Children at boarding school get the best night's sleep because of strict lights out time, according to a recent study, which was presented at Sleep Down Under, the 33rd yearly scientific meeting of the Australasian Sleep Association. Professor Kurt Lushington, a psychologist who led the study; said, “It is a naturalistic experiment showing the key to good sleep in teenagers is quite simple: a good timetable and no mobile devices(设备)at night. "
Over the past 20 years, the time children spend sleeping has fallen and only half regularly get more than seven hours. The recommended amount is eight to ten. The biggest problems are smartphones and tablets(平板电脑)whose blue light wakes the brain, making it harder to drop off.
An Australian team compared sleep patterns( 方 式 ) of 15 to 18-year-olds at a school in Adelaide. The 59 boarders had to leave their phones in a kitchen area or on their desk before bed and turn their lights out by a set time. They slept-for an average 8 hour 26 minutes a night compared with 7 hours 46 minutes for day pupils.
Lack ( 缺 少 )of sleep affects mental health and school performance( 表 现 )and causes behavioural problems. It has also been connected with the child obesity epidemic and other diseases. This year an American study found that teenager who didn't get enough sleep took in extra sugar during a school year. They ate sweets, cakes, chocolate and biscuits and drank, fizzy drinks to promote their energy levels.
Lushingon recommends that parents reach agreement on not using a phone. This is most likely to work if they do likewise and offer other enjoyments, such as books. "I think if you put these rules in place, kids will go along with them, "he told New Scientist.

A week before New Year's Day, the phone rang. "Maggie ran off, and I can't find her, "my husband, Jerry, said in an anxious voice. He'd driven to the town park with our dog, Maggie. “Why'd she run away ”I asked. “A smaller dog scared her, and she took off over the footbridge. ” Maggie was eleven years old, overweight, and afraid of her own shadow. I asked Jerry to find her before she ran too far away. Our daughter overheard my end of the conversation. Jennifer often played upon the couch with Maggie. "Maggie's lost Tell Dad I'll help him look for her. "She flew out of the door.
At first, Maggie's tracks were easy to follow because a couple of inches of snow covered the ground. But her prints stopped at the parking lot where the snow had melted. My husband and Jennifer searched for hours into the night. Before leaving the park, Jerry hung his jacket on the branch of a tree and placed Maggie's bed below it. He hoped the wind would carry his scent ( 气 味 )and Maggie would find her way back. But there was no sign of her the next day. Jennifer made dyers ( 传 单 )and handed them out to houses around the park. We posted Maggie's photo on all the "Lost Dog" sites and social media. Friends and family promised to keep an eye out for her.
The third day, I waited at home for calls and contacted M&M Pet Rescue. They offered to help. But there was no sign, and we were all worried. Jerry and Jennifer went door-to-door with Moggie's picture, asking if anyone had seen her. Soon Maggie's story spread through the whole community.

The fourth day, a lot of people reached out to help look for Maggie. Our neighbors, friends, and even perfect strangers offered to join the search. We formed search parties and carefully combed the park, calling out Maggie’s name and hoping for a response. As hours passed, our search efforts seemed to be in vain. We were starting to lose hope, when suddenly the phone rang. It was a woman who claimed to have spotted Maggie near a nearby hiking trail. Jerry and I quickly followed the woman’s directions and found ourselves in an off-the-beaten-path area behind the park. As we rounded a corner, we saw a familiar figure standing by a tree. It was Maggie!
As Maggie came towards me, I cried tears of joy. She seemed tired and worn out, but otherwise unharmed. I picked her up and held her close, feeling her heartbeat against my chest. Maggie, in return, covered me with hundreds of kisses. I could tell she was as thrilled to see us as we were. Jerry and Jennifer were grinning from ear to ear as they hugged her too. It was a joyous reunion, filled with laughter and tears of gratitude. The experience brought our family closer together and Maggie’s return had taught us a lesson in the power of community and the importance of never giving up hope.

M: Oh, that’s exciting! I’d be far too shy to do something like that.
Text 3
M: How was your journey
W: Long! My flight was several hours late. I’d carefully planned to take the subway to my hotel, but by the time I arrived, it was closed, and there were no buses. I ended up paying 30.00 for a taxi! (3)
Text 4
W: Excuse me, we’ve been waiting for our food for almost an hour! What is going on (4)
M: I’m very sorry, ma’am. We’re really busy and trying the best we can. Can I offer you a free drink as an apology
Text 5
W: Sweetheart, please, look both ways before crossing the street, let cars pass, and don’t cross on a red light.
M: Thanks — I know, Mom. I’ll take special care while walking to school.
W: That’s my boy. Now go along — call if you need anything. (5)
Text 6
W: Can you recommend a gym (6) It’s got to be somewhere near to the office, as I’m here late most nights.
M: I use Larry’s, which takes about 10 minutes by car. It’s very basic, though. Mostly weights, and not much else.
W: Hmm… I was hoping for exercise classes.
M: Well… Gold’s Gym is 20 minutes away. But those big gyms are quite expensive.
W: It’s also just too far.
M: What about that new place on Porter Street…about 5 minutes from here. I’ve heard good things about their classes, and they have a pool. (7)
W: Oh, perfect! (7)
Text 7
M: Are these pictures of your new apartment, Hillary (8)
W: Yeah. I took them to send to my parents. (8)
M: Looks great!
W: Thanks. This is the living room.
M: It’s big for Hong Kong, and it has a nice view of the river.
W: Yeah. This is my bedroom and my kitchen… And over there is my study. That is my favorite room. (9)
M: Oh, it looks really comfortable.
W: Yeah, the study is where I spend most of my time when I’m at home. My computer and TV are here.
M: Well, I’m glad everything worked well for you after you had all that trouble finding a place.
Text 8
W: Hey John. (10)
M: Hey Kerry, nice to hear your voice. (10) So I’m guessing this is to do with Gary’s 30th birthday present
W: You guessed it! Well, we have to agree on the budget(预算) and the item!
M: I got a great idea. I played football with Gary last week. His shoes broke! He had to go home early!
W: Perfect, so I can go to the sports store after work and pick up some shoes. What size, color, and style should I choose
M: White ERKE, size 8.
W: How do you know that Are you sure
M: Trust me, it’s what he was wearing before and I’m certain about the size as I’ve borrowed his shoes before. (11)
W: OK, cool, so how much are they (12)
M: 45 pounds. (12) I’ll put 25 pounds in, because you are going to the shop to get it!
W: Deal!
Text 9 (第13题为推断题)
W: John, do you have four fives for a twenty (14)
M: I have a ten and two fives. Will that be OK
W: Yes, that’s fine. I need to pay to park my car. It’s 5 for the whole day but the ticket machine doesn’t give change, so I don’t want to put a 20 note in it. (14)
M: No, I don’t blame you. I wonder how many people lose money because they don’t have exactly the right amount. (15)
W: Quite a few, I bet. When I was taking an exam in the city center last year, I didn’t have change for a machine. I had to drive about half a mile out of the center to find somewhere I could park for free. Then I had to walk all the way back in the rain.
M: You won’t want that to happen today, when you have such an important interview. (16)
W: Definitely not.
M: OK, here’s your change. Good luck, by the way. I’m sure you’ll get the job.
W: Thank you. Let’s hope so.
Text 10
Well today class, (17) we are combining history and geography to learn a bit about Indonesia and in particular, the world famous Island of Bali, known as the Island of the Gods. Indonesia is a group of Islands in South East Asia, the largest group of Islands in the world in fact. The official language is called Bahasa Indonesia. (18) What makes Bali special is that it’s officially a Hindu island, local dialects include Balinese. For this reason it is much more relaxing than other strict islands in Indonesia. (19) Bali can often be mistaken for its own country, because it has many local laws and rules different from the rest of Indonesia. Many Indonesians travel to Bali for a holiday.
Many of the different islands such as Java, Borneo and Sumatra have their own dialect. (20) Bali has world famous surf breaks and many competitions are held here. It is only a 3-hour flight from Western Australia. So the island has been a wonderful place for holiday.
