When Schauna Austin was 20 years old, she lost her husband in a car crash. Unable to raise a baby alone, she made a difficult decision during pregnancy — to place her baby for adoption. She gave birth to a child she named Riley, and held him for 72 hours straight. “It was perfect,” Austin said, holding her new baby. “I knew I would have him for a short time, so I made every minute count. I didn’t sleep for three days until the time came to let him go.”
Her Riley became another family’s Steven. Like most closed adoptions, a firewall went up between Austin and Steven’s new parents — no communication whatsoever. But that only lasted about a week. Adoptive mother Jennifer Schoebinger and her husband, Chris Schoebinger, said they had no interest in excluding the birth mother. “You know, you can’t have too many people loving you, right Why couldn’t he be both of ours ” Chris Schoebinger said.
So, year after year, they sent Austin piles of pictures and bound books detailing Steven’s every major and minor milestones. The Schoebingers said they did this so that when Austin and their son were ready, they could pick up right where they left off. The two reunited when Steven was 7 years old. Austin taught him how to fish, and they have kept in contact ever since. Austin felt blessed beyond words, and Steven felt he got the best of both worlds.
Steven is now 26, married, and with a baby boy of his own. Much to the delight of Austin, he named the child Riley. “I think the lesson we learned is that sometimes we create barriers where barriers don’t need to be. And when we pull down those barriers, we really find love on the other side,” Chris Schorbinger said.
That love on the other side has continued to grow. The families spend Thanksgiving as one, and will of course be getting together again in the days ahead.
4. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean
A. The less people love you, the better.
B. There are too many people who care about you.
C. Being loved by many people is desirable.
D. It’s a burden to be cared about by too many people.
5. What was Austin’s attitude towards reuniting with her son
A. Tolerant. B. Grateful. C. Uneasy. D. Angry.
6. What can we learn about the Schoebingers from the passage
A. They did not give birth to any children.
B. They contacted Austin as soon as they took Steven in.
C. They felt blessed beyond words when Austin taught Steven how to fish.
D. They believed it better to get the biological mother involved.
7. What does the author want to convey most through the passage
A. Biological parents are crucial to a child’s growth.
B. People create barriers where barriers don’t need to be.
C. Adoptive parents and biological parents should raise children together.
D. Love is found when we pull down unnecessary barriers.

A few days before New Year 1944, Patricia Krueger received a telegram from the U. S. Army. She hoped it would contain a belated birthday greeting from her husband, an army flight engineer, Charles Krueger, whom she had not heard from for 2 weeks. Instead, the message said he wasn’t coming home: His B-29 had been lost and he was later declared MIA (missing in action). Their son, John Krueger from Middleton, Wisconsin, is still in tears when he recounts this story.
Decades later, the military continues to work to bring back the remains of soldiers like Charles Krueger. The job of finding them falls to DPAA (Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency), created in 2015 after critics charged that the previous MIA search process was slow, and behind on innovations in science and technology. Between 1973 and 2014, the remains of only 1,849 missing service member s were returned to their families; in 2021, the agency accounted for the remains of 141 MIAs; according to DPAA figures.
To accelerate the work, Congress gave DPAA the authority to develop public-private partnerships with scientists and groups outside the government. “Teaming up with academic scientists introduces new ways of thinking,” says military historian Michael Dolski. “Working with partners allows us to tap into their technologies and capabilities in ways that we just can’t maintain.”
For scientists, the work is more than technically satisfying. “It’s the most rewarding aspect of my career,” says Mires, a scientist working with the agency. “In other archaeology sites I’ve worked on, the history is remote,” he says. “Here, you’re doing something not for a thing, but for a person, and all the people they touched.”
8. What was the telegram about in paragraph 1
A. A New Year dinner. B. Krueger’s disappearance.
C. A birthday greeting. D. John Krueger’s memory.
9. Why did people criticize the previous MIA search process
A. Because DPAA wants to continue the search.
B. Because it took long and lacked creativeness.
C. Because the work was stopped by the military.
D. Because 141 MIAs’ remains were found in 2021.
10. What is Michael Dolski’s attitude to the cooperation with scientists and groups
A Patient. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. A long search for MIAs. B. Achievements of DPAA.
C. Assistance from science. D. Consequences of wars.

Humans produce 300 million tons of plastic waste every year -which is roughly equivalent (相当于) to the total weight of all humans living right now. But a new discovery offers hope, and could improve the way we deal with plastic.
Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have designed a plastic that can be recycled (回收) over and over again, and turned into new materials of any color, shape, or form. They are calling it polydiketoenamine or PDK, and this new plastic can be broken apart all the way down to the molecular (分子的) level.
Brett Helms, the staff scientist at the Berkeley Lab who led the research, told ABC News that the new discovery “could significantly reduce the leakage (泄漏) of plastics into the environment.”
“That broken black watchband you threw in the rubbish could find new life as a computer keyboard if it’s made with our PDK plastics”, Helms said.
Many plastics used today were made with chemicals that make them stronger, but these chemicals can also make it more difficult to fully recycle the material or recycle them repeatedly. Over time, researchers say, even ‘recyclable’ plastics may end up in a landfill.
The Berkeley Lab says these types of chemicals had previously prevented plastic from achieving “the holy grail of recycling,” and that PDK plastic might be the answer.
“If these factories were designed to recycle or upcycle PDK and related plastics, then we would be able to more effectively remove plastic from landfills and the oceans,” Helms said.
Researchers say the next plan is to develop PDK plastics to use in cloth, building materials, and 3D printing.
The researcher’s findings are published in full in Nature Chemistry.
12. What is the clear advantage of PDK plastics over many plastics used today
A. PDK plastics are light.
B. PDK plastics are strong.
C. PDK plastics can be recycled repeatedly.
D. PDK plastics are used the most widely in the world.
13. According to Helms, a computer keyboard thrown into rubbish ________.
A. is useless B. can be recycled
C. can be used again D. is not made with PDK plastics
14. The underlined words “the holy grail” in the passage probably mean ________.
A. the final goal B. the new discovery
C. the bad condition D. serious pollution
15. What are the researchers going to do next
A. Publish their findings. B. Find new ways to use PDK plastics.
C. Sell their new discovery. D. Produce more PDK plastics.

Then minutes later she came to the back door to see if everything was all right.A big dog was standing by the pram looking at the baby.“That’s the Johnson’s dog.I’ve told them they ought to keep that great animal in their own garden. Those dogs are a bit too much like wolves.”Then Mrs.Clarke went cold.“Wolves.What have I heard about wolves ”She was sure she had heard something about an escaped wolf on the radio. She looked hard at the creature by the pram—and the more she looked the more certain she became. It wasn’t the dog from next door.Like it, but different. It was as big as the dog, but the color was greyer and it looked thinner.
At this moment the creature put its front legs on the side of the pram and looked at the sleeping baby, licking its face. The baby woke up and began to cry quietly.
Mrs.Clarke wanted to scream, but she knew it would be wrong to do that. What should she do “Inform the police,” the radio had said. But that meant leaving the garden and going to the telephone near the front door. She was sure that somehow she must get the wolf away from the prom. The she remembered the piece of meat she had bought. It was on the kitchen table.

A. Patient. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
