Xu Xiake was one of a kind(独一无二的) in Chinese history. Four centuries ago, Xu spent about thirty years on the road. He set foot on more than half of China's land.
Xu was born in a rich family in Jiangyin, Jiangsu. His mother was well educated. She encouraged her son to read different kinds of books. But at the age of 15, Xu failed the imperial examinations(科举考试), which were seen as a key to getting a job in the government. Xu was disappointed.
