They call America’s Got Talent the biggest stage in the world, and I definitely felt like it that day last April. I stood on that huge, brightly lit stage in California. As I stared out at the audience of thousands, it hit me that this moment could change my life forever.
I’d always loved to sing and had already signed up for the school talent show in fourth grade when I started stuttering (结巴). I went from being a carefree 10-year-old to a shy one. I was afraid of speaking in class, ordering at restaurants, and even introducing myself. So I decided to practise over and over again. To my astonishment, the words came smoothly when I sang. My stutter disappeared. I felt so free onstage performing in the talent show.
By the summer I was 16, one afternoon I started practising my guitar at home. On the spot, I wrote a song I called “I Will Trust”. I sang about how lost I felt. The next day, I filmed a video of myself performing the song and posted it on YouTube. Hundreds of complete strangers left comments that I had cheered them up with my music.
Then I signed up for the America’s Got Talent audition (试镜). When I finished, the judges and the whole crowd were on their feet. I couldn’t believe it! Judge Cowell told me I had a pure and beautiful voice. When introducing myself to the judges and audience, I stammered my name, Amanda, and then my age, 18. “As you can probably tell…” I explained, “I have a bit of a speech stutter... But I found that I don’t stutter when I sing.”
I couldn’t hold back my tears. My stutter made me shy and fearful, but I was given the gift to speak through my music. My wildest dreams were coming true, dreams I’d never thought possible.
4. What amazed Amanda during singing practice in Paragraph 2
A. The beautiful voice. B. Her fluent singing.
C. The lucky encounter. D. Her brave performance.
5. What did strangers think of her video on YouTube
A. Ordinary. B. Awful. C. Inspiring. D. Relaxing.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Committed and warmhearted. B. Social and easygoing.
C. Responsible and creative. D. Determined and courageous.
7. Why did the author cry in the end
A. She finally overcame her stutter. B. She was moved by the audience online.
C. She was content with her smooth speech. D. She found a new way to express herself.
C
Do you edit text messages carefully before sending them If so, you may be the kind of person who takes pride in crafting even the simplest message.
A new book Writing For Busy Readers makes the argument for being the careful kind of writer even in informal messages. It lays out the data for sharp, simple writing.
Todd Rogers and Jessica Lasky-Fink are behavioural scientists, both at Harvard. Their “Writing For Busy Readers” is cleverly titled: all readers are busy nowadays. People are filled constantly with messages, from the mailbox to the inbox to the text-message reminder. What to read, what to skim and what to ignore are decisions that nearly everyone has to make dozens, or even hundreds of times a day.
The authors present well-established principles that have long been prized in guide s to writing including The Economist’s style book: cut unnecessary words, choose words everyone knows and keep sentences simple.
Take “less is more”. Most books on writing well suggest cutting off needless words. However, in Writing for Busy People, the authors have tested the principles. For example, in an email to thousands of school-board members asking them to take a survey, cutting the length from 127 to 49 words almost doubled the response rate (from 2.7% to 4.8%).
The researchers found that a longer message makes recipients (收件人) think the task (such as filling out a survey) will take longer, too. Writers must sometimes choose to be informal but effective instead of sympathetic but ignored. From Facebook posts to online-travel reviews, even brief, informal pieces of writing that follow these rules get more likes, shares and so on. From essays to text messages organizing dinner plans, devoting time to the needs of readers has evident benefits. If you are so busy that you write a badly-organized message that readers scan, ignore and delete, then you might as well have not written it at all.
8. What is the purpose of the question in Paragraph 1
A. To raise people’s interest in simple writing. B. To correct the old view about text messages.
C. To reveal the negative effects of messages. D. To improve the texting skills of people.
9. What can be inferred about Writing for Busy People
A. It emphasizes the importance of timely messages.
B. It brings evidence on the well-established principles.
C. It was written by a well-known author Todd Rogers.
D. It was once published in the magazine The Economist.
10. What does the author want to show
A. Brief writing gains few popularity. B. Messages are too short to understand.
C. People tend to overlook long messages. D. Sympathetic messages get many responses.
11. What does the passage mainly focus on
A. How to write effectively. B. When to text messages.
C. The languages used in writing. D. The methods of sending emails.

A recent study reveals about 68 percent of Gen Z adults and 20 percent of millennials (千禧一代) are choosing to remain with their families. This represents the largest generational shares among all age groups. Furthermore, the study estimates that 51 million individuals are currently living in multi-generational households.
What’s perhaps more surprising is that these young adults don’t anticipate leaving their for at homes. Both millennials (47%) and Gen Zers (41%) expect to continue living with their families for at least another two years. So what are the reasons behind young adults staying at home
The reasons behind young adults staying at home are diverse but mainly come down to financial or health-related circumstances. The data suggests that the average millennial, living with a family member at the age of 32, shares their home with three or four other people. Many of them work in food services, construction, or education.
Compared to previous generations, millennials are slower to leave the nest, with 18 percent of baby boomers and 17 percent of Gen X having lived with their parents at the same age as today’s millennials. Several other factors could also explain this generational difference. Younger generations may find it financially advantageous to stay with family to economize on expenses such as childcare, electric bills, rent, or future down payments. Additionally, the increasing number of Millennials and Gen Zers choosing to care for family members may contribute to this trend.
When it comes to the areas with the highest percentages of multigenerational households, Los Angeles stands out, with 35 percent of its millennials and 81 percent of Gen Z residents still living with family members. The high living expense of living in this big city, which is 51 percent above the national average, makes it difficult for young adults to struggle on their own. California’s Riverside area with 35 percent of millennials and 85 percent of Gen Zers remaining at home follows closely while New York rank the third place, with 28 percent of millennials in the Big Apple living in multigenerational households.
12. What can we learn about young adults from the study
A. They need the attention of their families. B. They seek financial support from families.
C. It is hard for them to face the changing world. D. It is common for them to attend to their parents.
13. Which of the following words can replace “economize” in Paragraph 4
A. Save. B. Count. C. Insist. D. Decide.
14. What makes it hard for young adults in Los Angeles to move out
A. Working pressure. B. Stress from childcare.
C. Complex social network. D. The high cost of living.
15. What could be the most suitable title of the text
A Growing Concerns over Young Adults
B. Various Reasons for Millennial Anxiety
C. More Young Adults Choose to Live with Families
D. Young Adults Struggle to Deal With New Challenges

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I’d just returned from a beautiful fall early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.
My little dog ran in excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but in vain.
At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in exhaustion. At my age, one trip is usually plenty! I began to take key inventory(库存). The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. I had a spare car key, but it was temperamental(不可靠的), and the key ring would be expensive to replace. The iron heart decoration made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. But life is too short to agonize(折磨)over these things, I reminded myself.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow shower. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening.
It was peaceful until I heard the horrible screech of my car alarm bursting from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted(插入)the temperamental key in the door and finally opened it, and then started it until the alarm stopped.
Back in the house, I waited uneasily, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming it was a neighbor ready to be angry with me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
In the snow stood a smiling neighbor, with my keys hanging from her finger.

Do you edit text messages carefully before sending them If so, you may be the kind of person who takes pride in crafting even the simplest message.
A new book Writing For Busy Readers makes the argument for being the careful kind of writer, even in informal messages.

故选A。
D

C. Complex social network. D. The high cost of living.
15. What could be the most suitable title of the text
A. Growing Concerns over Young Adults

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
In the snow stood a smiling neighbor, with my keys hanging from her finger.

【答案】范文
In the snow stood a smiling neighbor, with my keys hanging from her finger. One of them held out her hand with my keys in it and a big smile on her face! I wanted to hug her to express my deepest gratitude, but because of COVID-19, all I could do was say, “Oh, my goodness! Thank you!” She told me that my car key had an alarm button, and they kept pressing it until they found my home. I took the keys in my hands and thanked them again and again.
I was amazed by her cleverness and couldn’t wait to thank her. Before she and the other neighbors waved goodbye and disappeared into the evening snow, she said, “It’s not a big deal. We are so happy to help. You would have done the same thing!” I don’t think I would have done the same thing! Pressing the alarm until I heard a car alarm would not have occurred to me. I was astonished by her clever kindness and wished I could have hugged her. Instead, I hugged the keys.
