Just about 50 years ago, needing money to support my family — my novels weren’t best-sellers — I had the idea of taking the longest train trip imaginable and writing a travel book about it. The trip was improvisational (即兴的). I didn’t have a credit card. I had no idea where I’d be staying nor how long this trip would take. And I’d never written a travel book before. I hoped my trip wouldn’t suffer a lot, though it was obviously a leap in the dark.
I set off with one small bag containing clothes, a map of Asia, a travel guidebook and some travelers’ cheques. I was often inconvenienced, sometimes threatened, now and then disturbed for bribes (贿赂), occasionally laid up with food poisoning — all this vivid detail for my narrative (叙述).
What I repeated in the more than four-month trip was the pleasure of the sleeping car. Writing on board the Khyber Mail to Lahore in Pakistan, “The romance associated with the sleeping car comes from the fact that it is extremely private, combining the best features of a cupboard with forward movement. Whatever drama is being shown in this moving bedroom is heightened by the landscape passing the window...” A train is a carrier that allows residence.
I wrote The Great Railway Bazaar on my return in 1974, and it appeared to good reviews and quick sales. That’s the past. Nothing is the same. All travel is time-related. All such trips are unique and unrepeatable. It’s not just that the steam trains of Asia are gone, but much of the peace and order is gone. Who’d risk an Iranian train now or take a bus through Afghanistan
But I’ve been surprised by some of the more recent developments in travel. I rode on Chinese trains for a year and wrote Riding the Iron Rooster, but now China has much cleaner and swifter trains and modernized destinations. A traveler today could take the same trip I took in 1986-87 and produce a completely different book.
All travel books are dated. That’s their fault that they’re outdated, and it’s their virtue that they preserve something of the past that would otherwise be lost.
24. What happened at the beginning of the author’s trip to Asia
A. He made full preparations for the trip.
B. He had expected the journey to be rough.
C. He organized the trip with his family’s support.
D. He started the trip out of his passion for traveling.
25. Why did the author repeatedly recall the sleeping car
A. For its long distance. B. For its full equipment.
C. For its reassuring privacy. D. For its romantic scenery.
26. What does the underlined sentence “Nothing is the same” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. He couldn’t write another bestseller. B. Train trip was no longer popular.
C. The landscape in Asia was gone. D. Transportation and travel had changed a lot.
27. What does the passage mainly focuses on
A. Reflecting on the evolving nature of rail travel.
B. Recalling an unrepeatable journey to China.
C. Offering advice on preparing for a train trip.
D. Demonstrating the features of travel books.

Almost all of us have a friend, who can eat anything and eat as much as an elephant yet never gain weight. So why can your friend get away with eating what he/she wants and not get fat
First and foremost, it has something to do with Genetics (基因学): high basal metabolic rate (BMR) (高基础代谢率). When we are resting, our body spends some energy for basic activities like breathing and pumping of the heart. So those with high BMR burn more calories at rest as compared to those who have low BMR. As a result, these individuals don’t put on weight despite eating large amounts of foods.
To show that it is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seems to be influenced by genetic factors. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
Other reasons such as bad eating and living habits as well as illnesses also contribute to weight gain. The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people who are overweight continues to grow.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects. However, it takes a long time to develop and test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.
28. Why does the author ask a question in Paragraph 1
A. To stress his doubts. B. To compare different results.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To express his unhappiness.
29. What might be the key reason for getting fat
A. Bad living habits. B. Genetic factors.
C. Bad eating habits. D. Serious illnesses.
30. What did the scientists do with the mice during their experiment
A. They gave them the same experimental conditions.
B. They fed them on a special diet with only fat.
C. They studied the genetic structure of their bodies.
D. They divided them into two groups at the beginning.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Current Weight-loss Medicines Have Bad Effects
B. Controlling Weight Gain Is Hard but Possible
C. Knowing Your BMR Helps Lose More Weight
D. Genes Play a Role in Deciding Your Weight
D
Have you ever been in mid-conversation with someone, when you look over and find them standing in the same position as you or holding the same facial expression It may seem like they have consciously copied you, but it is much more likely that it is the chameleon (变色龙) effect at play.
The chameleon effect is the unconscious imitation (无意识的模仿) of another person’s gestures or behavior. Just as a chameleon attempts to match any environment’s colors, people acquire the behavior of others to bring them closer together and help make their interactions smooth.
The chameleon effect was confirmed in an experiment by psychologists John Bargh and Tanya Chartrand in 1999. The part of their experiment included 78 people, who each spoke with an experimenter. During the test, Bargh and Chartrand studied whether participants would copy the actions of someone they hadn’t met before, like moving the foot and touching the face. The second part measured the impact that copying someone has on the person being imitated.
In the first stage, participants increased their face touching by 20% and their foot movement by 50% while in conversation about a photograph with the experimenter. The individuals weren’t aware of what they were being studied for, and the photograph was used to catch their attention to insure unconscious acts. The second stage involved half of the participants being copied, and then rating the likability of the experimenter. The results, showed that those who were imitated scored the experimenter higher. It has shown that when someone copies our behavior, we develop more positive feelings about them. These interactions could be a person unconsciously willing to be liked, and forming a moment of connection.
The main reasons behind humans’ imitation are positive. However, when people carry this chameleon effect to the extreme, they can lose their sense of self. Those who change their entire personalities in different groups often go undetected. But more common signs of the chameleon effect are easier to notice. Next time you are in a social gathering, take a look around and you might just see some chameleons for yourself.
32. Why do people imitate others’ behavior
A. To show admiration for others. B. To adapt to the surroundings.
C. To establish a connection with others. D. To attract others’ attention.
33. How did the experimenter guarantee participants’ unconscious behaviors
A. By keeping an eye on their actions.
B. By directing their attention to a photo.
C. By telling them the purpose of the study.
D. By evaluating the impacts of imitation.
34. What conclusion can be drawn from the experiment
A. The copied movements help people to feel relaxed.
B. Too much of the chameleon effect can be of benefit.
C. People imitating others are not easy to be detected.
D. People tend to like those who imitate their behavior.
35. Which of the following shows the chameleon effect according to the passage
A. Students adopt teachers’ accents for fun after class.
B. People change their habits to please others on purpose.
C. An actor copies a celebrity vividly on stage.
D. A husband and his wife share similar behaviors over time.

Like any hike of this nature, you should be prepared for the adventure in the desert: First, hike with a partner for safety. I enjoy hiking with family members and close friends. Second, carry a cell phone with you. However, keep in mind that you might not get any signal in some places, so don't depend on it. Third, be sure to have the right clothing and shoes or boots for the hike. Light, breathable clothing is the best during the summer, along with the hat and strong hiking shoes. Forth, carry plenty of water. Having a few snacks can give you energy, too. Fifth, take a small first-aid box with you, particularly on longer hikes, in case you get injured. Sixth, pack a detailed map of the area you’re hiking, along with a compass or a GPS to locate your position. And finally, take nothing home with you except pictures and memories. You can protect these areas by leaving all rocks, flowers, and other objects for future visitors.
