2. Read the start of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and guess what happens next.
Alice was sitting with her sister by the river and her sister was reading a book. Alice had nothing to do. Once or twice she looked into her sister's book. “And what is a book for,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversations ” Suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran by.
There was nothing strange about that. She
heard the rabbit say, ''Oh dear!Oh dear!
I'll be late!'' and she did not think it was
strange. Then the rabbit took a watch out
of its pocket and looked at it. A rabbit with a pocket and a watch Alice got up and
ran across the field after it. She saw
it go down a large rabbit hole in the ground.
Then Alice went down after it,but never thought
about how she was going to get out again. She found that
she was falling down a very, very deep hole. It was too dark for her to see anything. She was falling for a long time. While she was falling, she was thinking about her cat, Dinah. Suddenly she landed on some dry leaves...

1. Once or twice she looked into her sister’s book.
(1) once or twice 意为“一两次,偶尔”。英语中,除了once (一次)和twice (两次)以外,表示“三次及三次以上”用“数词/many、several等+times”的结构。
例:I have only been there once or twice.
我只是偶尔到过那里。

(2) look into 意为“向……里看”。
例:Lucy likes to look into a mirror.
露西喜欢照镜子。
2. And what is a book for…
“What...for?”意为“……有什么用,为什么?”。
它相当于Why...?介词for 表示目的,回答时用动词不定式或for 短语。
例:—What is the glass for?这块玻璃是做什么用的?
—It’s for making windows.用来做窗户的。
3. There was nothing strange about that.
形容词修饰不定代词或不定副词要置于其后。
nothing为不定代词,意为“没什么”。除此之外,常见的不定代词还有:
something、anything、everything;
somebody、anybody、nobody、everybody;
someone、anyone、no one、everyone;
不定副词:
somewhere、anywhere、nowhere、everywhere。
4. Alice got up and ran across the field after it.
run across意为“跑着穿过”。across是介词,有“横跨、横穿、穿越”之意,表示从物体表面经过。
例:Go across the street,and you can find the bank on your right.
过了这条街,你会发现银行就在你的右边。
5. While she was falling,she was thinking about her cat,Dinah.
while作从属连词,意为 “当……时”,常用来引导时间状语从句。该句的主从句都用过去进行时,说明主从句的动作同时发生。例:
While I was walking in the street,I was thinking about a maths problem.
当我走在街上时,我一直在考虑一个数学问题。
