It was May 17, 2015, and Brian, then 36, had been out of communication distance since the 13th. Brian climbed the hill next to his temporary camp and scanned his hand-held radio, hoping to catch a signal. Realizing search planes would have a hard time spotting him, he, for the first time since losing contact, felt a strong sense of hopelessness. In the distance, a wolf howled and Brian howled back. Then he made his decision: if he was ever going to see his family again, he’d just have to start walking.
On May 17, Brian decided to make his move, filled his bag with necessary things, picked up his gun and started walking though it was raining. Brian walked well into the night, making his way about 15 miles until he couldn’t walk anymore. But the next stretch was harder, the land hillier. Keep climbing, he’d tell himself, and you’ll see a hunting shelter just over the hill top. Then he’d make it to the top only to see another hill. To make matters worse, his core body temperature was falling below the usual level as a result of being in severe cold for a long time, putting his life at risk. For the first time, he began to panic. He knew if he didn’t move quickly, he’d die.
Three days into his voyage on foot, with little water, he was becoming dangerously dehydrated (脱水的). Falling and lying on the ground, Brian dreamed of his family as if hearing his daughters constantly laughing. Suddenly, Brian sat up, “I want to see my wife. I want to my kids grow up, he thought, rising to his feet. I’ll start walking.”
Brian moved on with heavy steps. About five miles from Repulse Bay, he spotted radio towers—the first sign of a community. He struggled forward until he saw a shelter at the top of the hill. With the last of his energy, he climbed up and broke in, where he slept solidly for 12 hours. The walk into town the next day was easy. Brain arrived at 5:30 am on May 20.
Today, safe at home, Brian still gets emotional remembering the welcome he received. “Everyone was very happy everywhere I went,” he says.
4. What made Brian feel hopeless
A. Losing contact with the outside. B. Little hope of being rescued.
C. The break-down of his radio. D. The appearance of wolves.
5. What threatened Brian most during his journey
A. Changeable weather. B. Challenging mountainous areas.
C. Dangerously low body temperature. D. Great loneliness.
6. What led to his final survival
A. His determination to reunite with his family.
B. The desire to explore the wilderness further.
C. The hope of finding a hunting shelter.
D. The encouragement of the local community.
7. What might be the best title of the passage
A. Fight with the cold. B. Dance with wolves.
C. A recovery from illness. D. A journey back home.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. D

D“A journey back home (回家的旅程)”符合题意。故选D。

Antique, idol, dialogue, geography, grammar, architect, economy, encyclopedia, telephone, microscope… all these common English words have something in common: they originate from Greek. To this list, we could add thousands more words, some common and others less so. Clearly, the Greek language has had an important influence on the English language.
According to one survey, more than 150,000 words of English are of Greek origin. These include technical and scientific terms but also more common words like those above.
Words that starts with ‘ph-’ are usually of Greek origin, for example: philosophy, physical, photo, phrase, philanthropy.
Many English words are formed of parts of words that originate from the Greek language, including the following examples:
phobia (fear of) , as in arachnophobia — the fear of spiders
micro (small) , as in microscopic — so small it’s hard to see
demos (people) as in democracy — government by the people
Greek mythology (神话) has been very influential in Western culture, particularly its art and literature. Unsurprisingly, some common expressions in English come from these ancient myths and beliefs.
“To have an ‘Achilles’ heel” means “to have a weakness”. Achilles was a Greek hero and central character in Homer’s epic poem, The Iliad. He was only weak at his heel. Example sentence: I’m trying to eat more healthily, but chocolate is my Achilles’ heel.
The ‘Midas touch’ is another common expression from Greek mythology. Describing a near-magical ability to succeed at anything one attempts, the expression originates from a story of King Midas, who is remembered for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold. Example sentence: My brother’s business is so successful, he really has the Midas touch!
An idiom which has its roots in ancient Greece is ‘crocodile tears’. The phrase might come from the popular ancient belief that crocodiles weep while eating their victims. In fact, crocodiles do lubricate (润滑) their eyes by means of their tear ducts (泪管), usually when their eyes start to dry out after being out of the water for a long time. However, the behaviour is also thought to happen when crocodiles feed. It’s used in English to describe expressions of sadness that are insincere.
8. Why are so many English words listed at the beginning of the passage
A. To prove that they have much in common.
B. To show the Greek influence on English.
C. To attract the readers’ attention to their origin.
D. To present the popularity of the Greek language.
9. Which kind of the following people express their insincere sadness according to the text
A. People with crocodile tears. B. People with Midas touch.
C. People with a phobia. D. People who have Achilles’ heel.
10. What has great influence on western art and literature according to the text
A. Words with Greek origins. B. The forms of the words.
C. Greek mythology. D. The Greek animals and wars.
11. How is the passage developed
A. In time order. B. By listing examples.
C. By comparison. D. Through cause and effect.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。文章介绍了希腊语和希腊神话如何影响英语语言、如何影响西方文化。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的最后一句“Clearly, the Greek language has had an important influence on the English language. (很明显,希腊语对英语有重要的影响。)”可知,列举那么多来自希腊语的英语词汇的目的是展示希腊语对英语的影响。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段中“An idiom which has its roots in ancient Greece is ‘crocodile tears’.(有一个源于古希腊的成语叫“鳄鱼的眼泪”。)”和“It’s used in English to describe expressions of sadness that are insincere.(它在英语中用来形容不真诚的悲伤表情。)”可知crocodile tears意思是“鳄鱼的眼泪”,被用来描述不真诚的悲伤。故选A项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。由第五段第一句“Greek mythology (神话) has been very influential in Western culture, particularly its art and literature. (希腊神话对西方文化有很大的影响,尤其是它的艺术和文学。)”可知,影响西方文学和艺术的是希腊神话。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。作者为了说明希腊语言和希腊神话对于英语的影响,在第一段“Antique, idol, dialogue, geography, grammar, architect, economy, encyclopedia, telephone, microscope… all these common English words have something in common: they originate from Greek. (古董(Antique)、偶像(idol)、对话(dialogue)、地理(geography)、语法(grammar)、建筑师(architect)、经济(economy)、百科全书(encyclopedia)、电话(telephone)、显微镜(microscope)……所有这些常见的英语单词都有一个共同点:它们都源于希腊语。)”首先列举了英语单词作为例子。在第四段“Many English words are formed of parts of words that originate from the Greek language, including the following examples (许多英语单词都是由源自希腊语的单词的部分组成的,包括以下例子)”又列举了英语中带有希腊音素或者部分希腊词根的单词,最后三段列举了来自希腊神话的英语表达。所以选B项“通过举例子”符合题意。故选B项。

As activists and leaders first gathered in Dubai for COP28, the UN’s climate summit (峰值), a week ago, the chances of significant progress seemed small. The choice of the summit’s host country — the United Arab Emirates (阿拉伯联合酋长国), one of the world’s leading petrol (汽油) states with its chairman the head of its national oil company, threatened to turn the event into a funny show.
Instead, COP28 proved productive. For the first time the world has agreed to move away from the coal, oil and natural gas that are the major causes of global warming. The 198 parties to the UN Framework Convention (框架协定) on Climate Change agreed on a text that called for a change away from fossil fuels (化石燃料) “in a just and orderly way”.
An agreement between America and China ahead of the summit helped lay the basis. It meant that the two largest polluters and powers together tried to turn language on fossil fuels into the deal, which helped influence certain petrol states to move towards agreement.
Yet a global agreement is only one small step. A far bigger and harder one will be to translate words on a page into action in the real world. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels will depend on making them uncompetitive. Rich countries can achieve the purpose with a combination of carbon prices and subsidies for clean technologies. That is, the government can charge the companies using fossil fuels and reward those using clean technologies.
Poorer countries will need help. Developing countries with fossil-fuel reserves argued that it was unfair to expect them to give up one of their few income streams without being given aid to do so. The aid is expected to be around $25bn — 50bn a year in funds over the rest of this decade. Meanwhile, rich countries will try to limit their responsibility to the developing world.
In a sense, bridging the gap will determine whether the beginning of the end for the fossil-fuel age has come.
12. What had been expected of COP28 in Dubai
A. Heated debate. B. Little progress.
C. Great achievement. D. Practical agreement.
13. What can we know about the agreement reached by the 198 parties
A. It turned the deal of cutting fossil fuels into reality.
B. It confirmed the major causes of global warming.
C. It showed the common desire for a green world.
D. It promised a quick reduction in fossil fuels.
14. What does the underlined word “subsidies” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Fines. B. Plans. C. Funds. D. Investigations.
15. What’s the passage mainly about
A. COP28 found a solution to global warming.
B. COP28 failed to achieve its original purpose.
C. The rich world has a duty to poorer countries.
D. The world reached a deal in reducing fossil fuels.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. D
根据第一段中“As activists and leaders first gathered in Dubai for COP28, the UN’s climate summit (峰值), a week ago, the chances of significant progress seemed small. (一周前,当活动人士和领导人首次齐聚迪拜参加联合国气候峰会COP28时,取得重大进展的可能性似乎很小)”和第二段的“ Instead, COP28 proved productive.(然而COP28证明是富有成效的)”可知,原本人们认为这次大会进展甚微。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“For the first time the world has agreed to move away from the coal, oil and natural gas that are the major causes of global warming. The 198 parties to the UN Framework Convention (框架协定) on Climate Change agreed on a text that called for a change away from fossil fuels (化石燃料) “in a just and orderly way”. (世界首次同意不再使用煤炭、石油和天然气,这些都是导致全球变暖的主要原因。《联合国气候变化框架公约》的198个缔约方就一份文件达成一致,呼吁“以公正有序的方式”改变对化石燃料的依赖)”可知,大家一致同意减少对化石燃料的依赖,以解决全球变暖问题。由此推知,这展示了大家对绿色世界的共同愿望。故选C项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“That is, the government can charge the companies using fossil fuels and reward those using clean technologies. (也就是说,政府可以向使用化石燃料的公司收费,并奖励那些使用清洁技术的公司)”可知,政府会奖励使用清洁技术的公司,因此是会对清洁技术给予补贴或资助,画线词的意思应该与Funds“资金”相近。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,并结合第二段“For the first time the world has agreed to move away from the coal, oil and natural gas that are the major causes of global warming. The 198 parties to the UN Framework Convention (框架协定) on Climate Change agreed on a text that called for a change away from fossil fuels (化石燃料) “in a just and orderly way”.(世界首次同意不再使用煤炭、石油和天然气,这些都是导致全球变暖的主要原因。

“Hello, hello!” called out a pleasant voice.
Andy Waters looked up and saw his new neighbor, Francis Frame.
“Hello, yourself,” he shouted cheerfully, as he fastened on his roller skates. “Want to go skating, Francis ”
“I can’t. I lost my roller skates last fall, and mother says she can’t afford to buy me another pair just now.”
Andy looked at his neighbor’s long legs. They were just the right kind, he thought, to make a fast skater.
“That’s hard luck, Francis, because if you had some roller-skates, maybe you could be in our skating relay race (接力赛) next Saturday.”
“Oh! Don’t I wish I had some skates!” cried Francis.
“I have to go for the training now but I can let you use my skates sometime when I am not using them.” Andy said bye to Francis.
When Andy skated slowly toward the end of the block, he thought about Francis Frame. Francis hadn’t lived in the block very long, and none of the other boys knew him. So the new boy was left to himself a great deal, and must often be very lonely.
“Yes,” said Andy to himself, “it certainly is a pity about Francis! I ought to do something about it.”
As he skated to the vacant lot where they usually trained and raced, he met the captain of his team, a large boy called Buddy Bowers. “I stopped for a few moments to talk to my new neighbor,” said Andy. “don’t you think we could use another boy on our team for the race That new boy, Francis Frame, I mean ”
“We just can’t do it. The other team wouldn’t let us take on an extra boy.” Buddy refused.
Soon the training began and Andy practiced very hard, for his heart was set on having his team win the race. Still, he couldn’t help knowing that his short legs kept him from being a fast skater. On the way home, Andy thought of a way to help his team win as well as help Francis Frame — he could pretend to be sick on the racing day and have Francis take his place!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Thinking of this, he raced to the home of his new neighbor.

Finally came the racing day, and Andy and Francis showed up together.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Thinking of this, he raced to the home of his new neighbor. Andy found Francis in Francis’ garden. He excitedly told Francis the news and handed him his roller skates. But Francis didn’t like the idea, which he thought was wrong. Andy patiently said to him, “You have the most important long legs of speed skaters, and my short legs can’t resist this difficulty no matter how hard I try, only you can make our team win the championship!” Francis took his advice and began to train hard.
Finally came the racing day, and Andy and Francis showed up together. He said to Francis, “Come on, my friend! Don’t be afraid. You can make it!” Francis turned to Andy and smiled, but still felt nervous inside. The game started. Francis was on his way. Andy kept cheering him on in the audience, hoping to win the first place. Finally, when the race drew to a close, Francis reached the finish line first. Andy shouted. “Francis, you are the best.” The two hugged and smiled happily after the game.

C Great achievement.

“Oh! Don’t I wish I had some skates!” cried Francis
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Thinking of this, he raced to the home of his new neighbor.
