Technology use in class
You will be allowed to use your favorite type of technology (e.g. , laptop, iPad) in class if you choose to do so, since some people prefer taking notes that way. If you decide to use it, please avoid distractions, like e-mail checking or accessing social media during class.
Academic integrity
You will be expected to be the author of the assignments you turn in for this course. Your papers will require you to draw upon existing research to inform and lend credibility (可信度) to your arguments. To credit the ideas of others properly, you must follow two main rules:
●Always cite the source of a finding, idea, or argument that is not your own, no matter how much rewording you have done.
●Always put the findings, ideas, and arguments you cite into your own words. If a direct quote is absolutely necessary, put the text in quotation marks (引号) and include a page number in your citation.
Absences and late assignments
You are expected to attend every class, since your participation in class will count towards your final grade. Students with excused absences will have a chance to complete missed class assignments (and participation) without punishment. Otherwise, class participation can only be completed during class. Assignments submitted after the deadline will be considered late assignments. Late assignments will be graded with of the grade if submitted by no more than one week following the original deadline. If not submitted within one week following the original deadline, late assignments will not be graded.
1. Where is this text probably taken from
A. A school regulation. B. A college textbook. C. An exam paper. D. An academic article.
2. To achieve academic integrity, what are you expected to do
A. Avoid assessing media during class. B. Submit your totally original work.
C. Present others’ ideas as your own. D. Cite others’ ideas in a proper way.
3. What will happen if you submit an assignment within one week after the due date
A. You will be punished. B. You will get a half grade.
C. You will receive a zero. D. You will have to rewrite it.

根据“Absences and late assignments(旷课和迟交作业)”中的“Late assignments will be graded with of the grade if submitted by no more than one week following the original deadline.(迟交的作业如果在原定截止日期后不超过一周内提交,将扣除二分之一的分数)”可知,如果你在截止日期后一周内提交作业,你将得半分。故选B。
B
We were designing a wheelchair for a college engineering course. While my classmates were certain that we needed to use steel and felt only steel would be strong enough, I thought steel would be too heavy and aluminum (铝) would be a better option. But the student who strongly argued for steel worked at a bike shop. A few days later, when the big and heavy steel arm kept dropping down, I wished I had shown more determination to defend my position.
I was a crafty kid. Not crafty like fox, but crafty to the point that my parents would come home ready for whatever “artistic” explosion I had made that day — painting, clay sculpting, clothes, and more. But when I studied engineering in college, these pursuits were deep-sixed. Not only was I stretched for time, but I didn’t think they were relevant to my academic work. I hesitated to highlight my female crafting interests in the male-dominated engineering environment where I already felt like an outsider.
When I went on to pursue a Ph.D. early in the epidemic, I felt anxious and turned to crafting. One day I was making a set of dice as a gift for a friend. While putting the liquid resin (树脂) into the silicone mold (硅胶模具), I made a joke to my partner that I was “injection molding” — a standard engineering manufacturing (制造) process. I suddenly realized that although resin art is not injection molding in the technical sense, it shares the spirit and probably some skills.
Soon I saw more connections between engineering and crafting that I had previously ignored. And crafting taught me not to give up when my product didn’t match my initial vision and to consider the failed creation a learning experience, just as an engineer must.
Since then, I’ve built crafting back into my free time. I mentioned my dice-making experience at a robotics conference and explained in a team meeting how we could gain inspiration from art experiences. I was glad that the responses were positive — not rude or unfriendly, as I used to fear.
4. What can we know about the author and her classmates?
A. They didn’t get along well with each other.
B. They worked part-time at a local bike shop.
C. They had disagreements when creating a wheelchair.
D. They knew little about the structure of wheelchairs.
5. What does the underlined word “deep-sixed” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Dug out. B. Put up. C. Followed through. D. Put aside.
6. What did the author realize after making a gift for a friend?
A. She should develop new hobbies. B. Crafting can help make her a better engineer.
C. She should become more determined. D. Crafting needs great practical skills.
7. Which of the following words can best describe the author
A. Creative and sensitive. B. Smart but stubborn.
C. Confident but unrealistic. D. Honest and frank.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第一段中“We were designing a wheelchair for a college engineering course. While my classmates were certain that we needed to use steel and felt only steel would be strong enough, I thought steel would be too heavy and aluminum (铝) would be a better option. (我们当时正在为一所大学的工程学课程设计一种轮椅。当我的同学确信我们需要使用钢,并且认为只有钢才足够坚固时,我认为钢太重了,铝会是更好的选择。)”可知,在设计轮椅时,同学们认为应该用钢才足够坚固,而作者认为铝是更好的选择;由此可知,作者和同学之间在制作轮椅时存在分歧。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Not only was I stretched for time, but I didn’t think they were relevant to my academic work. I hesitated to highlight my female crafting interests in the male-dominated engineering environment where I already felt like an outsider.(我不仅时间紧张,而且我认为它们与我的学术工作无关。在男性主导的工程环境中,我已经感觉自己像个局外人,我犹豫着要不要强调我作为女性对手工艺的兴趣。)”以及画线词所在句“But when I studied engineering in college, these pursuits were deep-sixed.(但当我在大学学习工程学时,这些追求deep-sixed。)”
根据第三段中“One day I was making a set of dice as a gift for a friend. While putting the liquid resin (树脂) into the silicone mold (硅胶模具), I made a joke to my partner that I was “injection molding” — a standard engineering manufacturing (制造) process. I suddenly realized that although resin art is not injection molding in the technical sense, it shares the spirit and probably some skills.(一天,我做了一副骰子作为礼物送给朋友。在把液态树脂放进硅胶模具的时候,我跟我的搭档开玩笑说我在“注射成型”——一个标准的工程制造过程。我突然意识到,虽然树脂艺术在技术意义上不是注射成型,但它具有相同的精神,可能还有一些技巧。)”以及第四段“Soon I saw more connections between engineering and crafting that I had previously ignored. And crafting taught me not to give up when my product didn’t match my initial vision and to consider the failed creation a learning experience, just as an engineer must.
根据第二段第一、二句“I was a crafty kid. Not crafty like fox, but crafty to the point that my parents would come home ready for whatever “artistic” explosion I had made that day — painting, clay sculpting, clothes, and more. (我是个狡猾的孩子。不像狐狸那样狡猾,但狡猾到我的父母回家后准备好迎接我那天所做的任何‘艺术’爆炸——绘画、泥塑、衣服等等。)”以及最后一句“I hesitated to highlight my female crafting interests in the male-dominated engineering environment where I already felt like an outsider.(在男性主导的工程环境中,我已经感觉自己像个局外人,我犹豫着要不要强调我作为女性对手工艺的兴趣。)” 故选A。
C
Ancient builders across the world created structures that are still standing today, thousands of years later. Roman builders built thick concrete sea barriers against waves. Mayan builders created great sculptures, and Chinese builders constructed walls against foreign enemies.
A growing number of scientists have been studying materials since a long time ago. They are breaking apart pieces of buildings and reading historical texts hoping to learn how they have stood for thousands of years. The research has turned up a surprising list of materials that were mixed into old buildings. They include tree bark, volcanic ash, rice and beer. These unexpected materials can have the ability to get stronger over time. Figuring out how to copy these features can have real impacts today. While some of our modern concrete has the strength to hold up very tall buildings and heavy structures, it cannot compete with the durability of these ancient materials.
Many scientists have turned to the Romans. Starting around 200 BC, the Roman Empire was building concrete structures that have stood the test of time. Even in places where seawater has been hitting structures for ages, you will find concrete basically the way it was when it was poured 2,000 years ago. They think they have found an important reason why some Roman concrete has held up structures for thousands of years. That the ancient materials have an unusual power to restore themselves and “cure” cracks when they form is the most shocking for them. Exactly how is not yet clear, but scientists are starting to find the reasons.
Today’s builders cannot just copy the ancient processes. Even though Roman concrete lasted a long time, it couldn’t hold up heavy buildings. Instead, researchers are trying to take some of the ancient materials and add them into modern mixes. People don’t need to make things last quite as long as the Romans did. If we add 50 or 100 years to concrete’s lifespan, we’ll surely require less pulling down, less maintenance and less material in the long run.
8. What were the mentioned Roman and Chinese buildings both used for
A. Defence. B. Travel.
C. Soldier training. D. Seawater control.
9. Which word can best describe the ancient buildings
A. Energy-efficient. B. Long-lasting. C. Delicate. D. Flexible
10. What surprises the scientists most about the ancient building materials
A. Their large cracks. B. Their clear concrete.
C. Their internal structures. D. Their self-repairing ability.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the future concrete
A. Contradictory. B. Expectant. C. Doubtful. D. Pessimistic.
A 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据文章第一段“Ancient builders across the world created structures that are still standing today, thousands of years later. Roman builders built thick concrete sea barriers against waves. Mayan builders created great sculptures, and Chinese builders constructed walls against foreign enemies.(世界各地的古代建筑者所建造的建筑在几千年后的今天仍然屹立不倒。罗马的建造者建造了厚厚的混凝土防波堤。玛雅工匠创造了伟大的雕塑,中国工匠建造了抵御外敌的城墙)”可知,罗马的建筑是为了抵御海浪而中国的建筑则是为了抵御外敌的。故选A。
根据文章第二段“They are breaking apart pieces of buildings and reading historical texts hoping to learn how they have stood for thousands of years. The research has turned up a surprising list of materials that were mixed into old buildings. They include tree bark, volcanic ash, rice and beer. These unexpected materials can have the ability to get stronger over time. Figuring out how to copy these features can have real impacts today. While some of our modern concrete has the strength to hold up very tall buildings and heavy structures, it cannot compete with the durability of these ancient materials.(他们正在拆除建筑物的碎片,阅读历史文献,希望了解它们是如何屹立数千年的。
根据文章第三段“That the ancient materials have an unusual power to restore themselves and “cure” cracks when they form is the most shocking for them.(这些古老的材料具有一种不寻常的力量,可以在裂缝形成时自我修复和“治愈”裂缝,这对他们来说是最令人震惊的)”可知,科学家们对古代建筑材料的自我修复能力最为惊讶。
根据文章最后一段“Today’s builders cannot just copy the ancient processes. Even though Roman concrete lasted a long time, it couldn’t hold up heavy buildings. Instead, researchers are trying to take some of the ancient materials and add them into modern mixes. People don’t need to make things last quite as long as the Romans did. If we add 50 or 100 years to concrete’s lifespan, we’ll surely require less pulling down, less maintenance and less material in the long run.(今天的建筑者不能只是照搬古代的工艺。尽管罗马混凝土持续了很长时间,但它无法支撑沉重的建筑物。相反,研究人员正试图将一些古代材料添加到现代混合物中。人们不需要像罗马人那样把东西做得那么久。如果我们将混凝土的寿命延长50年或100年,从长远来看,我们肯定需要更少的拆除,更少的维护和更少的材料)”可推知,作者对于未来混凝土充满期待。故选B。
D
Most of us would like to be more creative, but we assume there is little we can do about it. Psychology professor K. Anders Ericsson claims that with enough practice, any of us can become experts. However, he is quick to add that this requires a specific kind of practice that Ericsson calls ‘deliberate practice’: that is, pushing beyond one’s comfort zone and setting goals that are above one’s current level of performance. He says he has yet to find the limits on being successful and he doesn’t believe them to be real.
Ericsson has looked primarily at artistic and athletic skills, but can these findings apply to creativity Most experts agree that even if most people cannot hope to become creative geniuses, they can learn to become more creative through practice. Psychologists claim that there are actually two levels of creativity, which they refer to as’Big C’ and ‘small c’. Big C creativity applies to breakthrough ideas, ones that may change the course of a field or even history. Small c creativity refers to everyday creative problem solving, like creating a new recipe or improving a process, which psychologists subdivide further into similar and different thinking. Similar thinking involves examining all the facts and arriving at a single solution. In contrast, different thinking involves coming up with many possible solutions. What most people think of as creativity generally involves different thinking and can be taught, practised and learnt.
Even with practice, different thinking alone cannot make one creative, however. Scott Barry Kaufman, a cognitive psychologist, says that most creative people share one personality quality: openness to new experience. Since this quality and these processes have been identified, less creative people can try to emulate them. Normally, we tend to reproduce what we already know because creative ideas move us into unfamiliar territory involving risks and following the usual behaviors is comfortable.
Moving outside of our comfort zone, engaging indeliberate practice and tolerating contradictory ideas, risk and failure are all things we can learn to do better. It is unlikely that doing so will transform any of us into creative geniuses, but it does have the potential to increase our level of creativity.
12. Why does Ericsson think he can’t find the limits
A. No restrictions exist. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Each one can succeed. D. The goal is ambitious.
13 Which of the following is an example of ‘small c’
A. Settling in outer space.
B. Building a plastic doghouse.
C. Developing robots to look after the old.
D. Explaining the theory of evolution in class.
14. What does the underlined word “emulate” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Justify. B. Limit. C. Copy. D. Assess.
15. What message does the author seem to convey in the text
A. We can learn to be more creative.
B. Life is full of various challenges.
C. It’s better to take deliberate practice.
D. Most can become creative geniuses.
A 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第一段“He says he has yet to find the limits on being successful and he doesn’t believe them to be real. (他说他还没有找到成功的限制,他不相信这些限制是真的。)”可知,埃里克森认为他找不到极限是因为不存在任何限制。故选A。
根据第二段“Small c creativity refers to everyday creative problem solving, like creating a new recipe or improving a process, which psychologists subdivide further into similar and different thinking. (小创造力指的是日常创造性地解决问题,比如创造一个新配方或改进一个过程,心理学家将其进一步细分为相似和不同的思维。)”可知,建一个塑料狗窝是“小c”的例子,因为这是创造一个新东西的过程,故选B。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段的“Normally, we tend to reproduce what we already know because creative ideas move us into unfamiliar territory involving risks and following the usual behaviors is comfortable. (通常情况下,我们倾向于复制我们已经知道的东西,因为创造性的想法会把我们带入一个充满风险的陌生领域,而遵循通常的行为是舒适的。)”可知,划线词所在句子的意思是“由于这种品质和这些过程已经被确定,缺乏创造力的人可以尝试模仿他们”,划线词的意思是“模仿,复制”,和copy意思相近,故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段的“Moving outside of our comfort zone, engaging indeliberate practice and tolerating contradictory ideas, risk and failure are all things we can learn to do better. It is unlikely that doing so will transform any of us into creative geniuses, but it does have the potential to increase our level of creativity. (走出我们的舒适区,进行不经意的练习,容忍矛盾的想法,风险和失败,这些都是我们可以学会做得更好的事情。这样做不太可能把我们中的任何一个人变成有创造力的天才,但它确实有可能提高我们的创造力水平。)”可知,本文主要讲的是通过练习,我们可以提高我们的创造力,因此本文主要想表达的是“我们可以学着更有创造力”。故选A。

Be a true runner
For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one’s first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12-year-old who hasn’t been in other events to run the two-mile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
In a moment, Bill was up again and running.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I didn’t know when I crossed the finish line.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
In a moment, Bill was up and running. I couldn’t think of anything but to follow him closely. I could even feel the air hitting my face and I was totally worn out. Naturally, my pace slowed down. Just at the moment, Barry’s words “Just follow Bill” called me back. Convinced that I was no longer a loser, I refreshed up again and accelerated and soon I was quite close to Bill again. Injected with confidence, I headed for the finishing line. The gun cracked again, announcing the last 200 meters. I closed my eyes, threw my head back and ran with my last ounce of strength, in the direction of the dream line.
I didn’t know when I crossed the line. I still kept running on when a thunderous applause burst, which signaled the birth of the champion. I stopped and opened my eyes and saw my camp of kids and the camp counsellor gathering around me. “We have won the race! We are the champion!” they shouted and cheered, throwing me in the air. Showered with hugs and applause and whistles, I felt a surge of gaiety sweeping over me. To me, the race meant more than a champion; it well proved that I was not a loser as an athlete and that I could further explore my potential. Just as Hemingway put it, “The true nobility is superior to your former self.”

Technology use in class
You will be allowed to use your favorite type of technology (e.g. , laptop, iPad) in class if you choose to do so, since some people prefer taking notes that way. If you decide to use it, please avoid distractions, like e-mail checking or accessing social media during class.
Academic integrity

A. Justify. B. Limit. C. Copy. D. Assess.
15. What message does the author seem to convey in the text
A. We can learn to be more creative.
B. Life is full of various challenges.
C. It’s better to take deliberate practice.
D. Most can become creative geniuses.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
In a moment, Bill was up again and running.
