Coming into the freshman year at Paul College, Sansa was concerned about her ability as an individual to make an impact on such a large community, for it was never hard for her to stand out from peers in high school. Luckily, each first-year student in Paul College takes part in what is called the First-year Innovation and Research Experience, commonly referred to as the FIRE Program, an extracurricular project assigned by the institution. Have you ever taken a personality test and found the results to be scarily accurate checked your horoscope and had everything come true or taken an online quiz that told you precisely what your favorite Disney princess means about you Well, we certainly have done so too many times, so we decided to do a little investigation into how Internet -quizzes, magazines and horoscope books seem to know us so well.
We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenomenon that occurs when individuals believe that personality descriptions apply specifically to them, despite the fact that the description is actually filled with information that applies to everyone. It was named after P. T. Barnum, a famous 19th century showman, who would famously say, “There’s a fool born every minute.”
Indeed, Barnum proved to be right, as pseudoscience —such as astrology and personality tests — remains popular to this day. The Bamum effect explains why extremely general statements, such as the results of your personality test, seem so specific to you. Don’t believe us Well, late psychology professor Bertram Forer offered some proof.
In a historic study, Forer conducted a personality test to his students. Forer copied statements such as “You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.” and “You have a tendency to be critical of yourself.” from the newspaper’s horoscope column and gave a test to every student. Forer asked his students to rate the accuracy of the test from one to five, with “one” being the least accurate and “five” being the most accurate. The average rating was 4.26. The universally high ratings from students on the personality test supported the Barnum effect.
One of the most important factors when reproducing this study is to keep the statements as vague as possible, with a mix of mostly positive and some negative content. For example, using the phrase “at times” makes for a powerful Barnum Effect. See “At times you are outgoing and sociable, while at other times you are shy and reserved” who would not agree with that statement
So, keep in mind that we are not immune to the Barnum effect. Take everything you hear with several grains of salt.
8. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2
A. To present a controversial opinion. B. To provide an example of an idea.
C. To offer a solution to a problem. D. To define the meaning of a term.
9. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Potential application of the Barnum effect. B. Further explanation of the Barnum effect.
C. Supporting evidence for the Barnum effect. D. A reasonable doubt of the research process.
10. Why do so many people believe the statements in horoscope and personality tests
A. They are so specific. B. They are unclear.
C. They are positive. D. They are believable.
11. How is the passage organized
A. Phenomenon—analysis. B. Cause—effect.
C. Problem—solution. D. Claim—counterclaim.
D
The rise of the robots has raised the possibility of a future where there is simply less wok for humans to do. To tired office workers, a world where we all have a bit more leisure time sounds rather nice. Yet what really matters is how work will be distributed across the workforce.
The recent past shows there is no reason to believe it will be evenly (均衡地) spread. The length of the average working week in the UK has declined steadily from about 59 hours in the mid-19th century to 32 hours in 2009. But averages hide a lot.
While trends among women have been stable, there have been big shifts among men. Males in well-paid full-time employment are now working slightly longer hours on average than two decades ago. Meanwhile, men in full-time employment at the bottom of the wage ladder are working much less.
On top of that, the number of low-paid men who work part-time has increased sharply. Twenty years ago, one in 20 men with low hourly wages worked part-time; today it is one in five. Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies shows this phenomenon is only happening among the low-paid. In better-paying jobs, part-time men are still fairly rare. Gender roles within families might tend to be similar too. Low-paid men may be choosing to shoulder more childcare responsibilities so their partners can return to work.
Yet it is clear that the distribution of work will matter to people. Britain has both overemployment and underemployment problems: official data show 3.4m people in Britain want to work more hours while 3.2m want to work few hours for less pay. The underemployed are likely to be waiters or cleaners. The overemployed are most likely to be doctors or chief executives. This indicates an economy where demand and supply of skills are out of sync.
Nobody knows for sure how the next wave of automation will shake up demand for different skills. Perhaps doctors will gain the free time they desire. Others might find themselves in greater demand. But short of us developing a much better system for training people quickly for the jobs economy needs, it seems likely that in the future—as now—there will be too much work for some, and too little for others.
12. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs
A. The development of robots will get rid of humans’ work.
B. Future leisure time will be allocated evenly across the workforce.
C UK has taken some measures to stop the decline of working hours.
D. The averages may not be the accurate indicators of the steady decline of working hours.
13. What can we learn from the analysis by Institute for Fiscal Studies
A. Low-paid men are to blame for the low employment.
B. More well-paid men are choosing to work part-time.
C. Part-time men have increased only among the low-paid.
D. Part-time men rarely shoulder childcare responsibilities.
14. What do the underlined words “out of sync” mean in paragraph 5
A. Important. B. Imbalanced. C. Undoubted. D. Harmful.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The total amount of human labor will be decreased.
B. Better training systems will be built across the world.
C. Robots contribute to uneven distribution across the workforce.
D. The number of low-paid men who work part-time has increased.

Lily was renowned for her desire to achieve perfection in everything she undertook. Whether it was school projects, art assignments, or even helping her parents with household chores, Lily’s commitment to excellence was unwavering.
One sunny summer day, Lily’s family decided to spend a day at the beach. As they arrived, Lily’s eyes were immediately drawn by a group of children who playfully built and then tore down their sandcastles. They giggled and shouted, their excitement on full display. “How silly, ” she thought, not quite getting why they enjoyed doing that.
Lily, being herself, decided to build a perfect sandcastle that would become the envy of all beachgoers. She began to plan every detail in her mind, from the balanced structures of the towers to the delicate decorations. Then, she set about piling sand to make the towers and walls of her sandcastle. Painstakingly, she crafted each feature of her work, carefully smoothed the surfaces and adjusting every detail to her vision.
Jake, Lily’s younger brother, didn’t seem too concerned with building a fantastic sandcastle. He picked a spot nearby and amused himself with the sand. He scooped up handfuls of sand, let it slip through his fingers like grains of time, and then molded it into careless shapes with the carefree abandon of a child. Jake’s happiness was contagious. Mom and Dad joined him, laughing and joking over Jake’s playful creations. From time to time, they called out to Lily and invited her to join the fun, knowing that the pursuit of perfection could be exhausting.
Nevertheless, Lily stayed where she was, determined to create an impressive sandcastle. She frowned at Jake’s unconventional, abstract art-like sandcastle shapes and persisted in her efforts. However, the process didn’t go as smoothly as she had anticipated. The sand didn’t always hold its shape, and the waves constantly lapped at the edges of her creation.
Para 1: As the day wore on, Lily’s sandcastle kept losing its form.

Para 2: With bitter smile, Lily decided to join her family.

根据第一段中的“Coming into the freshman year at Paul College, Sansa was concerned about her ability as an individual to make an impact on such a large community, for it was never hard for her to stand out from peers in high school. (刚进入保罗学院的一年级,Sansa就开始担心自己是否有能力在这么大的一个社区里产生影响,因为对她来说,从高中同学中脱颖而出并不难)”可以推出,Sansa在高中时期的表现是非常突出的。故选A。
根据第二段中的“Each team had to create a unique product that tackled one of the five following real-world problems: “Water is Life”, “Food”, “Threats from Cyberspace”, “Medical Breakthroughs”, and “Addictive Society”. (每个团队必须创造一个独特的产品,解决以下五个现实世界问题中的一个:“水是生命”、“食物”、“网络空间威胁”、“医学突破”和“成瘾社会”)”可得知,每支参赛队伍都需呈现一个产品来解决某个实际问题。故选B。
【6题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段的第二句话“They earned a spot in the final round of the conference, where they competed against the top team from each of the other Grand Challenge groups. (他们在决赛获得了一席之地,在那里他们与其他各组的顶级球队竞争)”可以得知,Sansa所在的团队挺进了决赛,在决赛中他们需要和其他队伍进行比拼。由此猜测,划线部分“competed against”是“vie with”的同义复现,即“和……竞争”。A. Contest against. 和……竞争;B. Give way to. 向……让步;C. Break up with. Make up with.和……和解。故选A。

D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据文章第二段“We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect.
根据文章第三段最后一句“ Don’t believe us Well, late psychology professor Bertram Forer offered some proof. (不相信我们?嗯,已故的心理学教授Bertram Forer提供了一些证据)”和第四段“In a historic study, Forer conducted a personality test to his students.
根据文章第二段中“We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenomenon that occurs when individuals believe that personality descriptions apply specifically to them, despite the fact that the description is actually filled with information that applies to everyone. (我们发现我们都成了巴纳姆效应的受害者。巴纳姆效应是一种现象,当人们认为性格描述只适用于他们时,尽管事实上这些描述中充满了适用于所有人的信息)”以及倒数第二段“One of the most important factors when reproducing this study is to keep the statements as vague as possible, with a mix of mostly positive and some negative content. (在复制这项研究时,最重要的因素之一是让陈述尽可能模糊,主要是积极的内容和一些消极的内容)”可推知,很多人相信占卜和性格描述,是因为这些描述中充满了适用于所有人的信息,也就是说这些描述其实是很模棱两可的。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。阅读文章可知,文章第一段“Have you ever taken a personality test and found the results to be scarily accurate, checked your horoscope and had everything come true or taken an online quiz that told you precisely what your favorite Disney princess means about you Well, we certainly have done so too many times, so we decided to do a little investigation into how Internet -quizzes, magazines and horoscope books seem to know us so well. 故选A项。
D
The rise of the robots has raised the possibility of a future where there is simply less wok for humans to do. To tired office workers, a world where we all have a bit more leisure time sounds rather nice. Yet what really matters is how work will be distributed across the workforce.
The recent past shows there is no reason to believe it will be evenly (均衡地) spread The length of the average working week in the UK has declined steadily from about 59 hours in the mid-19th century to 32 hours in 2009.
C. UK has taken some measures to stop the decline of working hours.
B Better training systems will be built across the world.
C. Robots contribute to uneven distribution across the workforce.
D. The number of low-paid men who work part-time has increased.
D 13. C 14. B 15. C
根据第二段的“The length of the average working week in the UK has declined steadily from about 59 hours in the mid-19th century to 32 hours in 2009. But averages hide a lot.(英国每周平均工作时间从19世纪中期的59小时稳步下降到2009年的32小时。但平均值隐藏了很多东西)”推知,平均值可能不是工作时间稳步下降的准确指标。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“On top of that, the number of low-paid men who work part-time has increased sharply. Twenty years ago, one in 20 men with low hourly wages worked part-time; today it is one in five. Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies shows this phenomenon is only happening among the low-paid. In better-paying jobs, part-time men are still fairly rare.(最重要的是,从事兼职工作的低收入男性的数量急剧增加。20年前,每20名时薪较低的男性中就有1人从事兼职工作;今天是五分之一。Institute for Fiscal Studies的分析显示,这种现象只发生在低收入人群中。在收入较高的工作中,兼职男性仍然相当罕见)”可知,我们可以从Institute for Fiscal Studies得知兼职男性仅在低收入人群中有所增加。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段的“Britain has both overemployment and underemployment problems: official data show 3.4m people in Britain want to work more hours while 3.2m want to work few hours for less pay. The underemployed are likely to be waiters or cleaners. The overemployed are most likely to be doctors or chief executives.(英国同时存在过度就业和就业不足的问题:官方数据显示,340万英国人希望延长工作时间,320万人希望工作时间更短,工资更低。未充分就业的人可能是服务员或清洁工。被过度雇佣的人最有可能是医生或首席执行官)”可知,英国存在过度就业和就业不足的问题,即就业不平衡。由此推知,导致这种结果的原因是经济中技能的需求和供给不平衡。故猜测out of sync意为“不平衡”。
通读全文并结合第一段“The rise of the robots has raised the possibility of a future where there is simply less wok for humans to do. To tired office workers, a world where we all have a bit more leisure time sounds rather nice. Yet what really matters is how work will be distributed across the workforce.(机器人的崛起带来了这样一种可能性:在未来,人类可以做的工作更少了。对于疲惫的上班族来说,一个我们都有更多休闲时间的世界听起来相当美好。然而,真正重要的是工作将如何在劳动力中分配)”和最后一段的“But short of us developing a much better system for training people quickly for the jobs economy needs, it seems likely that in the future—as now—there will be too much work for some, and too little for others.(但是,如果我们不能开发出一套更好的体系,快速培训人们适应经济需求,那么未来很可能——就像现在一样——有些人的工作太多,而另一些人的工作太少)”可知,文章主要介绍了机器人可能会导致劳动力分布不均。故选C。

One possible version:
This quote highlights the importance of determination and devotion. To me, a strong willpower is what it takes to accomplish anything difficult.
This is apparently true to Tu Youyou. Faced with the challenges to find a cure for malaria, she encountered numerous obstacles. However, she made up her mind to settle the problem instead of acknowledging defeat. After endless attempts, she led her team to discover artemisinin and win the battle against malaria, saving hundreds of thousands of people’s lives.
Overall, I’m inspired by Tu Youyou and her team. Their contribution demonstrates that in time of difficulties, we are supposed to spare no effort to win. Hopefully, we can turn “impossible” into “I’m possible”.

As the day wore on, Lily’s sandcastle kept losing its form. Despite her best efforts to mold and shape the sand, the waves and the wind seemed determined to undo her hard work. Frustration started to creep in as she watched her masterpiece crumble time and time again. Determined not to give up, Lily redoubled her efforts, trying to salvage what was left of her sandcastle. But no matter how hard she tried, the elements seemed to conspire against her. The once-perfect sandcastle now resembled a lopsided ruin, a stark reminder of her failed attempt at perfection.
With bitter smile, Lily decided to join her family. Sitting down next to Jake, she observed his carefree laughter and the joy on her parents’ faces. For the first time that day, she realized that perhaps there was more to life than striving for perfection. In that moment, Lily made a choice. She let go of her obsession with the sandcastle and joined in the fun. She laughed, played, and created sandcastles without the burden of expectations. It was in that moment that she truly began to understand the beauty of imperfection and the importance of enjoying the simple things in life.
