Donald had his own dif ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ficulties sleeping that night. Not just because of the bright lights of the shelter or people's constant voices, it was the happening repeatedly nightmare (噩梦) that caused him to stay awake, to fear sleep. Donald was back in his small house. He did his best to ignore the howling winds outside his window. Yet he couldn't turn out the fearful whimpers (呜咽声) of his little dog, or the uncomfortable sounds of his mother anxious in her room next door, unable to sleep through the storm despite her insistence they would be all right.
Donald didn't want ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) his mother to be upset, but on some level, he was glad to hear she was awake. It meant he wasn't alone in the dark. Though he was 12, until recently it was impossible for Donald to fall asleep unless his mother lay down by his side.
Suddenly there was a crash. Their living room window is shattered (打碎) by 125 mile an hour winds. Troy rushed to Donald and sat anxiously on the edge of his bed. He did his best to calm his mother, and she to comfort him.
Soon water was seep ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ing(渗透) into the single floor house.Quickly it rose from ankle level to leg level. At Donald's insistence, they pushed their way through the water — now chest high — toward the front door. When they fought their way into the living room, water rose to their chins.
It was a struggle fo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r the boy and mother to stay afloat. In a total panic, desperate to hold on to something, Troy caught a curtain rod (杆). She's breathing hard, shouting that she couldn't swim.
Donald called out ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), “Mom! Hold on!” Just then Donald also caught a floating wood board.

Environmentalists s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )aid our planet was doomed to die. Now one man says they are wrong.
“Everyone know ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s the planet is in bad shape,” thundered a magazine article last year. Species (物种) are being driven to die out at record rates, and the rivers are so poisonous that fish are floating on the surface, dead.
But there's a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) growing belief that what everyone takes for granted is wrong: things are actually getting better.A new book is about to overturn our most basic assumptions about the world's environment.Rivers, seas, rain and the atmosphere are all getting cleaner. The total amount of forests in the world is not declining. The Skeptical Environmentalist by Bjorn Lomborg, professor of statistics at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, is an attack on the misleading claims of environmental groups, and the “bad news” culture that makes people believe everything is getting worse.
Now the attacks are i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ncreasingly coming from left wing environmentalists such as Lomborg, a former member of Greenpeace. The accusation is that, although the environment is improving, green groups — with profits of hundreds of millions of pounds a year — are using scare tactics (谋略) to gain donations.Lomborg's book doesn't deny global warming — probably the biggest environmental threat — but destroys almost every other environmental claim with many official statistics.
The Worldwatch Institu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )te claims that “deforestation has been accelerating over the last 30 years”.But Lomborg says that is simply rubbish. Since the dawn of agriculture the world has lost about 20 per cent of its forest cover, but in recent decades the forest area's depleting has come to a stop. According to UN figures, the area of forests has remained almost steady, at about 30 per cent of total land area, since the 1940s. Forests in countries such as the US, the UK and Canada have actually been expanding over the past 40 years. Despite all the warnings the Amazon rainforest has only shrunk (缩小) by about 15 per cent.
Nor are all our specie ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s dying out. Some campaigners claim that 50 per cent of all species will have died out within 50 years. But other studies show only 0.08 per cent of species are dying out each year. Conservation efforts have been successful. Whales are no longer threatened and the bald eagle is off the endangered list.
Environmental ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )groups claim that many of the improvements are the results of the success of their campaigns. Stephen Tindale, director of Greenpeace UK, said, “There are important examples, such as acid rain and ozone, where things aren't as bad as predicted, and that's because behavior has changed.”
59.In his book,T ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he Skeptical Environmentalist,what is Lomborg's main argument
A.Our planet is in bad shape.
B.The world's environment is improving.
C.The total amount of forests in the world is not declining.
D.Conservation efforts have been successful.
60.What is Lomborg's main accusation of environmentalists
A.They scared people into making donations.
B.They overturned our ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) basic assumptions about the world's environment.
C.They changed their behavior toward the environment.
D.They only told people bad news about the environment.
61.The underlined w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ord “depleting” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.reducing B.limiting C.expanding D.accelerating

An average 30 year old person who has eaten three meals a day since birth has eaten more than 30,000 meals to date. Even if you've only eaten half that much you have to admit this: you've let some of that breakfast, lunch or dinner go to waste. And it turns out we're all to blame for this shaming fact: 30% of all food produced in the world each year is wasted or lost. That's about 1.3 billion tons, according to a new report by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
That's the weight ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) of more than 8.6 million full grown blue whales, the largest creatures on earth. That's the weight of more than 2. 3 million Airbus A380s, the largest planes in existence. That's as if each person in China, the world's most populous country with more than 1.3 billion people, had one ton mass of food they could just throw into the dustbin. It's almost unfathomable,_isn't it
Setting aside ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )that big number, we find the people with the most money are the ones who waste the most. Per capita (人均), European and North American countries waste between 95 and 115 kilograms of food. Sub Saharan African, South Asian and Southeast Asian countries waste much, much less — between 6 and 11 kilograms per person.
Here's another sta ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tistic: all the food that the world's richest countries waste is about equal to all the food that sub Saharan Africa produces. The numbers: 222 million tons and 230 million tons, respectively (分别地). Basically, the wasted food of the rich could feed much of the African continent. And these numbers come as we've just been reporting about rising food prices around the world in the past week.
And my own perso ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nal tip: if I eat at a restaurant and can't finish it all, I ask for a doggie bag. I used to be a waiter years ago and will never forget the amounts of food I saw left on the table after the bill was paid. There's no reason to waste food. It's up to all of us to use our common sense to eat and shop just a bit more wisely.
62.According to th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, how much food do people produce each year in the world
A.About 3.3 billion tons. B.About 3.9 billion tons.
C.About 4.3 billion tons. D.About 5.6 billion tons.
63.What does the underlined word “unfathomable” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Possible to imagine. B.Impossible to change.
C.Impossible to understand. D.Possible to understand.
64.It can be learne ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d that the food the rich waste can support ________.
A.half the people in Europe B.most people of America
C.most people of Asia D.most people of Africa
65.The author gave his personal tip based on the fact that ________.
A.he was once very poor B.he was once a farmer
C.he once worked in a restaurant D.the price of food is very high
66.What is the purpose of this article
A.To show the author's opinion of food.
B.To let us live more wisely and not waste food.
C.To show the amount of wasted food a year.
D.To ask the richest countries to help African people.

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
Tired of your ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) old car and want to move on to a new one Or maybe you just don't have any use for the car anymore while still covering the expenses Why not sell it to someone who wants it and will take good care of it. You'll get some profit in return, and you won't have to be burdened with a car that will be more useful to others.
The first step ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )to selling your used car would be to prepare the car for the sale. Make sure that it is still in a useful condition. What use is there for the buyer if the car doesn't even work You'll never get buyers if the car is in such a poor state. So it's best to make your car presentable and competent. Take good pictures of your car, and make a list of its features that you think would appeal to potential buyers.
The next course to tak ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e would be to get the word out that you're selling your car. You can do it by making an ad in the newspapers or magazines, or you can use the Web and advertise through an Internet auction. Make sure that in your ad, you write down the car's features and condition as honestly as you can. If you're not sure on how to make an ad, browse through automotive(汽车的) magazines and issues and take a look at how the other sellers do it.
If your car is one of the new models in the automobile industry, you might be able to attract a lot of buyers. It would be best to make some improvements to your car, at least on its appearance. Make it obvious that it is a new model. If you're selling an old car, though, it might take more work to improve the car's appearance. You will also have to make sure the car still functions as well as new. There may be instances where you will have to change some things to the car to make it more attractive to buyers. Be careful with the electrical and electronic parts of the car when cleaning it. Check the engine, too, and make sure you have it fully charged and the oil and filter have been changed.
When doing the financial transaction for the sale, insist on a cash payment, or cashier's check. Just make sure that the money has already arrived in your account before signing over the title to your buyer. Never accept a personal check, though. It is not advisable, especially with such an amount. Once you've settled these things with your buyer, you can hand over the signed title and the key to the car, and move on with your own purchase ofa new car.
