Coach your favourite sports to poor children in schools. Help these children to get a structured sporting education and see their joy as they pick up new skills. If that's not enough sport for you, you can even get involved in playing with local teams in your evenings and weekends.
Description
As a volunteer sports coach, you and your group will head to 3 schools each day to coach your chosen sport or a variety of them. Sports coaching volunteering involves not just teaching the kids, but also acting as a good role model. Children are aged about 10-13 and are often new to playing sport in a structured environment. You don't need to be a top player to take part (though any champions are welcome!) —it's your advanced personality and drive that will make the biggest effects.
Which sports can I coach
Sports coaching volunteers can choose to specialize in coaching just one sport, but often we find that it is best to combine several sports for more variety. The freedom to choose between different sports makes the weeks even more diverse. Follow the links to find out about each sport.
Accommodation
The accommodation is located in a leafy suburb 10 minutes' drive from the city centre and sea front.
Sports volunteers share accommodation with childcare and teaching volunteers.
Food
All dietary requirements can be catered for as long as we know about them in advance. Coaching children in sport will make you hungry—many volunteers choose to supplement their meals with snacks bought in the local shops, just 10 minutes' walk away. There is a volunteer kitchen where participants can do any cooking they wish outside of mealtimes.
Want to go travelling afterwards
We can arrange a week-long Garden Route tour after your time on the project. Follow the link to find out more about the Garden Route Tour.
1. What can a volunteer do in the evenings
A. Drive to the supermarket. B. Pay a visit to 3 schools.
C. Match with local teams. D. Have a Garden Route tour.
2. Which is the most important as sports coaching volunteers
A. Being a top player. B. Being skilled in various sports.
C. Being able to cook well. D. Being equipped with good personalities.
3. Where is the text probably from
A. web page. B. A news magazine. C. A travel guide. D. An education paper.
After a long winter, spring is the ideal time for sightseeing and exploring London’s green spaces.
1. Explore London’s parks and gardens
Spring time is one of the perfect times of year to explore London’s parks and gardens, when the city’s plants are blooming. Go and admire the rainbow of azaleas (杜鹃花) at Richmond Park or hire a chair in St James’s Park with a view of Buckingham Palace.
2. Enjoy the entertainment at spring festivals
There are a good many festivals and events held in London throughout spring. Make the most of the cultural exhibitions at the British Library Spring Festival, the Sundance Film Festival or the London Literature Festival; head for Shakespeares Globe which hosts open-air Shakespeare performances from late April to early October.
3. Get active
Warm weather means there’s no excuse for staying indoors, so go for a walking or cycling tour of London. Alternatively, walk the Thames Walkway, which follows the river all the way from central London to the countryside; make the most of London’s Boris Bikes which are available for hire all around the city and are free of charge for the first half hour. If you’re really looking for a challenge, take part in the famous London Marathon held annually in April.
4. Take to the waters
Whether cruising (航行) along the Thames River, hiring a rowing boat in Hyde Park or riding a canal boat around Little Venice, there are lots of fun ways to get on the water in London. Held every year since 1829, the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race allows teams from England’s most famous universities to complete against each other, and draws huge crowds of watching people.
4. Which of the following can you do in London’s parks
A. You can see Buckingham Palace from St James’s Park.
B. You can use London’s Boris Bikes for free for a whole day.
C. You can watch outdoor Shakespeare performances.
D. You can enjoy the rainbow at Richmond Park.
5. What are you advised to do if you are interested in British culture
A. Row a boat in Hyde Park. B. Attend the festivals in London.
C. Visit Richmond Park. D. Walk the Thames Walkway.
6. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To compare tourist attractions in London.
B. To show the beauty of the spring in London.
C. To suggest ways to enjoy spring in London.
D. To stress the importance of exploring London.
It’s easy to observe an athlete like Tiger Woods and feel like he’s from another planet. He has won 14 major tournament(锦标赛) titles and about $122 million in prize money and ads. He also has a happy family. It seems that he is too perfect to be one of us. But Woods has more in common with you than you might think.
Woods’ parents — particularly his father — set high expectations for him when he was a child. Before Earl Woods’ death in 2006, he told Golf magazine, “My purpose in raising Tiger was not to raise a golfer. I wanted to raise a good person.”
By age two, Woods was already swinging(挥舞) a golf club. But once he entered school, Woods’ father was careful to send the message that school work came first. Woods wasn’t allowed to practice until his homework was done.
When Woods finally reached the professional tour, his father continued to expect a lot of him. “Tiger will do more than any other man in history to change the course of human. The world is just getting a taste of his power,” he said in 1996. Clearly, Earl Woods had great expectations of his son.
In this way, Tiger Woods is actually like a lot of us. Many of us feel a similar pressure to make our parents proud. When this happens, it’s easy to let that pressure overwhelm(压倒) us.
In a perfect world, we would all grow up to be Tiger Woods-like successes in our own fields. But that isn’t possible. There are many things that we can’t control in this life, despite our best efforts.
There is, however, one thing that we can do: we can try to be a “good person”, as Earl Woods asked his son to do.
7. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the first paragraph
A. The number of tournament titles Tiger Woods has won.
B. The family members of Tiger Woods.
C. The money Tiger Woods has made in prize money and ads.
D. The impression that Tiger Woods leaves on us.
8. According to the passage, which of the following statements about Tiger Woods is TRUE
A. Tiger Woods is too perfect to be one of us.
B. Tiger Woods wasn’t allowed to play golf after class.
C. Tiger Woods did very well in golf as a child.
D. Tiger Woods didn’t like playing golf when he was a child.
9 We can learn from the passage that Tiger Woods is under pressure to ____ just like many of us.
A. get high marks in the exam B. make his parents proud
C. change the course of human D. try to be a good person
10. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. Tiger Woods has a happy family
B Tiger Woods’ mother didn’t set high expectations for him
C Tiger Woods has changed the course of human
D. Tiger Woods’ father plays an important role on his road to success

I had just a very wonderful day. Although all my days were always wonderful to me, that day was completely different. There was a bulletin(公告)board saying that they would need to find volleyball players for the girls and I was so happy! I have been loving playing volleyball since my mother taught me how to play. I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to play! Then I read more what was on that bulletin board, which said that here would be an audition(试演)after three weeks! “Three weeks ” I thought about it I did know how to play volleyball but I was not much of an expert in doing it but I still wanted to try.
After that I was determined to practice volleyball every day. I practiced hard again and again each day and never got tired of doing the same practice through all the days, and finally, the day came. I was so prepared for this and hurried to the gym to the audition. When I had reached the gym, I was surprised to see that 12 or 14 girls were lining up and I guessed I was the last one to arrive. Then our audition began. Some of the girls failed to pass the audition and some passed.
There was only one position left to complete the 6 girls to join the volleyball team and suddenly I felt nervous because the person in front of me was going to take the serve(发球). Then the girl hit the ball and then the ball didn’t pass over the net! The girl hit her forehead and left, leaving me standing in the middle of the court.
Then the coach spoke, “Okay, you serve.” She handed me the ball and I caught it with my hands. As the ball was in my hands, my hands were suddenly sweating and so was I!

Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you something about how the students use the Internet. As we all know, the Internet is playing an important part in our daily life. Many students often read news at home and abroad and learn foreign languages by ourselves on the Internet. Sometimes we send e-mails to our families as well as our friends. Besides, we listen to music, enjoy films and play computer games on it. We can even do shopping without leaving our homes.
However, it has its disadvantages. Many students waste too much time playing the electronic games, which has a bad effect on their studies. What’s worse, the bad information on the Internet does great harm to them. I hope every student can make use of the Internet properly for their studies.
Yours truly

47. I then suddenly became nervous about this. “Maybe I should back off,” I told myself. And my legs began to shake. My mind went blank. For a moment I wanted to give up, but then it occurred to me that all of these practices that I’d done were all for the audition and I don’t want to be disappointed. Suddenly confidence returned to me. I practiced this for today; I was determined to do this, so I had to do this with all my fighting spirit! I had the ability to pass the audition. Then I stared at the volleyball in my hands and was ready to throw it out.
I come to a stop, taking a deep breath and began. I only glanced at the net, swung my hand and hit the ball and it... and it... and it... Yes! And it passed over the net! My coach stood up clapping her hands. All the people in the gym cheered. I felt very proud and jumped with joy. At that moment I knew my practice for three weeks did pay off. And from it I know if you have devoted yourself to something, you will get the reward.
