We sometimes say the lion is “the king of the jungle” because it is stronger and more dangerous than the other animals. Most other animals in the jungle run more slowly than the lion, so it can hunt better. The lion is the top animal in the land food chain.
In the sea, the shark is at the top of the food chain. Most other sea animals swim much more slowly than it. It can also use its big teeth to catch other sea animals and eat them.
What is at the top of the world’s food chain Humans are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the cleverest! We could not catch up with most animals, so we invented cars and now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than a lion, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.
People’s inventions help a lot, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago in Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild wolves.
The wild wolves usually eat wild rabbits. But in recent years, the number of wild rabbits is becoming bigger and bigger because the number of wild wolves is getting smaller and smaller.
The wild rabbits competed for the grass with the sheep and cows. Much of the grassland became desert because the rabbits destroyed (毁坏) it seriously.
Remember that we are a part of the food chain, we are in danger, too! If we protect animals, we are protecting ourselves. Luckily, people have paid much attention to such problems. We will do more things to keep the balance of ecosystem in the future.
The food chain of land animals: The lion can run 1 most other animals. The word’s food chain: People’s inventions are 2 but dangerous.
The food chain of sea animals: 3 stands at the top of the sea food chain. Food Chain The balance of the food chain: While the number of wild wolves is getting smaller, the number of wild rabbits is 4 .
What to do: More things will be done to 5 of the ecosystem in the future.

Everyone needs a place to relax, right
Now young students can easily experience as much stress as adults (成年人) do. They face competition, interpersonal relationships and personal problems as adults do. But adults have more social experience and can deal with problems with more self-control. For students, sometimes they have no choice but to rebel (叛逆).
Faced with such a situation, a middle school in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, recently opened its “mood drain room (情绪发泄室)”, a place for students to lift their spirits.
The room provides students with classes to guide their mental (心理的) health development. It’s also a place for practice where students can express themselves by doing different kinds of activities such as boxing (拳击) or shouting. There are also mental health teachers in the room who help students with questions and also watch their activities for safety reasons.
Designers have considered different personalities of students when designing these activities. No matter it’s a boy or a girl who shows up, they can put on a pair of boxing gloves to hit a sandbag or shout out loud to relax. A drawing wall and a “writer’s and reader’s corner” are for shy students.
“I wish my school had such a room. But I would feel a little bit shy going there to shout out loud by myself. I like the room to have different theme activities every week so that I feel more comfortable going there,” said Xingyuan, a Chinese middle school student.
“What matters is that it should be used in a right way, unlike the place where my son goes to cut classes and box against his classmates. It needs to have professional teachers,” said Li, a parent of a middle school student.

China has been known as “a well-dressed country” since ancient times. Traditional costume has explained Chinese culture. The shapes, patterns and colors of traditional clothes reflect the history, culture and values of the county.
Hanfu, also known as Huafu, refers to the traditional clothing of the Han nationality in China. From the time of the Yellow Emperor to the end of the Ming dynasty, Hanfu has deeply influenced the Chinese fashion world for thousands of years.
A complete set of clothing of Hanfu was formed during the Han dynasty based on the Four Books and Fire Classics. Circle-cut long sleeves represent “heaven”, showing a sense of beauty. And cross collars represent “earth”, which led people to follow rules. The belt going straight towards the ground stands for honesty. Patterns are also important to Hanfu. Usually, objects like the sun, the moon, elephants, tigers or dragons mean that the wearer belongs to the upper class.

When were restaurants invented Do you know about that Actually, the first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. People didn’t order food from a menu. Everyone used to share the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn’t have to store food at home if they ate at these restaurants.
Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. All of these people had to eat. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the Imperial Way, a very big street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn’t have to eat the same food as everyone else.
For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food on the street or at inns-small hotels. Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to restaurants we know today. There was a bigger variety of food, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, trains made travel much faster and simpler. In the end, this kind of restaurants began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.
Now restaurants are here and there. You can buy a variety of different kinds of food. You can ask someone to send food to your door. But remember it wasn’t always like that.

For middle and primary school students, being able to cook will become a must. A new curriculum standard (课程标准) for labor (劳动) education recently came out. Starting from 2022 fall term, students are required to take courses on labor skills. The standard includes different labor tasks. The first is daily housework, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and repairing home appliances. A Superfast Writing Robot
The US company OpenAI has made a powerful writing robot that is called ChatGPT.
The company developed ChatGPT to write novels, songs, poems and even jokes. For example, if you type(打字)in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of a cat, Max, who struggled (奋斗) its way past many difficulties to travel among the stars. Besides, it can also translate languages and communicate with people. You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, and asking for birthday party ideas. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to take the place of humans yet, but it can be very creative.
So far, people around the world have tried ChatGPT and posted their results on social media. The power of it lies in its speed and understanding of difficult problems. People may spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article in a special field. But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one just in seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark and harmful questions, it will not give you answers to them.
However, ChatGPT also leads to many problems. The copyright(版权)is the most serious one. Also, since the robot is trained to mainly use words from the Internet, it sometimes picks up words which are not suitable. These are the problems that people need to solve in the future.

Nowadays, wherever we go, we can’t leave our mobile phones behind. When we eat out, once a dish comes, we’d take out our phones and click, rather than lift our chopsticks first. Later, we post the photos onto Weibo or WeChat, waiting to be “liked”. Then we check our phones from time to time during the meal.
A recent study suggests that what we are used to doing is not that good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. To test this, some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food. It turned out that the more photos they took, the less delicious the food seemed to them.
There are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. After posting the photos onto the Internet, one is unable to control himself and check his phone many times, which makes others uncomfortable. It seems that your phone calls your name secretly all the time, even when you are with real people.

The People’s Bank of China has issued (发行) the fifth edition (版本) of the renminbi (RMB). These paper money has brighter colors and new safety ability.
We’ve been using paper money for around 1,000 years. Back in the Northern Song Dynasty, Chinese people made the world’s earliest paper money to take the place of the metal coins. They were called jiaozi.
Paper money was cheaper to make and easier to carry. These advantages made it more popular than other forms of money. But now, in the digitals (数码的) age, paper money seems to be disappearing for the same reason.
Now, from supermarkets to street stores, people pay by using the Wechat Wallet and Alipay apps on their mobile phones. Sweden is even closer to a future without paper money. Many Swedish banks no longer even have cash (现金) on hand.
But there are worries about creating cashless societies. Some say it is unfair to the poor and people without much education. It’s not easy for them to open bank accounts (账户) or deal with mobile phones. And if all of your money is “digital”, it may not be safe enough.
Is paper money going away Although paper money is used less than electronic payment in some countries, it won’t disappear at once in most parts of the world.

Environmental protection is one of the hottest topics nowadays. It was also something that ancient Chinese paid great attention to. In fact, the world’s earliest environmental protection idea, ministry(部门)and law were all born in China. How did the ancient Chinese protect the environment
The world’s earliest idea of “managing state affairs(政事)through environmental protection”
Xunzi, a famous thinker in the Warring States Period, came up with the idea of “managing state affairs through environmental protection”. He wrote in his book that vegetation(植被)should be protected well by humans.
Guan Zhong, a government officer 400 years ahead of Xunzi, was also an environmental protection expert. He said “a king who cannot protect his vegetation is not doing a good job”.
The world’s earliest “environmental protection ministry”
Nine ministries set up by Shun, an ancient Chinese emperor, included “Yu”(虞), an environmental protection ministry. The first “Yu” leader was Boyi, an environmental protection expert. He invented wells so people could drink clean water. He knew a lot about animals and also called for animal protection.
The world’s earliest “environmental protection law”
Over 4,000 years ago, Dayu, an ancient Chinese water-control expert and also an emperor, made a rule, not allowing people to cut down trees in March or catch fish in June, because it was the time when they grew quickly.
Almost 3,000 years ago, Tianlü, the first environmental protection law, appeared in Qin. It recorded many ancient environmental protection rules. Two of them were interesting: firstly, rivers should not be blocked (堵塞); secondly, grass and trees should not be burned to be fertilizer(肥料) except for summer. The second one is inspiring even for today. It can help to keep air clean and fresh.

When you visit a foreign country, it is important to know how to ask for help politely. For example, you may ask “Where are the restrooms ” or “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are ” These are similar requests for directions. Both are correct, but the first one sounds less polite. That is because it is a very direct question. It is not enough to just ask a question correctly. We also need to learn how to be polite when we ask for help.
Good speakers change the way they speak in different situations. The expressions they use might depend on whom they are speaking to or how well they know each other. It is all right to ask your classmates direct questions because you know them well. However, if you say to your teacher, “When is the school trip ” this might sound impolite. But if you say, “Excuse me, Mr.West. Do you know when the school trip is ”, this will sound much more polite.
Usually polite questions are longer. They include expressions such as “Could you please... ” or “May I ask... ” It sounds more polite to say, “Peter, could you please tell me your address ” than “Peter, tell me your e-mail address.” Sometimes we even need to spend time leading into a request. For example, we might first say to a stranger, “Excuse me, I wonder if you can help me” or “I’m sorry to trouble you, but...” before asking for help.
It might seem more difficult to speak politely than directly. However, it is important to learn how to use the right language in different situations. This will help you communicate better with other people.

Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is a form of traditional Chinese folk drama. It is probably one of the most ancient arts using light and shadow. It is also a mix of many art forms, including painting, music, opera and story-telling. Shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.
More than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han was very sad about the death of his wife. One day, one of his men happened to see some children playing with toys. The shadows of the toys were lively on the floor. Then he had an idea— he made a puppet (偶) of the emperor’s wife. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a puppet show. This is believed to be the start of shadow puppetry.
In the Tang Dynasty, shadow puppetry was played by many people in many places around the country. Then in the Yuan Dynasty, it was introduced into West Asian and European countries along the Silk Road. The art form became the most popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, it was played in almost every province and in many kinds of celebrations like weddings and birthday dinners.
It is not an easy job to make the puppets. Their body parts are cut separately and then joined together so that they an move freely. During the show, puppetry artists connect the puppets’ most important joints (关节) with sticks. In this way, they can hold the puppets and make the puppets walk, run or dance as they want. Sometimes the puppets could be as lively as living things on the screen.
In fact, most puppetry artists across China don’t get trained and don’t play shadow puppetry as a job. They just play it for fun and love. However, they are still experts (专家)in this field. In recent years, puppetry artists have explored ways to make this ancient art form as popular as it used to be and pass it on to the young, hoping more people can understand its importance and feel its beauty. They also get support from the Chinese government. Thanks to their hard work, Chinese shadow puppetry is becoming great again.

People use colour expressions to show their feelings and describe the world. Many colour-related phrases are common in our speech. Let’s see where they came from.
The Blues
The phrase is a short form of “the blue devils”, which also stands for sad feelings. This expression is also used to describe a type of jazz music that became popular in the south of America in the 1940s.
Black Sheep of the Family
The phrase refers to a member of a family or a group who is unacceptable. In the old days, the black sheep were sold at a lower price than the white ones at the market, because their fleece(羊毛) could not be coloured. This made the black sheep an unwelcome member of the group.
A Red-letter Day
A Red-letter Day is a day when something really exciting and memorable(难忘的) happens. It came from the practice of marking special western days, holidays, or other festivals in red on the calendar. Today, some calendars still use red numbers for special holidays, even weekends.
Green with Envy
Writers such as Shakespeare in the 16th century used the colour green to stand for envy, but it was the Greeks who connected it with sickness caused by envy. When a person was full of envy, his or her body produced too much bile(胆汁), giving his or her skin a greenish colour. That is green with envy.

Disney was born to a poor family in the US in 1901. He liked drawing animals on the farm when he was a kid. A neighbor often bought his pictures. This encouraged him to be an artist when he grew up.
At the age of nine, he got his first job of delivering (投递) papers. He had to get up at 3:30 every morning and he began to work half an hour later. He worked till 6:00 in the morning. Then he hurried home for breakfast and went to school.
When Disney was older, he tried to get a full-time job, but it was hard. When he was 19, he started an art company (公司) with a friend. But soon it closed. Later he set up another company, but that one failed, too. Disney didn’t lose heart. He believed in himself.
Three years later, he and his brother set up a cartoon company in Hollywood. It turned out to be a great success. “When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, then you’ll make it,” he said.

根据短文内容完成短文后的思维导图。

Mickey Mouse and Snow White are popular with children. But do you know how their creator, Walt Disney, brought them to life
Disney was born to a poor family in the US in 1901.
