T: Who’d like to div ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ide the arguments into two groups either in favor of or against the seal hunt in Canada
S5: I think I can do it.
Arguments in favor of Arguments against
The fishing industr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y is in decline because there are fewer fish in the Atlantic Protesters have been trying to stop the hunt.
The government says that the seals are killed in a humane way. There have been fights between hunters and protesters.
There is a demand for ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )fur – if there wasn’t they wouldn’t be able to sell the seal skins. Animal rights g ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )roups say that the hunt is unnecessary and the seals are shot or beaten to death.
The hunt is completely legal.
T: Good. Now look ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) at Activity 3. You may think of a topic to discuss in groups. Use the language above to give your opinion.
After the stud ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ents have finished discussion, ask one group to act it out.
SA: Our topic is kids on the Internet: control or not control
SA: As we all know, to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )day the Internet is becoming overwhelmingly popular in our life. Almost all the people, old or young will choose to go on line to find the latest information.
SB: You are right. Bu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t I’m afraid the teenagers surf the Internet not only to study but also to relax. For example, they can listen to music, watch movies and above all, chat on line to make friends and play computer games as well.
SC: In my opinion, the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Internet is especially beneficial to the teenagers. To some extent, I can say, it opens young people’s eyes to know more about the world with its vivid pictures and souls rather than only need static books in the past.
SA: I can’t agr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ee more. As far as I’m concerned, the Internet is just like my best friend.
SD: Honestly, I think ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )you are all right. But the point is, young people have gone too far. We can’t shy away from the serious problems the Internet has brought about.
SB: You’re ab ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )solutely right. I strongly feel the Internet is a devil as well as an angel. Without doubt, it can offer us a world of knowledge and make our communication much easier and more convenient than before. However, young people are also facing limitless pages of pornography and violence in cyberspace. So I think our government had better make a law to control kids’ going on line.
SA: I’m sorry ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) but I have to say: can we stop our kids from going out just because we say life is difficult Of course not. We can’t throw away all the apples in a basket just because among them one has gone bad.
SC: Yes, I’d go along with that.
SB: Well, I think ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )you’ve misunderstood my point of view. The problem is, kids are so young as to be vulnerable to some unhealthy contents on line. They can’t tell right from wrong in most cases. So if we just let it be, without any protective measures, certainly their life will be ruined.
SD: I agree. You jus ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t hit the nail on the head. Don’t you think that more and more young people commit crimes, such as theft, robbing, raping to just name a few, is largely due to the bad influence of the Internet Besides, I have to say that young people’s addiction to playing unhealthy computer games has become a world-wide social problem. You may hear not for once that a lot of students play truant for weeks even for months to play games. And worse still, it’s a tragedy to see some of them commit suicide at a very young age it be.
SA: It’s really s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hocking. But I still believe we shouldn’t rely on law to approach the problem. In my opinion, it limits kids’ freedom and rights.
SC: Yes. And I th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ink young people have grown up and have the ability to control themselves. On the other hand, more often than not, the fact is that the more people are controlled, the more rebellious they will become, which can do things that make things worse. So my point is to let it be.
T: Great. Now I’ll explain some words and expressions.
Notes:
1. turn = become ( link verb)
e.g: Many years later he turned doctor. (before a noun, no article.)
As autumn comes, leaves are turning yellow and are falling down.
2. be / get out of control: become no longer manageable.
e.g. The children are out of control .
3. In decline: ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) gradually and continuous loss of strength, power, numbers, etc; become less prosperous.
e.g. The sales of this company is in decline because of less demand.
4. in favor of: in support of sb. / sth.
e.g. Was he in favor of the death penalty 他赞成死刑吗?
5. be shot / beaten to death / put sb. to death.
6. signal: (n.) sign; gesture; sound , etc that conveys a message, command, etc.
e.g. She flashed the torch as a signal.
(v.) make a signal; send / express sth in this way
e.g. signal (to) the waiter to bring the menu. 示意服务员把菜单拿来。
Step V Presentation skills
T: Well, as you kn ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ow, there is a great difference between formal and informal discussion. Who is able to tell us what is it Any volunteer
S6: As for a succe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ssful informal discussion, we had better take turns to speak. Nobody is to dominate the discussion.
S7: And if you wa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nt to express agreeing or disagreeing, you can only use eye contact or add your it be opinion to something that has just been said.
S8: If you do want ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) to get in a word, you have to interrupt at a suitable time.
T: You have done ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a great job. As far as I’m concerned, before a formal discussion has been kicked off, much has to be done. Such persons are needed as Cons and Pros and as many agreements as needed must be collected. In English, it is actually called a DEBATE.
Step VI Homework
Practice expressions of giving opinions.
Organize a d ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )iscussion, a formal one still about seal hunt in Canada for next period.
