One of my very earliest memories took place on October 4,1957.That was the day that Russia-which was then known as the Soviet Union-launched (发射) Sputnik, the first satellite (人造卫星) to orbit (绕轨道运行) the Earth.
I remember standing at the front yard, looking at the sky for a moving star that could be Sputnik passing over the city of Baltimore. We never did see Sputnik, but never mind. From that day onward, I focused on space. I grew up during the days when the first astronauts went into orbit, left their spaceship and took their first walks in space. I watched Apollo 11 land and Neil Armstrong become the first human to walk on the moon. I watched the landing on TV, with 250 other kids at a space camp named Camp Comet.
As I got older, I knew that I wanted to become a space reporter and a space author. Writing about space has allowed me to be present for the final launch of the space shuttle in 2011. It’s allowed me to watch the launch of a Soyuz rocket-taking NASA astronaut Scott Kelly to the International Space Station for his year in space. It’s allowed me to go to NASA’s Mission Control in Houston, Texas. It’s allowed me to see the Cassini spaceship, in Pasadena, California.
To my joy, I’ve written several books about space, including Apollo 13. That book became the basic story for the 1995 movie about the three astronauts’ exploring the moon in 1970. When I was a boy, I followed it closely, worrying about whether the astronauts would make it home. Their leader, Jim Lovell, was one of my childhood heroes. I had his picture on the wall of my bedroom. It was a great honor for me to work with him on the book when I grew up.
4. What made the author begin to pay attention to space
A Trying to watch Sputnik. B. Attending Camp Comet.
C. Hoping to walk in space. D. Seeing Apollo 11 on TV.
5. What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 3
A. His space dreams. B. His space exploration.
C. His astronaut career. D. His work as a reporter.
6. What do we know about Jim Lovell
A. He influenced the author greatly. B. He is a famous film director.
C. He is a character of Apollo 13. D. He wrote the book Apollo 8.
7. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. It’s never too young to learn. B. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
C. Rome was not built in a day. D. Interest is the best teacher.

Chinstrap penguins (帽带企鹅) in Antarctica have adapted to hard conditions by sleeping in a very unusual way.
Like other penguins, chinstrap penguins spend much of their time in the water, catching fish to eat. But when the time comes to raise their young, they return to land. Raising young penguins is a challenge. The eggs are often laid in “homes” made of small rocks to keep the eggs from the cold. One parent takes care of the home for long periods of time, while the other parent hunts for food. The parent must often keep a sharp lookout. Birds called brown skuas attack the eggs and young penguins of careless parents. Other penguins in these crowded areas may take stones from the home, putting the young in danger. But it’s hard to stay vigilant and protect a home 24 hours a day. Getting a good night’s sleep could be deadly for the young. How do chinstrap penguins solve the problem
So a group of scientists began to study them. They recorded the birds on video.Eleven days of studying the penguins discovered that the tired parents were actually sleeping. They take thousands of tiny naps (小睡) each day. Each nap lasts only about 4seconds. By taking over 10,000 naps a day,the scientists say the penguins get a daily total of about 11 hours of sleep. They do it 24/7 for several weeks at a time. They can keep going and raise their young.
It’s not clear if the naps allow the penguins to actually feel rested, or if it’s just enough to allow them to keep going. The scientists don’t know yet if the penguins sleep this way at other times of the year, or only when they’re raising their young. They also don’t know if other kinds of penguins have similar sleeping habits.
8. What can be learnt about chinstrap penguins from paragraph 2
A. They live on land most of their time.
B. They work together to raise the family.
C. They are brown skuas’ natural enemies.
D. They put their kids in the water for safety.
9. What does the underlined word “vigilant” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Warm. B. Careful. C. Brave. D. Hungry.
10. What did the scientists find about chinstrap penguins’ sleep
A. They get tired easily even if they sleep well.
B. They always go to sleep with their eyes open.
C. They sleep for so long that it affects their health.
D. They sleep often and have a short sleep each time.
11. What does the author think of the scientists’ research result
A. It’s doubtful. B. It’s surprising. C. It’s not complete. D. It’s disappointing.

A team of students, known as Solar Team Eindhoven, in the Netherlands has designed and built a powerful car that’s completely powered by the sun.
Students at Eindhoven University of Technology have been working on solar-powered(太阳能)cars for years. The car they’ve built is called Stella Terra, the first solar-powered car that can travel off-road for long distances. They designed the entire car. On top were the solar panels(电池板). Most solar panels are only about 20% efficient. That means they waste about 80% of the sunlight they get. But the Stella Terra’s solar panels are 97% efficient. They waste far less sunlight than even the best solar panels you can buy.
Like most electric cars, the Stella Terra stores energy in a battery(电池).Thanks to its powerful solar panels and its battery, when it’s sunny, the car can run for 710kilometers a day. Stella Terra has a top speed of 145 kph. The car weighs just 1,200kilograms. That’s about two-thirds the weight of a typical car.
The team recently took the car on its biggest test-1,000-kilometer test drive across Morocco. The car had to travel through forests as well as dry river-beds. It had to drive across desert sand and up steep mountain areas. It succeeded in doing all of this-and all without ever stopping at a charging station.
The team is very proud of their car, but they won’t be upset if car companies start to copy their ideas. In fact, they hope that the Stella Terra will help inspire car companies to work on similar projects. But despite their success, the students think it will take 5 to 10years before car companies are able to build a similar car and that it needs much money.
12. What is special about the Stella Terra’s solar panels
A They make the best of solar energy. B. They can be used by off-road cars.
C. They can work well on rainy days. D. They soon get plenty of solar power.
13. What can we say about the biggest test on Stella Terra
A. Time-consuming. B. Challenging. C. Inexpensive. D. Unnecessary.
14. What do the students want to do with their achievement
A. Develop more kinds of new cars. B. Sell the technology to earn money.
C. Build companies to make the car. D. Allow others to use the technology.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. Solar Battery Could Do Good to the Earth
B. Solar-Powered Car Is Already on the Way
C. Students Create Great Solar-Powered Car
D. Students Are Making Use of Solar Energy

A. Trying to watch Sputnik. B. Attending Camp Comet.
C. Hoping to walk in space. D. Seeing Apollo 11 on TV.
5. What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 3
A. His space dreams. B. His space exploration.
C. His astronaut career. D. His work as a reporter.
6. What do we know about Jim Lovell
A. He influenced the author greatly. B. He is a famous film director.
C. He is a character of Apollo 13. D. He wrote the book Apollo 8.
7. What can we learn from the author’s story

【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. C

A. They make the best of solar energy. B. They can be used by off-road cars.
C. They can work well on rainy days. D. They soon get plenty of solar power.
13. What can we say about the biggest test on Stella Terra
A. Time-consuming. B. Challenging. C. Inexpensive. D. Unnecessary.
14 What do the students want to do with their achievement
A. Develop more kinds of new cars. B. Sell the technology to earn money.
C. Build companies to make the car. D. Allow others to use the technology.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. Solar Battery Could Do Good to the Earth
B. Solar-Powered Car Is Already on the Way
C. Students Create Great Solar-Powered Car
D. Students Are Making Use of Solar Energy
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. C

One day, I was trying hard to move my shopping from the cart to my car when a woman and her two young daughters walked by. They stopped, turned around and came back to ask me if they could help me put my shopping in the car.
I was so surprised that I couldn’t say anything. She was very nice and introduced herself. She thought I looked like I could need some help. The two girls were quiet but friendly, and they were very careful of the shopping.
When the cart was empty, one of the girls said that she would return it to the store for me. Then the mother said, “You do have someone at home to help you move all this, don’t you ” I told her that I did not, but I could manage, especially since they had helped me already. She asked if I would allow her to follow me home and help me take my shopping into the house. I was again surprised and did not answer her at once. She told me that she meant me no harm, repeating that she just wanted to be of help to me.
