If I have a goal in life, it isn’t to be driving a Rolls-Royce. It’s to be giving away more than $1,000,000 a year and having an impact on people’s lives. I have the success today because I always had to work for what I wanted. I grew up accustomed to risks and disappointments, so I was used to moving forward, no matter what.
In 2008, I went to Los Angeles where I tried to get hired as an agent, an analyst and a financial broker. Unfortunately, all these doors slammed in my face. The world’s economy was in a bad state, so I knew I would have to do a little spinning of my own.
Youth involves a certain innocence but also perseverance. The word “can’t” wasn’t in my vocabulary. I partnered with a friend buying distressed multifamily properties around Houston. Even though we were enthusiastic and backed with start-up sums, I didn’t make a deal work. My friend moved on to other projects. Alone, I put all my money into the next real-estate project. I put the time in, I dreamed it, but once again the deal fell through. Two months later, though, the deal came back around. That was when the path opened, luck changed, and I was ready to form my own company. I haven’t looked back. Only ahead.
I’m now able to give back to communities and causes. I donate about $500,000 a year, much of that going to research to cure rare diseases. We also support a lot of services for disadvantaged children in Houston and other places.
I have always been someone who can see the big picture and have never been distracted by things that get in the way. There are lessons to be learned and the biggest of those is to keep going. You may have to change the path, but always keep that vision in front of you.
4. Which of the following about the author is true
A. He donated a lot of money to improve his company’s image.
B. He often encountered difficulties in the process of growing up.
C. He started his own company together with a friend.
D. He changed jobs several times while in Los Angeles.
5. By saying “do a little spinning of my own” in the second paragraph the author probably means he would_____________.
A. look for a part-time job independently B. make his contributions to the economy
C. give in to the disappointing reality D. be self-employed to develop his career
6. Which quality of the author is not shown in the passage
A. Perseverance. B. Optimism. C. Innocence. D. Kindness.
7. Which one is probably the best title of the passage
A. Saying No to “Turning Back” B. Tips for a Successful Business
C. Jumping over Economic Downturns D. A Life-time Pursuit of Dream

A powerful earthquake hit Morocco on Friday night, killing over 2,500 people and causing huge damage over a large area. The quake was one of the most powerful ever recorded in Morocco. It’s also the country’s deadliest earthquake in over 60 years. So far, the earthquake is reported to have killed over 2,680 people. It has injured over 2,500 others. The earthquake was especially dangerous because it happened at night, when people were asleep in their homes.
Marrakesh is a big city that’s popular with tourists. Many of its modern buildings seem to have survived the earthquake, but the old part of the city, Medina, was hit hard. It has buildings that are over 1,000 years old. Many of those buildings were demolished.
Outside of Marrakesh, the earthquake caused even more damage. In the Atlas Mountains, the earthquake’s center, there are many small villages, some of which were nearly destroyed.
Many of the people in the area live in simple houses made of mud bricks, which is a traditional way of building in Morocco. But it’s not strong enough to protect against earthquakes. Although the Moroccan government has laws that require buildings to be built more safely, these rules are often ignored.
Rescue workers have been working hard to save those affected by the quake. In larger cities, rescue efforts seem to be going well. But it has taken a lot longer for help to reach remote areas in the mountains. Many of these villages are difficult to get to. The earthquake caused landslides, blocking roads, and making these places even more difficult to reach. In some areas, phone and electrical service were also knocked out, leaving these places completely cut off. That means that the local people in some remote areas have had to deal with the situation on their own. In some areas, people have been digging through the broken stones or bricks with their hands, trying to find survivors. Many people are sleeping outside, unsure if their houses are safe.
Many outside countries have offered to help Morocco. Some countries have offered teams of experts; others have offered supplies.
8. What do we know about the earthquake in Morocco
A. It killed 2,680 people. B. It occurred during the day.
C. It was the deadliest in recent decades. D. It injured less than 2,500 people.
9. What does the underlined word “demolished” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. destroyed B. decorated
C. protected D. constructed
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. People living the quake-hit area are in urgent need of help from other countries.
B. The current serious situation faced by people in disaster areas.
C. Possible causes of the earthquake happening in Morocco.
D. Reasons why the earthquake caused so much damage in Morocco.
11. What is the text
A. A news report B. A short story
C. A research article D. A diary entry
D
Arguably, the biggest science development of the year to date has been the images of the very depths of the universe taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Those images beg a comparison between the external and internal universes that science is bent on observing and understanding.
Decades ago, astrophysicist Carl Sagan famously said, “The universe is also within is. We’re made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself. ” He was commenting then on the reality that our internal universe was as complex and as fantastic as the outer space.
There are many similarities between the progress we’ve made in understanding the universe and in piecing together life’s inner workings. Like the technological developments that took us from Galileo’s telescope to the Hubble to the JWST, life science tools have also improved rapidly. From early light microscopes to modern super-resolution ones, these developments have afforded researchers a deep look into biology’s infinitesimal (无限小的) landscape. Learning that living things were composed of cells was, not a terribly long time ago, a revolutionary observation. Since then, scientists have been able to dive ever deeper into the components of life.
Going beyond merely observing the complicated makeup of organisms, life scientists can now discover the workings of molecules (分子). And that is where scanning the universe differs from peering into biology. Understanding the universe, especially from a functional standpoint, is not necessarily an immediate urgency. Understanding biology on that level is. Simply observing the amazing internal structure of cells is not enough. Biologists must also characterize how all those parts interact and change in different environments and when faced with various challenges. Being able to image a virus or bacterium is nice at the level of basic science. But knowing how viruses gain entry into cells and spread, infect, and disable can literally save lives. Through time, biology has risen to this mechanistic challenge. Not only can life science tools produce images of cell components, even more importantly, they can help predict the effects of drugs on receptors, of immune cells on foreign invaders (入侵者), and of genetic perturbations (基因干扰) on development and aging.
This is not to belittle the work of scientists researching into universe. They should rightly be praised for delivering views of impossibly distant, impossibly massive phenomena. My aim is to celebrate these accomplishments while at the same time recognizing that science’s inward search for detail and insight is equally impressive and, in my view, more urgent. The output of both the outward and inward explorations should stimulate wonder in everyone. After all, it’s all star-stuff.
12. Why does the author quote Carl Sagan’s comment in Paragraph 2
A. To introduce the background. B. To prove an assumption.
C. To make a comparison. D. To present an idea.
13. Like the study of the universe, life science has been advancing in ________.
A. study approaches B. system management
C. research facilities D. technology integration
14. We can infer from Paragraph 4 that biologists’ work is ________.
A. practical B. risky C. flexible D. popular
15. As for life science, which would the author agree with
A. It has received universal recognition. B. It should enjoy priority in development.
C. It can be applied in the majority of areas. D. It is more complicated than space science.

Erie raised his daughter Riley alone. One day, Eric noticed a young teenage boy standing in front of a drugstore. He approached him, and found out that the boy wanted to buy medicine for his sick mother, but had no money. The boy cried out, “if I don’t bring home medicine, my mom will die. But I won’t be able to handle it.”
Upon hearing this, Erie didn’t hesitate to pay for the medicine. “I’ll pay for the medicine on his behalf,” he said, handing the pharmacist (药剂师) a couple of bills from his pocket. The boy looked at Erie with grateful eyes, and cried, “Thank you so much. You are heaven-sent.”
“There will always be people willing to help you, son,” Eric told him before handing him two portions of food. “Here, take this to your mom and have a hot meal with her,” he said before letting the boy go.
His daughter Riley saw the whole scene and said, “Dad, we have barely enough money. Why did you pay for the medicine ” “Riley, the good you put out into the world will eventually find its way back to you. Just keep doing good,” Eric told his daughter.
When Riley turned thirty, she needed an operation urgently after being told there was something wrong with her heart. With difficulty breathing, Eric rushed Riley to the hospital in an ambulance. “You’ll be alright, Riley.” he cried. “Don’t worry, Daddy is here. We’ll get through this together,” he promised her.
Eric did try his best to find the money for bis daughter’s operation. He asked all of his friends, but it was still not enough. Therefore, Eric decided to sell their house. It was enough to pay for her operation, but they would be left with nothing, “it’s okay,” he told himself. I will be able to earn money again, but if I lose my daughter, nothing will ever bring her back.”
By the time Erie made it back to the hospital, Riley was in her hospital room, weak and pale. He sat beside her bed and held her hand. “You’ll be okay, my sweet daughter. We’ll soon have the money for the operation,” he promised her.

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Decades ago, astrophysicist Carl Sagan famously said, “The universe is also within is. We’re made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself. ” He was commenting then on the reality that our internal universe was as complex and as fantastic as the outer space. (几十年前,天体物理学家卡尔·萨根说过一句名言:“宇宙也在身体之内。”我们是由恒星组成的。我们是宇宙认识自己的一种方式。他当时的评论是,我们的内部宇宙和外太空一样复杂、一样奇妙。)”可知他提出我们的身体像宇宙一样复杂和奇妙,这是一个想法,故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Like the technological developments that took us from Galileo’s telescope to the Hubble to the JWST, life science tools have also improved rapidly. From early light microscopes to modern super-resolution ones, these developments have afforded researchers a deep look into biology’s infinitesimal (无限小的) landscape. (就像从伽利略望远镜到哈勃望远镜再到JWST的技术发展一样,生命科学工具也在迅速改进。从早期的光学显微镜到现代的超分辨率显微镜,这些发展使研究人员能够深入观察生物学的微小景观。)”可知就像对宇宙的研究一样,生命科学的研究设施也在不断发展,故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Biologists must also characterize how all those parts interact and change in different environments and when faced with various challenges.
根据最后一段“My aim is to celebrate these accomplishments while at the same time recognizing that science’s inward search for detail and insight is equally impressive and, in my view, more urgent. (我的目的是庆祝这些成就,同时认识到科学对细节和洞察力的内在探索同样令人印象深刻,在我看来,更加紧迫。)”可知作者认为生命科学要优先发展,故选B。

【答案】
Eric suddenly noticed an envelope on the bed. It was addressed to him. He opened it and was surprised to find a check inside and a note that read: “You’d saved a boy’s mother years before. Thank you so much for the three packs of medicine, and two portions of food.” Immediately, Eric remembered the boy he had helped a long time ago. He went to the nurse station and asked them who visited Riley. The nurse told him there was no one except the doctor. Eric came to realize the doctor was exactly that boy.
He ran to the doctor’s office and hugged him. “Thank you son,” Eric cried. The doctor said, “It's I who should say thanks. That day, you saved my mother’s life. Since then, I promised myself that I would study hard to become a doctor to help more people. Now I have achieved the dream.” “I am proud of you,” Eric said with happiness. The doctor smiled and promised to arrange the operation for Riley soon and take care of her during her hospitalization. Riley realized that what her dad said was true -- the good you put out into the world will find its way back to you.
