A certain item is being stolen more than ever in Japan. Rather than the usual luxury watches, cars, or jewelry, thieves in Japan are picking fruits as their target. There is a thriving market for quality fruits which are grown by hand to ensure they reach high standards for appearance and taste. Japanese individuals and companies often buy them as gifts for special occasions.
One softball-sized strawberry, for instance, can cost as much as 500,000 JPY($3,346 USD). Several districts have recently witnessed an alarming rise in fruit theft. Yamanashi Prefecture, for instance, lost an shocking 8,500,000 JPY($56,890 USD)from 40 cases of missing fruit in the last four months. It is so bad, in fact, that local firefighters and private security guards are going around and checking the area at night to ensure the safety of the fruits.
The same thing happened to another peach farm located in Fuefuki City when farmers were aware that 1,400 peaches went missing out of the blue. Another top farming company in Yamanashi City lost 1,500 peaches just two days later. Peaches were not the only luxury fruit being targeted in the past few months. Just last September 28,400 bunches of grapes went missing in the Yamanashi Prefecture. The total loss amounted to 350,000($2,343 USD).
Farm owners are now increasing their security measures to prevent this rise in theft. They are paying a fortune to employ local private security guards to patrol around the clock when fruits are ripe. Even they are about to install a monitoring system to watch over the farm at all times, which serves as a threat to thieves. If thefts do happen, they can call the police.

27. What is the primary purpose of the article

There are just two species of flowering plant native to the Antarctic peninsula(半岛), which are now growing at record rates as temperatures rise and ice begins to melt, according to a new study. One is Antarctic hair grass, which grew as much in 2009—2019 as it had in the previous 50 years; the other is Antarctic pearl wort, which has seen the speed of growth increase five times over the same period.
A team led by Nicoletta Cannone, a researcher from the University of Insubria, Italy, measured the growth of Antarctica’s two native plants at sites on Signy Island. The results were shocking: the sites have not only seen faster growth, but they have become more densely populated by the plants each year, which indicates the climate has got warmer.
According to nonprofit Discovering Antarctica, the region’s temperatures have warmed by an average of 3°C as a result of human-caused climate change, meaning once stable ice shelves are now narrowing down. In some parts, that has given way to land now habitable to the two plant species.
Peter Convey, at the British Antarctic Survey, told the New Scientist: “The most novel feature of this is not that something is growing faster but that we’re starting to see what is almost like a step change or a tipping point.” And Matthew Davey, at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban, UK, added: “Increasing expansion is now clearly evident in the region. This research gives us the first all-sided data showing how fast and how dense the plant community may expand.”
The researchers acknowledged there could be other factors at play causing the plants’ growth, such as the decreasing fur seal population—but this also is linked to climate change. Meanwhile, as the land becomes more habitable, non-native species could also occupy the land and grow more than native plants, which could in turn destabilize long-established local ecosystems.
“If we estimate what we observed on Signy Island to other sites in Antarctica, a similar process can also occur,” said Cannone “This means the Antarctic landscape and biodiversity could change rapidly. And that really concerns all.”
28. According to the article, what factors play a role in the fast growth of the two native plants
A. The climate getting warmer.
B. The fur seal population rising.
C. The non-native plants occupying the land.
D. The quality of the soil of the land improving.
29. What does the underlined word “destabilize” mean in the last paragraph but one
A. Strengthen. B. Change. C. Benefit. D. Narrow.
30. What’s the researchers’ main concern regarding the growth of flowering plants in Antarctica
A. The decrease of fur seal population.
B. The occupation of non-native species.
C. The impact of human-caused climate change.
D. The rapid change in Antarctic landscape and biodiversity.
31. Which of the following is the suitable title for the text
A. Scientists Working in Antarctica.
B. Native Flowering Plants in Antarctica.
C. The Effect of Global Warming on Antarctica.
D. Non-native Plant Species in Antarctica.

Asia’s centuries-long fascination with fair skin has deep roots and, even today, is influenced by Eurocentric(以欧洲为中心的)beauty standards linking paleness with charm. The questioned concept dating from colonial history is continued through media channels.
This fascination is vividly reflected in the make-up industry, leading to a multi-billion-dollar market for skin-whitening products across Asia. A striking survey conducted by WHO revealed 40% of women in countries such as China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and South Korea routinely use skin-whitening products. It was also found that 75% of men believed their partners would be beautiful with lighter skin. Such a deep-rooted relation between fairness and beauty continues to fuel the thriving skin-whitening industry. The industry’s value is estimated to reach a breathtaking $8.9 billion by 2027.
The historical preference for lighter skin in Asian culture is also closely tied to socio-economic status. Historically, having fair skin indicated higher social status, as individuals engaging in physical labor often had darker skin from being in the sun. The upper class, meanwhile, enjoyed a sheltered indoor life due to their wealth, translating into fairer skin. Consequently, those with darker skin remained in a lower status, fueling the favor for fairer faces.
Colonialism(殖民主义)has also affected the beauty standards in Asian countries. Many nations across the continent were once colonized by white powers from the US and Europe. Eventually, their fair skin symbolized the power and wealth of the colonizers. Even in Japan, never colonized, noblewomen during the Edo period adopted white makeup to copy the luxurious image related to lighter skin. These historical factors continue to shape modern beauty standards in Asia.
In recent years, such Eurocentric beauty standards have been receiving widespread criticism. A growing movement has come up, promoting the beauty of darker skin tones and advocating accepting all skin colors. While the preference for pale skin remains universal in many Asian countries, the tendency is slowly turning as new standards of beauty pop up. Hopefully, we will see a society that celebrates inclusivity and the beauty of all skin tones.
32. What’s the common beauty standards in Asian countries
A. They include a person’s charm.
B. They relate to a person’s makeup.
C. They are measured by a person’s fair skin.
D. They refer to the color of a person’s skin.
33. According to the article, what historical factors contributed to the preference for lighter skin in Asian cultures
A. European colonizers in Japan.
B. Exposure to the sun and physical labor.
C. Socio-economic status and colonialism.
D. The use of white makeup by noblewomen.
34. What is the current tendency in Asia regarding beauty standards, according to the article
A. A growing preference for pale skin.
B. A rejection of Eurocentric beauty ideals.
C. No change in traditional beauty standards.
D. Increasing acceptance of diverse skin tones.
35. What is the article’s general message regarding beauty standards in Asia
A. They are unique to Asian culture.
B. They are set to remain unchanged.
C. They are rooted in biological differences.
D. They are being questioned and changing gradually.

After school one winter day, Jack’s mother told him to go out and play in the snow.
“But it’s so cold outside, Mother!” Jack said.
“Put on your coat and your hat and your gloves,” his mother said. “You can build a snowman before your father comes home.”
Jack said “I need a carrot for the nose and some things for the snowman’s hat and face.” With a bucket, Jack collected everything needed to decorate his snowman. His mother was watching him build the snowman from the window.
Outside, in his yard, Jack started with a small snowball. On his knees, he rolled the snow into a big ball.
At another window, his new neighbour Naoko was watching Jack play. Naoko asked her mother to allow her to do that. Though her mother was worried about her, Naoko was finally allowed to.
In her winter clothes, Naoko joyfully ran to Jack and offered to help him.
Jack was very glad and told her “My father will be home from work very soon.”
“Okay. What can I do ” Naoko asked.
“I have built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for my snowman’s head.”
“But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Naoko said.
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack said. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.”
Leaving Naoko alone, Jack rolled a third snowball away from Naoko to make his snowman’s head.
Naoko walked in disappointment back into her own yard and began to build her own snowman. She thought to herself. “I’m going to make my own.” Soon Naoko finished building her own in her own way, with her hat and scarf to decorate it and sticks and pine cones for her snowman’s eyes, mouth and arms. Her mother clapped from the window.
Jack made a hat for his snowman with his bucket. He used buttons for the eyes and mouth, a carrot for the snowman’s nose. After finishing, Jack’s mother smiled. His father was driving up the street.
Para.1 All of a sudden, the head fell off Jack’s snowman and crashed to the ground! ___________________________

Of so many famous scientists all over the world, I admire Yuan Longping most, who is an agricultural scientist of China.
In 1973, he became the first agricultural pioneer in the world to grow rice that enabled farmers to expand their output greatly. Though he achieved his goal, he still devoted himself to research on rice so as to feed more people in the world. Yuan Longping made such great contributions to mankind that he is respected and admired by people all over the world.
All in all, we must learn from Yuan Longping in order to serve our country better when we grow up.

All of a sudden, the head fell off Jack’s snowman and crashed to the ground! Seeing the unexpected situation, Jack was frozen with shock. Thinking his father was almost home, Jack cried at the top voice “Oh no! My snowman fell apart.” Naoko heard Jack’s cry and ran over to his yard to see what the problem was. Seeing snowman’s fallen head and Jack’s desperate expression, Naoko silently walked over and carefully checked Jack’s snowman. Then she inched toward Jack and patted him on the back, cautiously saying “I’ll help you roll another snowball”, adding “If we do it together we can finish it before your father gets home.”
Together, Jack and Naoko rolled a new snowball. They shaped it with their gloves until it was round. Then they lifted it up onto the snowman’s body and decorated it with the carrot and buttons. At last, they finished the snowman. They smiled to each other in relief. Jack gave Naoko a gentle hug to extend his gratitude. At this time, Jack’s father was home. Seeing the two kids’ works, Jack’s father wore a relieved smile, saying “I think your snowmen can make good neighbors. And so can you!” Ever since, the two have been good neighbors and also good friends, and the two yards have been pregnant with happy laughter.

W: No, Daddy! You are looking out of the garage window. The big person in the middle is Uncle Charlie because he always gives me candy.

W: The sun here in Sardinia is so much hotter than I imagined. I’m already sunburned after lying on the beach for just 15 minutes.
M: I guess because we’re so close to Africa.
W: Let me check my guidebook. You’re right. We are only 120 miles from Africa. It says we are as close to Tunisia as we are to the coast of Italy. We should go there! I bet we could catch a boat there.
M: We already took a boat ride from Italy to get here. Let’s just enjoy where we are. Check and see what we can do here first.
W: It says if we go 10 miles south from here, we will be in Cagliari.
M: Yeah, but are there any beaches there
W: Yes, Poetto Beach is nearby. You have to pay to get there, but it has white sand.
M: Sounds good to me!

Good morning, students! This is your principal, Mrs. Jenkins, wishing everyone a good day. I would like to make one student’s day extra special this sunny Friday morning. His name is Bobby Smith. Yeah, Bobby, this is for you! Bobby does great with his studies, and will probably graduate with honors, but that’s not why I’m celebrating him today. Two days ago, his science teacher, Ms. Green was having a bad day. Most of the students could tell something was up, but they didn’t know exactly what. Well, that morning, Ms. Green had learned that her uncle had passed away. She hadn’t seen him for years, but he had meant a lot to her when she was growing up. Realizing how sad she looked, Bobby had his mom, who runs a flower shop, deliver a bunch of flowers to Ms. Green on her lunch break. Ms. Green, who is now flying back to New York to be with her family, said she was so touched by what Bobby did that it allowed her to make it through the rest of the day. Thanks, Bobby! The lesson here is for us to be good to each other.
