一、阅读理解
A
[2024云南曲靖开学考] I really enjoy autumn’s display of golden leaves, but as a bird lover in the UK, the real thrill at this time of year is the arrival of migratory birds (候鸟) from Iceland, Siberia and Canada.
The UK is lucky — in winter; we get a wide variety of birds heading here to escape tough conditions further north. And in summer, we are visited by birds from Africa such as swallows and cuckoos (杜鹃) that make the most of our long, light days for having their young. While the long flights are undoubtedly impressive, there are some species that fly considerably further, spending much of their lives at the extreme ends of Earth.
The Arctic tern (北极燕鸥) has the world’s longest migration: a round-trip of 35,000 kilometers annually. Arctic terns break up their long journeys though, so if you are looking for the world’s longest non-stop flyer, that record is held by the bar-tailed godwit (斑尾塍鹬).
So why do birds migrate? It makes sense to head somewhere warmer for winter, but it can be hard to explain why some African species then return to Europe for summer when food is still plentiful in their wintering grounds. It could be because there is less competition here, or because our longer, cooler days are useful. Some trips are even harder to explain. For example, the ancient murrelet (海雀) flies almost 8,000 kilometers from Canada to China, despite very similar conditions.
Although there is still much we don’t know, we do know that our changing climate is making birds lose the benefits of such long journeys. Arctic terns survive on sand eels (沙鳗) when they arrive in the Shetland Islands. In 2004, the UK saw a sudden drop in sand eels due to climate change. The shetland Islands usually hosts more than 20,000 pairs of Arctic terns, but didn’t see a single chick survive to adulthood that summer. I have so much admiration for the world’s furthest fliers, and I just hope they can cling on and that we can come to fully understand them.
  本文是说明文。候鸟随季节变化而迁徙的原因各不相同,有些原因人类至今也没有弄清楚。

[2024江苏10月大联考]Elon Musk has offered a prize of $100m for the best carbon capture proposal. I can save his committee a lot of time. The money should go to Peter Wohlleben, whose book TheHiddenLifeofTrees was the most encouraging blockbuster (一鸣惊人的事物) of 2015.Wohlleben’s idea is this: do nothing about trees. Stop fiddling (乱作为) with them, thinking that we can deal with climate change better than nature. If we fiddle, our Romes will burn.
TheHiddenLifeofTrees argued that trees are social. It shows that they can be our saviours. But it’s terribly hard to let ourselves be saved. We think we can be the authors of our salvation (拯救). Of course, there are things we could and should be doing, but in terms of forestry practice, often what’s billed as part of the solution is part of the problem.
Anyone who has planted a tree in their garden knows that it has a far-reaching effect — it makes your garden cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Forests cool by transpiring (蒸发). If there’s no water, there’s no cooling. Drought can kill trees fast, but trees have many ways of dealing with it, and Wohlleben sets them out. As a species, we have survived many climatic changes by changing our behaviour— and that’s how trees survive, too. Trees learn from their past harms and produce younger ones programmed with those lessons. Mother trees regulate their children’s growth by changing the rate at which they drip-feed them with sugar solution through root networks.
Deciduous (落叶的) forests in particular remove greenhouse gases effectively as long as they live. Cut them down and burn them and you’re releasing carbon dioxide not just from the wood, but also from the forest floor. Deciduous trees are not "harvest-ready" at 200 years: They are teenagers. We must interrogate comforting expressions such as "renewable energy", and learn the real cost of our toilet paper.
If we don’t learn to do nothing about trees, they will eventually be alone anyway — but without us. Wohlleben brilliantly and readably shows us how urgent and how hard it is to do nothing.

[2023贵州贵阳摸底] Dandelion (蒲公英) seeds can travel for miles before finally floating down and settling somewhere new. Researchers recently discovered how the plants decide to spread. "We noticed that the dandelion parachute (降落伞) is closed in foggy mornings but then open again when the sun is up during the day," according to Naomi Nakayama, a researcher of bioengineering. "The dandelion uses a bunch of hairs to improve air drag and aid its flight. Unlike insects or birds, they don’t need any energy input to fly a long distance — even hundreds of kilometers — they simply catch the wind."
Researchers discovered the parachutes open and close using what they say is like an actuator (触动器), a device that changes energy and signals into movement. But this actuator doesn’t use any energy. The middle of the dandelion’s parachute is able to sense the amount of humidity (湿度) by absorbing water molecules (分子) in the air. Using signals about humidity information, they either open their parachutes and fly off or they close them and stay where they are.
"The center of the parachute changes its shape, moving the hairs altogether in unison(一起)," Nakayama says. "It’s basically a sponge made of no-longer living plant cells, which are arranged in a tube empty inside. The inner side and the outer side swell with water to different degrees, and that drives the movement."
Knowing what causes dandelions to spread their seeds could help scientists learn how they deal with climate change. They say understanding the response could help researchers design new soft robots, which are those made from flexible materials that imitate soft bodies. "How plants move their body parts are different from animals and a simple, localized expansion could be enough to move arms," Nakayama says. "Movement of a few arms has been achieved, but this is the first of many arm actuators. It is simple in design, so there is a lot of space for biomimicry (仿生学)."

[2024广东南粤名校联考]When Sarah Lee was a child, she loved to watch the birds in her backyard and wondered how they could fly so effortlessly. As she grew older, Sarah became interested in the science behind flight, so she decided to study aerospace engineering in college.
After graduation, Sarah began working for a company that designed airplanes. However, she soon realized that the traditional methods of airplane design were not always efficient or sustainable. She began to wonder if there was a way to design airplanes that mimicked the natural world.
Sarah started to study birds and insects, observing how they were able to fly with such grace and efficiency. She asked questions like: How do birds adjust their wings to different wind conditions? How do insects use their wings to hover in place?
With this knowledge, Sarah began to design airplanes that incorporated biomimicry, or the imitation of nature. She created wings that could adjust their shape based on wind conditions, just like a bird’s wings. She also designed planes that could hover in place, like a dragonfly.
Sarah’s designs were a hit. Her company began to produce airplanes that were more efficient and sustainable than ever before. They used less fuel and emitted fewer pollutants into the air.
Sarah now travels around the world, giving talks on the benefits of biomimicry in engineering."Nature has been solving problems for millions of years," she says."We can learn a lot from the natural world if we just take the time to observe and ask questions."

C
[2024辽宁沈阳市郊联体考试]There is no lack of excellent flying builders — such as bees — in nature. To build a nest, these insects team up to collect the needed materials and follow the specification of a complex design that ends up being many times their size. This building process takes months, even longer than their average lifespan, during which the insects must adjust as they go.
Inspired by these insect building teams, Mirko Kovac, a roboticist, developed a way to improve 3D printing for the construction industry. A typical 3D printer is limited by the range of its nozzle (喷嘴), and can only make objects smaller than itself. Besides, 3D construction robotics currently focuses mostly on ground-based robots. And large-scale systems that need to be connected to a power supply are limited in places where they can be laid out.
Dr Kovac’s team has removed these limitations by giving the printer nozzle wings. Dr Kovac describes a system of flying robots that is composed of two types of drones:BuilDrones and ScanDrones.
First, a builder flies over its area of operation and begins to release a jet of the building material. Once the builder robot has sprayed a layer of material, the scanner robot flies over and inspects the progress. The scanner then calculates the next layer that the builder should make, while also correcting any errors that might have been discovered in what has already been built. At this point, people can also step in the process when necessary.
The researchers tested the system’s capabilities by building both a large cylinder (圆柱体)(72 layers and 2 meters tall) made of a lightweight material, and a small one (28 layers, 18 cm) made of a high-density mixture. The tasks were not simple. Making circles on top of other circles would not have worked, because the perfect alignment required would have been impractical to achieve. As a result, Dr Kovac’s robots passed the test with flying colors — the cylinders were built to within 5 mm of the width and height of the planned structures, which is of sufficient quality, as far as British building requirements are concerned.
Because the flying robots can, in theory, operate anywhere, they could fix things in dangerous or otherwise inaccessible places.

The robot, which remains work in progress, waved to the audience and raised its knees.
Tesla is adopting its autonomous car technology to give Optimus abilities such as walking safely or working on the factory floor. "The robot can actually do a lot more than we just showed you," said Musk. "Tesla is designing Optimus robots to be produced at high rates, pushing the price perhaps lower than $20,000," Musk added. "This means a future of abundance, a future where there is no poverty and where you can have what you want in terms of products and services. It really is a fundamental transformation of civilization as we know it."
Musk, who once warned of artificial intelligence being a threat to mankind, said that Tesla wants to make sure the transition(过渡) to a society in which robots do the work and people gain the benefits is a safe one. "We always want to be careful we don’t go down the Terminator path," he cautioned, referring to a famous film about a killer robot and noting that Tesla is building in safeguards including a stop button that can’t be changed without permission.
Musk said Tesla will begin testing Optimus on the factory floor, letting the robots do simple tasks like carrying parts, and that the general public should be able to purchase the robots in three to five years. He also added, "Tesla, as a publicly traded company, will be held accountable by its shareholders if they think it isn’t being socially responsible. It’s very important that I can’t just do what I want. Tesla’s structure is ideal for that."

[科技创新/2024湖北武汉外国语诊断]Cars powered by batteries made from seawater and planes fueled by ammonia(氨) will become common over the next 10 years, Bill David, a professor of materials chemistry has predicted.
Most batteries for electric cars and smartphones are powered by lithium(锂), which has to be mined, but David thinks that they will be overtaken by batteries made from sodium(钠), which can be obtained from seawater and salt. The future of air travel could also be greener thanks to biofuels.
David said, "We are developing an ammonia-based plane. In principle, we can improve on an Airbus A320 or a Boeing 787 and essentially replace jet fuel with ammonia."
David said that batteries could, at first, combine sodium and lithium, as sodium is not quite as powerful as lithium but is much more sufficient. "It’s not quite perfect in terms of performance, so we need both," David said."Sodium is on the way up and most electric cars have had a combination of lithium and sodium batteries in them. My estimate is that by 2040 I would not be surprised if there were ten times more sodium batteries than lithium ones, maybe even 100 times."
The first generation of mass-produced sodium batteries has been used for an electric car for the first time. Sodium will not be the final answer to eco-friendly air travel, however, which is why David’s team is looking into the use of ammonia. Some companies are looking into whether jet fuel can be replaced with hydrogen, but David sees ammonia more sustainable. He said, "If you do a sum, then at 500mph you get the same amount of power as jet fuel, but just 40 per cent of the range. However, even though, a Boeing 787 could still go from London to New York."
However, a report from the Royal Society on net-zero aviation, which David co-wrote, says that replacing jet fuel with biofuels would require half of the agricultural land in the UK.
  材料化学专家Bill David预测,未来10年由海水制成的钠电池驱动的汽车和以氨为燃料的飞机将变得普遍。由于生物燃料的使用,未来的航空旅行也会更加环保。
1. What is an advantage of sodium batteries?
A. Their performance is easy to improve.
B. Their raw material is easily accessible.
C. They are widely applied to various vehicles.
D. They are more powerful than other batteries.
解析 B 细节理解题。由第二段中的"David thinks that they will be overtaken by batteries made from sodium(钠), which can be obtained from seawater and salt"可知,David认为锂电池将被钠制成的电池取代,钠可以从海水和盐中获得。由此可知,电池的原材料钠可以轻松获得,故选B。
2. According to David, which is ideal for future electric cars?
A. The lithium battery. B. The sodium battery.
C. Hydrogen fuel. D. Ammonia fuel.
解析 B 细节理解题。由第四段中的"My estimate is that by 2040...maybe even 100 times"可知,到2040年,如果钠电池的数量是锂电池的10倍,甚至可能是100倍,David不会感到惊讶。由此可知,David认为未来电动汽车的理想选择是钠电池,故选B。
3. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Hydrogen casts a light on the jet fuel market.
B. Electric car makers favor sodium batteries.
C. Ammonia features sustainability and practicability.
D. Companies have mass-produced recycled batteries.
解析 C 段落大意题。结合第五段内容,尤其是本段中的"David sees ammonia more sustainable""If you do a sum, then at 500mph...a Boeing 787 could still go from London to New York"可知,该段主要讲述氨的可持续性和实用性特点,故选C。
4. What’s David’s attitude to replacing jet fuel with biofuels?
A. Tolerant. B. Unclear.
C. Cautious. D. Approving.

One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Suleyman found a five-year-old girl shivering with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.
During the war, it was impossible to find the child’s family, so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.
For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage, the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.

Take a battlefield tour of WWⅠ in 1917
On Labor Day, I watched a British movie named 1917.As indicated by the title, 1917 is set in the disorder and confusion of World War Ⅰ. 1 , separating British and German troops.
Two British young soldiers, Blake and Schofield, are awakened from what could have only been a few minutes of sleep. 2 . A few miles away, another company (连队) including Blake’s brother, has planned an attack in a few hours, designed to push the Germans back even farther following a recent retreat (撤退). However, recent intelligence suggests that the retreat is a trick that will land them in an ambush (埋伏) that will cost thousands of British lives. 3 , so Blake and Schofield are ordered to head on foot to that company in order to call off the attack before it can start, a journey that will force them to travel through the enemy territory. They witness carnage (大屠杀), and one of them happens to stick his hand into the open wound of a dead body.
The movie is not only known for its unbroken shot (连续镜头) but also for its adaptation of a true story from its director Sam Mendes’ grandfather. [2023四川成都二诊]Chinese ink paintings were once on the edge of being forgotten — at least according to a paper of Li Xiaoshan,a postgraduate art student.
At the time, many Chinese painting professionals passed away without finding younger artists to fill their shoes. Young artists were left on their own to find breakthroughs and define themselves as artists. While extremely exaggerated(夸张),Li’s comment sent shock waves through the Chinese painting community.Since then, many experimental painters have taken to their studios in China, creating many astonishing and inspirational ink paintings using new methods and concepts, marking an important step for the development of contemporary Chinese painting.
Shao Ge is a representative of this new form. Born to an ordinary family in Beijing in 1962, Shao was keen on traditional Chinese painting. As a child, he spent much of his time staring at the ink masterpieces in the Palace Museum. There was an elder neighbor, who was good at Chinese painting and calligraphy. In his spare time, the kind elder talked about traditional Chinese culture to young Shao. Some years later, Shao decided to study painting after graduating from high school. After graduating from the Beijing Arts and Crafts School in 1978, Shao was sent to work at a small craft factory. Before long, the factory went bankrupt. Shao later passed an exam and became a painter for Rong Bao Zhai,a famous Chinese art gallery established in 1672.This career jump allowed Shao to enter a lifetime of ink painting.
"At first,I just drew everything — landscapes, figures, flowers, birds, and fish," Shao said."But I soon found sticking to traditional thoughts and skills of Chinese painting would be a brake on my development as a professional painter. For this reason,I decided to innovate my own style."

[2024江西婺源天佑中学期中] Recently, the topic "Chinese people can eat such a sweet melon but can’t do without this grandma" has topped the hot search list. The grandma is Wu Mingzhu called "Queen of Chinese Melon", a melon-growing expert and academician. Among Wu Mingzhu’s classmates was Yuan Longping, who later became the "father of hybrid rice".
Wu Mingzhu was born in 1930 into a scholarly family in Wuhan City. After her graduation in 1953, she was assigned to work in the Rural Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in Beijing. Wu was unsatisfied. "What I studied was the science of fruit and vegetables. I wanted to work in the field, not in an office," said Wu.
In 1955, Wu voluntarily went to work in Shanshan County, Turpan Basin, where working conditions were quite harsh. She found that the Hami melon, a rare specialty fruit which was once common in the area, was in danger of becoming extinct if not properly cultivated. Wu spent a full three years visiting over 300 production teams, picking out 44 varieties. She overcame varieties of setbacks to produce particularly delicious melons in a scientific way, winning over the local farmers accustomed to folk cultivation methods. Then the promotion area covered 80 percent of Xinjiang’s main commodity areas, and a group of melon-rich villages emerged.
In 1973, in order to speed up the breeding process and shorten the cultivation cycle, Wu decided to go to Hainan for melon breeding. She wanted to develop Hainan as a pilot area to improve the speed and efficiency of breeding, so that the south area of China could also grow melons. After numerous difficulties, finally in the 80s, the melon variety selected by Wu succeeded.
For more than 60 years, Wu Mingzhu has cultivated more than 30 varieties, dedicated the sweetness of melons to the people, and promoted the melon series with Chinese characteristics and a complete breeding innovation system to the world. When first hearing her nickname "a pearl in the Turpan Basin", Wu said, "In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones."

[2023福建厦门三模]Dressed in a shiny metallic suit, Katia Krafft’s small frame is dwarfed(使显得矮小) by the red curtain of molten rock that bursts from the ground before her. The dramatic moment was captured (捕捉) in a photo taken atop Iceland’s Krafla volcano in 1984, during the final breathing of a multi-year-long eruption. Looking at the image, one can almost feel the volcano’s heat, hear its roar, and sense Krafft’s heart pounding as the volcanologist does what she loves most: bearing witness to our planet’s strong anger.
Katia Krafft was a fearless pioneer in volcanology, studying the explosive peaks at a time when there were few women in the field. She was born in the Rhine valley of northeast France in 1942, during the height of World War Ⅱ. The chaotic human world drove both Katia and her husband, Maurice Krafft, also a volcanologist, to seek comfort in nature. The moment a volcano exploded, they dropped everything to analyze and capture the beauty and mystery of each event.
The Kraffts used their videos of explosive eruptions to explain the complex risks and uncertainties of these disasters. It changed our ability to communicate volcano science. Their videos are credited as one of the primary reasons that officials in the Philippines took the warning signs of Mount Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991 seriously. Yet the Kraffs didn’t live to see that eruption. The couple died less than two weeks earlier in Japan during a monstrous eruption, which claimed 41 other lives.
Katia’s impact on volcanology has reached far beyond her death and has encouraged many young women to study our restless planet."Katia Krafft is definitely the reason why I’m doing this job," says Carla Tiraboschi, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minster, Germany. Tiraboschi first saw Katia in a documentary when she was just six or seven years old and has been crazy about volcanoes ever since. When she was in high school, she began to grow slowly. Years later in 2013, Aly reached 6 feet 9 inches tall with a women’s 16 shoe size.
Normal activities like shopping for clothes and shoes can be stressful for Aly because she struggles to find anything that fits properly on her. Most items that are sold as dresses end up becoming shirts for her, and it’s a miracle if a store ever has a pair of pants long enough for her legs. But, through all of these struggles, Aly has learned to embrace the body she’s been given and to walk with confidence.
Loving her height wasn’t always an easy thing to do. As a young girl, Aly was teased for her height and called "monster". This caused a lot of pain and struggle as she grew up and wrestled with how different she was from everyone around her. Aly’s boyfriend, Sean Webb, is 6 feet 4 inches tall and says they definitely get a lot of attention when they go out together and that it’s all good attention.

[2024广东佛山开学考]For me, a large part of growing from a girl into a woman was developing a hatred for my body. When I was a kid, I didn’t think about my body all that much. My attitudes towards my body changed around middle school when people were talking about staying "in shape" and going on diets. And thus I started to internalize the harmful standard that we have to look good all the time.
Looks are given far too much importance in our society. Women are supposed to look perfect all the time. We’re supposed to idolize (崇拜) celebrities who have far more time and money to spend on their appearance than the average person. It’s simply not attainable.
I love the idea of body positivity. I firmly believe that everyone should try to love themselves as much as possible. However, it’s almost impossible to love every part of your body all the time. Personally, I could never achieve that. It’s a good idea to promote body positivity in theory, but it also allows us to beat ourselves up because we don’t love ourselves all the time.
Body neutrality (中立) is a much more attainable goal. Body neutrality promotes the idea that your body is simply your body instead of thinking something is good or bad. This mentality is easier to achieve, and it doesn’t force you to try to love things you don’t love. We don’t need to love every part of our body — it’s just a body.
Another way to view your body is to be thankful for everything that it does for you rather than how it looks. For example, I am grateful that my body allows me to go skiing because I love skiing. This shift in mentality can be helpful because it focuses on your body’s ability to do things you love, instead of your appearance.
Ultimately, the ideal mentality is loving every part of your body all the time. However, the more realistic alternative is accepting your body for what it is and what it does for you. Love can come after, but neutrality is a good place to start.
  作者大概在中学时改变了对外表的态度,建议我们爱自己身体的每一部分,接纳自己的身体和它带给我们的一切。
1.Why did the author change her attitude towards appearance around middle school?
A. Because she was influenced by others.
B. Because she began to dislike her body.
C. Because she thought it important to stay in shape.
D. Because she failed to meet her school’s standards.
解析 A 细节理解题。由第一段中的"My attitudes towards my body changed around middle school when people were talking about staying ‘in shape’ and going on diets. And thus I started to internalize the harmful standard that we have to look good all the time"可知,当别人开始谈论保持"身材"和节食的时候,作者对自己身体的态度发生改变,由此可知作者是受了别人的影响,故选A。
2.What is the author’s attitude towards body positivity?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
C. Prejudiced. D. Indifferent.

However, it’s almost impossible to love every part of your body all the time. Personally, I could never achieve that. 3.What does body neutrality promote?
A. Pursuing perfection in terms of body image.
B. Trying to change your appearance constantly.
C. Loving every part of your body unconditionally.
D. Accepting your body as it is without judgment.

We don’t need to love every part of our body — it’s just a body"可知,身体中立提倡的是客观地看待身体,也就是不加评判地接纳你的身体,故选D。
4.What is the suggested mentality towards your body?
A. Ignoring its limitations.
B. Focusing on appearance.
C. Being grateful for its capabilities.
D. Being critical of its imperfections.
解析 C 细节理解题。由最后一段"Ultimately, the ideal mentality is loving every part of your body all the time. However, the more realistic alternative is accepting your body for what it is and what it does for you. Love can come after, but neutrality is a good place to start"可知,本题选C。
