It all started with a post on social media. Returning home from the grocery store, then 25-year-old Simone Policano felt compelled to help the elderly in her neighbourhood to practise safer social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic. With this in mind, she reached out to her friends via the social media, inquiring about existing volunteer opportunities in the state of New York. Unexpectedly, many responded to her post, expressing their interest to volunteer as well. As a result of that outreach, one of her friends, Liam Elkind joined Policano. They decided to start an initiative called Invisible Hands Deliver.
Just two days after conceiving(想出)the idea, Policano and Elkind had a website up and running. This site allowed the elderly and other at-risk individuals to make requests for groceries and prescription medicines to be delivered to them. Volunteers left the bags of groceries outside the doors. The webpage also included a call for volunteers, which gained more than 2,000 sign-ups within the first five days.
As the pandemic began to take its toll on New York in March 2020, Invisible Hands Deliver witnessed a massive outpouring of support from like-minded individuals in the community. Besides volunteering to deliver groceries for free, New Yorkers also reached out to translate the Invisible Hands flyers into over a dozen languages, enabling the organisation to reach out to more members of the community.
Following its success in New York and New Jersey, the organisation has expanded its operations to Philadelphia and there are plans to expand to other areas of the United States. Their acts of kindness have also inspired similar networks to sprout up worldwide. Invisible Hands Deliver is also supported by other organizations.
Helmed by a team of college students and recent graduates, Invisible Hands Deliver has shown that one is never too young to make a difference and give back to the community. In a time when the pandemic has forced people apart, the young are in a prime position to take advantage of technology and bridge the gap, bringing communities together.
4. Why did Simone Policano setup “Invisible Hands Deliver”

Search engines have changed the way we use the Internet, putting vast sources of information just a few clicks away. But Harvard professor of psychology Line Daniel Wegner’s recent research proves that websites and the Internet are changing much more than technology itself. They are changing the way our memories function. Wegner’s latest study shows that when people have access to search engines, they remember fewer facts and less information because they know they can rely on “search” as a readily available shortcut.
Wegner believes the new findings show that the Internet has become part of a transactive memory source, a method by which our brains divide information, which means you don’t have to remember everything in the world yourself. You just have to remember who knows it. Now computers and technology are becoming virtual extensions of our memory.
Wegner conducted several experiments to demonstrate the phenomenon, using various forms of memory recall to test reliance on computers. In one experiment, participants demonstrated that they were more likely to think of computer terms like “Yahoo” or “Google” after being asked a set of difficult trivia questions. In another experiment, participants typed some statements into a computer and they were told the statements would be saved in specific folders. Next, they were asked to recall the statements. Finally, they were given cues to the wording and asked to name the folders where the statements were stored. The participants proved better able to recall the folder locations than the statements themselves.
Wegner admits that questions remain about whether dependence on computers will affect memories negatively: “Nobody knows now what the effects of these tools are on logical thinking.” Students who have trouble remembering distinct facts, for example, may struggle to employ those facts in critical thinking. But he believes that the situation overall is beneficial, comparing dependence on computers to dependence on a mechanical hand or other prosthetic device.
And even though we may not be using our memories to recall distinct facts, we are still using them to consider where the facts are located and how to access them. “We still have to remember things,” Wegner explains. “We’re just remembering a different range of things.” He believes his study will lead to further research into understanding computer dependence, and looks forward to tracing the extent of human interdependence with the computer world — pinpointing the “movable dividing line between us and our computers in cyber networks.”
8. From the experiment, when asked to provide facts that are not familiar to them, people tend to ________.
A. think of specific information sources B. type into computer and remember them
C. recall them from their deep memories D. link the unfamiliar facts to their experiences
9. Which one can be an example of the transactive memory
A. An actor organizes today’s schedule with his agent.
B. A student asks his teacher for today’s homework.
C. A husband relies on his wife to remember a relative’s birthday
D. A boss asks the staff about the performance of the previous month.
10. Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Computer dependence affects our thinking capacities in other distinct fields.
B. Reliance on computers does not necessarily reduce human memory.
C. Computers have helped people to understand the memory system better.
D. Researches should be done to reveal the side effect of computer dependence.
11. Which of the following can serve as the best title
A. Wegner’s Research Has Pinpointed The Dividing Line
B. Technological Networks Reshaping Our Brain Functions
C. Human’s Memory Capability Becoming Inevitably Weaker
D. Heavy Reliance On Computer For Storing More Information
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. B

In another experiment, participants typed some statements into a computer and they were told the statements would be saved in specific folders. Next, they were asked to recall the statements. Finally, they were given cues to the wording and asked to name the folders where the statements were stored. The participants proved better able to recall the folder locations than the statements themselves.(在一项实验中,参与者在被问及一系列复杂的琐事问题后,他们更有可能想到“雅虎”或“谷歌”等计算机术语。 故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Wegner believes the new findings show that the Internet has become part of a transactive memory source, a method by which our brains divide information, which means you don’t have to remember everything in the world yourself. You just have to remember who knows it.(韦格纳认为,新的发现表明,互联网已经成为交互记忆来源的一部分,这是我们的大脑划分信息的一种方法,这意味着你不必自己记住世界上的所有事情。你只要记住谁知道就行了)”可推知,C选项“丈夫依靠妻子记住亲戚的生日”是交互记忆的例子。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中““We still have to remember things,” Wegner explains. “We’re just remembering a different range of things.” He believes his study will lead to further research into understanding computer dependence, and looks forward to tracing the extent of human interdependence with the computer world — pinpointing the “movable dividing line between us and our computers in cyber networks.(韦格纳解释道:“我们仍然需要记住一些事情。我们只是记住了不同范围的事情。”他相信他的研究将导致对计算机依赖性的进一步研究,并期待追踪人类与计算机世界的相互依赖程度——确定“在网络中我们与计算机之间的可移动分界线”)”可推知,对计算机的依赖并不一定会减少人类的记忆。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Search engines have changed the way we use the Internet, putting vast sources of information just a few clicks away. Going green is good for business. Consumers are often willing to pay more for eco-friendly products than other comparable products on the market, according to market research. But not all environmental claims are created equally. “Greenwashing” is a form of misinformation often used to fascinate an enthusiastic green panies promising to be sustainable, or biodegradable sometimes fail to meet the promises they make to consumers.
Greenwashing is particularly common in the fashion industry, says Maxine Bédat, director of The New Standard Institute, a think tank(智库) focused on improving the industry’s environmental standards. Being sustainable is the latest trend and a way for the industry to attract consumers. “I think we’re at the top of green washing in the industry,” she says.”
Retailers(零售商) will mislead consumers by distracting them from a company’s larger issues. For example, a large retailer might roll out a new line of products, such as jeans, that uses less water and therefore theoretically has less of an environmental impact than the other clothes the company sells. “You think ‘Oh that sounds great,’” Bédat says. But that same company might ignore water usage in the rest of their products lines, while doing nothing to address the other ways that their production might be harming the environment.
When it comes to fashion, Bérdat says to rethink shopping habits. After all, buying a new sweater labeled “carbon neutral(碳中和)” still produces more carbon than wearing a sweater already in your closet. She notes, “The most sustainable thing you can do as a consumer is wear the things you have more.”
As more companies look to cash in on sustainable marketing, governments are beginning to take more action to safeguard consumers. In New York, The Fashion Act would require fashion companies operating in the state to obey the Paris Climate Agreement. A new law brought forth by members of the European Union would more strictly regulate environmental claims and sustainability labels slapped on products sold in Europe.
12. What is the purpose of greenwashing
A. To advocate proper use of water.
B. To introduce green ways to wash clothes.
C. To reduce the impact on environment.
D. To appeal to those eco-friendly customers.
13. What does the example in paragraph 3 present
A. A new trend in fashion. B. A new kind of product.
C. A trick of greenwashing. D. A large issue of a company.
14. What is Bérdat’s attitude towards greenwashing
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Disapproving. D. Tolerant.
15. Why did European Union put forward a new law
A. To enhance the quality of products.
B. To shelter customers from greenwashing.
C. To raise people’s awareness of going green.
D. To encourage carbon-neutral product lines.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. B

As James Dean once said, (生活有目标的人每天早上醒来都渴望面对新的一天。他们热情地追求自己的梦想,全身心地投入到他们所做的每一件事中,并且觉得他们个人正在做出改变。)”可知,作者认为应该追随自己的梦想,并引用James Dean的话来印证自己的观点;F选项“Dream as if you’ll live forever and live as if you’ll die today.(像你永远活着那样去追求梦想,也像今天即将死去那样用力活着。)”符合语境,选项中的“Dream as if you’ll live forever”与小标题“Follow your passion”以及上文中的“pursue their dreams with enthusiasm”表达意义一致。故选F。
【19题详解】
上文“People who live a life of purpose have an inner peace. They’re satisfied with what they have and who they are.(生活有目标的人内心平静。他们对自己所拥有的和自己是谁感到满意。)”指出生活有目标的人内心平静,对自己现状很满足;G选项“To them, the grass is greener on their own side of the fence.(对他们来说,自家那边的草更绿。)”说明感到满足的人觉得自己所拥有的就很好,符合语境;选项中的“them”指代上文“They”,即内心平静、对自己所拥有的和自己是谁感到满意的人。故选G。
【20题详解】
文章结构分析可知,设空处为小标题;由下文“People who live a life of purpose have a positive impact on someone else’s life. They are willing to help people in need and make their life better and happier. They gain as much satisfaction witnessing the success of others as witnessing their own.(有目标的人会对别人的生活产生积极的影响。他们愿意帮助有需要的人,使他们的生活更好、更快乐。他们看到别人的成功和看到自己的成功获得的满足感是一样多的。)”可知本段主要阐述要做一个对别人生活产生积极影响的人;A选项“Make a difference.(带来改变/影响)”符合本段主旨,适合作为小标题,选项与下文“have a positive impact on someone else’s life”表达内容一致。故选A。

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A friend is best found in adversity.
Since my school had shut down for COVID-19, I was expected to study at home. Unfortunately, I had little motivation to do any schoolwork. Whenever I sat down, my mind would wander off to other things. I had no focus but the final exams were coming up.
How could I possibly get myself prepared in one week My hands started trembling and it was hard to breathe. My heart was pounding and tears were rolling down my face. My head felt heavier and heavier, dragging my body down to the ground as I started swaying back and forth and then plummeted(坠落) towards the floor. I couldn’t see and I felt like I was slipping in and out of consciousness.
When I came to myself, I got up, took some medicine and never told anyone. I knew exactly what had happened—I had just had a panic attack. I’d battled anxiety since I was twelve, and, because of the increasing isolation due to COVID-19, my symptoms were worsening. I had experienced panic attacks before, though never as extreme as this one.
I convinced myself that if I just got some rest, things would be better in the morning. The new term was approaching and it stimulated my social anxiety. I wasn’t ready to step into a room full of people who I didn’t know. The first day of in-person class wasn’t any better, as my heart pounded every time I spoke. Every day was a new day for anxiety to have a bad effect on my physical and mental health.
I remembered when the first real panic attack struck me, I ran to the bathroom and isolated myself in a stall(小隔间) for the whole period without anyone helping me. Although I powered through it, I still felt so lonely. I even got to the point where I had to stay home from school for a week so that I felt I could focus more. However, when Monday came again, I had to go back.
The first hour or so back at school was okay, I had to come up with excuses to explain my absence and re-assess any missing work I had. But then a hurricane of anxiety came crashing into me, destroying any hope of having a good day. I ran through the bustling(熙熙攘攘的) halls to the bathroom and closed myself into the last stall, hoping this attack would pass quickly.

【答案】One possible version:
But this time something was different; this time I wasn’t alone. I saw Morgan’s shoes underneath the stall doors. A touch of embarrassment swept over me. “Are you okay ” Morgan’s soft voice floated from the stall beside her. “Y-yeah, I’m fine.” I stuttered. Then it was quiet for a moment before Morgan responded sweetly, “Tell me about your trouble, maybe I can help you.” I sat inside the stall, hesitating, while she sat outside until I was ready to come out. (83 Words)
Seeing Morgan, I forced a smile. Then she wrapped me up in a hug, whispering “It’s okay to cry, but you don’t have to do it alone”. I instantly melted. I knew I was less scared to get back to class this time, knowing she was with me, right by my side. I even started getting more comfortable talking about my issues. I still struggle with anxiety today at times. But I know I’m not alone and I don’t have to be. (87 Words)

A Wegner’s Research Has Pinpointed The Dividing Line
B. Technological Networks Reshaping Our Brain Functions
C. Human’s Memory Capability Becoming Inevitably Weaker
D. Heavy Reliance On Computer For Storing More Information
