(Text 1)
M: Excuse me, how long can I keep the book
W: For half a month. Please make sure you return the book before it is due.
(Text 2)
M: Is the mutton almost ready
W: Yeah, almost. Can you hand me that thing
M: Uh, what thing
W: Well, the salt and the plate, please.
(Text 3)
W: That restaurant across the street is closing down.
M: Actually they’re just moving to the end of the street. It’s beside a movie theater now.
(Text 4)
M: Hello, my name is Jim Arber, and I’m calling to ask about the position advertised in Monday’s Daily Mail.
W: Yes, the position is still open. You could come over and have a talk with us.
(Text 5)
M: So, madam, how do you find this sofa?
W: It’s quite nice. I think I’d like to take it. Could you deliver it to my house
M: Of course. Delivery costs 135 dollars, so it’s 1350 in total.
(Text 6)
W: Good morning. I’m sorry I'm late.
M: What was the problem this time
W: I’m sorry. The police stopped me and I didn’t have my driving licence.
M: What I don’t believe this. Yesterday you were late because there was something wrong with the underground. The day before you were in a traffic jam.
W: I’m sorry. I’m having a bad week.
M: Yes, you are. How about coming to work by bus tomorrow
(Text 7)
M: Where do you want to go, Madam
W: Hilton Hotel, please. Brrr! It's cold, eh I'm freezing.
M: Come in. Toronto is usually cold in winter, you know. It's often very rainy, which makes the weather colder and it sometimes…
W: Well, it gets very hot in summer, doesn't it
M: Not really. It gets warm in July and August. That's the best time to visit the city. Uh, oh. Here comes the rain!
W: It's raining hard. By the way, how long does it take to reach the hotel
M: About an hour if there is no traffic jam. Would you like to listen to some light music
W: That would be lovely.
(Text 8)
M: Do you have the latest information on the hotel
W: Yes, I think so.
M: Right. Tell me something about it,
W: OK. The hotel is in Portland, a small town which is 63 kilometers away from Boston. And there is a bus stop right outside the hotel.
M: That’s good. The hotel we booked last year was near a busy road, and it was 2 kilometers from the beach. I hope this hotel isn’t like that.
W: No, it’s only about 100 meters away from the beach.
M: OK. What about the entertainment
W:There’s tennis, table tennis, volleyball and mini golf. Oh, they also organize baseball matches. It used to have KTV and keep-fit classes, but now they’re closed.
M: Oh, what a pity! What about the overall price
W: Well, it’s the high season so the price is really high for the moment, $800 one night.
M: Is it possible to be cut down to $600 We can try to bargain with the hotel manager.
W: OK. Let’s do it.
(Text 9)
W: Welcome to join us today, Mr. Shole. Your story with a female tiger has become famous on social media. Could you tell us something about it, please
M: OK. The tiger was just three months old then when I met it for the first time. Its owner asked me to watch over it. Since then the tiger and I have become inseparable.
W: Sounds interesting. Do you often play with the tiger
M: Yes. It’s not aggressive or angry at all, however, heavy steel bars are installed for it. It sleeps in an enclosure at night and sometimes I spend my nights there with it, sleeping right next to it.
W: Is the tiger big
M: Yes. The average weight of the common females of this species is 140 kilograms, but it is 40 kilograms overweight.
W: That’s quite a lot, even for tigers. How long is it
M: Three meters, and its height is one meter.
W: So how often does it eat
M: It eats twice a day. The menu includes about 6 kilograms of meat of different varieties each meal.
W: Well, such a striking friendship between a young guy and a fairly young animal is really fantastic. Thank you again for sharing your story with us tonight, Mr. Shole. And that’s all for today’s show.
(Text 10)
W: Good evening, everyone. In tonight’s program, let’s get to know an inspiring blind Chinese man named Zhang Hong. He has climbed onto the tallest peak in the world from the Nepal side. He became the first blind man in Asia and the third in the world to climb Mount Qomolangma. (18)The man completed the 8,849 meter-high Himalayan feat on May 24, 2021 along with three high altitude guides. And then he returned to the base camp three days later. Zhang was born in southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing. He lost his sight at the age of 21 due to some kind of disease. (19)He was inspired by Erik Weihenmayer, a blind American mountaineer who climbed onto the tallest peak of Qomolangma in 2001. Zhang began training under the guidance of a mountain guide friend. He was still very scared while climbing. Because he couldn’t see where he was walking, and he couldn’t find his center of gravity, so sometimes he could fall. Zhang said, “I kept thinking even though it was hard, I had to face those difficulties and dangers. This is the meaning of climbing. No matter if you’re disabled or normal, whether you have lost your eyesight or you have no legs or hands, it doesn’t matter as long as you have a strong mind. You can always complete a thing that other people say you can’t.”

第一节
Dear Tanya,
I am delighted to receive your Email telling me that you are going to pay a visit to my hometown Jingdezhen in the upcoming Spring Festival. The following are my suggestions for your two-day trip.
On the first day, after enjoying the local food I strongly recommend the Imperial Kiln Museum where archaeologists have been excavating a huge amount of porcelain relics since 1982. In the afternoon, it will be a great delight to visit the ancient kiln porcelain factory. In order to attract tourists, bands are often arranged there to play porcelain musical instruments. You can finish the day by enjoying a wonderful light show on the biggest porcelain bowl in the world in Changnanli. As for the following day, it’s definitely a wise choice for us to travel around Yaoli in Fuliang County, where you will be undoubtedly thrilled by its breathtaking natural beauty. In the evening, if time permits, we can go to the Internet-famous ceramic art avenue, Taoxichuan, to experience the rich artistic atmosphere and buy some exquisite ceramic artworks.
I wish you an enjoyable and worthwhile journey.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1: Amanda stepped onto the audition stage. Her first note was clear and loud, and as soon as she hit it, all her worries faded. She thought of her mom ’s encouragement and played perfectly throughout her performance. After everyone had auditioned, the judges called the musicians back into the room to announce who would be invited to join the All-State Band. It was Amanda that had made it in. When she got off the stage, tears of excitement came to her eyes. Then, Janet walked over to Amanda
Paragraph 2: “Congratulations! You deserve it,” Janet said, sticking out her hand. “Um, thanks. Thanks a lot! ”Amanda said, slowly shaking Janet’s hand. Many students began to applaud. “You’re a really great musician and I apologize for what I said. ”said Janet sincerely. “You are also excellent, and I’m glad to be your friend now. ”Amanda breathed in the sweet autumn air and admired the beautiful colors that the leaves were turning. She knew that not only she had gotten a post in the All-State Band, but also she had won the true friendship.景德镇市2023-2024学年上学期期末质量检测卷

If you can't trust an expert to make a good prediction, who can you trust
Try a crowd. Under the right conditions, crowds can make better predictions than the individuals in them--a crowd can even beat a single expert.
More than a hundred years ago, the scientist Francis Galton visited an English country Faithere, he came across a contest to guess the weight of an ox. Interested in mathematics, Galton gathered 800 guesses and dealt with the numbers. To his surprise, Galton found that the crowd's guess(the average)was just 1 pound different from the ox's real weight. Did Galton happen to collect a lot lucky guesses
David Kestenbaumand Jacob Goldstein, a pair of reporters, wanted to find out. One steamy summer day in 2015, they visited the “Burlington County Farm Fair” in New Jersey. There, Penelope, a black and white cow, shining with good health, greeted them. She was as tall as Goldstein's shoulder. The reporters led the cow onto a large, flat truck scale(秤). A curious crowd had gathered, but Kestenbaum and Goldstein carefully guarded the scale's digital display (数字显示), It flashed 1, 355 pounds.
Later, far from the sweet smell of warm hay, the reporters uploaded a photo of Penelope to the Planet Money website. They invited people to guess her weight, and more than 17, 000 people did. The crowd's guess was 1, 287 pounds. That was just 5 percent less than Penelope's true weight. Impressive!
Among the crowd, some called themselves cow experts, while others probably couldn't tell a cot from an ox. When Goldstein and Kestenbaum calculated the guesses only from the experts, the result wasn't any better. In fact, it was even worse:83 pounds off for the experts compared to 68 pounds for the whole crowd.
Crowds aren't just lucky. Lots of people with different bits of information and ideas can make crowds collectively smart. A crowd will always make a prediction at least as good as the typical person in it, Often a crowd will do better. If people in a crowd have reasonably good information, they can make excellent predictions. Some businesses, financial markets, and Internet searches rely on this phenomenon(现象).
If you want to predict who's going to win the big game on Saturday or when school buses will fly, ask a crowd of reasonably knowledgeable people instead of a single expert. Just make sure the crowd has people who know different things and have different ways of thinking. Without a diverse crowd, predictions can go badly.
28. Why is the example of Francis Galton mentioned in the passage
A. To explain why crowds can't make an accurate prediction.
B. To state Francis Galton happened to collect many lucky guesses.
C. To show how to predict an ox's weight.
D. To prove crowds can make a better prediction.
29. How did the reporters prove the advantage of prediction made by crowds over experts
A. By conducting a series of research. B. By explaining the theories involved.
C. By making comparisons. D. By doing experiments.
30. Who may give a better prediction according to the passage
A. An expert who has a different way of thinking from others.
B. A crowd of people with different backgrounds and knowledge.
C. A single expert who is knowledgeable.
D. A crowd of experts who have the same way of thinking.
31. What can we learn from this passage
A. Two heads are better than one.
B. You never know what you can do till you try.
C. Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth.
D. Seek the truth from facts
D
Although-London's red telephone boxes may not get as much use these days, they are one of the city's most recognizable features-but some could soon have a new purpose.
Recently, a developer wants to turn two run-down telephone boxes on Coventry Street in London's West End into vending machines(自动售货机)that will operate 24/7. These telephone boxes will be filled with snacks for sale.
Application for this interesting redevelopment has been submitted by Nuriyeh Popalzi as part of the Young Entrepreneur Support Scheme (VESS), with plans currently in the consulting stage. If successful, this would mean the boxes on Coventry Street, which have sadly been subject to disrepair, get a fresh red lick(一点)of paint and have their doors removed to create the machines.
In her application, Nuriyeh Popalzi said, “Both telephone boxes are out of service and kept in poor condition of maintenance, creating an unpleasant site in one of the most historic and touristic parts of London, "she added. “These red telephone boxes are considered a key part of London not only for the Londoners but also for the tourists from all over the world. For decades, these red telephone boxes have been a symbol of London and in fact a symbol for the whole of Great Britain. "
Popalzi believes the transformed boxes will have a positive effect on the community, much like other telephone boxes that have been turned into libraries. All profits made by the machines will go to charity, meaning happiness can be spread in multiple ways.
Before long some Londoners' next afternoon pick-me-up could come from one of London's iconic red boxes. However, there should be a speed dial(快速拨号)option-we know Londoners are always in a rush, after all.

A. To sell snacks. B. To raise money.
C. To store snacks. D. To serve as libraries.

B. The two telephone boxes' color will be changed.
C. Popalzi's idea has drawn many Londoners' attention.

34. How will the two transformed boxes have a positive effect
A. They will offer a great discount. B. They will make a difference to charity.
C. They will provide the delivery service. D. They will help attract more tourists.
35. Where does the text probably come from
A.A book review. B. A science report. C.A newspaper. D.A travel brochure.

That afternoon, Mr, Johnson, the school band director, stood up to make an announcement. “Kids. ”he said, “today Janet Jacobs would like to challenge Amanda Foster for first chair. ”Amanda wasn't worried; Janet had challenged her four times and nothing had come of it. However, Amanda hit the note wrong, and her sound was not good at all. Janet, on the other hand, played perfectly. Amanda was shameful. It was one of the band pieces she should have known. Janet was given first chair. and Amanda left the band room with tears. She went through the rest of her classes in a haze.
“We're leaving for the audition in one hour!"said Mr. Foster the next morning. "I don't feel well. Maybe next year, "said Amanda. Then she burst into tears and ran from the room.
Her mom followed her into her bedroom and sat on the foot of her bed. “Oh. Amanda. First of all, I've heard you play your song, and you're not going to shame yourself. Bravery isn't about not being scared—it means doing something despite the fact that you're afraid. And if you go
out there and do your best, we'll be proud of you, no matter what the outcome. "Amanda's
mom smiled. “So what do you say Do we have an audition to go to ”
“Yeah, I guess, ”Amanda replied. “Good girl! Get dressed now. We still have half an hour. ” Amanda sat outside the audition room nervously grasping her flute(笛子). Finally, they called her name.
