Last weekend, my husband and I drove a dog to her new home. Typically, when we have a new dog in the backseat, it’s a young dog. But this passenger was a much different story. Magdalen is a 13-year-old dog. Her owner gave her up temporarily when he was sick, but when he fully recovered several months later, he said he didn’t want her back. He had had the dog since she was young but now had no place for her.
The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable to give her a forever home. When Speak St. Louis, the rescue team I worked with, was contacted about the dog, they offered to take her in. She went to a vet (兽医) for a basic health check. But the vet didn’t have great news. Her mouth was swollen with all sorts of problems. Two teeth fell out during cleaning and eleven more had to be pulled out.
Luckily, a good friend of mine, a dog trainer with a soft heart for seniors, had agreed to adopt Magdalen. On the trip to the trainer’s home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our backseat. I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure.
It’s understandable that her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick. But I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t have wanted her back now. I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the past. We’re family and we stay that way forever. She’d be able to live a good life, I hoped, in her new home!
4. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The former owner of the dog. B. Where the dog was treated.
C. Why the dog’s mouth was swollen. D. The problems the dog met with.
5. What is the author’s job
A. Training old dogs. B. Looking for homes for dogs.
C. Treating sick dogs. D. Searching for lost dogs’ owners.
6. How did the author feel on her way to her friend’s home
A. Hopeful and proud. B. Relieved and happy.
C. Nervous and grateful. D. Surprised and curious.
7. What does the author think of Magdalen’s owner giving her up
A. She was certain he would regret. B. She believed it was painful for him.
C. She didn’t understand his behaviour. D. She thought he made a wise decision.
D 5. B 6. B 7. C
根据第二段“The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable to give her a forever home. When Speak St. Louis, the rescue team I worked with, was contacted about the dog, they offered to take her in. She went to a vet (兽医) for a basic health check. But the vet didn’t have great news. Her mouth was swollen with all sorts of problems. Two teeth fell out during cleaning and eleven more had to be pulled out.(给她临时住所的家庭有孩子和其他狗,无法给她一个永远的家。
根据第一段中的“Last weekend, my husband and I drove a dog to her new home. Typically, when we have a new dog in the backseat, it’s a young dog. (上周末,我和丈夫开车送一只狗去她的新家。通常情况下,当我们的后座上有一只新狗时,它是一只年轻的狗)”和下文作者找兽医为Magdalen治病,并最终为 Magdalen找到收养者可知,作者的工作是为狗找新家。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Luckily, a good friend of mine, a dog trainer with a soft heart for seniors, had agreed to adopt Magdalen. On the trip to the trainer’s home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our backseat. I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure.(幸运的是,我的一个好朋友,一个对老狗狗心肠很软的驯狗师,同意收养Magdalen。在去驯狗师家的路上,这位可爱的老狗狗坐在我们的后座上,看起来很放松。我感到一种巨大的宽慰和愉悦)”可知,年迈的Magdalen虽然被原来的主人拋弃了,但作者的一个关心老狗狗的好朋友答应收养它,推测作者在开车送Magdalen去朋友家的路上是感到欣慰和开心的。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“It’s understandable that her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick. But I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t have wanted her back now. I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the past. We’re family and we stay that way forever. She’d be able to live a good life, I hoped, in her new home!(她的主人生病时需要一些临时的帮助是可以理解的。但我想不出他现在为什么不想让她回来。我想起了我自己的狗和我们过去失去的年老的狗。我们是一家人,永远是一家人。她会过上好日子的。我希望,在她的新家!)”可知,Magdalen原来的主人生病时,他需要一些临时帮助,但是当他康复后却不想要Magdalen回去了。作者想起了自己的狗和在过去因年老而失去的狗,认为和狗狗们永远都是一家人。由此推知,作者无法理解Magdalen的主人的行为。故选C。

How important has Internet become in our lives The Pew Research Center conducted a survey to celebrate the Web’s 25th birthday. The researchers were greatly heartened by what they found.
“In 2006, only 14 percent of American adults used Internet. Today, it’s 87 percent,” said Lee Rainie, the director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project. “It is what has impressed us the most.”
The survey also showed that 70 percent of the Internet users have been treated kindly or generously online, while 25 percent of respondents said they have been treated unkindly. More than half—56 percent—of users said they’ve seen an online community come together to help someone solve a problem. 25 percent said they’ve left an online group because members were too unpleasant.
When Pew asked questions about whether being online has enriched people’s relationships—or not—the results were very positive: 67 percent of Internet users said their online communication with family and friends has generally strengthened those relationships. Only 18 percent said it has generally weakened those relationships.
According to the survey, 53 percent of Internet users said Internet has become the hardest tech tool to give up. It is 15 percent higher than the result of a similar survey conducted in 2006. In fact, more people said they would have a harder time stopping using Internet than giving up TV. (These days, so much great television streams across the Internet that it makes sense.)
“In our survey, we have found that the Web makes a few people very unhappy. There’s strong evidence pointing to the fact that Internet users tend to compare their daily lives with the ‘highlight moments’ of their friends’ lives,” said Lee Rainie. “It’s really silly.”
8. Which is the most impressive result of the latest survey
A. Users’ dependence on Internet. B. The fast growth of Internet users.
C. The kindness of online communities. D. The strengthened family relationships.
9. How many participants found it the hardest to give up Internet in 2006
A. 15%. B. 38%. C. 53%. D. 68%.
10. What message does Lee Rainie seem to convey in the last paragraph
A. Online depression cannot be avoided. B. Don’t show off in online communities.
C. Don’t make unnecessary comparison. D. Copy your friends’ wonderful lifestyles.
11. How do the researchers feel about the results of the survey
A. Optimistic. B. Worried. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
B 9. B 10. C 11. A

Stress is common in modern society. When you decide to do something about your stress levels it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to turn your whole life upside down — quit your job, file for divorce, move to another country. Among all the stress management strategies out there we are forgetting one essential treatment — taking time for rest.
For a long time, psychology was based on a clear division between body and mind. Psychologists focused almost only on what went on between our ears. The body was the responsibility of medical doctors and gym instructors. Recently, however, there has been a growing realization within psychology circles that the body and mind are closely connected with each other, far more than anyone ever imagined. You suffer more from stress when you are feeling run down or are suffering from a flu. If you have a bad night’s sleep, everything is more stressful the next day.
While you are more likely to suffer from stress when you are feeling poorly, you can alleviate it by looking after your body. Rest is actually good for both body and mind. We all need at least a little time to think, to reflect on life and even just to be bored. Your free time is meant for relaxation and recovery, and that is impossible when you have too much to do.
We need to relearn the art of rest, especially in these busy times. Getting enough rest is not just something we should do when we are exhausted. It is only when we take a good rest that we will be able to take a stand against stress. I like to imagine that in a few years from now it will be entirely acceptable to say, “Given how hard I worked last week on our project, this week I am going to take a day off.”
12. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. Only modern people feel stressed.
B. Psychologists don’t have to focus on the body.
C. Quitting your job is the best way to reduce stress.
D. Body and mind are strongly interacted with each other.
13. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Develop. B. Increase. C. Relieve. D. Maintain.
14. What can we know about rest
A. Rest contributes to mental relief. B. Rest will surely make people bored.
C. The idea of rest is well accepted now. D. Rest is needed only when people are tired.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Physical Health Affects the Mind B. Rest is the Secret to Stress Relief
C Brain Processes Psychological Pain D. Good Life Starts with Stress Management
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据划线词后文“Rest is actually good for both body and mind.(休息实际上对身心都有好处)”以及“by looking after your body”可知,休息实际上对身心都有好处,即你可以通过照顾好自己的身体来缓解压力。
根据最后一段“It is only when we take a good rest that we will be able to take a stand against stress.(只有当我们好好休息时,我们才能对抗压力)”可知,休息有助于精神放松。故选A。

The Great Field Day
The sun was shining brightly on the day of the big school field day. All the kids from different schools gathered for a day of fun games and activities. As I looked around, I noticed Molly, a small girl standing all by herself on the side of the field.
Feeling curious, I walked up to Molly and asked why she wasn’t playing with the other kids. She usually had a big smile, but today she looked a bit sad. After a little pause, she told me she decided not to join in. I wondered why, as she had been excited about this day for a long time.
Feeling a bit worried, I had a chat with the person in charge and found out that Molly was worried about not being as fast or strong as the other kids. The person in charge thought it was best to let Molly choose whether to play or not.
Trying to cheer her up, I told Molly that she had her own-special qualities, and if she wanted to play, what others thought didn’t matter. Molly, still unsure, decided to give it a shot and joined me, looking a bit shy. I whispered, “It’s your choice. Don’t let what others think stop you. Your preparation is what counts the most.” Molly took a deep breath and turned to me with watery eyes.

Paragraph 1
We sat down together, and I reminded Molly that only she could decide what to do. “If you want to challenge yourself, it’s not about what others think, “I said with a sincere tone. Molly took a deep breath, turned to me with watery eyes, and said she was determined to join the field day. The person in charge, hearing Molly’s decision, gave me a look that showed they understood.
Paragraph 2
When the activities began, Molly stood with the other kids at the starting line of the race. The field seemed really big, especially for someone like Molly facing some challenges. But she started running, forgetting about any worries. A few kilometers into the race, she tripped and fell. Even though it was tough, Molly picked herself up and kept going. In the end, Molly reached the finish line, taking part in the activities and making everyone happy. It wasn’t about getting the first prize; it was about Molly’s brave heart and strong determination that turned a regular field day into an awesome success.

D. Doubtful.
D
C. Brain Processes Psychological Pain D. Good Life Starts with Stress Management
