Beatrice De Lavalette was just 17 years old when she was seriously injured in a terrorist attack in Belgium, losing both of her legs from the knee down.
The teen spent the next several months in receiving treatment, working hard to regain her movement and independence. She appreciated her family for supporting her and comforting her by saying that life would go on during those dark days.
Her beloved horse, DeeDee, was especially helpful in her recovery. Beatrice grew up in an equestrian (马术的) family. She started riding when she was just a kid, competing in dressage(盛装舞步) by the time she was 12. When her therapist (治疗专家) brought DeeDee to the hospital parking lot one day, Beatrice knew her love of horses and riding was the way forward.
A few days later, her therapist drove her to the stables (马厩), and lifted her up onto DeeDee, beginning her challenging task of relearning how to ride. Even though her muscle strength as well as her sense of control was gone, she never submitted to her misfortune. Instead, she was eager to get back to her “real life”. Little by little, she successfully regained the strength to ride without assistance.
Her efforts paid off eventually. In April 2017, Beatrice was able to return to competitions at a show. Now, six years after the accident that almost killed her, she was selected to represent Team USA at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games!
DeeDee had retired from competing, so Beatrice rode her new horse, a Dutch warm blood named Clarc. The two of them earned fifth place in the grade II individual category and sixth in the freestyle! “My being here shows that anything is possible,” she said. “I know it’s kind of the usual thing to say, but it’s true. Just go for it.”
4. When did Beatrice get seriously injured
A. In 2014. B. In 2011. C. In 2017. D. In 2020.
5. What most probably made Beatrice determined to relearn riding
A. Her family’s support. B. Her independent spirit.
C. Her therapist’s treatment. D. Her passion for horse riding
6. What does the underlined word “submitted” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. turned in B. turned down C. gave in D. gave away
7. What can we learn from Beatrice’s story
A. No pain, no gain. B. Interest is the best teacher.
C. Encouragement is the best medicine. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. D

Do you get nervous thinking about a coming math test If yes, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb 15.
According to a University of Cambridge study, in ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when faced with a math problem, ranging from mild tension (紧张) to strong fear.
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty (流汗的) palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from picking up careers related to this subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
However, the fact is that those with math anxiety aren’t necessarily to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math,” Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知方面) disadvantaged.”
Also, there are ways to manage your stress related to math. If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re showing your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.”
A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fear before making a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University in the US.
8. Which of the following is true of students with math anxiety
A. They are not good at math. B. They will surely fail in the exam.
C. They may have physical and mental discomfort. D. They will not be allowed to do jobs related to math.
9. What is Sian Beilock’s view on math anxiety
A. You will fail if you have math anxiety.
B. You should learn to understand your feelings.
C. You must show your feelings correctly before a math exam.
D. A fast heartbeat and sweaty palms may cause math anxiety.
10. What should a student with math anxiety say to himself according to the passage
A. Though I can do it well, I’m worried. B. Though I’m worried, I can do it well.
C. It’s impossible to get rid of math anxiety. D. I’d better not get stressed before a math exam.
11. What’s the author’s purpose to write this passage
A. To introduce people’s opinions on math anxiety.
B. To show math anxiety have bad effects on students.
C. To argue math anxiety can be overcome if treated properly.
D. To prove students with math anxiety are not cognitively disadvantaged.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. C

Last week at the start of the COP28 climate conference in Dubai,134 countries signed an agreement aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (排放) from processes related to producing and consuming food.
For the first time in nearly three decades of climate conferences, which were established to handle climate change, the importance of food systems has been recognized in this way. Also, for the first time, on 10 December, COP28 will devote a day to discussing ways to reduce emissions from food and agriculture.
Many have welcomed the moves. “It’s great to finally have food on the COP menu,” says Clement Metivier, a climate expert, who is attending COP28.” There is really a growing momentum (势头) around food systems transformation to handle both the biodiversity and climate crisis.” But equally, researchers say not enough is being done to reduce emissions in one of the world’s biggest, largely untackled sources and that will involve some tough political decisions.
Making food systems more sustainable plays an important part in keeping alive the dream of limiting global warming to 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels, agreed at COP21 in Paris in 2015. Getting food from farm to food-table accounts for around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to a 2021 study in Ispra, Italy. The researchers estimated that in 2015, some 70% of these emissions came just from agriculture and land-use changes-such as cutting down trees to clear land for crops.
There are also obvious approaches to reducing some of these impacts, for example by limiting the use of fossil-fuel-hungry fertilizers (肥料), or by reducing food waste. Roughly half of food systems emissions come from food that is lost in the supply chain-before reaching the consumer-or wasted, according to a study published in March in Nature Food. Therefore, halving food loss and waste could help remove some greenhouse gas emissions from the food system.
12. What was done at the COP28 climate conference
A. It recognized the role of making food systems more sustainable.
B. It agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food systems.
C. It decided to set the world’s direction in handling climate change.
D. It spent a day finding ways to reduce emissions from food systems.
13. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the moves
A. Positive B. Negative C. Neutral D. Uninterested
14. What does the underlined word “halving” probably mean
A. Decreasing B. Causing C. Comparing D. Combining
15. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. The causes leading to global warming
B. The dream of stopping global warming.
C. The food loss and waste from farm to food table.
D. The ways to reduce effects of food systems on global warming
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

Roughly half of food systems emissions come from food that is lost in the supply chain-before reaching the consumer-or wasted, according to a study published in March in Nature Food. Therefore, halving food loss and waste could help remove some greenhouse gas emissions from the food system.

根据前文“The thought of a natural disaster can be frightening, but you can prepare yourself and your family with a few simple steps.(一想到自然灾害就会感到恐惧,但你可以通过几个简单的步骤让自己和家人做好准备)”以及后文“getting prepared for several possible situations will help you better deal with an emergency.(但为几种可能的情况做好准备将帮助你更好地应对紧急情况)”可知,本文主题是介绍几个简单的步骤让自己和家人做好对抗灾害的准备,所以E项“Though you may not know what kind of disaster will strike or when(虽然你可能不知道什么样的灾难会袭击或何时袭击)”符合本文主题,且和后文构成让步转折关系。故选E项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“Create an emergency plan for your family in case of a natural disaster. Include household information, out-of-town contacts, and school, workplace, and childcare contact information and emergency contingencies (应急预案).(为你的家庭制定一个应急计划,以防发生自然灾害。包括家庭信息、外地联系方式、学校、工作场所和儿童保育联系方式以及紧急情况)”可知,本段主题是制定一个应急计划,所以C项“Add your evacuation routes and shelter plans as well(加上你的疏散路线和避难计划)”符合本段主题,其中plan为同词复现。故选C项。
【18题详解】
分析设空可知,空处为本段小标题,根据后文“Consider the disasters for the events that are most likely to happen in your area. Make sure everyone in your family knows how to react to different disasters, including tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, fires, winter storms, and power failures. Make sure the safest spots in your home for each type of disaster.(考虑一下你所在地区最有可能发生的灾难事件。确保你家里的每个人都知道如何应对不同的灾难,包括龙卷风、飓风、洪水、火灾、冬季风暴和电力故障。确保家里最安全的地方可以应对各种灾难)”可知,本段主要讲述如何应对你所在地区最有可能发生的灾难,所以B项“Discuss how to respond to most likely disasters(讨论如何应对最可能发生的灾难)”是本段的小标题。故选B项

Mary and Becky were best friends, always playing together. Mary wanted the wooden doll in the toy shop near her home. “The one with the red dress,” she told Becky. Mary asked her mom if she could make jasmine garlands (花环) and sell them at her aunt’s market stall. With her mother’s permission, Mary invited Becky to do it together.
Early the next morning, the girls met at the jasmine bushes outside of Mary’s home. Delicate white flowers surrounded them with fresh scent. They nipped blossoms with their fingers and dropped them into a basket. Then the girls sat under a mango tree and knotted the flowers into garlands. Mary could already see herself hugging that beautiful doll.
“If we sell enough garlands, we can each get a doll,” said Mary.
Becky shook her head. “My family is low on money this week. I’ll use my money to pay for Tim’s medicine.” Tim was Becky’s little brother, who was suffering a bad cough.
Becky picked up her garlands. “My mother is expecting me. I’ll meet you at the market.”
Mary spent the afternoon selling garlands at her aunt’s market stall. By early evening, Mary had sold all her flowers. Mary was on her way home when she saw Becky. “Why are you so late ” Mary asked. “I had to watch Tim while my mother was away,” Becky said.
Mary knew Becky wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now. Mary looked at the money in her hand. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here, Keep this for the medicine.” Mary put her money into Becky’s hands.
That night, Mary cried, thinking about the doll. What if someone bought it before she’d saved up enough again

A. In 2014. B. In 2011. C. In 2017. D. In 2020.

A. turned in B. turned down C. gave in D. gave away
7. What can we learn from Beatrice’s story
A. No pain, no gain. B. Interest is the best teacher.
C. Encouragement is the best medicine. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

“Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (在认知方面) disadvantaged.”
8 Which of the following is true of students with math anxiety
