The snow was extremely heavy and there was lots of ice on the ground --- not many people had ventured out that evening!
When I returned ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )to my car around 11pm, I noticed that I was the only car left. Nervously, I hopped into the car and let it warm up a bit. When I finally tried to drive away, my wheels began to spin. I was stuck! I spun and spun and wondered what to do.
All of a sudde ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n, in my rear view mirror, I saw four teen-aged boys approaching my car. As Internet users bec ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ome more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.21·世纪*教育网
In a recent st ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )udy, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experime ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nt, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory (交互记忆)"
According to Sparro ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )w, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
25. The passage begins with two questions to ______.
A. introduce the main topic B. show the author's altitude
C. describe how to u ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )se the Internet. D. explain how to store information
26. What can we learn about the first experiment
A. Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer.
B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C. The first group did not try to remember the formation.
D. The second group did not understand the information.
27. In transactive memory, people ______.
A. keep the informatio ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n in mind B. change the quantity of information
C. organize inform ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ation like a computer D. remember how to find the information
28. What is the eff ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research
A. We are using memo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ry differently. B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We need a better way to access information.

There are an extr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )emely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual (个体的) ant hardly weigh anything, but put together they weigh roughly the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles. For animals their size, ants have been astonishingly successful, largely due to their wonderful social behavior.
In colonies (群体) t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hat range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even more amazing is how they achieve this level of organization. Where we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend primarily on pheromone (外激素), chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an individual ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the colony to prepare for a conflict as a defense unit.www.21-cn-jy.com
In fact, when it co ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will readily take on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and overcoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy.
Behaving in this selfless and devoted manner, these little creatures have survived on Earth, for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a collective (集体的) intelligence greater than you would expect from its individual parts.
29. We can learn from the passage that ants are ____________. 21*cnjy*com

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in fac ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 36 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face ” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 37
If someone i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 38 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
39 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 40 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A. It’s natural t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hat there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B. Repeat th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e process till you feel sure you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
C. Everyone was new to the network once.
D. The basic rule ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E. When you send ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F. You should eit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )her ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
G. If you do ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

Dear Editor,
We took part in a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) voluntary activity organized by our school last Sunday. We gathered at the Culture Square, passing leaflets to passers-by from which they can learn what the earthquake is and how to protect themselves against the earthquake. The leaflets drew the attention of the public to the damage that an earthquake can cause and told them to take action in a right and efficient way. Some made a public speech, telling people about the best place they can hide when an earthquake occurs.
We have lear ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ned much from the voluntary activity, which offers us an opportunity to contribute to society. We told the public about the situation because we thought everyone should be concerned about each other and take responsibility for promoting a public cause.
