Carl Allamby started his car repair business at 19, working alone in a garage (汽车修理厂). Over the years it had grown into two shops, but Allamby wanted something more. At first, he thought that meant growing his business even further. So at 34, Allamby decided to go for his bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in business management. After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology (生物学) to get his degree.
Biology class reawakened Allamby’s childhood dream. He remembered the feeling of wanting to be a doctor back when he was younger.
Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby and his five sisters and brothers were raised by their stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door to door. “That didn’t pay so well,” Allamby says.
Growing up in an African American neighborhood, he faced many difficulties. His school didn’t offer advanced science classes. Even if it had, doing well in school could get him into trouble. “Sometimes you wouldn’t carry your books home because other kids would laugh at you,” Allamby says. So he gave up thoughts of becoming a doctor and chose to fix cars.
With his family’s support, Allamby decided to take science classes he’d need to become a health care worker. Becoming a doctor when he would be nearly 50 years old seemed crazy. He would instead become a nurse.
But Allamby’s chemistry teacher stopped him after class one day. “Carl,” he said, “you’re like the oldest student here. What’s your end game ”
Allamby told him how he’d like to become a doctor but it would be better to have a smaller goal.
“Why not a doctor ” the teacher asked. “You have a great intuition (直觉) for the work. You will go a long way.”
He was right. Allamby did well in all his courses. So in 2015, Allamby started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, at age 47, Carl Allamby became a doctor, and took a job in emergency (急诊) medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.

You may be attracted by pictures of animals in the wild. You might have imagined yourself taking pictures of animals that are seldom seen in the city. If you do get that chance, you may want to consider the following tips or rules.
First of all, a lot of professional photographers give respect (尊重) to these animals and the environment they are in. Just remember that you should respect the animals and the environment in case these animals bite or attack you.
Keep in mind that you are taking pictures of real, live, wild animals. A wild animal may bite to protect itself. You must be aware while taking their pictures and be gentle in all your movements. Do not feed the animals, or interact (互动) with animals that are sleeping or caring for their young.
Change the flash of your camera to natural light, so the animals will not be frightened or surprised when you start shooting. Animals do not react well when they are surprised. Be very patient. Make sure you are aware of the changes in behavior of the animal and its emotions. Be familiar with the animals’ natural habitat.
Now if those rules are clear it is time for planning. Consider the weather; some animals do not go out when it is raining while some animals love the rain. Therefore, a little research on the weather will not hurt. You should consider taking pictures after sunrise and before sunset. Now if the animal is active at night, then you should prepare to fight against not only the wild but also the darkness.
An adventure in the wild will make you very excited. However, you should be well prepared, have experts to back you up, and also a permit (许可证) for doing the photo shoot. If you do not have any of these, then maybe you should consider visiting the zoo instead.
8. What should you do to show respect to the wildlife
A. Tuning off the flash. B. Caring for their babies.
C. Feeding them whenever you want. D. Taking pictures when they are sleeping.
9. What should you consider before taking pictures with the wildlife
A. Food and water. B. Weather and time.
C. Emotions and safety. D. Place and transportation.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Most animals love being taken photos of. B. We have to go to the zoo to take photos.
C. Only experts have a permit to take photos. D. There is danger while taking photos with wild animals.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To advertise a zoo. B. To do some research.
C. To give some advice. D. To introduce some wildlife.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

My name is Arianna Traviglia and I’m a senior cultural and heritage researcher at the Centre for Cultural Heritage Technology at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, Italy.
As head of the team, I encourage the development of new technologies to maintain and protect important archaeological (考古学的) findings. Right now, I am working in the field of Pompeii, an ancient Roman city which was destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of ash and small rocks during a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. With the help of a robot, I try to carefully reconstruct (重建) the city’s 2,000-year-old broken frescoes (壁画). The project is called RePAIR.
There are thousands of fresco pieces in Pompeii, and it was nearly impossible for a human to reconstruct all the irregular pieces into big, meaningful paintings in the past. Technology now allows us to do it-the robot we use is running by artificial intelligence (AI). As it examines a piece, it searches a database for a match, and then sends the data back to its hands to fit matching pieces together, saving a lot of hours. Its soft human-like arms and hands allow it to hold and examine the easily broken pieces without damaging them. The technology is likely to allow many museums around the world to reconstruct large-scale broken frescoes or similar objects in the future.
In RePAIR, I’m studying the hyperspectral (高光谱) images of the fresco pieces in storage and comparing them with the paintings on the walls of the House of the Painters at Work, part of a building in Pompeii. By comparing the resemblances in the images, we will be able to work out whether the broken pieces were from the same wall.
I studied history and archaeology in college. Archaeology helps us understand where we come from, and technology enriches that exploration. I’m glad I’m a translator of the two worlds. My mind runs wild when I think about the exciting Roman life that we are still missing because Pompeii’s frescoes were damaged and haven’t been reconstructed.
12. What is the author mainly responsible for now
A. Repairing the damaged archaeological findings. B. Designing robots used for archaeology.
C. Discovering ancient cities hidden beneath the ground. D. Reporting on recent studies of historical ruins.
13. What is mentioned about the robot used in the project
A. It may cause further damage to artworks. B. It takes more time to the examine the artworks.
C. It doesn’t need human operators. D. It has already been widely used in museums.
14. What does the underlined word “resemblances” in Paragraph4 mean
A. Mistakes. B. Similarities. C. Damages. D. Documents.
15. How does the author find her work in RePAIR
A. Dangerous. B. Meaningful. C. Relaxing. D. Successful.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Amy is good at making pies, which got her a job at the Good Times restaurant months ago. And she was often regarded as the best worker there. Recently, she became the supervisor (主管) of the restaurant. She was kind and friendly to all the workers and the customers.
One morning, Amy was taking orders when she heard a conversation. “What you did there was great, Mason! It was hard to carry the old lady safely out of the fire. For a moment, I thought you couldn’t make it, my friend,” one man said. Then the other man replied, “Yeah, it was difficult, but that’s our job. And you were the hero today, Gordon. You carried that girl on your shoulder and her dog in your hand. It’s going to be on the newspapers tomorrow, I’m telling you.”
From their clothing and conversation, Amy knew they were firefighters. And she quickly realized that they were talking about the previous night’s fire at the old hotel on the other end of the road. Then the man named Gordon continued, “I don’t care about being in the papers. The little girl and her dog reminded me of my own daughter. She’s constantly asking for a dog, too.”
Amy was moved by the courage and sincerity of the two men. She wanted to show her appreciation for their selfless service. “How about helping pay for their meal ” she thought.
However, she wasn’t a rich girl at all. Weeks ago, her father had an accident and broke his legs. The operation cost a lot of money. And now he needed a wheelchair (轮椅) to move around so that he could live an easier life. But her family was poor and a good wheelchair wasn’t cheap. Amy was trying hard to save money for a wheelchair for her father. And she still needed a lot of money. “Well, the firefighters’ meal won’t cost too much,” Amy finally thought.
Paragraph 1:
Then she went to the cashier (收银员) and secretly paid for their meal.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The next day, the firefighters began raising (募捐) money for a wheelchair for Amy’s father.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then she went to the cashier (收银员) and secretly paid for their meal. Amy didn’t want the firefighters to know about her gesture; she just hoped that this small act of kindness would express her gratitude for their bravery and service. As the firefighters finished their meal and went to pay, the cashier informed them that someone had already taken care of it. Surprised and grateful, the firefighters looked around the restaurant to see if they could spot their mysterious benefactor, but Amy had secretly returned to her duties in the kitchen. The firefighters found the manager and insisted being told the truth.
The next day, the firefighters began raising (募捐) money for a wheelchair for Amy’s father, because they already knew who was the benefactor and what her situation was. They wanted to help too. They organized fundraisers and even set up an online donation campaign. The firefighters, inspired by Amy’s generosity, were determined to make a positive impact on her family’s life. The community’s response was overwhelming, and soon enough, they raised enough money not only for a quality wheelchair but also to cover the medical expenses for Amy’s father. The sense of unity and compassion within the community transformed a small act of kindness into a powerful force for good.

Carl Allamby started his car repair business at 19, working alone in a garage (汽车修理厂). Over the years it had grown into two shops, but Allamby wanted something more. After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology (生物学) to get his degree.
Biology class reawakened Allamby’s childhood dream He remembered the feeling of wanting to be a doctor back when he was younger.
Allamby told him how he’d like to become a doctor but it would be better to have a smaller goal.
“Why not a doctor ” the teacher asked. “You have a great intuition (直觉) for the work. You will go a long way.”

Now if those rules are clear, it is time for planning.
C To give some advice. D. To introduce some wildlife.

In RePAIR, I’m studying the hyperspectral (高光谱的) images of the fresco pieces in storage and comparing them with the paintings on the walls of the House of the Painters at Work, part of a building in Pompeii.
A. Dangerous. B. Meaningful. C. Relaxing. D. Successful.

Amy is good at making pies which got her a job at the Good Times restaurant months ago.
