“I wish I had straight hair.” “I'd like to be taller.” Sometimes, we may want to look a bit more like someone else. However, the pictures we see on TV and social media can give us improper ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The truth is that everybody is different—and that's a good thing. Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for our self-confidence (自信).
If you feel positively (积极地) about your body, you are more likely to take care of it well. Research has even shown that you are more likely to take part in activities and perform well in school. However, feeling worried about your body could make you step back, do less well at school and even feel down. The cost of trying to achieve the “perfect” look is high. If you are spending a lot of time on it, you will have less time to spend with friends and to make important memories.
It's important to remember that everybody is different. To develop a positive body image (形象), you should try to talk positively about your own body and other people's bodies. Try not to pay too much attention to your look. Instead, think about what your body does for you. And you also should treat your body well by eating different kinds of food, doing sports and getting plenty of sleep. Remember that you are more than how you look.

When I was in primary school, I was very fat and didn't like doing exercise. I felt tired and bored when doing any kind of exercise. Because I hardly did any exercise, I often felt sick and went to see the doctor. What's worse, I was absent from school from time to time, so I couldn't catch up with others. And my poor health made it even more difficult for me to keep on exercising. My parents were really worried about me.
One afternoon, my father asked me to have a walk with him in the park. He said it was difficult for people with very poor health to take up running and other sports at the beginning, but they could start from walking and increase endurance (耐力) little by little. With his encouragement, I agreed to take a walk every day. It was hard for me to walk for half an hour. I wanted to give up, but my father encouraged me to keep on walking.

Dear future Linda (or rather myself),
I hope when you read this letter you don't find my writing too messy! At the moment, I'm 15 years old and living at home with my family. I love school and have lots of good friends. We do lots of fun things together like parties, ice skating and swimming. My biggest worry is not doing well in my school exams, but I'm working really hard so hopefully I have nothing to worry about.
There's so much I (you!) want to do. I hope you've traveled all over the world and seen lots of things and met lots of people. I hope you've visited the Great Wall in China and the pyramids in Egypt, shopped in New York City and in Paris, seen polar bears in Norway and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I've just remembered, you always wanted to see elephants in India—I hope you've managed to do that, too.
I promise myself I'll always try my best and have no regrets. I never want to forget where every step of my life has taken me. Already it seems as if so much has happened. I've moved from primary to junior middle school (about to graduate), been taught to swim and dance (I love ballet dancing), learned to speak Chinese and French, and raised money for those in need by selling old toys and books.
I really hope you're happy. I hope you have a successful career that you enjoy doing and look forward to each morning when you wake up. I hope you're surrounded by good friends and family and maybe also have a family of your own. More than anything else, I hope you've enjoyed every single moment so far!Love Linda

When you hear the word “shapeshifting (变身)”, you may think of magic in some movies and not the climate. But that's what animals are doing to go on living in the world.
A new study shows that some animals are slowly growing larger beaks (喙), legs and ears. In this way they can cool themselves down more easily as the earth gets warmer. When we talk about the climate change,
we often ask “What can humans do with this ” or “How can we live in the future ” “But we should know that animals also have to face these changes,” said Sara Ryding, from Deakin University, Australia. “If animals do nothing to keep their normal (正常的) body temperature, they will die.”
In one example, the beaks of some kinds of Australian parrots have grown 4 to 10 percent larger. The study says it has a lot to do with the hotter summer over the years. There are other similar examples. Wood mice have longer tails and bats (蝙蝠) in warm climates have bigger wings.
Although the changes are still small, they could be common as the weather becomes hotter. “Body parts like ears may become bigger, so we might be able to see a real Dumbo (big-eared elephant from a Disney cartoon) in the near future,” Ryding told the reporters.

Lan Wenjie, who just graduated from Nanjing University, said goodbye to his school life this past June and now he's not sure about what he should do in future. Many of his classmates are going to study abroad. He also received an offer from Boston University in the US. But at the same time, he also got a job offer. The company is willing to give him 10,000 yuan a month, which is quite good for a graduate.
If he takes the job, he will have to give up the chance of studying abroad. He thinks the sacrifice(牺牲) is just too much so he can't make a decision.
A professor named Li, from the School of Business, Sun Yat-sen University, said, “There is no best choice, only a better one.” In Li's opinion, there are always different reasons for the different choices. For students who study science, finance and medicine, studying abroad could be very helpful in future. Because they can get higher-level education on these subjects in the US, the UK and elsewhere. But for people in a field(领域) that's quite developed at home, there's no need to go abroad.
“One thing also very important is that your choice should not put too much financial pressure (经济压力) on your family,” Li added.

When I was in Grade 8, the school volleyball club wanted some new members. I wanted to join the club. But I was afraid that it might get in the way of my study. After struggling for a few days, I made my choice to join the club. Of course, it was tiring for me to carry on with study and volleyball at the same time. But it was quite a good thing for me because I could learn how to manage my time properly.
