In 2015, Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century, leaving thousands without food, water and supplies. During the flood, many heroes arose, one of whom was Santosh, a young man who owned a take-out restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November, he got a call from a company called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5,000 packets of food and give them to the flood victims. He, with his partners, took the order, cooked for 14 hours and delivered them. But that night, as they sat together discussing the event of the day, they actually felt ashamed. “Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not really done anything ourselves for our own people,” said Santosh later.
He then began the groundwork for a collection to help cook more dishes. Little did he know that the November flood was just the beginning, and the real show was about to begin. The December flood affected them all. His own house got flooded and his family was trapped on the second floor. They lost phone connection and electricity. In spite of this, Santosh went back out into the flood, creating a kitchen and preparing food all by himself for the victims.
He did not sleep for four days, taking a one-hour break everyday as he kept on cooking. As word got out about this man’s effort, others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly, strangers came to help him in cooking, packing and transporting food. Up to 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen. By the time the fourth day finally came to an end, Santosh and his team had prepared 170,000 food boxes and delivered them to people in need.

C. Many Hands Make Light Work
D. Kindness Is Its Own Reward

Though fireworks (烟花) on bonfire night bring joy to many people, it is likely to be a night of fright and pain for the UK’s geese (鹅).
Research by Anglia Ruskin University has found that fireworks displays (表演) cause wild birds to suffer significant pain, and researchers have recommended that displays should not take place in areas with large wildlife populations. A study, published in the journal Conservation Physiology, is one of the first carried out into the effects of fireworks on wildlife. It found that the heart rate (率) of geese increases by 96% when they are influenced by fireworks displays.
The study involved 20 wild grey lag geese fitted with recorders to record their heart rate and body temperature, which are measures of physiological stress. Claudia Wascher, who led the research, found that the average heart rate increased from 63 to 124 beats per minute, and their average body temperature increased from 38℃ to 39℃, in the first hour of fireworks displays. It took the geese about five hours before the birds displayed normal body temperatures, with average readings returning by 5 am.
“Ours is one of the first scientific studies to examine whether fireworks disturb wildlife. There have been previous studies showing that fireworks can cause anxiety in pets, for example in dogs, but little research has been done into how animals in the wild react. We need to carry out further research to conclusively tell whether the geese are reacting to the noise or the light pollution from the fireworks, or a combination of both. Many people get a lot of enjoyment from fireworks but it’s important that we consider animals both pets and wildlife — whenever planning a display,” Wascher said.
8. What advice do researchers give according to the findings of the study
A. Geese should be protected especially at night.
B. Great attention should be paid to the UK’s geese.
C. Fireworks displays should be held without harming wildlife.
D. Fireworks displays should take place to bring joy to people.
9. Why were 20 wild grey lag geese fitted with recorders
A. To compare the heart rates between them.
B. To make them safe and sound in the wild.
C. To keep their body temperature normal.
D. To measure their physiological stress.
10. How long do the geese need to get over the effect of fireworks displays on body temperature
A. About five hours. B. About four hours.
C. About two hours. D. About one hour.
11. What may Wascher’s further research about
A. The relations between light pollution from fireworks and geese.
B. The effects of noise and light pollution from fireworks on geese.
C. Whether fireworks influence other wild animals.
D. The influence of a display on pets and wildlife.

Sam is a fourth-year student at Harvard Medical School, but poetry is still a big part of his life, now with a new teacher,Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work. Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet.
“Poetry is in every encounter(邂逅)with my patients I think healing is really in a very great way about poetry. And if we do anything when we’re with our patients,we’re really immersing(使沉浸于)ourselves in their stories, really hearing their voices. And,certainly, that’s what a poem does,”he said.
Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today:humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that,he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents(住院医生).
He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap.
Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars She said. “I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest. ”Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do,though.
Rafael said,“I was afraid of how people might judge me,actually. In the medical profession,as many people know,we must always put the emergency first. But,you know, that kind of treatment,if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer. Don’t we still have a role as healers there ”
In a poem titled“Health”,Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy. He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.
12. What do we know about Rafael Campo
A. He works as a doctor. B. He is under medical care.
C. He is a literature professor. D. He knows little about poetry.
13. What does the author try to show in Paragraph 2
A. The importance of medical training.
B. The effect of poetry in medical treatment.
C. The similarity involved in poetry and medical work.
D. The present relationship between patients and doctors.
14. What does Andrea Schwaflz think of poetry
A. It comforts patients’family.
B. It contributes to medical work.
C. It has nothing to do with doctors.
D. It keeps doctors away from patients.
15. What is Rafael Campo’s view on poetry
A. It requires a lot of spare time.
B. It can provide a useful tool for doctors.
C. It has little effect on patients’conditions.
D. It should be included in emergency treatments.

It was a cold December day. After saying goodbye to his neighbour, David, Tom set out for a run with his dog, Taz. As a professional athlete, Tom often went for training runs by himself and had done this particular route many times before, but that day something unusual happened to him.
About an hour later, Tom hit some black ice. He found himself slipping down the rock face, which became steeper(陡峭的)and steeper until suddenly he was in free fall. He fell 60 feet into the canyon(峡谷), landing on grass and dry branches. If he'd missed them, there was, no way he would have survived. He could feel his legs, so he knew he wasn't paralyzed(瘫痪的)but he was in great pain. Taz had managed to find his way back to Tom, so Tom knew there must be a way out of the canyon, but he couldn't stand or even crawl(爬). He later learned that he had broken his right leg.
Tom shouted for help, and tried to pull himself forward. Every inch was an effort. It took him five hours to go a quarter of a mile. Eventually it got so dark that he couldn't see where he was going. He decided to stay next to a river which he could drink some water from. All he had on him were his jogging clothes, a water bottle, two boxes of medicine, a bar of chocolate, and a shower cap which adventure racers often wear to prevent heat loss.
At night, the temperature dropped below freezing. Tom couldn't go to sleep or he would die, so he stayed awake lifting his head a few inches over and over. Throughout the night, Taz curled up next to him and kept him company. The next morning, he couldn't move any more. He tried to stay positive. He was sure somebody would find he was missing or hear him screaming for help. But there was nobody around.
Paragraph 1:
As time went by, Tom felt himself growing weaker and he knew he must take action.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
About three hours later, Taz returned and Tom heard an engine in the distance.

4. What inspired Santosh to help the affected people
A. A call for help. B. His cooking skills.
C. An act of kindness of a stranger. D. The encouragement from his partners.
5. What does “the real show” in the third paragraph refer to
A. Santosh’s cooking more food. B. The help and support.
C. The severer flood. D. Santosh’s family suffering.
6. Which of the following can best describe Santosh
A. Humorous and helpful. B. Selfless and caring.
C. Determined and clever. D. Kind and wise.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. A Man Cooked 170,000 Meals for the Affected
B. Major Floods Brought Challenges to People
C. Many Hands Make Light Work
D. Kindness Is Its Own Reward
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. B 7. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了在一次严重的洪灾期间,Santosh和一些好心人准备了170 000 份盒饭救援灾区的故事。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“But that night, as they sat together discussing the event of the day, they actually felt ashamed. “Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not really done anything ourselves for our own people,” said Santosh later.(但那天晚上,当他们坐在一起讨论当天发生的事情时,他们实际上感到羞愧。Santosh后来说:‘有一个人,甚至不是金奈人的人,他正在竭尽全力帮助受灾人民。我们住在这里的时候,并没有真正为自己的人民做过什么。’)”可知,一个不是金奈本地的人在竭尽全力帮助受灾人民让Santosh感到惭愧,这个陌生人的善举激励了Santosh去救助灾民。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段划线部分所在句“Little did he know that the November flood was just the beginning, and the real show was about to begin.(他一点也不知道,11月的洪水只是一个开始,the real show即将开始)”中的“Little did he know that the November flood was just the beginning”以及下一句话“The December flood affected them all. (十二月的洪水影响了他们所有人)”可知,11月份的洪水只是开始,到了12月份,洪水越来越严重,造成了严重的后果。因此划线部分the real show指的是“更严重的洪水”,与C选项“The severer flood(更严重的洪水)”意思一致。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The December flood affected them all. His own house got flooded and his family was trapped on the second floor. They lost phone connection and electricity. In spite of this, Santosh went back out into the flood, creating a kitchen and preparing food all by himself for the victims. (12月的洪水影响了他们所有人。他自己的房子被洪水淹没,他的家人被困在二楼。他们失去了电话联系和电力供应。尽管如此,Santosh还是回到了洪水中,完全靠自己建造了一个厨房并为灾民准备食物)”以及最后一段中“He did not sleep for four days, taking a one-hour break everyday as he kept on cooking. (他连续四天没有睡觉,每天休息一小时,继续做饭)”可知,尽管自己家也受灾,但是Santosh仍然去帮助其他受灾的人,坚持四天不睡觉为有需要的人准备饭,这说明他无私又有爱心。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“He did not sleep for four days, taking a one-hour break everyday as he kept on cooking. As word got out about this man’s effort, others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly, strangers came to help him in cooking, packing and transporting food. Up to 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen. By the time the fourth day finally came to an end, Santosh and his team had prepared 170,000 food boxes and delivered them to people in need.(他四天没有睡觉,每天休息一小时,继续做饭。当这个人的努力被传开后,其他人也走出来加入他的行列。从孩子到老人,陌生人都来帮他做饭、打包和运输食物。多达300名志愿者共同努力使这一切成为现实。到第四天终于结束的时候,桑托什和他的团队已经准备了17万盒食物,并把它们送到了有需要的人手中)”可知,本文主要讲述了在金奈发生一个多世纪以来最严重的洪灾期间,Santosh和一些受他影响的人准备了170000份盒饭救援灾区的故事。由此可知,A选项“A Man Cooked 170, 000 Meals for the Affected(一名男子为灾民做了17万份饭)”能够概括本文主旨,适合作本文的标题。故选A。

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B

Sam is a fourth-year student at Harvard Medical School, but poetry is still a big part of his life, now with a new teacher,Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work. Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet.
“Poetry is in every encounter(邂逅)with my patients. I think healing is really in a very great way about poetry.
Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said.
D It should be included in emergency treatments.

He attached the shower cap to Taz and signalled the direction to his house to Taz and Taz went out of the canyon. Soon Taz went back to his house and knocked at David’s door. Seeing the shower cap, David realized that Tom was in danger. He called the rescue workers and drove his car to the canyon with Taz in it.
Paragraph 2
About three hours later, Taz returned and Tom heard an engine in the distance. He was glad that someone could help him. After a short while, David came with two rescue workers, and they carried Tom out of the canyon together. Luckily, Tom was not seriously injured. He pulled through after staying in bed for two weeks. He owed his survival to his devoted dog and caring neighbour.
