As a college student in Boston, I formed the habit of buying used books. I enjoy the hunt, the good price and the unrecognized treasures.I find old textbooks, ex-bestsellers, and books on subjects I've never heard of but now I must learn all about. I don't search for rare books, first editions,or leather-bound editions but books that are worth reading.
Rereading, for me,is a pleasure during retirement. The theater and the concert hall become less appealing to me, along with crowds. Staying alone and reading books have become extremely important to me. Literature needs the flesh of experience to have its full effect. Different books offer me insights and ways of expressing that stuck in my mind as grains of sand in an oyster — now shine like pearls. My taste in books improves with age.
While packing for a move, which occurs at intervals of five to seven years, I clear my shelves and pick my books. I abandon a few, later regret my decisions, and look for them again. Several years ago, I got rid of books related to my job— architecture. Some were design guides, reference books, product catalogs, and things that went out of date. Some were historical or centered on a period or an architect. These had given me many hours of pleasure. Will I ever open their covers again Certainly. I held on to the red bulk of Sir Banister Fletcher's A History of Architecture and books on Paris, Rome, and Boston.
I gave away drafting equipment and instruments. I threw out rolls and rolls of paper, and old drawings of projects completed long ago, some of which had even been damaged. This time, I stay put in a cottage that suits my status and I've moved on in spirit. No doubt I will acquire more used books and throw away more books as passions grow and fade, like feathers changing with the seasons.
24. What does the author consider most important when choosing used books
A. Their appealing covers. B. Their reasonable prices.
C. Their collection value. D. Their excellent content.
25. What does the author realize as he grows older
A. He has a deeper understanding of reading.
B. His attitude towards work changes.
C. His communication skills improve. D. He has a small circle of friends.
26.Why does the author mention books on architecture
A. To show some books are worth rereading. B. To explain his love for architecture.
C. To suggest we avoid making poor decisions.
D. To recommend Sir Banister Fletcher's books.
27. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph
A. He decides to stop throwing away used books.
B. He will read more books that suit his interests.
C. He will enlarge his collection of used books.
D. He is bad at using advanced drafting equipment.

Cigarettes aren't just harmful when they're being smoked. Even when cigarette ends go out and are cold, new research has found they continue to give off harmful chemicals in the air. In the first 24 hours alone, scientists say a used cigarette end will produce 14 percent of the nicotine(尼古丁) that an actively burning cigarette would produce.
While most of these chemicals are released within a day of cigarette ends being put out, an analysis from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine falls by just 50% five days later.
"I was absolutely surprised," said environmental engineer Dustin Poppendieck from the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). "The numbers are significant and could have important impacts when cigarette ends are dealt with indoors or in cars. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first- hand, second-hand and now third-hand smoking,it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter."
To measure emissions from this forgotten thing, Poppendieck and his team placed 2,100 cigarettes that were recently put out inside a special room. Once the ends were sealed away, the team measured eight chemicals commonly produced by cigarettes, four of which the FDA have their eye on for being harmful or potentially so.
After setting the room's temperature, the researchers tested how emissions changed under certain conditions. When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates. This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays (烟灰缸) out for days at a time, especially in the heat.
28. What do the researchers say about cigarette ends
A.They contain little nicotine. B.They give off nicotine for days.
C. They produce no nicotine five days later.
D.They create as much nicotine as burning cigarettes.
29. What do Poppendieck's words suggest
A. First-hand smoking does most harm. B.The findings are within his expectation.
C. Cigarettes should be dealt with indoors. D. Health influence of cigarette ends is ignored.
30. Which word best describes the author's attitude to not cleaning ashtrays for days
A. Disapproving. B. Unconcerned. C. Unclear. D. Puzzled.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Research Found Reasons For Cigarette Ends' Harm
B. Cigarettes Are More Harmful While Being Smoked
C. Used Cigarette Ends Release Harmful Chemicals
D. Cigarette Ends Produce More Chemicals in the Heat

Culture is the invisible bond which ties people together. The art, literature, language, and religion of a community represent its culture. The importance of culture lies in its close association with the ways of thinking and living. Differences in cultures have led to a diversity in the people from different parts of the world.
How we perceive things is largely affected by our judgment skills, preconceived notions, attitude, and emotions. These factors are closely linked with our culture. In perceiving something as good or bad, our biases play a role and so does our way of thinking. People who belong to cultures that promote individualism tend to look at only the main aspects of a situation, while those of a culture that promotes collectivism tend to consider even the minor details. People of Eastern cultures perceive success as being a collective effort, while those of the American culture perceive it as the fruit of individual effort.
Culture affects perception, and perceptions drive behavior. Thus, the culture we belong to has a direct impact on our behavior. Moreover, our environment, which has cultural influences, shapes our behavior. In a society where boys are discouraged from crying, men think of it as an odd gesture.
Group culture determines the behavioral norms for a group. To be accepted as a part of the group, we tend to follow what the group decides for us. Influenced by the norms or rules laid out by our culture,we act in accordance with them. Our culture defines people's expectations from us. In the attempt to fulfill them, we shape our behavior and personality to suit our culture. Our religion, traditions, customs, all a part of our culture, play a major role in shaping our personalities. In a culture where children are taught to be independent early in life, they grow up to be individualistic. In a culture where boys and girls are not treated as equal, children may become aggressive and look at the opposite gender as their enemy, or those treated as inferior may grow up to be submissive.
What do people tend to do if they belong to a culture that promotes collectivism
A. Ignore all unimportant aspects. B.Think about as many details as possible.
C. View success as a result of individual effort.
D. Blame their own failure on others.
33. What does the underlined word“odd” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Harmless. B. Acceptable. C. Strange. D.Interesting.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.The ways of educating children. B.The diversity of personalities.
C.The behavioral norms of a certain group.
D.The influence of culture on personalities.
35. How is the passage mainly developed
A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In 2003, I graduated from high school and I had some difficulty choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree.
I wasn't interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn't decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a one-month work placement in an international company followed by another in a hospital. And then I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted by a foreign bank in Karachi.I got an understanding of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings. The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And there were night calls! This was crazy! I was working all day, through the night, and the next day was the same.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability(不可预测性), but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night. In front of me was a public bus, with college students siting on the top. As the driver weaved through(穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus.________________________________________

应用文写作
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, it’s my honor to be here to talk about short-sightedness.
As we all know, an increasing number of students are short-sighted, which has become a nationwide concern. There are many factors contributing to your short-sightedness, like reading in a poor-lighted environment, spending too much time on your screen. Then, how to protect your eyes First, I suggest you should have an eye test every year. If you are already short-sighted, wearing glasses is the safest way to protect your eyes from further injuries. Besides, you’d better eat more eggs, carrots and dark-green leafy vegetables , which are good for our eyes. What’s more, get enough sleep to ensure your eyes can get a good rest. Don’t focus on your computer screen for a long time. Take frequent breaks to give your eyes a rest.
I hope that all of you can swing into action to protect your eyes. Love your eyes, love yourself!

【参考范文】
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He was lying in the middle of the road, groaning in pain. It was obvious that he was badly injured. However, the bus drove away quickly without noticing it. With the knowledge of first aid I got from the hospital experience, I knew that if the boy was bleeding for some time, he could die. I stopped my car immediately. I lifted his unconscious body into my car with the help of some passers-by and then raced back to the hospital. After the boy was out of danger, I drove home.
The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up,with grateful smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands tightly and said in a trembling voice. "Thank you so much!" she repeated over and over again. From her watery eyes, I felt her sincere gratitude and got a better understanding of the happiness of helping others. After comforting her, I went over to the boy. He gave me a bright smile, which was like a shining star .I spent the rest of the day in a state of excitement ,the extremely good mood I had ever experienced. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

W: So, we have to make a map of our local area for our next geography lesson.
M: Where do we start Our teacher told us to look at that online map-making tool, but she didn't give too many details about it. Using it might be easier said than done, judging by how complex it looks.
W: We need to become really familiar with the local area before we start doing anything, I'd say.

M: Monica, welcome to the program. Your book Make Your Garden Unique has been a great success. So, how did your interest in gardening start Were your parents keen gardeners
W: Actually, seeing me spending hours in the garden was a cause for concern rather than pride for them.
M:And how did you go from gardener to writer W: Well, I did win a short-story prize at college. After I graduated, I was making a good living by looking after gardens. When I saw an advert for a gardening journalist, I applied and I did it in my spare time. That's when I started writing my book.
M: What makes your gardening book so special for readers
W: I include some interviews, the kind of personal experience that may amuse the readers. Of course, all the information on gardening is correct, and well researched.
M: Finally, we've heard you've been asked to take part in a TV program.
W: I have, and I'm still thinking about it. Such a program can make you into a kind of celebrity, and I’ m not sure if I’ m ready for that, you know, you start being recognized in the street. But my publisher encourages me to have a go!
