Unit 1 Food for thought
George Nakashima always insisted that he was a simple woodworker, not an artist.Even though major museums exhibited his works and the director of the American Craft Museum called him a national treasure,Mr.Nakashima rejected the label of an artist. For almost fifty years he simply went on shaping wood into beautiful chairs, tables, and cabinets.
Nakashima had a clear goal.He intended each piece of furniture he made to be as perfect as possible.Even making a box was an act of creation, because it produced an object that had never existed before.Initially Nakashima used local wood, sometimes from his own property.Later,he travelled to seek out English oak,Persian walnut,African zebra wood and Indian teak.He especially liked to find giant roots that had been dug out of the ground after a tree was taken down.Nakashima felt that making this wood into furniture was a way of allowing the tree to live again.
Most furniture makers prefer perfect boards, but Nakashima took pleasure in using wood with interesting knots (节疤) and cracks. These irregularities gave the wood personality and showed that the tree had lived a happy life.
He never failed to create an object that was both useful and beautiful. One early piece Nakashima designed was a three legged chair for his small daughter Mira to use when she sat at the table for meals. The Mira chair became so popular that Nakashima later made both low and high versions.Another famous piece, the Conoid chair, has two legs supported by blade like feet.Always,Nakashima's designs were precise and graceful, marked by simplicity that revealed his love for the wood.
As the years passed,Nakashima's reputation grew and his works received many awards. His children Mira and Kevin, now adults, joined the team of craftspeople in their father's studio.Nakashima's dream of integrating (合并) work and family has come true.
1.Which of the following best describes Nakashima
A.Generous and outgoing.
B.Creative and modest.
C.Capable and friendly.
D.Honest and simple.
2.What can we learn about Nakashima from paragraph 4
A.He made chairs exclusively for his family.
B.His chairs were of the same style.
C.He loved his daughter Mira most.
D.His works were mostly simple but beautiful.
3.Why was Nakashima called a national treasure
A.Because he loved both his work and family.
B.Because the wood materials he used were precious.
C.Because his works were of great artistic value.
D.Because he spent most of his life making furniture.

Auguste Rodin spent the best part of four decades working on his masterpiece. The MonaLisa,by contrast, took Leonardo da Vinci a mere 15 years or so.So we can only imagine what those masters would think of an up and coming artist who can knock out complex works in under two hours. Not least because she's a robot.
Meet Ai Da,the world's first robot artist to stage an exhibition, and, according to her creator, every bit as good as many of the abstract human painters working today.
Named in honour of the pioneering female mathematician Ada Lovelace, the artificial intelligence (AI) machine can draw a portrait by sight, and compose an “extremely beautiful” painting rich with meaning.
The humanoid machine can walk, talk and hold a pencil or brush. But it is Ai Da's ability to teach itself new and ever more complicated means of creative expression that has set the art world excited.
From a simple photograph, whether a bee or a tree, the robot has done abstract paintings warning of the fragility (脆弱性) of the environment that would look at home in a top modern gallery.
“We just can't predict what she will do,what she's going to produce, what the limit of her output is,” said Aidan Meller, who is in charge of the Unsecured Futures exhibition.
Meller is clear that his goal is not to replace human artists.Rather,he compares the rise of AI art to the coming of photography.“In the 1850s everyone thought photography would replace art and artists, but actually it became a new style bringing many new jobs.” he said.
“We are looking forward to the conversation Ai Da brings in audiences,” said Lucy Seal, researcher for the project.“A measure of her artistic potential and success will be the discussion she inspires.Engaging people so that we feel empowered to re imagine our attitudes to organic life and our futures is a major aim of the project.”
4.Why does the author mention Auguste Rodin and da Vinci
A.To support an idea.
B.To make a prediction.
C.To make a contrast.
D.To analyze characters.
5.What does “look at home” in Para.5 mean
A.Look familiar. B.Fit perfectly.
C.Make it at home. D.Feel comfortable.
6.What is the purpose of the creation of Ai Da
A.To improve painting skills.
B.To enrich contemporary art forms.
C.To measure the potential of art.
D.To inspire different views on human life.
7.What is the main idea of the text
A.A robot artist has achieved success.
B.An AI artist draws in pen and brush.
C.A robot artist will replace human artists.
D.An AI artist will take the art world by storm.

All human societies play games.Kicking a ball can be found everywhere whether the ball is just a ball of cloth,or a skin stuffed_with feathers or air.
But complex games and team sports have tended to arise in big civilizations — the higher the cultural level of a society is,the greater the complexity of the interaction is,and hence perhaps the more complex the forms of sports are.
This is not always the case. The ancient Greeks, for example, preferred the individual rather than team sports. But in China for well over 2,000 years, people played the game of “kickball” — cuju. The members were often young men from wealthy families though there were also professional kickball players.
Cuju was played as entertainment at court banquets or the reception of foreign ambassadors.Even emperors played kickball.
As you'd expect in a Confucian society, kickball clubs were keen on the key qualities of mercy and courtesy.A great player was one who showed “the spirit of the game”.The “Ten Essentials of Kickball” included respect for other players, polite behaviors and team spirit. There was to be no ungentlemanly behavior,no dangerous play, and no hogging (独占) the ball.In other words,as we used to say,“Play up and play the game.”
What a contrast with the ancient Greek athletics where only victory counted and if that needed gamesmanship,or cruel professional fouls (犯规),then so be it.
As a way of national culture protection, cuju was listed into the first batch of China's intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
8.What does the underlined phrase “stuffed with” mean in paragraph 1
A.Filled with. B.Decorated with.
C.Surrounded with. D.Covered with.
9.What may contribute to the complicated games
A.Teams. B.Interactions.
C.Societies. D.Civilizations.
10.Who were the major members in a cuju team according to the text
A.Sleepers.
B.The rich young men.
C.Emperors.
D.The professional athletes.
11.What is the fifth paragraph mainly about
A.Kickball's popularity.
B.Kickball's development.
C.Kickball's importance.
D.Kickball's characteristics.

It was early morning, yet already it had been a very bad day.One thing after another, the downward spiral (螺旋)continued when a large bottle of orange juice slid from my hands and fell to the floor.Glass and sticky juice splashed onto the farthest corners of the kitchen.Shocked,I looked at the mess. Then I dropped heartbrokenly down to the floor,my eyes filling with tears. The tears seemed to show that “today is just not my day”.
Bad day or not, things had to be done.Filled with anxiety and negative mental baggage,I got in my car to drive into town.In the few minutes it took to travel to the bank. I made a decision.I would be careful not to pass my bad day off to anyone else.I would be friendly and polite. And I would not be angry when that careless driver pulled quickly and rudely in front of me,causing me to brake suddenly.
Standing in line at the bank,I was silently talking to myself.Actually,I was scolding myself. All of the events that had accumulated and contributed to my bad day were,in reality,so very minor and trivial.I was overreacting.I was filled with self-pity.I tried to imagine the innumerable, individual lives that had been affected by terrorist attacks,by war,by hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
For the second time that day my eyes filled with tears as I realized how disconnected I felt from all those individuals who were trying to cope with truly miserable experiences in their lives.
They all seemed so distant and unknowable, and this justified and strengthened my belief that I was being self-centered and selfish.I was sure that all my efforts to be a caring and loving person were in vain.
A voice broke through my mental distractions.Somehow I had mechanically finished my bank transaction (交易)and the teller was trying to get my attention.“Young lady,”she was saying, gently.“Young lady!”

I looked up and into the eyes of the bank teller,a silver haired grandmother with gentle beauty. Her keen eyes reflected concern as she leaned forward and softly said,“I don't know what is happening inside of you,but please, believe me when I tell you that—everything will be okay.”And then she did something quite marvelous. My hands were resting on the counter. She took her hands and placed them gently on top of mine. The touch was quick but electric. And at that moment my world shifted.
In the moment of her touching my hands,my self doubt disappeared.I found understanding and acceptance.I knew that love was being channeled through the heart of this beautiful woman directly into my heart.I was filled with a deep awareness inside me—that I am loved.I was speechless.I smiled and gave her a little nod.It was my first smile of the day.But it would not be my last,as from that moment on my entire day was transformed.

When I stepped into the Samcheong Park Library in Seoul,I saw the future. The simple building had a nice selection of books and a cafe where readers could enjoy coffee while gazing at the leaves outside. It was specifically designed without any latest technology.
“What's so innovative about that?” a librarian in Toronto asked when I showed her pictures.Innovation to her meant digital technology, like 3-D printers.“Why couldn't they both be innovative?” I asked.
We are constantly told that innovation is the most important force in our economy, without which we would be left behind. But that fear of missing out has led us to fall into the false traps of innovation over truly innovative ideas that may be simpler and more effective. This mindset implies that if you just buy the new thing, you have innovated! Each year, businesses and individuals run around like broken toy robots, trying to figure out their strategy for the latest buzzword equipment.
At best, this is a waste of resources.Devices are bought, used and abandoned,as the technology's capabilities fall short of its promise. But at its worst, this approach can truly cause damage.Schools cut field trips to purchase tablets with few proven benefits.Companies that applied AI to hiring have actually strengthened gender and racial prejudices.
True innovation isn't just some magic devices. It is a continuing process of reflection and reassessment, which often means adopting “old” ideas and tools in a new context,or even returning to methods that worked in the past.Adjusted properly, these rearview (后视的) innovations have proved as transformative as novel technologies.
Look no farther than the streets of New York, which have been redesigned recently to accommodate cyclists with car-free zones. The idea isn't new.It was created half a century ago, with the aim of bringing cities back to their residents. And while e-reader sales have been exploding,Penguin just announced it would publish tiny printed books,an ideal solution for a market demanding both convenience and practicability.
1.Why is a librarian mentioned
A.To set an example.
B.To cite an authority.
C.To make a prediction.
D.To present an argument.
2.What does the underlined word “buzzword” mean in Para.3
A.Fashionable. B.Affordable.
C.Practical. D.Imaginative.
3.What does the writer agree with about innovation
A.Wasted resources lead to innovation.
B.Magic devices encourage innovation.
C.Innovation should be human-centered.
D.The power of technology is undervalued.

Going to sleep at a certain time is associated with a lower risk of developing heart disease, according to researchers. In a study published in the European Heart Journal,a team found that going to sleep between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm was beneficial compared to earlier or later bedtime. The research included 88,026 participants in the UK.
An analysis found that sleep onset time of 10:00 pm to 10:59 pm was associated with the lowest incidence of heart disease. There was a 25% higher risk of heart disease with the sleep onset at midnight or later,a 12% greater risk for 11:00 pm to 11:59 pm and a 24% higher risk for falling asleep before 10:00 pm compared to the sleep onset from 10:00 pm to 10:59 pm.
“The body has a 24-hour internal clock that helps adjust physical and mental functioning,”study author David of the University of Exeter said in a statement.“While we cannot conclude it from our study, the results suggest that early or late bedtime may be more likely to destroy the body clock.” “While the findings do not show the conclusion, sleep timing has appeared as a potential heart disease risk factor—independent of other risk factors. If our findings are proved in other studies, sleep timing and basic sleep health could be a low-cost public health target for lowering the risk of heart disease,” David added.
4.Which is the best time for sleep
A.8:40 pm. B.9:50 pm.
C.10:45 pm. D.11:10 pm.

B.Sleep timing is a possible heart disease risk factor.
C.Sleep timing is a risk factor related to other factors.

There is a time when many Americans question whether a college degree is worth its cost. However,a recent study found Americans who completed college or university are more likely to have friends and are less lonely than those who only finished high school.
Daniel Cox,director of the Survey Center on American Life, said that in general Americans are experiencing a “friend recession”,meaning a decline in their number of friends.Cox noted “Americans have fewer close friends today than we did in the early 1990s.But men and those without a college degree are particularly affected because they seem to have experienced a much more dramatic decline over that period”.
The Center questioned 5,054 people this past summer. It found Americans with a college degree feel more socially connected and are more active in their communities than people who didn't go to college. As a result, those who completed college report feeling less lonely.
Previous research showed that Americans who didn't go to college are less likely to marry.A 2012 study found that college-educated women are much more likely to get married than women who dropped out of high school.A 2013 study of people born between 1957 and 1964 found that both men and women who didn't finish high school are less likely to marry than those with more education.
Today,65 percent of college-educated Americans over age 25 are married.About 50 percent of people with a high school diploma,or who dropped out of high school, are married. Those numbers were different in 1990,when marriage rates among the college graduates were at 69 percent, compared with 63 percent for those who did not go to college, says a Pew research report.

根据画线词前的“This mindset implies that if you just buy the new thing, you have innovated!”
根据第一段的“In a study published ...or later bedtime.”
根据第二段的“There was a ...from 10:00 pm to 10:59 pm.”
根据第三段中David所说的话“While the findings ...other risk factors.”
故选A。]
1.C [根据下文中的“I just couldn't stare at a blank sheet of paper and a story”可以推断,作者是一个创造力不足的人。]
come up with“提出,想出”。]

10.B [根据下文中的对比“I was always looking for the next to learn”可知,此处讲的是人们一般会几乎一辈子都待在一个公司。]
12.A [此处与下文的“to Y&R to get creative experience”形成呼应,空处考查get的同义转换,故选gain。]

The key to a happy life has nothing to do with getting ahead at work, making money,or travelling the world.Instead, living your best life and creating meaning is all about one thing: relationships.
A study of adult development has been running at Harvard since 1938,and is now on its second generation of participants—the children of the original study's subjects.Over decades, the research team collected data about their lives, including their physical and mental health, marital (婚姻的) status and quality, career happiness, and more.
They found the most important factor in how happy and healthy these men were over time was their relationships. In other words, finding happiness in life is all about the people you love.
The research doesn't only include romantic relationships and marriage.Quality, close relationships are important whether they are in the context of romantic relationships or closeness between friends or family members. The kind of relationship you have is less important than how close you feel with them.
However, the study only included men,and there're important gender differences in how people experience relationships. Some research suggests that men may benefit more from marriage. But they tend to have a harder time keeping friendships; as men get older, they are more likely to say they have nobody to discuss important subjects with.So it's possible that having close relationships throughout their lives might affect men differently than women.
However, the findings line up with empirical (以试验为依据的) research on the effects of loneliness.People who are socially isolated have a greater likelihood of strokes (中风),heart attacks, and higher blood pressure, not to mention mental health issues.
Unfortunately for the youngest generation, recent surveys found that young Americans are lonelier than older generations. That will likely have a big impact on how healthy and happy people feel throughout their lives.
1.What lesson can we learn from this passage
A.Travel far and wide to learn a lot.
B.Keep an open mind to be creative.
C.Treasure your time with your loved ones.
D.Work hard to be the best of your profession.
2.What's the implication in paragraph 5
A.Women are unwilling to participate in the study.
B.Men are better at maintaining a close relationship.
C.Women are not treated equally in scientific research.
D.The findings of the study may not be true for women.
3.Why is the youngest generation unfortunate
A.Because they have nobody to talk to.
B.Because they are more socially isolated.
C.Because they can't keep their relationships.
D.Because they suffer physically and mentally.
4.What is the best title for the passage
A.Close Relationships Make a Happy Life

C.Close Relationships Ensure People's Health
D.Men and Women Differ in Keeping Relationships

After hours of working, many people find themselves in desperate need of recharging. Some people grab a coffee to stay awake. 1
A recent study found that one in five working Americans nap(小睡) during the workday, with 87% of them reporting feeling refreshed afterward.“A power nap can provide the refreshment you need if you're struggling to stay alert or haven't had a good night's sleep,” explains Rebecca Robbins,an associate scientist at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. 2 However, power naps are only beneficial when they are done correctly.
“You don't have to go to sleep fully”,says James Maas,a professor at Cornell University, who is best known for his work in the field of sleep research. 3 He says,“20 minutes should be enough to power through the rest of the workday.” However,Maas cautions that longer naps are counterproductive and even harmful. If your power nap time is longer than 40 minutes, you're going to wake up feeling very groggy
Shelby Harris,a clinical psychologist, adds that the best time to take your power nap is between 1 p.m.and 3 p.m. 4
To make the most of your power nap, you'd better choose a comfortable place and time to nap. Also, put your alarm away from the bed. 5 One more thing, get some daylight exposure after your nap. It's best to get up,walk around and see some sunlight to fight any grogginess.

Two things changed my life: my mother and a bike basket. It's true.I would be a different person if my mom hadn't turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today—a lesson about the value of efforts.
My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell on my mother to actually carry it out.Looking back,I honestly don't know how she did it.Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what other kids owned,we'd hear something like,“I don't care what so-and-so got for his birthday. You are not getting a TV in your room or a big party.”We had to earn our allowance (零用钱) by doing chores (家庭杂务) around the house.I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost,it was not replaced.
It was one summer day.My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window—white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers. The basket winked at me and I knew—I had to have it.
“It's beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her.“What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn't stand it any longer.“Mom,please can I get it I'll do anything, please,Mom,please?” I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever,“if you save up,you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I have earned enough,it'll have gone! Someone else will buy it.Please,Mom,please?”
“There might be another way,” she said.

谋篇布局:结合文章内容和续写第一段提示句“‘I'll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,’ Mom explained.”
结合续写第二段的提示句“Finally,I got my dream basket, but soon I sadly found the same basket on others' bikes!” 因此,考生在本段应注意描写“我”的失望之情和具体表现,并结合主题“if my mom hadn't turned a bike basket into a life lesson...value of efforts”讲述妈妈对“我”的教育让“我”转变看法,并意识到努力的价值。
“I'll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,”Mom explained.I agreed immediately and Mom bought the flowery basket and kept it somewhere I couldn't find. Each day,I finished my new routine of double household chores with passion and enthusiasm. Each night,I crossed off another day on the calendar as I counted down to the day.As the days passed, the basket seemed to become even more beautiful in my imagination. The extra chores didn't bother me.The basket was worth it.The anticipation grew stronger as the days ticked away.
Finally,I got my dream basket, but soon I sadly found the same basket on others' bikes! So shocked and upset was I that I immediately went home to report this disaster to my Mom.Seeing my sulky face, she gently wiped away my tears.Holding my little face in her warm hands, she spoke out what has become the lesson I still carry with me today.“Your basket is not the same basket. It's unique because it was not obtained by mere money but by all your worthwhile effort and waiting.”

An 89-year-old man,Manfred Steiner, has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward and nearly a lifetime thinking about:earning his Ph.D.And now he is a physicist.
Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted and because he overcame health problems that could have affected his studies.“But I made it ,and this was the most satisfactory point in my life,”he said.
When he was young,Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein. But his mother and uncle persuaded him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree in 1955 and moved to the US soon after.
Steiner studied hematology (血液学) at Tufts University and biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a full professor and led the hematology section of the medical school at Brown University from 1985 to 1994.Steiner helped establish a research program in hematology at the University of North Carolina. He directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics.“It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled, and that always stuck in the back of my head,”he said.At age 70,he started taking undergraduate classes.
Physics professor Brad Marston was surprised when Steiner entered his quantum mechanics class. But he became Steiner's adviser for his dissertation (学位论文) after realizing how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked.“He has written many papers in medical science, more papers than I've written in physics,”Marston said.“One thing that's really true about Manfred is that he perseveres.”
After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the US contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life. His advice is:Do what you love to do.
1.Why did Steiner value his degree in physics
A.Because it solved his health problems.
B.Because it was his long-pursued dream.
C.Because it met his mother's expectation.
D.Because it was inspired by Albert Einstein.
2.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Steiner's contributions to teaching.
B.Steiner's researches after retirement.
C.Steiner's achievements in hematology.
D.Steiner's performances at Tufts University.
3.What impressed Professor Marston most about Steiner
A.His taking undergraduate classes at 70.

Evidence of a worm-like creature about the size of a grain of rice has been uncovered in South Australia, and researchers believe it is the oldest ancestor on the family tree that includes humans and most animals. The creature lived about 535 million years ago.It is considered to be an evolutionary step forward for early life on the Earth.
Researchers have been trying to find evidence of the common ancestor of most animals.Developing its body structure and organization successfully allowed life to move in specific, purposeful directions. This includes everything from worms and dinosaurs to amphibians (两栖动物) and humans. But for our common ancestor, they knew that fossils (化石) of the tiny, simple creatures they imagined would be nearly impossible to find because of its size and soft body. Then, they turned to fossilized burrows, dating back to the Ediacaran Period, found in South Australia.
For 15 years, scientists knew the burrows were created by the creature. There was no evidence of what made the burrows and lived in them until researchers decided to take a closer look at the burrows.Geology professor Mary Droser spotted impressions shaped like ovals near the burrows.
A 3-D laser scan revealed the impressions containing evidence of a body shaped and sized like a rice grain, with a noticeable head and tail which suggested it had muscles. The muscles would have enabled the creature to move and create the burrows, like the way a worm moves. And the size of the creature matched with the size of the burrows they found.
The researchers involved in the study named the creature Ikaria wariootia. The first name translates as “meeting place” in the Adnyamathanha language.Adnyamathanha is the name of Australian people that live in the area where the fossil was found.
4.What does the underlined word “It” mean in the first paragraph
A.A worm-like creature.
B.A grain of rice.
C.A family tree.
D.An evolutionary step.
5.What did the researchers do during the study
A.They developed the creature in the expected way.
B.They studied a large number of worms and dinosaurs.
C.They observed the burrows close up.
D.They went back to the Ediacaran Period some years ago.
6.What inspired the scientists to explore the origins of the burrows
A.A 3-D laser scan. B.The impressions.
C.Some good ovals. D.More burrows.
7.What does the text mainly tell us
A.The researchers worked very hard in the burrows.
B.The worm-like creature may be most animals' ancestor.
C.It is very difficult to name a new kind of creature.
D.Australian people like fossils of many creatures.

Research has previously shown that years' living alone can have harmful effects on a person's health, and a new study published Monday shows that at least one of those impacts may be particularly bad for men.
The study looked at blood samples of 4,835 participants from the Copenhagen Aging and Midlife Biobank to examine levels of inflammation (炎症).“We have found a significant association between partnership breakups or years' living alone and inflammation for men only, after adjustment for selected confounders,”said Dr.Karolina Davidsen, research associate in the Department of Public Health at University of Copenhagen and publishing author of the study.“In women,we find no such effect.” The study, published in the journal BMJ,looked at both years' living alone and numbers of breakups because the end of significant relationships is often followed by years' living alone, the researchers wrote.
“This study strengthens the link experts have seen between the nervous system and inflammation, which is a significant contributor to heart disease”,said Dr.Peter Libby,a cardiovascular (心血管的) medicine specialist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, who was not involved in the study.“There is increasing understanding of fundamental links between psychological stress and physical health related to inflammation,” Libby said.
Dr.Davidsen said that while women didn't report this finding, one reason for this could be the fact that there were fewer women in the study than men.
The levels of inflammation in the participants might also have looked different if they were measured at more advanced ages,Davidsen added. The average age of those studied was 54.5 years old,and it is possible that the impacts of the breakups and years' living alone would have continued as the participants aged, she said.
8.What element is looked at in the study
A.Blood types.
B.Social status.
C.Cultural background.
D.Periods of living alone.
9.Why do women show no significant effects according to Davidsen
A.Women handle loneliness better.
B.Fewer women are surveyed.
C.Women differ from men physically.
D.Women care more about themselves.
10.What can we learn from the study
A.The researchers involved are male.
B.The result has caused lots of arguments.
C.The impacts will continue as people age.
D.The impacts decline when people grow old.
11.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Living Alone: a Cause of Inflammation
B.Living Alone: a Great Threat to Men's Health
C.Inflammation: a Contributor to Heart Disease
D.Inflammation: a Factor in Health Improvement

Scientists in Australia have discovered that they can use the world's smelliest fruits to make devices that could power electric cars.A durian(榴莲) is a fruit that looks like a pineapple. It is a delicacy(佳肴) in some Asian countries, but its smell is so unpleasant that some of those countries have banned it from public places. Its smell has been compared to rotten eggs and even smelly old gym socks.
Vincent Gomes and his colleagues at The University of Sydney,in Australia, used durians and jackfruits—another fruit known for its terrible smell—to make energy-storing devices called supercapacitors.
Supercapacitors are an alternative to batteries. They can't store as much energy as a normal battery does, but they are much quicker to recharge.Durians and jackfruits contain some of the chemicals used in supercapacitors, which gave Gomes the idea.To make the fruit-based devices, the team heated and then freeze-dried the uneatable cores of the durian and the jackfruit to make a special kind of material called an aerogel.
Aerogels are one of the world's lightest solid materials.Often called “frozen smoke”,they are made by removing the liquid from a gel (胶状物) and replacing it with air. They have many scientific uses, and one of their special properties is the ability to conduct electric currents, which makes them an important part of supercapacitors. The aerogels made from durians and jackfruits both worked well when placed inside a supercapacitor, although the durian aerogel was found to be the better of the two.
The discovery is important because the materials currently used to make supercapacitors are expensive.Using natural foods like durians and jackfruits,Gomes says, could reduce environmental pollution as well as costs.

There was an elderly lady standing in the bone-chilling cold outside the back of the supermarket. She was holding a basket with bunches of flowers.
“Would you like the flowers They are $3,”she asked me as I was walking past.I politely responded “No,thank you.” as I walked away and went inside the supermarket.
I was walking around the supermarket searching for the thing that I was needing to buy and thinking of that lady, standing in the cold holding her basket of flowers.Visualizing the beautiful flowers I had admired, her polite quiet voice and lonely figure,I wondered about her unknown story of standing in the cold with her basket.Maybe her family was in urgent need of money; maybe she was a lone soul to earn a living with her own hands...
I had my own personal struggles.I had to budget for everything and I appreciated that $3 was a lot for me,like many of us all and probably for her too.But it wasn't my first thought when she had asked me about buying her flowers. My first thought was that I didn't have the cash but this couldn't be used as an excuse for not buying those flowers.I had not carried cash with me for a few years and I thought many of us did the same.
When I went to the register to pay with my card asked for $3 cash out.The staff member questioned me about the $3.I felt anxious about it quickly and tried to remember the money I had in my account. And at the same time she pressed the button to process it.I had mentioned that I wanted to buy flowers from the lady who was selling them outside.A sigh of relief,I was glad to see it all had been accepted by the machine and that the staff member handed me the $3.

此处cared for in captivity作后置定语,修饰前面的名词pandas。]

I walked away and around the corner of the supermarket to the lady. She was standing there, trembling in the cold.No sooner had she noticed my approach than her weather beaten face lit up.I said shyly,“Hi,sorry.I didn't have the cash on me.Yes,I would like to buy some of your flowers.” On hearing that, she instantly put the basket of flowers in front of me,wearing a big and warm smile. The flowers were in full bloom, dancing in the wind.I chose the bunch of flowers I had first sighted.
After giving her $3,I was surprised when she handed me the change.I couldn't help but ask the price of the flowers.“$3 for all!” she explained.Without hesitation,I told her to keep the change. She took the money with shaking hands, tears welling up in her eyes.As I walked away,I hoped someone else could walk up to her and buy the rest flowers. We are all going through our own struggles but no matter how little we can do,it will make a difference.
