This is the best time and this is the worst time;this is the time of great material richness and this is the time of desert of the soul. Everyone seems to be rushing around for something but they have never fulfilled their dreams. Everyone tries to seek happiness but it seems to be nowhere to be found.
When asked "What on earth can make you happy?",most modern men would give similar replies such as becoming extremely wealthy,or getting promoted in work and then becoming very wealthy. When asked "What will you do with your wealth?",they would make a long list of things they have been longing for. However, haven't you noticed the multimillionaires are not as happy as we common guys suppose them to be?Haven't you noticed that the multimillionaire celebrities(名人)don't even enjoy the fundamental freedom of going shopping with their own families without being followed by annoying paparazzi?
If we focus our happiness on such big issues,we are bound to be unhappy all through our life, because those big issues might just occur to us once in a blue moon.
As Socrates(苏格拉底)once put it,"He is the richest man who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature. "But how can we" be content with the least"?If you pay due attention, you will find our life is loaded with little joys, sometimes too little to be noticeable. Stop once in a while in your rush to your destination, look around and you will see that there are always little things worth cheering for. You got an "A" in a test. Good! You listened to all inspiring lectures. Great! You offered a helping hand to someone who had a flat tire. Amazing!Your dream girl or boy greeted you with a sweet smile. Fantastic!Let's cheer for the little joys in life! Please keep in mind that never should we wait to be happy!
4. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Money Means Happiness
B. Happiness Is All Around Us
C. Dreams Make Our Life Rich
D. Satisfaction Is Unacceptable
5. What does the underlined phrase in the third paragraph probably mean?
A. Rarely. B. Regularly.
C. Normally. D. Frequently.
6. According to Socrates, people who are "content with the least" are ________ .
A. greedy B. ambitious
C. optimistic D. reliable
7. In the last paragraph, the author suggests that we should ________ .
A. set up great goals in life
B. make full use of opportunities
C. enjoy every moment in life
D. seek significant issues in life
B 5. A 6. C 7. C

由其中的“If you pay due attention, you will find our life is loaded with little joys… Let's cheer for the little joys in life”可知,作者认为幸福一直就在我们身边。
由第三段中的“If we focus our happiness on such big issues, we are bound to be unhappy all through our life”可知,如果我们认为这些大事情才是幸福,我们就有可能一生都不开心,因为这些重大事情发生的概率很小。 A. Rarely. Regularly. Normally. 正常地;D. Frequently. 故选A。
推理判断题。根据第四段中苏格拉底说的话可知,知足常乐者最富有,因为知足(本身)就是天然的财富。结合选项: A. greedy贪婪的;B. ambitious有雄心的人;
由本文最后一段中的“Let's cheer for the little joys in life! Please keep in mind that never should we wait to be happy”可知,在本段中,作者建议我们应该享受人生的每一刻。
C
I was trained as a gymnast in Hunan, China, in the 1970s. The government wanted to transfer (转学) me to a school for athletes while my parents wanted me to become an engineer, because they firmly believed there was only one sure way to happiness: a safe and well-paid job. But my dream was to become a Chinese opera singer. Although I tried everything I could to go to opera school, I knew I was too old to be trained and my dream would never come true.
But that’s so unfair. So I was determined to find another calling — books. I satisfied my hunger for parental advice from the Fu Lei’s Family Letters by Fu Lei and Zhu Meifu, found my role model of an independent woman from Jane Eyre, learned to be efficient from Cheaper by the Dozen, and inspired myself to study abroad after reading Complete Works of Sanmao and Lessons from History.
I came to the U. S. in 1995 where I started comparative paring and contrasting give scholars a more complete understanding of a topic. So I thought, well, if comparative reading works for research, why not do it in daily life too So I started reading books in pairs. They can be about people who are involved in the same event — Benjamin Franklin by Walter Isaacson and John Adams by David McCullough, for example, or friends with shared experiences. I also compare the same stories in different genres or similar stories from different cultures, as Joseph Campbell did in his wonderful book The Power of Myth.
Books have given me a magic portal (入口) to connect with people of the past and the present. I have come to believe that coming true is not the only purpose of a dream. Its most important purpose is to get us in touch with where dreams come from, where passion comes from and where happiness comes from. Even a shattered (遭受极大打击的) dream can do that for you. So may books be always with you.
8. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1
A. To provide background information. B. To list some examples.
C. To make a comparison. D. To summarize the paragraphs below.
9. From which book did the author get the motivation to study abroad
A. Fu Lei’s Family Letters. B. Jane Eyre.
C. Cheaper by the Dozen. D. Complete Works of Sanmao.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The future of comparative reading.
B. The concept of comparative reading.
C. The writer’s experiences of comparative reading.
D. The writer’s achievements of comparative reading.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. How I Chase My Dreams B. How Books Open My Mind
C. Why I Am Keen on Comparative Reading D. Why a Shattered Dream Changes My Life
A 9. D 10. C 11. B

Acid rain is very harmful to the environment because it makes living things die. Acid rain affects life in the water as well as life on the land. It is even worse in the water because the fish need the water to breathe. When the water gets polluted, the fish get sick and end up dying.
All rainwater contains some level acidity. Acidity is measured by PH, which stands for potential of hydrogen(氢). The PH scale measures the amount of acid in a substance. PH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral(中性的). The lower the number is on the PH scale, the more acidic that substance is. Normal rainwater has a PH of 5. 6. When the PH level of rainwater goes below 5. 6, it is considered acid rain.
All of the sea life will die when the water becomes too acidic. For example, all fish will die when the water goes below a PH of 4. 5. Most of the frogs and insects that live around the water will also die when the water reaches a PH of 4. 5. When the water has a PH of 5. 5, all of the bottom-dwelling bacterial decomposers(分解体), animals that eat the remains of the food that other animals don’t want, will begin to die. When these decomposers die, they will leave the under-composed food on the bottom. This will make the water dirty and polluted. All fresh water shrimps(虾) will die when the water has a PH of 6. 0. Aquatic plants will grow the best when the water has a PH between 7. 0 and 9. 2. If the acid rain problem gets worse. all of the sea life will eventually be gone.
12. What can we know about acid rain
A. It does more harm to life in the water than on land.
B. It will kill the living things as soon as it touches them.
C. It is rainwater which contains any amount of acidity.
D. It is a substance which has potential of hydrogen.
13. Which of the following can die most easily in acidic water
A. All fish. B. Frogs and insects.
C. Bacterial decomposers. D. Fresh water shrimps.
14. According to the text, we know that _______.
A. if the PH of rainwater is 5. 6, all of the sea life will be gone
B. if the PH of sea water is below 7. 0, it is not a problem
C. if the PH of rainwater is below 5. 6, it is dangerous
D. if the PH of sea water is below 4. 5, some of the sea fish can’t die
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The definition of acid rain. B. How to measure rainwater’s PH level.
C. The effects that acid rain has on sea life. D. How to protect sea life from acid rain.
A 13. D 14. C 15. C

根据第一段中“Acid rain affects life in the water as well as life on the land. It is even worse in the water because the fish need the water to breathe. When the water gets polluted, the fish get sick and end up dying.(酸雨不仅影响陆地上的生命,也影响水中的生命。在水里情况更糟,因为鱼需要水来呼吸。当水被污染时,鱼会生病并最终死亡。)”可知,酸雨它对水中生命的危害比陆地上更大。故选A。
根据第二段的句子“The lower the number is on the PH scale, the more acidic that substance is.(PH值越低,表示该物质的酸性越强。)”和最后一段的句子“All of the sea life will die when the water becomes too acidic. For example, all fish will die when the water goes below a PH of 4.5. Most of the frogs and insects that live around the water will also die when the water reaches a PH of 4.5. When the water has a PH of 5.5, all of the bottom-dwelling bacterial decomposers(分解体), animals that eat the remains of the food that other animals don’t want, will begin to die. When these decomposers die, they will leave the under-composed food on the bottom. This will make the water dirty and polluted. All fresh water shrimps(虾) will die when the water has a PH of 6.0.(当水变得太酸时,所有的海洋生物都会死亡。
根据第二段中“PH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral(中性的). The lower the number is on the PH scale, the more acidic that substance is. Normal rainwater has a PH of 5. 6. When the PH level of rainwater goes below 5. 6, it is considered acid rain.( PH值在0到14的范围内测量,其中7为中性。PH值越低,表示该物质的酸性越强。正常雨水的PH值为5.6。当雨水PH值低于5.6则被认为是酸雨。)”可知,如果雨水的PH值低于5.6时雨水就被认为是酸雨,此时就很危险了。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Acid rain affects life in the water as well as life on the land. It is even worse in the water because the fish need the water to breathe. When the water gets polluted, the fish get sick and end up dying.(酸雨不仅影响陆地上的生命,也影响水中的生命。在水里情况更糟,因为鱼需要水来呼吸。当水被污染时,鱼会生病并最终死亡。)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要讲述的是酸雨对海洋生物的影响。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Looking up at the black sky with shining stars, I smiled. The next morning, my Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club teammates and I would begin the first leg (赛程) of the George Bass Surfboat Marathon — the longest and toughest surfboat race in the world.
Over seven days and seven legs, we’d row 190km down the NSW coast, starting at Corrigan’s Beach in Batemans Bay and ending in Cocora Beach, Eden.
It was a competition my 10 teammates and I had been training two years for. At dawn each morning, including Christmas Day, we’d been straight into the boat and out on the water. For the last six months we’d added in gym sessions, too.
Surf clubs from all over Australia had come to compete. When our turn came to set off, we readied our boat. “We can do this, ladies,” I cheered.
On the water we gave it everything we had. My aching muscles screamed at me to stop, but I pushed through. After two-and-a-half hours, we crossed the line first and won that leg. Over the next three days, we won another two and lost one. With three of four wins in the bag, on the fifth day we were hopeful. We only needed one more win to secure the marathon.
Our surfboat marathon win was so close — then disaster struck! When we made our way back to the shoreline, the water became aggressively rough. It was nothing we hadn’t rowed through before, so we kept going. But the boat started to shake and suddenly, it turned side-on and one by one we leapt off the boat, me included. Seconds later, the 300kg surfboat suddenly slammed on top of me. My body immediately went numb (麻木).
Emergency doctors raced over. It was decided, due to the severity of my injuries, I should be airlifted to hospital. I was taken to Canberra where I underwent tests, including CT scans, whose results showed I had a spinal (颈椎) injury. I received an operation. When I woke up, the surgeon visited. “We’ve inserted metal plates to put your back together,” he said. “We’ll remove them in about six months.”
注意:
The support I received while I was in hospital was amazing.

Now, after spending two months in hospital, I’m back at home.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The support I received while I was in hospital was amazing. With the medical staff’s help, I pushed myself one step at a time, determined to get better. It was hard, but I knew it’d be worth it. My surfboat teammates were equally amazing. They barely left my side and took turns nursing me, encouraging me and comforting me. A Go Fund Me page raised over $50,000 to help cover my medical costs, which was truly unbelievable. I was convinced a few broken bones would never keep me from pursuing my dream.
Now, after spending two months in hospital, I’m back at home. Although there’s still a long way to go before full recovery and getting back on the water again, I am resolved not to give up but to continue. My life may be as unpredictable as the ocean, but my love for surfboat will never fade away. Four months later, the big day for the metal plate to be removed from my body ultimately comes, accompanied by the thrilling news that we can kick off preparations for next George Bass Surfboat Marathon.

10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The future of comparative reading.
B. The concept of comparative reading.
C. The writer’s experiences of comparative reading.
D. The writer’s achievements of comparative reading.
11. What is the best title for the text
A How I Chase My Dreams B. How Books Open My Mind
C. Why I Am Keen on Comparative Reading D. Why a Shattered Dream Changes My Life
D
C Bacterial decomposers.

On the water, we gave it everything we had.
