place to rest below the top of the mountain. But when Brian saw this camp, he fell to his knees. “Rubbish!” he cried. Nearly a thousand empty oxygen containers littered the camp area. Humans had turned this beautiful, far-away place into a big rubbish pile. Brian was very sad. But with a strong determination he continued to follow his dream. Two days later he stood proudly on the top of Mount Qomolangma. He had reached the “roof of the world!”

EQ means people’s ability to understand their own feelings and the feelings of others.

Despite this, there are significant advantages it can bring to people’s lives.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是议论文。谈论了在其他国家生活或工作缺点和优点,并认为利大于弊。
【28题详解】
设空位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文内容“If a person moves away, it is true that air travel and devices such as Skype mean that communication and contact can be maintained. However, it is likely that a person will only be able to return one or two times a year during holidays, and speaking on skype or via email is not the same as face-to-face contact.(如果一个人离开了,确实,航空旅行和Skype等设备意味着可以保持沟通和联系。然而,一个人很可能一年只能在假期回来一两次,而且通过skype或电子邮件说话与面对面的交流是不一样的)”可知,本段主要讲述了,在国外工作,不能面对面和交流,所以B项“The disadvantage of this development is the distance that is put between family members.(这种发展的缺点是家庭成员之间的距离)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选B项。
【29题详解】
设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Firstly, it means that people have the opportunity to see other parts of the world and the way people live. For example, people from the West often go to work in Asia or the Middle East and visa-versa.(首先,这意味着人们有机会看到世界的其他地方和人们的生活方式。例如,西方人经常去亚洲或中东工作,反之亦然)”可知,本段讲述了去国外工作,可以看到世界的其他地方和人们的生活方式,所以C项“This enriches people’s lives as they get to learn about things different from their own country.(这丰富了人们的生活,因为他们可以了解到与自己国家不同的东西)”是对前文的总结,符合主题。故选C项。
【30题详解】
根据前文“In addition to this, on a wider level it may also benefit other countries.(除此之外,在更广泛的层面上,它也可能使其他国家受益)”以及后文“To illustrate, nurses and doctors often move to work in hospitals in other countries when there is a shortage, so this is very valuable to the place they move to.(举例来说,当护士和医生短缺的时候,他们经常去其他国家的医院工作,所以这对他们搬到的地方是非常有价值的)”可知,本段讲述了在国外工作对其他国家有利,所以A项“If someone moves abroad for work, it is usually because their skill is required there.(如果有人去国外工作,通常是因为那里需要他们的技能)”是对前文的进一步解释,后文是对此的具体举例。故选A项。
