Clubs in high school are amazing because they give you opportunities to find your passions (热情), connect with others who have similar interests, and have fun! If your high school doesn’t have a club that you’re interested in, the best thing to do is start your own. Use your brain and think outside of the box!
Types of high school clubs
High school clubs usually fall into ten main categories (范畴): eight subject area clubs, hobby clubs, and charity clubs.
Subject area clubs are clubs that come from an interest in a subject area taught in school. There are eight subject area club categories: Art, Drama, Film, Science, Math, Literature, History, and Language.
Hobby clubs are clubs that come from an interest in a hobby that most likely wouldn’t be taught in high school (such as chess, video games, and animation).
Charity clubs are clubs that are connected with a specific charity with the goal of raising awareness, working for that charity, or raising money for that charity.
The category a certain club has been placed into is not important. I simply created these categories to organize this list. No one category is better than another. It’s best to create a club you’re passionate about no matter the category.

It’s no secret that some people have a harder time getting along with others than others. But why is that Why do some people seem to always be at odds with those around them
There are potential explanations for why someone might have trouble getting along with others. One reason might be that they’re simply not used to being around people. If someone is used to being alone, they might not know how to act around other people. They might not know how to start a conversation or how to keep one going.
Another reason why someone might have trouble getting along with others is that they might not be very social. Some people are just naturally quiet and shy and don’t enjoy being around large groups of people. This can make it difficult for them to get along with others because they might not know how to act in social situations.
Lastly, some people have trouble getting along with others because they might not be very empathetic (有同感的). Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. If someone isn’t very empathetic, they might not be able to understand why someone is feeling a certain way. This can make it hard for them to understand and care about them or offer any support.
While there are a few different reasons why someone might have trouble getting along with others, there are also a few different solutions. One solution is to simply try to be more understanding. If you can try to see things from the other person’s perspective (视角), it might be easier for you to get along with them.
Another solution is to try to be more social. If you’re not outgoing, it can be challenging to break out of your comfort zone and actively seek out new social experiences. Go to events, meet new people, and put yourself in new situations. The more you do this, the easier it will be for you to get along with others.
Lastly, try to be more empathetic. If you’re not very empathetic, try to practice being more understanding and supportive towards others. With time and practice, you should be able to get along with others much better.
28. What might be a reason why some people are not able to start conversations
A. They are sometimes quiet. B. They need more social skills.
C. They are usually alone. D. They are not empathetic.
29. How can someone who is not outgoing improve their ability to get along with others
A. By being more understanding. B. By avoiding social situations.
C. By developing empathy. D. By seeking new social experiences.
30. What does the text suggest about empathy
A. It is a natural character that someone was born with.
B. It is a skill that can be learned and practiced.
C. It is the most important factor in getting along with others.
D. It is the most effective way to build relationships.
31. How is the text developed
A. Problems—Reasons—Solutions. B. Problems—Effects—Reasons.
C. Reasons—Effects—Solutions. D. Effects—Solutions—Reasons.

My parents have very different parenting styles. Dad brings out the best in me. He is calm and reasonable and treats me like an adult. 32 She speaks to me as though I were still a child.
My friends and I think that our parents care too much about us. Take me for example.
33 It was a journey I’d taken with Mum before. Dad was fine with the idea of me going alone, but it took weeks of arguments before Mum agreed. In her eyes, I’m not old enough to go on the trip alone. But I’m sixteen years old!
Parents need to learn to trust us. There is no point in becoming angry, which just makes things worse. A few months ago, Mum went crazy when I told her I’d been receiving e-mails from a stranger I’d met online. Since then she hasn’t allowed me to use the Internet. 34 They use monitoring software (监控软件) to secretly watch what their teenagers are looking at online.
I understand them, but they overreact (反应过激). 35 I think what they should do is keep calm and help us find a way to deal with it.
We love the idea of being really close to our parents. 36 But part of being a teenager is feeling free to take steps down new paths and learning from our own mistakes. Our parents have to let us get on with what is just a natural stage of life.
A. Some teenagers refuse to open up to their parents. B. But she isn’t so bad as many of my friends’ parents. C. Mum, on the other hand, kept respecting my decisions. D. We also know deep down that our parents care about us most. E. Recently, I wanted to take a train to Portsmouth to see a friend. F. In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price — five dollars — was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. Five dollars could buy almost a week’s food for his family. Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything Mark Earle made through fishing went to his mother, Dora, who struggled to feed and clothe their five children.
However, he opened the shop’s weathered door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his old but clean shirt and trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try”, the shopkeeper smiled.
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the five dollars and not tell anybody. On hearing the sound of hammering (敲打) from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails (钉子) bought in large bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two bags, which he sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran the two kilometers home. Near his house stood the ancient barn (谷仓) Reuben found an old soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the bam and hid the tin in it.
It was dinner time when Reuben got home. His father was ready to serve dinner as Reuben took his place at the table. He looked at his mother and smiled. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. Her chores were never-ending. But she was happy. Her family and their well-being were her most important things.

第二节(满分25分)
Soon the summer vacation came, and no student was more delighted than Reuben. All summer long, despite chores at home, Reuben kept to his secret task. Every day he would collect nail bags. Then soon the fall arrived, and the winds from the north were cold. Reuben wandered around the streets, carefully searching for his treasures. Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of getting the object in the shop window made him continue. Finally holding the tin can, he headed for the shop, where the shopkeeper placed the parcel in Reuben’s hands.
Racing home, Reuben burst into the house, where his mother was busy in the kitchen. “Here, Mom! Here!” Reuben said loudly as he ran to her side. He placed a small box in her work-roughened hand. She unwrapped it carefully. A blue jewel box appeared. Dora lifted the lid, tears beginning to well up in her eyes. It was a beautiful brooch. Dora had never received such a beautiful gift besides her wedding ring. Speechless, she smiled and hugged her son tightly.
