Once upon a time, there was a teenage boy who was known as a fast runner in his village. He did very well in running. But he only cared about winning every race and becoming more successful.
One day, the boy took part in a running race in his village. He won the 200m, 100m and 50m races without any problems. The crowd cheered and waved at the boy. He took pride in himself and was very glad to receive great applause(掌声).
But his grandfather stepped in and challenged him to a race with two unexpected competitors—an old man and a blind girl. The boy thought it was unbelievable but accepted.
In the race, the boy ran past the finishing line first, while the old man and the blind girl were still at the starting line. With joy, he happily waved his hands at the crowd. But this time, they kept  still  . The little boy felt a bit down.
“Why are people not cheering for me like before?” he asked his grandfather.
“Start the race again with them. But this time, all of you should cross the finishing line at the same time,” the grandfather replied.
The boy was very surprised but agreed to the race.
During the second race, the boy took the hands of the old man and the blind girl and walked slowly with them to the finishing line. The crowd gave them a standing ovation(欢迎).
The boy asked his grandfather, “Why don’t the people take notice of my success? For whom are the people cheering? Is it for me, or them?”

Xian Xinghai is a very famous musician in China. He wrote many great pieces of music. In his short life, he wrote many songs.
Xian was born in 1905. Because his father had died before he was born, Xian had to move from place to place with his mother. He began learning to play the violin when he was 13 years old. At first, his violin was so cheap and of poor quality that he could not play it well. His friends laughed at him. However, Xian did not stop practising and soon showed his talent. Later, he became the first Chinese student who studied in a special music school in Paris. Before he left, Xian became the school’s best student and won several prizes for his talent.
  A  In 1935 he got back to China and helped fight against the Japanese army.  B  Although there were no pianos in Yan’an at that time, Xian still wrote some of his most important music there, including “The Yellow River Cantata”, his most famous work.  C  In May 1940, Xian Xinghai went to the Soviet Union(苏联) to write music for a documentary.  D  Life there was so hard that he got very sick. Later he died of the lung illness on October 30, 1945, aged only 40.
